• Folding push handles are the ideal solution
for many active users. Available when
needed, they are easy to fold out of the way
when they are not.
• The angle-adjustable back is useful whenever
the wheelchair exhibits a noticeable seat
angle. With this option, the back can be
adjusted perpendicular to the floor.
• The Backster, a fixed back with breathable
upholstery, can be removed from the wheelchair
in a single step. It is the right choice whenever
enhanced back stability is in demand.
• Business upholstery is an enhanced seat
upholstery option with a catheter pocket.
Several small pockets are also provided for
items such as a telephone, wallet, keys and
more.
• The tube armrest swings away to the side
and can be removed. It can be combined
with all side panels not equipped with an
armrest.
• The shock absorber dampens ground
impacts. This effectively helps reduce
problems such as induced spasticity.
• The quick-release axle with tetra-release
allows persons with limited hand functionality
to independently remove the rear wheels.
• Not only does the slip-resistant footplate
enhance the look of the wheelchair, it also
prevents slipping on the otherwise smooth
surface – ideal for barefoot use as well.
• The heel band ensures that the feet are
securely positioned on the footplate and do
not slide away to the rear.
• The adjustable side locking mechanism can
be adapted to all aluminium footplates and
improves foot positioning.
• Froglegs spring-loaded caster forks reliably
cushion all impacts to the caster wheels from
uneven surfaces. This softens the driving
characteristics.

Particularly active users who demand a lot from their
wheelchair find a reliable companion in the Ventus.
The rigid-frame wheelchair for active use sets itself
apart with high stability and a robust design. The
timeless design of this agile wheelchair for everyday
use deliberately forgoes ornamentation and is
focused on the essentials. Every frame is individually
fabricated and available with two different load
capacity limits (100 kg and 140 kg). This ensures that
the Ventus can be easily moved and loaded without
problems by more agile users, while large and strong
people also obtain a reliable product that easily
masters all the demands of a busy day-to-day
schedule.

• The swing-away push handles ensure that an

• The back upholstery with spacer fabric
combines the advantages of lightweight,

• The ultra-light back upholstery does not have
padding, so as to reduce weight and provide
excellent air circulation.
• The extended frame design ensures that
wheelchairs with a small seat depth always
retain sufficient space for a highly active
centre of gravity setting.

the wheel arch and offers a practical dirt
deflector as well.
• The performance wheel lock is a good choice
for users who like to move around quickly,
since the brake bolt swings down out of the

room for the hands.
• The rear wheel adapter is available in three
lengths, depending on the desired seat
height. It can be continuously shifted along
the frame for perfect centre of gravity adjustment.

not scratched, even in case of frequent
contact with obstacles.

secured against rotation, and can be swung
to the active position in a single step.
• Froglegs soft rolls are a perfect visual match

"Feeling your being"
Martin Braxenthaler collects gold medals like others
pick mushrooms. The mono-skier earned ten gold
medals at the 2002, 2006 and 2010 Paralympic
Games alone. At the 2014 Paralympic Games, he
attended just as a spectator for the first time. Yet he
remains active in sports – with sport equipment from
Ottobock. "Sport is my life. I need to feel my body.
There is no better way to feel your being than during
sports in nature."
That is why Martin Braxenthaler rides e-bikes from
Ottobock. "I can adapt the bikes precisely to myself
and my body. This allows me to focus entirely on
movement."
Like all sport and outdoor wheelchairs from Ottobock, the e-bikes were developed and tested by
wheelchair users. Since all components are made of
premium materials such as aluminium, carbon or
titanium, they are suitable for all applications; for
everyday sports just as well as the quest for gold

