Legendary actress Manorama passes away
Legendary actress, comedian and singer Manorama, affectionately referred to as
‘Aachi’, passed away on Oct.
10 at her residence in Neelakanta Metha Street (T. Nagar).
She was 78, and had been a
resident of T. Nagar for more
than six decades.
She is survived by her son
Boopathy. Film personalities,
including her co-star in a number of movies J. Jayalalitha
(Tamilnadu Chief Minister),
political bigwigs and persons
from all walks of life paid hom-
age to the mortal remains of
the deceased actor.
In a career spanning over 60
years, she had acted with leading actors including MGR,
Sivaji Ganesan, NTR, Kamal
Haasan, Rajinikanth, Nagesh,
‘Cho’ Ramaswamy, ‘Thengai’
Srinivasan as well as presentday actors. Her performances
matched and sometimes even
bettered that of the lead actors
of her movies. Her first film
was Malayitta Mangai produced by lyricist Kannadasan
in 1958.
She was also a versatile
singer and had worked with leading music directors.
She was fondly called ‘Aachi’
after portraying the role of a
Chettiar girl in the radio serial
‘Kaappu Katti Chatram’ in the
1960s. The serial was a big hit,
and the Aachi title stuck.
She had acted in over 1,500
films, 1000 stage shows and
sang hundreds of songs.
Her name was included in
the Guinness Book of Records
for acting in the maximum
number of films. She was a
past vice-president of South
India Cine Artists Association.
The veteran actor has
rubbed shoulders with leading
comedians spanning the 60
years including NSK, T.R.
Ramachandran, Chandrababu, Thangavelu, Nagesh,
Cho, Goundamani, Suruli
Rajan, Vadivelu and Vivekh.
Five film personalities
Annadurai, MGR, N.T. Rama
Rao, J. Jayalalithaa and M.
Karunanidhi with whom she
worked became chief ministers. The T. Nagar residence of
Manorama, located close to
Sivaji Ganesan’s home, was
full of tearful friends and fans
from early in the morning. Film
stars who came to pay floral
tributes included Rajinikanth,
Sarathkumar, ‘Delhi’ Ganesh,
Karthik, Illayaraja, Vairamuthu, S Ve Sekar, Ajith,
Vijay, Vishal, Karthi, Vijaykumar, Bhagyaraj, Koundamani Parthiban, Raadhika,
‘Kalaipuli’ Thanu, T. Rajender,
Simbu, Vimal, Vikraman, and
Pandiarajan.

NO HOLDS BARRED
By M.A. SADANAND
“MY LORD, ME LUD”
A hundred and sixty years after the country was reborn as
an independent entity, the surge of democratic blood through
the republican blood vessels has electrified the Indian
approach to the ancient caveman’s ‘life for life’ approach to
the measure of justice to the guy in the dock accused of
murder.
Half wits and nitwits, as lawyer and client respectively,
booted the manila rope industry as the said rope was the sure
fire execution rope before the U.S devised the electric chair,
which would have been, if India had copied the ritual, the most
ghoulish send off of a nitwit.
Anyway, Indian judges are less meaty and more brainy,
resulting in exporting back the original Hyde, the manila
product as the justice giver which, in India, is the judicial brain
and mind.
Retired Chief Justice of India, P. Sathasivam, now Governor
of Kerala, had in his reign for over two years as Chief of Justice
of the Supreme Court, not sent any killer to swing. That
example is good enough and no lessons need be learnt from
other judicial brains. A good heart leads all other paraphernalia
in life, especially in the contentious arena of the Court of Law.
Law is the vehicle that transports one from the turf for a
combined exercise of heart, mind and justice that led the
contingent to the display area. The only policeman and
prosecutor are but the hands of justice.
By the time the orders are to be pronounced, even the
greatest and the most quizzical assessor of the evidence
should have only a doubtless conviction that the poor mutt
had committed the crime beyond the shadow of reasonable
doubt, when he was not drunk and that he must recompense
the country by working in the jail for a minimum fifty year
stretch. If he dies in jail, it saves the country his keep. Nobody
has a right to kill and all the laws that provide annihilation as
a punishment, are stupid. If killing is bad, killing the killer is
very bad. What, My Lord, Me Lud, ME LUD!!
