We will notify the winners as soon as we know. A reminder that each family that sold at least 4 items will be treated to a pizza party by Mr. Chen in the near future. Congratulations to the Woodlan Elementary Spell Bowl team. We came in 2nd in our division at the competition on November 20th and were ranked 24th in the State of Indiana. I’ve noticed a few dangerous situations during morning car riders that I am asking parents/guardians to help with. Many times, I’ve seen cars that will drive around others to go near the front of the line to drop off. This creates the potential for someone to get hurt or have an accident. Please be patient and wait in line. I am also asking that cars pull up as far as they can so that we have room for more cars to pull in. Also, please have your students prepared before you stop so all they have to do is unbuckle their seatbelts and get out of the vehicle. Thank you for your help with this. As the weather is changing, I want to remind everyone to please pay close attention to the weather so that students are dressed appropriately and also are wearing their coats, hats, and gloves. No student should be coming to school in shorts. Students will be allowed to wear shorts to school again at the beginning of the 4 th quarter. There are times that East Allen County Schools will delay or cancel school due to inclement weather. EACS does have a 3 hour delay schedule. If a 3 hour delay is called then school will begin three hours later than normal and will dismiss one hour later than normal. This means Woodlan Elementary would dismiss at 3:45 p.m. Please DO NOT call the school offices for delay/cancelation information. East Allen County Schools will update delay/cancelation information on the EACS website, local channels, and radio stations. —Michael Chen, Woodlan Elementary Principal Counselor’s Corner December 2014 Website of the month: www.WorryWiseKids.org From Dr. Tamar Chansky Creator of Worrywisekids.org From the website…. Are you worrying about your anxious child? You are not alone. Anxiety is the number one mental health problem facing children and adolescents today, but it is also the most treatable. If you are the parent of one of the millions of children who suffer from excessive fears and anxieties, we're here to help. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for anxious children and their families by providing parents, educators and mental health professionals with comprehensive, user-friendly information on the full range of anxiety disorders: how to identify symptoms, find effective treatments and, and prevent anxiety from taking hold in a child's life. Without intervention, children tend to grow into their fears, not grow out of them. But once children have learned how to challenge worry's authority and outsmart the tricks the brain can play, they are no longer at the whim of their fearful imaginations. Today, kids with anxiety can expect to learn the skills they need to lead a full and happy life. You can help them get there. Book of the month: What to Do When You Worry Too Much: A Kid's Guide to Overcoming Anxiety By: Dawn Huebner "What to Do When You Worry Too Much" is an interactive self-help book designed to guide 6-12 year olds and their parents through the cognitivebehavioral techniques most often used in the treatment of generalized anxiety. Engaging, encouraging, and easy to follow, this book educates, motivates, and empowers children to work towards change. It includes a note to parents by psychologist and author Dawn Huebner, PhD. Veterans Day Program 2014 At the Woodlan Elementary School on November 10, 2014 they held a Veterans Day program. The whole school was involved. Sixth grade sang the songs of the five branches of the United States Military, while the band played the music. Fifth grade held up the American flag. Miss. Kowatch’s class did a white table and also read the book that goes along with it. The elementary choir sang the song “American Tears”. Then the First grade did a presentation to honor all veterans living and dead. Near the end of the program the Honor Society presented a check for the honor flight that the high school and elementary school raised money for. They raised over $1800.00. Also Sixth graders Michelle Yoder, Aidan Baughman, Bryan Chen, Collin Quaintance, Jesse Foust, and Ella Palm, read their poems that they wrote in class. All of the students wrote poems but only the best were read. Sixth graders Teven Householder wore the Coast Guard uniform, Joshua Perkins wore the Marines uniform, Lane Fox wore the Air Force uniform, Caleb Quaintance wore the Navy uniform, and Ashley VanHorn wore the Army uniform. Richard Loney a veteran spoke at the meditation part of the event. He spoke about veterans with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Thank