Goodyear Ski Club Newsletter
President’s Report
Hello, Goodyear Ski Club members! August is going to be a busy
month for the Club. We have our summer picnic scheduled for the
10th, a RubberDucks game for the 8th, and the Nautica Queen cruise
for the 23rd. Please do your best to come and spend some time with
the Club. If you’re coming to the picnic, try and bring a side dish or
dessert to share. As always, we will provide the beverages, hot
dogs, hamburgers and sausages.
After careful consideration, the board has set the week trips for the
upcoming 2014-15 season. Last month we listed Breckenridge, and
this month it is Mount Bachelor, Oregon. We like to think this is a
good mix. In Breckenridge, we have an old familiar friend. And for
those who are not aware, this past season Breckenridge opened a
new peak. From what I’ve been told, the Breckenridge “experience”
has only gotten better with this additional acreage to ski. For those
who go, please take lots of pictures to share with the Club.
Now with Mount Bachelor, we are treading into uncharted territory.
The Club has never been there. For those who are unaware,
Bachelor is in the Cascade Mountain range in Oregon. According to
the weather report, Bachelor averages 462 inches of snow per
season. The mountain itself is an extinct (hopefully) stratovolcano.
The skiable area encompasses the entire 360 degrees of the
mountain, totaling 3700 acres. And for those who try and avoid the
higher altitudes these days, Bachelor tops out a little more than
9000 feet with a vertical drop of slightly more than 3300 feet. Now
for the non-skiing aspects, we will be staying in the town of Bend.
After a little research, it appears that Bend is the craft beer capital
of America. They have more of these types of breweries than
anywhere else, 19 in total. Apparently, there are brewery tours
available, or many lie within walking distance of the Riverhouse
Hotel, where we are staying. Now for the bad part – we realize the
trip is more expensive than we are used to paying. Unfortunately,
the March trips this year were all up substantially from last year. I
suppose that is a trend that will not be likely to reverse anytime
soon. Some trips we were looking at were going to be in the very
upper teens, close to $2000 per person. That is just TOO
expensive. We certainly hope that Club members will find the trips
we selected appealing and that you can join us on at least one.

Also in the trip planning phase, the Stark County Ski Club is trying to gauge interest in a December trip to
Stowe, Vermont. We could split this trip with them to help defray the risk. There is a trip proposal in this
newsletter; if interested, please let me know. And now that we have set our week trips, we will look at the
timing for a couple of day trips as well. The board will let everyone know as soon as that is done.
Looking ahead, I’ve been in contact with Jim Armington at Buckeye Sports Center concerning this year’s
Swap Shop. The dates have been set for October 2-5. So if you’ve got anything you want to sell, the time
is coming to pull it out of storage. As always, we can use the help if anyone wishes to volunteer during the
Swap Shop. Last year, we not only had great sales, but we were able to persuade a number of visitors to
join the Club. This year, we are planning on advertising the benefits of the Club even more, and hopefully,
we will get more new members.
One last thing, with our picnic being on August 10 this year, we have decided to take a few minutes to
have our monthly meeting then. As always, enjoy the summer, and be safe.