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Demand for alternate location by evicted roadside
vendors unwarranted
Sir, This refers to the news item ‘Siva Vishnu Temple Vendor
Association erects banner against eviction outside temple
entrance’ published last week in Mambalam Times. The demand
by the Association is unwarranted as they are occupying public
place for carrying on their commercial business. They do not
have titles to the public places they are occupying, so demanding
an alternate location for carrying on business from the
Corporation is unlawful. Notwithstanding their right to hawk/
vend or anything contained in the Street Vendors’ Act, they
have no right to occupy the pavement/public places, impeding
the very right of the public to use the same. The Corporation
is to be blamed for the situation. This situation would not have
arisen had it nipped the encroachments in the bud. Corporation
had incurred Rs. 3 crores in building a complex in Pondy Bazaar
to relocate some of the displaced vendors/hawkers from Usman
Road and Pondy Bazaar. But most of these relocated vendors
have rented out the space provided to them in the complex and
are doing business again at the place from where they were
displaced. The vendors/hawkers seem to think that they can
occupy any place and ask the Corporation later to provide
another accommodation if they are evicted. This misconception
must be removed once and for all by cracking the whip. Otherwise,
the encroachments will proliferate.— V.S. Jayaraman, 31,
Motilal Street, T. Nagar
Draft ‘Fire and Safety’ guidelines for buildings
by end of November
Sir, With respect to the public interest litigation filed by our
Association, which sought directions from the authorities to
ensure strict compliance of fire and safety regulations by
commercial complexes on Usman Road/Ranganathan Street
in T. Nagar, the hon’ble Madras Court has been examining counter-affidavits filed by various government bodies
including CMDA, Chennai Corporation, Department of Fire
and Rescue Services and also the respondent-commercial
establishments numbering eleven in all for the past several
months. A committee formed earlier under Justice S.
Rajeswaran had recommended several amendments to Section
113C of the Tamilnadu Town and Country Planning Act which
deals with fire and safety’.
During the Court hearing on Oct. 13, the Tamilnadu Govt.
submitted that Justice S. Rajeswaran’s recommendations
were ready and sought 10 weeks to frame the formal rules
based on these recommendations. The judges said that 10
weeks was too long and directed the government to upload
Justice Rajeswaran’s recommendations on its website, invite
comments, and submit draft guidelines to the court by the end
of November. The next hearing has been scheduled on Dec.

Man robs motorcyclist at gunpoint, nabbed by cops in hours
A 50-year-old man robbed a
motorbike rider at gunpoint on
Jawaharlal Nehru Road in
Ashok Nagar on the night of
Oct. 14 but was nabbed within
a few hours, police said.
They seized a licensed gun
and six bullets from the
arrested man, Panneerselvam
of Pudukottai. A magistrate
remanded him to judicial
custody. Around 11 p.m,
Paneersel-vam on his bike
deliberately hit another bike,
snatched the man’s twosovereign gold chain at
gunpoint and sped away. The
victim, Kalaiselvam, noted
down the license number and
gave it to the police along with
the description of the culprit. A
few hours later, police arrested
Paneerselvam near Vadapalani.
Police said Paneers-elvam,
from Alangudi in Pudukottai,
had earlier cheated several
businessmen after promising
them loans.
He would approach a
businessman and say he could
secure a huge loan at low
interest.
While striking the deal, he
would wave a gun in the victim’s
face and scoot with a large part
of the loan. After helping
Coimbatore resident Sundarajan secure a Rs. 50 crore loan,
he asked him to come to
Chennai and took Rs. 50,000
from him at gunpoint at a
Ramapuram lodge. “We are
verifying the complaint of
Sundarajan.
Though
Paneerselvam had a licensed
gun, he used it for robbery,” an
investigating officer said. Police
are likely to cancel the license
if it is found to be genuine.
