Parents, we need you!
These years are important ones for our
juniors, teens and their parents. We are
looking for concerned, caring parents to
meet regularly to discuss improving our
programs. It is your input that will help us
to have the best type of activities to better serve our youth. For more information call Glenn or Stephanie, 718.475.5231
or 718.475.5232.
Scouts
Our Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts
programs are constantly expanding under
the leadership of exceptional men and
women. Thanks to Boy Scout leader Kevin
Brosnick and Girl Scout leaders Lisa Rosenfeld, Geanine Rando and Eva Deforest, our
scouting program has been a tremendous
success! Boy Scout and Girl Scout meetings
take place two times per month.
The JCC Scouting program offers youth an
opportunity to develop skills, leadership
ability and confidence while building lifelong
friendships. Through meetings, trips, community service projects and workshops, the
scouts learn, grow and have a great time.
We also have scouting programs that serve
children with special needs.
We are always looking to grow and for volunteers to lead and assist groups. If you are
interested in learning more about this rewarding experience or would like to enroll
your child, please contact Stephanie at
[email protected] or 718.475.5232.

is spent in New York State alone!
Decreasing the social acceptability of
tobacco use is a dire need.

Day Habilitation
March 9 – 12
Each year, the JCC is proud to join other organizations in the metropolitan area in
showcasing films depicting the unique triumphs and challenges experienced by individuals with special needs. We invite guests
to attend viewings as well as participate in
discussion following these extraordinary
movies about extraordinary people. Watch
for names of films, trailers and schedule on

Our Day Habilitation Program for Young
Adults offers our participants an array of social and vocational activities in collaboration
with local organizations and our home
agency. With professionally supported direct
care staff, we engage our participants in opportunities to be healthy, social, and active
members of the community with a maximum
degree of independence; ultimately aiming
to establish the groundwork for optimal success in achieving their highest potential as
they transition into adulthood.

Marvin’s camp is a
unique recreational
summer program
customized for children with special
needs. After a six
weeks of dance
classes, swimming,
social skills and
field trips, the children show off their skills in a dance performance for their families and relive the
summer through a picture slide show. With
a wide array of both social and developmental activities, children are engaged by
trained and professionally-supported staff
to create some of the best memories of
their summer.
Pearl’s Project
Pearl’s Project allows for elementary
school aged children to experience social
networking through a secure blog. Facilitated by professional staff, children are
asked to share their experiences around
their disability as well as their unique interests. Our children benefit from responses
by typical peers. This is a great way to
safely introduce our children to social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
Disabilities Advisory
Committee
Our agency seeks to collaboratively design
programs for individuals with special
needs. Our Disabilities Advisory Committee
provides guidance around developing program goals as well as the steps necessary
for accomplishing Special Needs Department objectives. Establishing program
goals and mission statements are vital
components of our programs success, and
the committee ensures we have the best
staff and optimal resources for achievement.
ReelAbilities
The NY Disabilities Film Festival is dedicated to promoting awareness and appreciation

shared human experience.

At the JCC, our core values of trust, caring, integrity, passion, happiness and personal fitness guide everything that we do at the
South Shore fitness center. Our goal is that every member is
treated like an individual and feels supported and motivated to get
fit, and most importantly, have fun in the process. Visit our up to
date fitness facility and get yourself into the best shape ever. All
our equipment is new including our Cardio Theater TV system mounted on treadmills. We
provide an array of services and offer an extensive selection of cardiovascular fitness equipment. We have a large selection of free group exercise classes geared to every level. Our
personnel are trained to educate members about the equipment and assist with workouts.
Our Personal Trainers hold nationally recognized certifications and are CPR/AED certified.

these orientations grow into a comprehensive fitness assessment session (Personal Training) and relationships between the member and trainer are well established as you reach

Beacon Programs
I.S. 49 JCC/Beacon Program
Ingrid Ebanks, Director 718.556.1565
Steve Kessler, Afterschool Coordinator
Now in its 15th year of service to the communities of Park Hill and Stapleton on the
north shore of Staten Island, the JCC/Beacon Program offers a wide variety of essential services to school age children as
well as adults. Our mission is to provide
activities that are not generally available
to residents of these communities. Regularly scheduled afterschool, evening and
Saturday programs include academic tutoring, social services, recreation, leadership development, music, dance, art and
drama as well as nutritional counseling,
pregnancy prevention, good health recommendations, cultural and educational
special events.
We provide services to over 1,200 youth
and adults each month.
Tottenville JCC/Beacon
Program at Tottenville High School
Cliff Bloom, Director 718.605.3033
The JCC/Beacon program at Tottenville
High School provides opportunities to
community residents of the south shore of
Staten Island. Our goal is to offer additional services such as: academic tutoring,
recreation, leadership development and
social services, all free of charge to our
community.
As we enter our third year at Tottenville,
we will be serving over 1,800 students and
adults each month. We will continue to
offer services and activities that are necessary but not as available to our community residents as they would like. We will
try and be a resource for a lack of services
that our community residents’ desire.
JCC/Beacon Cornerstone Program
Ingrid Ebanks, Supervisor
Debra Fredrick, Onsite Director

Starting its third year, the JCC/Beacon Satellite provides services for both children
and adults in the NYCHA Housing in Stapleton. Similar to the IS 49 program, there is
an afterschool program for children followed by diverse activities for adults in the
evening. Activities at the Beacon Satellite are age appropriate and based on the expressed needs and interests of the participants. In April, 2011 Cornerstone moved into
the Gerard Carter Community Center. Regularly scheduled afterschool, evening and
Saturday programs include academic, recreational, social services, and the arts.
Community Solar Powered Generator
The JCC has been selected as a host site of a
community solar powered generator for use on
all of Staten Island. In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy the need for emergency power was
a prime consideration. The generator can’t
power a house or building. However people can
charge cell phones, laptops, power tools, small
refrigerators, lighting, etc. The generator was
provided by Solar 1, a non-profit organization
concerned with green energy, arts, and education. The generators are made by DC Solar Solutions, distributed by Consolidated Solar and the deployment is sponsored by HSBC Bank.
