President’s Report
Contents
Hello again, fellow skiers. We are in the final few weeks of the 20152016 ski season; I hope that everyone has been able to get out and
enjoy themselves. We just got back from Holimont, our last day trip
of the season. Despite the forecast, we had a nearly PERFECT day.
There was no rain (freezing or otherwise), lift lines were minimal and
conditions were great. We could not have asked for better!

Though the season is winding down, we still have one week trip to
go, our March 5−12 trip to Banff. Bill Nappi is running the trip, and if
you are going and have any questions, do not hesitate to contact
him. Let’s all hope for another great trip, with great conditions, ontime planes and no injuries!!
Membership App . . . . . . . 11
The March meeting has been rescheduled to the 22nd because the
majority of the board will be on the Banff trip. And since March is the
month when we nominate new board members, we all needed to be
present. So, please mark the 22nd on your calendar. I cannot stress
enough how important it is that members step up for these open
board positions. We will be taking nominations for President,
Trip Officer, Marketing Officer and Secretary. Please consider
volunteering—the club cannot survive if we do not have members
willing to volunteer. For anyone who is not familiar with these
positions, the descriptions are in the constitution, or just contact
someone on the board for clarification. I know I speak for each and
every board member in saying we will be more than happy to help
anyone who wants to volunteer to get the their feet under them. So,
please at least give it consideration.
As always, those who still have trips to take, please have a great
time, and be careful!!

Lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy Monty Python and
the Holy Grail, the outrageously hilarious musical comedy
Spamalot re-tells the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the
Round Table, and features a bevy of beautiful show girls, not to
mention cows, killer rabbits, and French people.
The 2005 Broadway production won three Tony Awards, including
"Best Musical," and received 14 Tony Award nominations.

Early Friday morning, we loaded up a combination of 33 skiers and boarders to head east to Holimont.
Marv, the bus driver, was at Lowe’s bright and early at 5:00 AM and helped get everyone’s gear onto the
bus. Everyone was on time, and we were off and rolling down the highway at 5:30 AM as planned.
The ride there was fairly quiet as most of the passengers
went back to sleep. There were a few towards the back of
the bus that kept a low conversation with each other. We
stopped in Jamestown, NY for a short restroom break and
headed back on the road to Ellicottville. We held a 50/50
raffle which helps fund the bus driver tip for the day. We
had three winners: Nina Huhta won $60; Linda Slicker won
$40; and the two sisters, Lisa and Debbie Scheetz, pooled
their money together and won $20. Thank you to all who
participated in the drawing and helped Marv with his welldeserved tip for the day.
We arrived at Holimont around 9:20 AM. We got our gear off
the bus and headed to the slopes for some sweet skiing and
snowboarding. The weather was wonderful. It was actually a
little chillier than some had planned, and the temps were in
the mid to upper 20s with winds at 17 MPH at times. The
slopes were groomed to perfection, and it was so nice for
Dave Stewart that he skied in his SHORTS! He said that he
fell twice but had no scratches on his partially exposed legs.
We skied the entire time with no weather issues—we heard that there was a chance of freezing rain, but
that never came. When speaking to John Vorhies, he said that the conditions on Friday were the best he
has ever seen there. If you were on this trip and did not have a good time, well, that’s your own fault! I
believe that everyone who participated in this trip had a blast and cannot wait to go back again.
The 4 PM hour hit, and people started to head into the lodge
to get packed up and head back to the bus. We left
Holimont and headed to the village of Ellicottville for dinner.
People went all different ways for dinner. A lot of people did
go to the Ellicottville Brewing Co., which is a favorite.
After the two hour window for dinner and shopping, we all
made it back to the bus for the journey home. Everyone had
all their “stuff”, and nothing and nobody was left behind this
time. We had some snacks for the ride home and watched
Tomorrowland. It took a little technological help from
George Csepegi and Eric Young to get the movie going, but
we finally got to enjoy the flick for the ride home.
For those of you going to Banff, have a great time! I want to
thank everyone for a wonderful day of skiing.

