May 1, 2010 - All livestock must be in possession of the
4-H member except junior beef and dairy calves. This
includes rabbits, poultry and horses.
4-H Council Meeting
The 4-H Council will meet May 19th at 7:00 p.m. in the
courtroom at the Courthouse. All parents, members,
leaders and volunteers are invited to attend.
4-H Project
Re-Enrollments Due
If you have not done so already, please check your 20092010 projects and the number of years in projects and
return the list or call the Office with changes. The
deadline is April 2nd.
New 4-H Members
New 4-H members can join at any time during the year.
Contact the Extension Office so that they can be put on
the mailing list and we will also send them enrollment
packages.
District Communication Arts
District Communication Arts contest will be held on
Tuesday, June 1 at Christ the King School, 505 10th Ave.
NW, Mandan, with registration at 1:00 p.m. Good luck
to our Spring Fair blue ribbon winners as they represent
Kidder County at the district competition.
4-H Ambassador Selections
The ND 4-H Ambassadors will be holding selections on
May 15, 2010. The deadline to have applications in
the Extension Office is May 5th, 2010. For more
information refer to the February 4-H newsletter.
Thank You
The Kidder County 4-H Council would like to thank the
Central Dakota Horse Club of Kidder County for their

Youth Activity Day
The 13th Annual 4-H Youth Activity Day was held
March 13th at the Steele-Dawson High School. Eighty
youth from five counties registered for the nineteen
classes held in five sessions during the morning and
early afternoon. Kidder County 4-H Council organized
and served a lunch of barbeques, chips, fruit, string
cheese, bars and milk. District 4 of the Midwest Dairy
Association furnished the milk and cheese for the event.
Many local volunteers lead class sessions. Lynn
DeKrey, Steele, started the day for everyone with
pointers on dog training and care. Kidder County
Ambulance Service volunteers taught basic first aid and
helped children put together first aid kits. Volunteers
from the Kidder County Fire Department and Sheriff
Doug Howard demonstrated how people are extricated
from crashed automobiles with emergency equipment.
Russ Partington, Steele, taught sessions in leather craft.
Local 4-H volunteers, trained in riflery, lead rifle
marksmanship classes. Tracey Harter, Driscoll, taught
scrapbooking sessions.
North Dakota University Extension personnel also
led sessions. Agents from Burleigh, Emmons, Logan,
McIntosh and Mountrail counties lead sessions in
archery, terrarium planting, a recycling craft, sewing,
Hippology and robot building. Kidder County agent
Jason Goltz taught beginning beekeeping. Kidder
County agent Floramay Miller led classes on Smoothies
and MyPyramid. Entomology Research Specialist, Don
Carey, gave sessions on insects. North Dakota Game &
Fish Outreach Biologist, Pat Lothspeich, had sessions on
wildlife.

Spring Fair
4-H Spring Fair was held March 27 at the Steele
Community Center. Four areas of competitions were
held along with a “Rabbit Mania” workshop.

Competitors in Junior and Senior Consumer Choices
Judging were Jordan Stroh, Katie Walker and Jonathan
Walker of the Steele Starlighters 4-H Club. They earned
blue ribbons and are eligible to compete at the state
contest held during the North Dakota State Fair in
Minot.
Beginners Division in Consumer Choice Judging is a
county event. Participants earned blue ribbons. They
were Lucas Subart, Farmerettes and Willing Workers
4-H Club and Andrew Walker, Jacob Pfennig and Sean
Pfennig, Steele Starlighter’s 4-H Club.
In preteen Project Expo, Sean Pfennig earned the Grand
Champion award for his “Comparing US and New
Zealand Mailboxes display. Jacob Pfennig earned the
Reserve Champion award for his “Tiger Salamanders”
display. In the teen division, Austin Howard of Steele
Starlighters 4-H Club earned the Grand Champion award
for his “Game Bids of North Dakota” display. Jonathan
Walker of Steele Starlighters 4-H Club earned the
Reserve Champion award for his “Solar: Power from the
Sun” display. All are eligible to compete at the state
contest during the ND State Fair in July.
Broadcasting: Brandon Howard, “2010 Girls & Boys
State Basketball Tournaments”; Jonathan Walker,
“Market Prices”; and Austin Howard, “Naval Aviation
on Warships”. All earned blue ribbons and are eligible
to compete at the District Communication Arts Contest.
Austin Howard earned Grand Champion on his display,
“Game Birds of North Dakota”
Communication Arts had competitions in three areas. In
Illustrated Talk, Katie Walker earned the Grand
Champion award for her “How to Care for a Lamb”
project. Receiving Blue Ribbons were Jordan Stroh with
“Caring for Your Rabbit’ and Jonathan Walker with
“How a Generator Works”. All are eligible to compete
at the District competition in Mandan.
In the preteen Demonstration division, Andy Walker
earned the Grand Champion award for his “Straw
Rockets” demonstration. In the teen division Jordan
Stroh earned the Grand Champion award for her
demonstration “Baking Chocolate Chip Cookies”. Both
will be able to compete at the District Contest in June.
Katie Walker took part in the Preteen Buy and Show
Clothing Revue and earned a blue ribbon. She is eligible
to participate in the State 4-H Clothing Revue during the
ND State Fair.