Vice President’s Report – Teresa Gifford
Hello, everyone! Hope you are all having a wonderful summer. There certainly has been a whirlwind of
very extreme high and low temperatures this summer, not your ordinary type of weather, for sure.
We are coming close to the GSC Summer Picnic at Wingfoot Lake State Park. The officers have decided to
change the price for non-members age 18 and over from $10 to $5; so, if you have a friend or relative
who would like to come enjoy the afternoon at the picnic, the cost will be only $5 for ANY non-member. If
you are attending, please remember to bring a side dish or dessert to share. The Club will be providing
the meat, condiments, tableware and drinks as usual. We will have some games to play, and we will have
the 50/50 raffle, along with some other ski-related giveaways. So, mark your calendars for this fun day!
The Akron RubberDucks game set for Friday, August 8 is sold out. “Thank you” to the members who have
purchased tickets for this game. It will, once again, be a fantastic night of local baseball with fireworks to
finish off the night.
The Nautica Queen Dinner Cruise set for Saturday, August 23 will be another great night out sailing the
waters of Cleveland, Ohio, and taking in the sights and scenery. If you are interested in going to this
event, please sign up no later than August 15. The dinner cruise includes an unlimited buffet meal, coffee,
tea or iced tea, and musical entertainment. This is a 3-hour dinner cruise; the boat will be loading the
passengers at 6:30 and will start sailing at 7:30. If you are late (or miss the boat – no pun intended) they
will not wait for anyone. I will have sign-up forms at the welcome table at the summer picnic. The price is
$48.00 per person. Checks or cash will be accepted. Make your check payable to Goodyear Ski Club. If
you are already signed up for the cruise, I will be sending an e-mail to you with directions and parking
information.
Our annual GSC Swap Shop is slowly approaching; we will have sign-up sheets for those who are able to
volunteer their time for this event. The dates are October 2 through October 5. As always, we appreciate
everyone who volunteers to help out for this event.
Thank you again for coming to the off season events that have been planned for the Club. The board has
been working hard on getting the week long ski trips set for 2015; applications for the trips will also be
available at the welcome table at the annual summer picnic. Hope to see you all sometime soon.

The 2014 GSC Golf Scramble was held on Saturday, July 19 at Arrowhead Golf & Banquet Center in
North Canton. It rained pretty hard in the morning and then drizzled on and off all afternoon, but that
turned out to our advantage. It kept the temperature reasonably comfortable, and it kept other golfers
away from the course. Our event organizer, Paul Hanna, seized the opportunity to arrange for a shotgun
start for our eight foursomes. Arrowhead supplied us with ice bags filled with canned beverages. Around
noontime, we loaded our clubs and beer bags into our carts, and embarked for our first nine holes. At the
turn, we stopped back at the lodge to lunch on hotdogs and chips and to replenish our beer supplies.
Due to the shotgun start, most teams finished at about the same time; so, there was only a short wait for
the banquet to begin. While we were waiting, we were treated to more beer, wine, and soft drinks in the
lounge. Dinner was served at tables with white tablecloths, cloth napkins, real plates, real cutlery, and of
course, more free drinks. Rolls and salad were followed by the entrée: strip steak, baked potato, and
green beans. Both the food and the service were very good. After dinner, it was time for the award
presentation. Even if your team didn’t win one of the golf awards, you still got a prize because everyone
was entered in the drawing for door prizes. They were really good prizes, too! On behalf of GSC, I want to
thank our generous prize donors, and I especially wish to thank Paul for organizing such a great, fun day
of golf and camaraderie.

Stowe Train Trip Proposal
December 11-15, 2014
Would you be interested in the following trip? Please let us know what you think; we
value your input. This is not a commitment, just an indication of interest.
Goodyear Ski Club is investigating a trip to Stowe, Vermont, in conjunction with Stark County Ski Club
(formerly Timken Ski Club). The dates are December 11-15, 2014, Thursday-Sunday, returning early
Monday morning. We would be traveling Thursday and Sunday evening, skiing Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
Includes:
 Transportation between Canton/Akron and the Amtrak train station in Cleveland, OH (roundtrip)
 Amtrak train (Lakeshore Limited) between Cleveland, OH and Schenectady, NY (roundtrip)
 Motor coach between Schenectady, NY and Stowe, VT (roundtrip)
 Lodging at the Commodore Hotel in Stowe (2 per room) with breakfast daily
 One group dinner at the Commodore Hotel
 3-Day lift ticket at Stowe (optional day at Jay Peak for $15 more if enough people are interested)
 Train baggage and bus tips are included.
The Commodore Hotel is close to quaint, historic downtown
Stowe. It’s an easy walk to other restaurants, shops, and
places of interest. We will have our bus with us for the
duration; we can explore as we wish. We will have time in
Schenectady, both going and coming home, to have food
and libation. There are several options near the train depot;
there’s no need to rush a meal at Stowe prior to departure.
The price depends on the number of people committed:
 At 30 people, the cost would be $675
 At 40 people, the cost would be $619
Should we pursue this? Please send your “yes” or “no” response to [email protected].
Again, this is not a commitment! It is only an indication of interest. – Chris Gifford