you to all of the veterans. Jacob Kurtz WOODLAN HOSTS VETERANS DAY CELERATION On November 10, 2014, Woodlan Elementary held a Veterans Day program to honor all Veterans. There were over 100 people, veterans and over 500 students. Kids from kindergarten to seniors, band players to singers, uncles, aunts, grandparents, and even parents who had come to see the phenomenal performance put on by the school. First, they began by welcoming everybody to the program. Next, the Woodlan and the New Haven bands began to play music. Throughout the program students read poems written by sixth graders. Then, students began to sing military songs that they had worked on making perfect for weeks. Military banners began being carried in to the center of the gym. Veterans stood to be recognized as their branch of the service was honored. Woodlan presented a check for the Honor Flight that students from Woodlan had raised money for. Finally, the high school principal, Mr. Kammeyer, gave a quick speech and then people began being dismissed. When the program was over I asked a sixth grade teacher from Woodlan Elementary, Mrs. Gibson, “How do you think the Veterans Day program went?” she replied, “I thought it was excellent and everybody did their part wonderfully.” -Tanner Bair One Good Program Veterans from all branches of the service came to this program. They were honored, respected, filled with joy, a lot of them even cried. They got cookies and the fifth grade kids were covered in an American flag and stood up and down to make it look as if the flag were waving in the wind. The students were very well behaved at the program. The bands performed excellently. It really was outstanding! The poems were beautiful. They played the Army’s, the Navy’s, Marine’s, Coast Guard’s, and the Air Force’s hymns while the children sang them. Students carried each branch of the services’ banners as the songs were played. The speakers did wonderfully, as did the banner-holders. Really, the whole thing was just extraordinary, beautiful, awesome, outstanding. -Bryan Chen Veterans Day Program Veterans Day is a day to honor the soldiers that fought for our freedom. The Woodlan schools honored the veterans by having a program. The program had the first graders singing a few songs for the veterans. The little second graders did the little white table. There were six poems read to the guests and two people read the names of active duty military. The sixth graders sang with the high school choir . The Elementary choir sang “American Tears” with the music teacher . It was an outrageous event! The school made almost $2,000 for the Honor Flight program and Shoey Koos was the one to give the check to the veteran. Caleb Quintance, Josh Perkins, Lane Fox, Teven Householder, and Ashley Vanhorn stood at attention in uniform as Army, Navy, Marines, Cost Guard, Air Force soldiers. They gave out roses and candy to all the veterans. It was phenomenal to be at that program. -Mattie Reed Veterans Day Program November 10th was Veterans Day at Woodlan Elementary. We had kids from the Sixth grade greet the veterans as they came in. The veterans got bags of candy and mints. The people who came got coffee, water, and cookies. As everyone came in we heard the Woodlan 7th & 8th grade band and New Haven Middle School played with them. When everyone was seated we heard an introduction from Mr.Chen, the principal. Then a girl walked up and told us to stand as we listened the choir sing “The Star Spangled Banner”. We had a few kids come in dressed up in uniforms carrying wreaths for each branch of the military and a kindergartener in front of them with a red flower. The kindergartener sat down as the uniformed kid put the wreath on the stand. There were banners and Color Guard marching. There were 6th graders on the stands. Soon they stood up and started singing along with the high school choirs. They sang songs for the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard. Then they thanked the veterans for coming. -Leah K. Thomas Veterans Day! The Veterans Day program was so much fun! There was one part that really touched my heart. When we were singing the songs all the Veterans stood up when it was their military song. Once we started singing the Marines song this Veteran was in wheelchair and he was raising his hand and 2 women helped him stand up! Then he started crying. I almost cried myself. I loved all the songs people sang! The elementary choir was really good. The show choir was really good too! I’m not just saying that because my brother was in it. The whole program touched my heart! I hope it did to yours too! I just wanted to thank the people who came to this outstanding program! We love to celebrate what our Veterans did for us so we did this program to say Thank you!