Seats and
seating systems
"You only set world records if it
fits"
"Whether I come in first or third, it's mainly about
the sport for me," says Thomas Frühwirth, better
known as TiggerTom, who has been a paraplegic
since a motorcycle accident (paraplegia L1).
The list of his titles and achievements keeps on
growing: He is a winner of the Ironman Hawaii,
holds several world records, has set new course
records nearly every time he participated – and
always has new goals. "I have always enjoyed life
immensely and sought out challenges."
Participating so much in endurance sports, he
knows the importance of seats and seating systems:
"After all, I work in rehabilitation technology myself
and sell the products. What good is the fastest
wheelchair to you if you are sitting on blisters? You
only set world records if it fits."
TiggerTom knows: "Seat cushions and back systems
are essential for comfort." They are only right if you
do not feel them anymore. They have to meet the
requirements of each individual wheelchair user.
That is why we developed "The Back", a back system
that can be precisely adapted to the user. Combined
with one of the many comfortable cushions, it
ensures stable support and protects the skin. For
active athletes just as much as users with highly
sensitive skin or riders who need more effective
support. Not everyone has to break world records
with it. But nobody should be prevented from
accepting personal challenges.

Back systems
The Back
"The Back" is a firm back system built for wheelchairs according to the modular principle. It supplements the seating system and ensures increased
sitting tolerance and comfort. Different designs allow "The Back" to be individually adapted.
A simple mechanism makes it possible to adapt "The Back" to the wheelchair or to remove it for transporting. The wheelchair remains collapsible.
"The Back" can be supplemented with headrests from our product range.

Add-on drives
"More power for more mobility"
Mobility in a manual wheelchair requires a lot of arm
strength on the part of the user. Travelling uphill or
downhill or over longer distances is very strenuous
or even impossible, causing the user to tire quickly.
Power add-on drives for manual wheelchairs are
small but highly effective. They are easy to install on
the wheelchair and boost or replace the effort
expended by the user. Yet the wheelchair remains as
manoeuvrable and easy to transport as before.

eSupport
The power drive for a wider range of activity

on the Motus CV
Users who choose an add-on drive want precise support: exactly as
much additional force as necessary. With the eSupport, the servo-assisted auxiliary drive for manual wheelchairs, the user is assured of
individual support. With the eSupport, highly sensitive sensors
measure the amount of force applied to the rear wheels by the user.
Two electric motors integrated in the hub then provide precisely the
desired dosage of additional force. The force is continuously adjustable
by the user on each side according to the requirements. What's more,
the user can choose between two different modes for indoor and
outdoor use. Especially important for many: The wheelchair is just as
space-saving when folded as it was before.

For more freedom in everyday life

Avantgarde CV
Users who do not depend on a power wheelchair but require occasional
support in their wheelchair for active use on longer trips are perfectly
equipped with the z50 add-on drive. It provides them with a larger
range of activity and greater mobility. Powerful, long-lasting and with a
swinging anti-tipper for curbs:
With the z50, a manual wheelchair assumes the characteristics of a
power wheelchair. The add-on drive therefore meets the needs for
dynamics, endurance and more everyday freedom. Just latch it on, lock
it and off you go. And it can still be folded after the trip.

accessories
"More freedom is always possible"
Those who depend on a wheelchair have to learn
how to live with restrictions. Day after day, the
developers at Ottobock attempt to keep pushing the
limits, enabling more mobility and independence.
Here the accessories play an essential role, since
they make it possible to adapt wheelchairs to the
individual situations of many users.
Wheelblades (page 88) from the inventor Patrick
Mayer are the best example. A partial paraplegic, he
depends on a wheelchair. "It always made me very
sad that my mobility was restricted so much when it
snowed, and I had to really think about where I was
able to go. Not to mention that I have always loved
winter and the snow."
That is why he developed the Wheelblades: skis for
wheelchairs and buggies. The caster wheels can be
attached to the runners with a simple click so they
cannot sink into the snow any longer. "I made my
dream of more freedom come true with the Wheelblades."
And, as Ottobock developers know, the right
accessories will always create more freedom.