CANCELLATION AND/OR CHANGES: GSC reserves the right to: (1) withdraw the trip; (2) refuse, at any time, to accept or retain any person as a trip

Unforeseen costs from changes to air travel, ground travel, lift tickets or rooming will be passed onto the trip participants.
FUEL SURCHARGES: The GSC may incur additional fuel surcharges to the contracted transportation at any time before trip departure. It is the
responsibility of the participant to pay any such increases. Participants having any questions regarding this policy should contact their trip leader.
ROOMING PREFERENCES: Due to the nature of our trips, the number of participants, the bedding configuration, and the accommodations secured for
the trip participants, the GSC cannot guarantee that the requested rooming preference will be provided.
SINGLE SUPPLEMENT: Room rates are based upon double occupancy. If you are a single participant, without a roommate preference, every effort will
be made to find you a roommate. If that is not possible, you will be required to pay any single supplement charges that may be imposed.
RESPONSIBILITY: GSC is acting as the applicant’s agent and will not be liable for any loss or damage to baggage or property, or any personal injury, or
any other loss occurring or occasioned by applicant’s participation or lack of participation in a trip. GSC will not be responsible for any cost increase(s)
due to increases in local, state, or Federal taxes, fuel surcharges, baggage fees, etc. Any participant under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a
parent or guardian.
REFUNDS: Applicant will receive a full refund if the GSC cancels a trip, except and unless such cancellation is necessitated or caused, either wholly or
in part, by applicant’s cancellation or failure to make timely payment. 1) Where applicant cancels at any time and trip departs 100% filled, the applicant
may be entitled to a refund, less a $5 service charge on any one day trip; a $15 service charge on any weekend trip; or a $25 service charge on any trip
over three days. 2) Where applicant cancels and a trip departs less than 100% filled, the applicant may be liable for the entire cost of the applicant’s trip,

payments made by the applicant to the GSC.
NSF CHECK: For any check returned for insufficient funds, the participant will be assessed a $25 minimum return check fee, plus any daily penalties
incurred by the GSC. The return of any check will be cause for cash payments to be made to the GSC Treasurer. If checks are returned for insufficient
funds, the Treasurer shall notify the participant and allow him/her fourteen (14) days to cover the check. If funds have not been paid within the fourteen
day period, the member may lose his/her position on any GSC trip or activity.
TRIPS OUT OF THE COUNTRY: You must have a current passport, which does not expire until 6 months after your return. If you have been convicted
of a crime, including D.U.I., you may be refused entry into the subject country and should contact the country’s embassy or Consular General for the

ASSOCIATE MEMBER: To protect the GSC’s non-profit status, each non-member is charged an Associate Membership fee based upon a nonrefundable fee structure of: $5 for each one day trip; $10 for each weekend trip; and $25 for any trip longer than three days. This fee allows an individual
to participate on a current season ski trip. Within on month from the ending date of the respective trip, the Associate Membership fee may be applied
toward a full membership. The fee does not entitle the Associate Member to receive the monthly newsletter or any other GSC benefits. The Associate
Membership fee will be in effect only after a trip is opened to non-members.

and acknowledge that I have had an opportunity to make all necessary inquiries regarding the transportation and facilities involved. I release the GSC to
use my likeness which may appear on their website to publicize their ski trips, which may appear in their photo albums or which may appear in other
media used to publicize the GSC and its activities. I am gifting a portion of my trip fee (eligible reimbursement/# of trip participants) to the Trip
Coordinator. I intend this release to be binding on my heirs and personal representatives. If I am the parent or legal guardian of a trip participant, I intend
