It is almost the beginning of September so it’s time for us to start thinking about
the traditional Oktoberfest Celebrations! There is so much at St. Mary Parish to
celebrate, and Oktoberfest gives us a perfect opportunity to do so! We are
blessed to have a parish that so strongly emits the beacon of the light of Christ
throughout our community. We continue to be this symbol of hope through the
many activities here, be it through our worship, religious education, school,
sports, adult education, or social outreach. None of this would be possible
without your substantial support of time, treasure and talents. Over and over
you continue to generously answer the call in every way.
I am asking for your support once again to make this Third Annual Oktoberfest Celebration a great
success. This is a fun way for us not only to celebrate our faith, community and Autumn, but also to
raise much-needed funds to support our Parish budget for the fiscal year. The money raised through
the raffle helps us to be able to continue all the good works done throughout the year and to help
maintain our beautiful campus.
I am asking you to join me in promoting this event by both attending the party and by purchasing the
raffle tickets which have been mailed! With the purchase of three $100 raffle tickets, either by you
or family or friends, it will help to make this Oktoberfest a true success! The Grand Prize is $10,000
and there are four chances to win a $500 second place prize. Only 500 tickets will be sold, so your
odds are pretty good! But you can’t win without a ticket, so purchase yours early!
We would love to see you on Saturday, October 10th, from 6:00-11:00 p.m. in the St. Mary Parish
Center. Tickets are only $25 for adults and $10 for children, if purchased in advance, or $30 for
adults and $15 for children if purchased at the door. This includes German sausage, German potato
salad, sauerkraut, dessert and soft drinks, as well as live music and activities for the children!!
Beer and wine will be sold separately. There will be a $20 mug for unlimited beer! A large-screen
TV will be set up in the tent so you don’t miss the football games. There isn’t a deal this good
anywhere, not even in Munich!
As always, thank you for your generous support. I look forward to sharing this wonderful
celebration with you and continuing a great tradition at St. Mary Parish.

Time, Talent and Treasure
On any given day of the week you will see lay leaders and volunteers engaged in various ministries and
activities here on the St. Mary campus -- and more often than not in the evening as well. Just a quick
look on the Parish website reveals the depth & breadth of roles and responsibilities covered by dedicated
members of our faith community. From Mass Volunteers and Altar Servers to the Counters and Garden
Ministry Volunteers, and beyond, ALL of the time, effort and energy invested by the countless individuals
and families fulfilling essential parish stewardship needs truly help to make St. Mary the special place that
it is.
Our collective commitment to one another and to people outside of our community is
nothing short of remarkable.
In many ways, the Building for the Future Campaign is an extension of this same spirit and commitment.
We are all familiar with the phrase “Time, Talent and Treasure”, and, since our humble beginning back
in the 1870’s, the people of St. Mary have continued to offer these gifts in abundance. That is one reason
why this campaign is so important, and why everyone’s financial commitment to its success is crucial.
Following the roadmap of our Parish Master Plan, the priorities to be accomplished will not only meet
some of our most pressing needs today, but the goals we will accomplish together will truly help to shape
the lasting future of our faith community.

Dr. Terry Nelson Johnson-Street - Theologian, Educator
and Storyteller - will moderate a workshop on Healthy
Relationships. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and
friends play a crucial role in helping to prevent risky
relationships/behaviors in teens. This is open to
all adults and is sure to be a fun, enlightening and
interactive workshop.
Each adult attending will participate in a drawing for
a free chance to win a family outing (4 tickets) to a
White Sox game. Drawing will occur at the end of
the workshop.
THIS WORKSHOP IS FREE, BUT ANY DONATION TO HELP
COVER COST IS APPRECIATED.

ATTENTION ALL MOMS OF INFANTS THROUGH TEENS!
Please consider selling your child’s/children’s gently used fall/winter clothing, shoes, toys,
books, sports equipment, and baby equipment at our consignment sale. Our (44th!) sale will take
place in the Parish Center on Saturday, September 26, from 9:00 a.m. until noon. (Sorry, but strollers and children
under 13 will not be permitted into the sale until 10:30 a.m!) Sellers price and tag their items using tickets
provided in the seller packet. Seller packets are available in the narthex. Bring tagged items the afternoon/evening
before the sale, and we staff the sale.
You may choose to have unsold items returned to you after the sale, or you may donate unsold items. We have
several deserving groups, including individual families in need, who are thrilled with our left-overs! Sellers and the
Respect Life Committee split the profits 50/50; our half is donated to crisis pregnancy centers. A check is sent to
sellers about a week after the sale.
Volunteers who work 3 hours (either during the sale or the clean-up) are able to attend a pre-sale.
This is a win/win project! Please help support our ministry by participating as a seller, buyer, volunteer or all three!

eager to embrace the Catholic Faith. If you

Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation,
please call Sr. Margaret. We will begin meeting
sometime after Labor Day. Letters will be sent
to interested parties.
Each of us is called to be an Evangelizer in
whatever way is possible. Our RCIA is one of the
special ways our parish meets the needs of those
who have a desire to embrace our faith, or for
those who wish to renew and refresh their faith.
I know I can count on each of you to help recruit
interested folks.

Fr. Charles Dahm, O.P. is a member of the Steering Committee of the Chicago Says No
More Campaign. Chicago Says No More is dedicated to addressing the challenges of
domestic violence and sexual assault in the Chicago metro area. It is aligned with the
national NO MORE campaign that was started by a coalition of leading advocacy groups,
service providers, and major corporations. The initial goals of Chicago Says No More are to:
 Marshal resources of the Chicago metro area to combat domestic violence and sexual assault.  Change the culture and conversation about domestic violence and sexual assault so citizens can make a
difference.
 Provide fresh, innovative ways to leverage resources offered by myriad not-for-profit domestic violence and
sexual assault organizations by establishing system-wide solutions to challenges they experience. Information about domestic abuse and resources are also available on that website.