Winter Park 2016 ~ Linda Slicker
On Saturday, January 30, thirty two members of the Goodyear Ski Club
gathered at the Cleveland Hopkins Airport with expectations of great snow
conditions at Winter Park. While several members were eating breakfast at
the food court, retired baseball player Jim Thome walked down the corridor.
He was leaving from the gate next to ours. While we were boarding the
plane, we discovered that Sandusky Ski Club was on the same plane but
going to Breckenridge, A-Basin and Beaver Creek. Believe it or not, with two
clubs on the same plane we still got all our luggage and skis. We loaded the
bus and were on our way to Winter Park. A stop for groceries and liquor was
made at Apple Jacks and King Soopers. About an hour later, people
returned to the bus with food and refreshments for the upcoming week.
We arrived at Winter Park Resort where one person from each condo signed in at the front desk to get
keys while the bus continued around the corner to the unloading area. There, the porters unloaded the
bus separating the luggage into carts for each condo unit. That was a nice perk to have the luggage
delivered to our condos. Teresa Gifford helped me deliver the lift tickets to each of the condos. Some
people then used the complementary shuttle to go to town for dinner while others visited one of the
restaurants in the village surrounding the Mountain Zephyr Lodge. Several people remarked that this was
the best representation of ski in/ski out our club ever had. From my condo, you walked down the hall to
the doors by the outdoor hot tubs, clicked in and skied down to the lift. For the way home, you skied down
Corridor or Hughes right to the same place next to the hot tubs.

On Sunday morning, we woke to several
inches of fresh snow and the sound of
dynamite for avalanche control. As we looked
out our windows, we saw crowds of people
gathering at the lifts for a very busy day. This
changed the minds of my condo mates and
some other people who were suffering with
symptoms of altitude sickness. We took the
complementary shuttle to Cooper Creek
Square to shop and then continued to
Safeway for groceries for the steak dinner we
planned for Sunday night. It was the shuttle
driver who told us about an herbal remedy—
Altitude Adjustment—sold at Trails End, a
little general store near the condo. Once we
started taking the pills, everyone felt relief.
As the week progressed, we were blessed with a little bit
of new snow each day. However, the temperatures were
very cold. Most of the highs were only in the teens. On
Wednesday, we woke to a low of −6°F with the winds
blowing up the slopes right into your face. It did not
warm up much that day. I was skiing with Charlotte
Martin, Cheryl Gray, Steve Hoffman and Howard Lawson.
We would take a few runs and then come in for a warmup break. When we stopped for lunch, Howard removed
his boots and socks to massage his feet to warm them
up. His feet looked very gray—possibly the beginnings of
frostbite. He stayed behind warming his feet gradually
and then skied down with Cheryl accompanying him. He
was OK, since he was in the hot tub later that afternoon
and skied the rest of the week.

On Tuesday afternoon, everyone gathered at the second floor of Doc’s Roadhouse for an après ski party
hosted by Winter Park Resort. Everyone received one drink ticket, and we had a large cheese tray. I
convinced everyone to go out on the deck so Ivonne Hart, the Winter Park representative, could take a
group picture with the slopes in the background.

Thursday night was the mid-week party at Smokin’ Moe’s in Cooper Creek Square. I reserved the shuttle
so everyone could get on the same trip. We were treated to BBQ chicken, pulled pork and ham with side
dishes of macaroni and cheese, coleslaw and boiled potatoes. It was served family style and all-you-caneat. Several people remarked that this was the best meal on any of the club trips. The meal was topped
off with a cake to celebrate my retirement. That was a great surprise engineered by Dave Collura and
Teresa Gifford. They also presented me with a card that was signed by everyone on the trip.

Randy Grether unfortunately broke a ski in the moguls. He had to ride a sled down while holding his skis
with snow flying in his face. The ski patrol took him down the hill where they then put him on a
snowmobile to take him up the hill to a lift that he could ride down to the base of the mountain. He did try
several demo skis in the following days.
Rita Tinker found a GoPro camera on a stick in the snow. With Mary Beth Grether’s help, she watched
some footage of a disabled skier. They called the adaptive program at Winter Park and thus were able to
find the owner. Kudos to Rita and Mary Beth for their honesty.
Early Saturday morning (4:45 AM) we loaded the bus and left Winter Park for the airport. The bus was
dark and quiet as everyone went back to sleep. We had several hours at the airport before our flight, thus
people were eating brunch and walking around the terminal. Sandusky Ski Club was on the same plane
again. We landed at Cleveland about ten minutes early, and everyone gathered at the baggage claim. I
think we celebrated another first—everyone got all their luggage and skis.
I want to thank all the participants for their promptness and co-operation during the trip. It made my job
much easier. Also, thank you for joining in the celebration of my retirement.