A workshop, “Rabbit Mania”, was given by Matthew
and SuAnn Olson of 5-Star Rabbitry, Mandan.
Attendees were able to observe and handle rabbits from
four breeds. The rabbits were provided by Hallie
Dronen of Kidder County Rough Riders 4-H Club.
Snacks were served by Kidder County Rough Riders 4H Club.

Council meetings are held in the courtroom of the
Courthouse in Steele. All leaders and parents are
members of the 4-H Council, although many elect not to
attend. You are encouraged to take part at any time.
Correction
On the list of Grand and Reserve Champion Plaques in
last month’s newsletter, Glue Solution was mistakenly
listed twice. It has its own plaque and is not included
under the Leather & Leisure Arts plaque.

Changes in 2010 State Fair
Exhibit List
The 2010 State Fair Exhibit List will be out in June.
Here are some changes to note:
Logan County Extension Agent Carmen Rath-Wald was
the Judge for Spring Fair. Here she speaks to
participants about their projects and how to improve
their presentations.
2010 Western Camps
The brochures for Western Camps for 2010 are enclosed
in this newsletter. Remember camper scholarships are
available for early registration. You do not have to be
in 4-H to attend. Additional information can be found
at www.ndsu.edu/4h/camp or the Extension Office.
Leader Involvement
The 4-H Council recommends that all leaders commit to
working on at least 2 events each year and attend
Council meetings.
Events include: Spring Fair, Achievement Days, Awards
Banquet and Youth Activity Day when it is hosted by
our county.
Schedule – Change Goat Tying to Wednesday after
Barrel Racing.
Class 13B Dairy Goat changed lot 1320 Buck, born in
or after August 2009.
Class 14 Horsemanship - Exhibitors may enter each lot
appropriate for their age (as of Sept. 1, 2009)
where they received a blue ribbon in a county 4-H
show since the previous state fair with the same
horse.
Class 21 Crop Production added - 4. Grain need not be
grown by the 4-H member.
2572 - Cut flowers from your garden, exhibit three of
one specie, not in a floral arrangement.
2573 - Arrangement of fresh flowers from your garden
in appropriate container
Class 30: Engineering and Technology – added this
section - Exhibitor may enter two exhibits in
engineering and technology projects not included
in classes 31 through 39.
Lot 3001 - Item made or display for engineering
technology
Lot 3002 - Second item or display for engineering
technology
Class 55 Photography – changed 10 to read - Photo tag
on back of photos should include: Name, County,
Age, Yrs in photography project, type of camera
used (Film – type and speed of film, Digital –
camera resolution/mega pixels), type of focus used –
fixed, manual, auto (for manual settings: Aperture
setting. F. Shutter speed), prints made by: (at home,
self-service machine, commercial printer), changes
made to picture using computer software. Judges
have the discretion to consider only photographs
with this information for champions. A label for this
information is available at the Extension Office.
Class 71 Food and Nutrition added Lot 7150 – Other
food (pie, etc.)
Class 63 Learn About has been dropped
Other Changes at ND State
Fair
In order to help insure the health and safety of the
exhibitors, animals and the public, all animals will have
to be checked by the State Veterinarian when arriving on
the fairgrounds. This will be done prior to the stalling of
your animals. The barns will remain locked until 3:00
p.m. on Thursday, July 22, 2010. No animals, tack or
equipment will be allowed into the barns prior to this

The 4-H Council has requested that club leaders place
meeting date and time announcements in the newsletter
each month. Members should contact their leader to
