4-H Staff Update:
4-H Interim—Charisse Orth
Hello Everyone! I am Charisse Orth and I
am excited to be the Grant County Interim
4-H Youth Development Educator until the
middle of September. I will be working
around 32 hours a week to help the 4-H
program run smoothly as we search for a
new 4-H Youth Development Agent. I am
a 4-H Alumni of the Stitzer Go-Getters,
where I was a member for over 12 years.
After graduating from 4-H, I became a
certified 4-H Shooting Sports leader and
have watched the program
expand and grow over the years. I live in
Stitzer with my husband Derek and
daughter Zeeva. It is great to be working
with the 4-H program again and I can’t wait
to see what this next year brings! If you
are in need of any assistance feel free to
reach my by phone at 608-723-2125 or
email at [email protected]. I
look forward to working with you in the
upcoming months! Charisse

year. Cathy

this fall and winter! In November we did a volunteer activity called "hunting for the hungry" we walked
around Hazel Green and asked for food donations for the food pantry then we delivered the food to the
food pantry. In December we held a food stand to raise money for an area family in need. We did
Christmas shopping for the family and also decorated cookies for people in the community that have
helped us out throughout the year. We had fun at our Christmas party with a Christmas meal and
games!

Go to Hazel Green Clever Clovers Facebook page to see all the fun activities that we do! At our
January meeting Louis Riniker gave a speech about Legos. We discussed our winter activity which will
be going to the bull riding in Dubuque. The Kraus family brought a craft project for all of us to do that we
can take to the fair this summer. We also enjoyed playing games after our meeting.

Ben Amend
I have been a 4-H volunteer for 27 years,
but I was a 4-H member until I graduated
from high school. I was helping youth with
their beef projects during and after college
so I decided to become a leader.
Wingville Clovers 4-H Club
My favorite 4-H project would probably
have to be Legos. I like it because the
possibilities for what you can make are
endless and you can just be so creative.
I am currently a beef and sheep leader in my
club. I am also the superintendent for the
sheep department at the Grant County Fair. I
have always enjoyed working with animals the
most, but there are lots of great projects that
youth can learn about in 4-H. I enjoy seeing
the hard work the kids put into their projects.
Recently, I have accomplished one of my
lifelong goals. In the month of September, I
was sworn into the United States Army and
plan to go Active Duty as a Fire Support
Specialist Airborne Ranger after I graduate
from high school in May. This is easily my
greatest accomplishment and I am proud
and ready to serve my country.
My favorite part about volunteering is
seeing the youth develop new skills and
having experiences that will last a lifetime.
My favorite part of 4-H is being able to take
part in all the different things it has to offer.
From the county fair to being a camp
counselor, 4-H has impacted my life in a
seriously cool way.
4-H is important for youth because it helps
them build lifelong skills such as: a strong work
ethic, dedication, leadership, organization,
communication, community service and
provides them with opportunities to create
friendships with other youth. It is also a great
way for families to spend time together.
I joined 4-H when I first moved to
Wisconsin from New Mexico because I
thought it would be a great way to meet
new people and help the community. Fast
forward 3 years and I am now the
President of my club and I wouldn’t want to
change a thing.

Opportunities
Have a Heart Quilting Bee: The 11th annual “Have A Heart Quilting Bee” will be held on
Saturday, February 20, (snow date February 21) from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, at the Youth & Ag
Center at the Grant County Fairgrounds, Lancaster. The Oak Hill Climbers, Stitzer Go-Getters
4-H Club, and Grant County 4-H Home Environment Committee are sponsoring the Quilting Bee.
The quilting bee was started and previously sponsored by the Grant County Extension
Homemakers. The sponsoring organizations need help and are inviting the public to join them in
making infant and toddler quilts to donate to needy families in Grant County. Last year we were able to make
approximately 100 infant and toddler quilts which were distributed to various agencies and organizations that
provide services to those in need in the Grant County Community.
Everyone is invited to participate in the event. In addition to experienced quilters and sewers who oversee
the production during the day, people with all levels of experience can help assemble and tie the quilts during
the day. Feel free to come for the day, or a few hours - whatever fits your schedule. There will be a potluck
lunch at noon. The sponsoring organizations are looking for financial sponsors and donations to cover the cost
of the fabric and materials that will be purchased prior to the event. Any donations of fabric will be appreciated
and can be left at the Extension Office at the Youth & Ag Building. If you would like to make a financial
donation or have a question, please feel free to contact: Ellen Conley at 822-3098, 12270 Roger Hollow Rd.,
Fennimore, WI 53809 or the Grant County Extension Office at 723-2125.
Roundtable Grant: 4-H clubs in Grant County may apply for a Youth
Development Grant through the Roundtable of Grant County. The Roundtable is
accepting applications each quarter (March 1, June 1, September 1, & December
1). Projects which financially assist Grant County communities and organizations

WISCONSIN STATE FAIR JUNIOR SHOW UPDATES:
Existing ownership and managerial program rules have been updated
to reflect the changing dynamics of farms and exhibitors. Beginning in
2016 there will no longer be ownership date deadlines or specific name
requirements for exhibitors entering and showing registered animals in the junior breeding stock shows and all
non-market animal shows. The updated ownership verbiage eliminates the formal Wisconsin State Fair
managerial paper submission and any previous registration transfer dates.
Youth interested in showing market beef, sheep or swine at the 2016 Wisconsin State Fair will need to have
their animal projects DNA/RFID identified through the Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium (WLIC) by
the respective Wisconsin State Fair eligibility deadlines. Wisconsin State Fair DNA/RFID identification deadlines
(postmark):
Beef: Monday – February 8, 2016
Sheep: Monday – May 10, 2016
Swine: Monday – May 10, 2016
Junior exhibitors must submit Fair entries by the June 1 entry deadline online at http://wistatefair.com/
competitions/junior-livestock/ or by mailing a paper entry postmarked June 1 or before. Please note: for 2016
there will be only be one entry deadline date for mailed and online entries at regular fees (June 1). Late entries
will be accepted for additional fees through June 8.
Also, youth will now be required to list a potential substitution entry for each animal entered at the time of entry,
in case the official animal entered is unable to be exhibited at the annual Fair. Substitutions will only be allowed
from animals declared as such on initial entry.
Additional 2016 entry and schedule information will be available at http://wistatefair.com/competitions/juniorlivestock/ or by contacting the Wisconsin State Fair Agriculture Department at [email protected].
