A2IM's LA Licensing Day -‐ O ctober 26, 2011 -‐ Presented by TuneSat Future of the Soundtrack Panel -‐ Is the soundtrack dying especially with the advent of streaming music services paying p eople based on ISRC rather than UPC codes? Some labels and studios a re doing disc on demand rather than manufacturing, distributing, and p romoting soundtracks. What is n ext for the soundtrack? MODERATOR: Amos Biegun, Counterpoint Systems Amos Biegun, CEO of Counterpoint Systems, has spearheaded the company’s accelerated growth since joining in 1996. Under his leadership, Amos has expanded Counterpoint’s reach across the music, media, and brand licensing industries. Amos’ music industry experience started in 1990 in h is role of Operations Manager at Carlin Music, one of the largest independent music publishers in t he Europe. During his term at Carlin Music, he reduced staffing levels, increased profitably, and completely overhauled the company’s back-‐office administration; including implementing a n ew music publishing system developed by Counterpoint. Amos’s exposure to the software and to its founder, Bob Katovsky, made his transition to a leadership role at Counterpoint a natural fit. As CEO of Counterpoint Systems, Amos has defined the company’s strategy for growth, including the a cquisitions of Freshground Software and TL Creates, and setting up Counterpoint’s US subsidiary and its Los Angeles, California offices. Under his guidance, the company has continued to grow steadily a nd has become the leader in providing rights and royalty solutions a round the globe. PANELISTS David Hirshland, President of Bug Music, oversees the operations of the independent publishing administration company’s five worldwide offices. David was previously employed at the law firm of Rosenfeld, Meyer and Susman where h e represented both talent and institutional clients in the film and music industries. Prior to his legal career, David was an agent at the Rosebud Agency and later formed his o wn management company. Having b een at Bug for 15 years, David started as V.P. of Business & Legal Affairs, then Executive V.P. before being named President in 2006. In addition to h is management of the company h e a lso functions in an A&R capacity, a llowing the company to increase the size of its ever-‐expanding roster of writers and catalogs. A mong them are the estates of Johnny Cash, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Woody Guthrie and Stevie Ray Vaughan, legendary artists such as Iggy Pop, the Guess Who and Los Lobos and contemporary alt rock stars such as Ryan Adams, Kings of Leon and Wilco. David received a B.A. in English Literature from Brown University and a J.D. f rom UCLA. Brian McNelis, Senior Vice President O f Music And Soundtracks for Lakeshore Entertainment, the four time A cademy A ward winning film production company. Brian is a Grammy Award Nominated Soundtrack Album Producer, is the Co-‐Producer of the Lakeshore/MGM feature film Fame, and has provided Executive Music Services to CBS Films f irst slate of releases including the Harrison Ford d rama "Extraordinary Measures" and the Jennifer Lopez comedy "The Back-‐Up Plan". Some of the soundtrack and score albums Brian has produced include Napoleon Dynamite, Fame, The Last Kiss and Underworld Evolution. H e has Executive Produced t he a lbums f rom such A cademy A ward Nominated and Winning films a s "Little Miss Sunshine," "City Of God", "Into The Wild" and most recently "The Hurt Locker" for which the score by Marco Beltrami and Buck Sanders was also nominated for an A cademy A ward. Steven Vincent, Vice President, Music and Soundtracks, Disney Channel was promoted to this role in November 2007. He is responsible for supervising the music used in original programming for kids and t weens seen on Disney Channel and Disney XD. His job duties also extend to programming on ABC Family, which like Disney Channel and Disney XD, is part of Disney-‐ABC Television Group. Mr. Vincent advises and collaborates with TV series and TV movie producers on licensed music. He works with recording a rtists, lyricists and composers in conjunction with Disney Publishing, Walt Disney Records, Hollywood Records and Radio Disney. His most recent hits include Walt Disney Records soundtracks to "High School Musical 3: Senior Year," "Lemonade Mouth" and "Camp Rock." Other successful movie soundtracks he shepherded include the "High School Musical" "Jump In!," ""The Cheetah Girls," and "Hannah Montana" series. Russell Ziecker, Head of Television Music and Artist & Repertoire for Lionsgate Music + Publishing, has had multiple careers within one vocation…starting out as a bass player in a number of touring and recording bands, moving into his music business career as a music publisher at both Chrysalis Music Group and Virgin Music Publishing. Ziecker currently h eads up t elevision music at Lionsgate Music & Publishing, in-‐house music-‐supervision, and new music-‐related initiatives and a cquisitions for the company; overseeing music for Emmy and Golden Globe a ward-‐winning MAD MEN, WEEDS, NURSE JACKIE, BLUE MOUNTAIN STATE, the Starz o riginal series BOSS directed by Gus Van Sant and starring Kelsey Grammar, and the upcoming A NGER MANAGEMENT series with Charlie Sheen. Ziecker is d eveloping additional business initiatives for the company, such as Fear Net Sounds, having just issued the previously unreleased Friday the 13th soundtrack set. The company plans upcoming releases that utilize d istribution partners AT&T (QR Code systems), Shazam, Spotify, etc. and have d eveloped a Soundtrack-‐by-‐Choice (build-‐your-‐own) soundtrack concept as well.