The forearm angle adjustment unit allows settings of 0°, 12.5°, and 25°. Two horizontal adjustment functions are available:
a) Continuous adjustment; the locking pin is lifted and rotated by 180°.
b) In increments of approximately 15°; the locking pin must be in the locking position.
This swivel unit is compatible with all Ottobock modular channel forearm rests. The swivel unit can be mounted on the left or right side of the wheelchair. It is supplied ready for
right-hand installation. With some minor adjustments, it can be installed on the left side.
Attention: Using the swivel unit increases the height of the armrest by approximately 30 mm. In order to compensate for this, install a height-adjustable armrest. For the
Avantgarde Desk side panel, a swivel unit for a tube diameter of 19 mm is required. A tube diameter of 20 mm is required for the Start series.

The foot shells offer comfortable, secure support. They can be used for seating systems or wheelchairs. On standard wheelchairs, the foot shells are installed directly onto the
existing footplate. The foot shells consist of an ABS shell and a soft PU foam pad. The pad and sandals are ordered separately.
Ottobock offers the foot shells in two sizes (large and medium); both have an angle of 90°.

Custom fabrication
"Limits we can overcome"
René has been a wheelchair user for more than 20
years – and a developer at Ottobock: "When you
have twenty years of experience with wheelchairs,
you know what counts: the dimensions, the weight
and everything you need in day-to-day life."
People like René make it possible for Ottobock to
ensure an optimum fitting, even in case of challenging clinical pictures. "We ourselves know exactly
what matters in development; whether you need
hard edges or a low weight."
Yet even René's development department cannot
meet every need. When variable modular systems
encounter their limits due to specific personal
limitations, the Custom Fabrication team comes into
its own: Because we at Ottobock truly want to give
everyone the greatest possible freedom of movement.
Custom Fabrication develops individual solutions for
manual and power wheelchairs, electric adaptations
and seating systems. Quality assurance in Custom
Fabrication is realised with exacting controls and
detailed inspections. We also protect medical supply
companies and patients with a declaration of
conformity.
For René, the work of Custom Fabrication is an
incentive for the development of new standard
models: "We learn a lot from these specialists every
day. There are always limits which we can overcome."
6
• Custom fabrication
A wide variety of individual solutions
Wherever "off-the-shelf" products or methods no longer
help, we do: Ottobock Custom Fabrication attempts to
assist those whose needs demand even more individualisation. Examples include special cushions, custom
controls, footrest modifications and many other
adaptations.
For the user this means a plus in wellbeing with the
greatest possible independence and individual freedom.
For technicians and therapists, it means excellent
support in their work.

112 Ottobock | Active, sports and outdoor wheelchairs
Here's how it works
A competence team of designers, engineers,
technicians and machinists individually examines
what can be realised through custom fabrication
and how. They look for a tailor-made solution to
every individual problem. We also consult experts
from other disciplines when required, such as
product specialists, therapists and fitting providers.
Here we first attempt to solve the problem by
modifying a proven standard product (in part for
time and cost reasons). But if this does not work,
we will also develop an entirely new, unique
solution that is tailored to the needs of the user
down to the smallest details.
6
Avantgarde with front-wheel drive
Series production of manual wheelchairs with
front-wheel drive ceased a long time ago, but
requests for such a solution keep on coming.
Front-wheel drive chairs are highly manoeuvrable
indoors with a bit of practice and some users have
become accustomed to this technology. We produce
wheelchairs with front-wheel drive in Custom
Fabrication for this special target group on request.

"I make my own choices now"
Andreas demands high-tech, Martin likes to hurtle
through nature, Patrick pushes the snow aside, René
wants to make wheelchairs better … All of the people
we present in this catalogue – and all wheelchair
users out there – have their own passion and love of
life. Their wheelchair has to fit them.
They want to make the choice. Or as Nina puts it:
"Others used to decide for me. Now I make my own
decisions." For some people like Nina (photo left),
fashion is an expression of their individuality. For
others it is the colour of their wheelchair. Because it
has to match the dress – or express their character.
There are as many motives as lives. And the right
colour for everyone.

Tastes differ – fortunately – and favourite colours play a special role. So why shouldn't medical
devices take this into account?
At least we at Ottobock do. Even when selecting the frame colour.
