Please check the announcement mentioned later in this Tin Tuc regarding details. It should prove to be a wonderful evening of fun and relaxation. As our Grade 5-12 students go off next week for their annual trips, I wanted to once again express our sincere thanks to the faculty and staff who are giving up several days and nights of their personal time to be with our students 24/7. They do it because they want to do it. They understand the value that these kinds of experiences have for our students. The curriculum learning, the cultural orientation and appreciation of our wonderful host country of Vietnam, the service opportunities, and the bonding and connecting with old and new friends are many of the reasons why we do this. The faculty willingly guides these experiences with enthusiasm, strength and a desire to make a difference with our students. These experiences are extremely important in the academic lives and social development of our students and the memories established are often the ones the students remember most as they look back on this time in their lives. The commitment and dedication of the faculty and staff is exemplary and deserve our deepest appreciation. Hieu Phan , 11G who left UNIS Hanoi this week. Alexander (Xander) Neff , 1JH Yoo Jun An, 5JH Sorcha Hamer, 9A Finally, a reminder that our “Hors d’Oeuvres with the Head of School” will be next Tuesday evening at 1900 in the Community Room in B7. Please join the me and other administrators as we make a brief presentation about the Accreditation process we are currently going through and then take all of your questions, concerns and suggestions. These quarterly sessions (two evening sessions and two morning sessions) are offered to provide parents on a quarterly basis with direct access to the senior leadership team including myself for questions, concerns and suggestions. It also helps us keep the pulse of the community in terms of what are the topics that parents are interested in, need some clarification about, or have some concerns with. We hope to see as many of you there as possible. Respectfully, Dr. Chip Barder, [email protected] Our students have all responded and are ready for their honour of carrying the flags for our spectacular Parade of Nations during the UN day on October 10th. We now have the following nations represented: Angola Argentina Australia Austria Azerbaijan Bangladesh Belarus Belgium Bolivia Bulgaria Canada Chile China Colombia Costa Rica Cyprus Czech Republic Denmark Ethiopia France Finland Georgia Germany Ghana Guatemala Hungary India Indonesia Ireland Israel Italy Japan Kazakhstan Kenya Korea Laos Kuwait Latvia Lebanon Lithuania Malaysia Mexico Netherlands New Zealand Nicaragua Norway Pakistan Philippines Poland Russia Seychelles Singapore South Africa Spain Sudan Sweden Switzerland Tanzania Thailand Turkey Uganda Ukraine UNIS Hanoi United Kingdom United States Uzbekistan Vietnam UN Flag Students who are carrying their flag are asked to wear clothing that represents these countries - this may be traditional clothing or specific colours of the flag- we ask that students refrain from wearing sports clothing however. If a student has an affinity to more than one country then they can illustrate this in their choice of clothing. We also encourage all students, teachers, parents and community members to wear clothing to represent their international diversity on this special celebratory day. Students in the flag parade are expected to participate in 3 practices in the Sports Centre as follows: Friday, 3rd October, 13:15 -14:05 Wednesday, 8th October, 14:45 - 16:00 (please note that no UNIS Hanoi bus transportation will be provided) Thursday, 9th October, full rehearsal on 9:45-11:05 For any questions in what can become a complex process, please do not hesitate to contact our lead coordinator for the Parade of Nations, ES Deputy Principal, Jan Humpleby: [email protected] Today in the Elementary School, everyone was asked to wear white. This is how UNIS Hanoi is showing its commitment to Peace Day which falls on 21st September. For this day, individual schools, NGOs, religious communities, corporations, the UN and governments around the world are taking action for lasting and sustainable peace and unity. As IB Learners we expect our students to “engage with issues and ideas that have local and global significance” (Knowledgeable) and to “use critical and creative thinking skills to analyse and take action on complex problems” (Thinkers). We also ask our students to seek and evaluate a range of points of views and to be willing to grow from the experience.” (Open-minded.) Ms Jan again organised special assemblies to mark the occasion and to focus on these aspects of being an IB Learner . This year the 40 new members of the two ES Student Councils were asked to comment on the following: “What is peace?” “Where does it come from?” “How can you find it?” “How can you keep it?” You can listen to their thoughts and ideas here. The video also includes a short film made by some Grade 3 students earlier this week: they decided to take action themselves to promote peace by exploring peaceful friendships. This is just one of the many ways that UNIS Hanoi fulfils the expectations of being an IB World School, which are expressed through the Programme Standards and Practices (e.g. Standard A4: “The school develops and promotes international-mindedness and all attributes of the IB Learner Profile across the school.” Standard B2.6 “The School ensures access to information on global issues and diverse perspectives.”) It also helps us fulfil our commitment to the UN Principles expressed in our UNIS Missions Statement: Promote peaceful solutions to problems Wishing you a peaceful and happy weekend, Carole Denny, ES Principal [email protected] Last week (Friday 12th September 2014) Grade 3 went to the Alive Museum /Trick Art Gallery on the 72nd floor of Landmark 72. The visit supported our current Unit of Inquiry Talking Without Words which is under the theme 'How We Organise Express'. We had the chance to put ourselves in the art work, and look at the devices used by artists such as size, colour, position and gestures to communicate with the audience. We also got to use the 5D cinema and see some great views. This trip also allowed us to put some of our tech skills into practice. The students used the G3 iPads to take their own pictures, edit, delete, retake pictures and upload them to the correct folders in the G3 drop box. While for many using iPads was not a problem, completing all the tasks required team work. Pink eye is back in Hanoi and is making an appearance at UNIS. Please be advised of the school’s policy on conjunctivitis (pink eye). If you suspect your child has conjunctivitis please seek medical advice. Symptoms of conjunctivitis are: Red eyes Watery discharge (viral infections and will run its course without antibiotics) A yellow or green discharge common in bacterial infections (and will require antibiotics) Feeling of grit or sand Itchy eyes Sensitivity to light Swollen eyelids Crusts that form on the eyelid overnight (bacterial infection) Students must remain at home until there is NO discharge from the eyes. Wet combing campaigns have been very successful in treating and preventing re- infestations of lice in schools. Wet combing consists of: Wash the hair in the normal way with ordinary shampoo. Rinse out the shampoo and put on lots of ordinary conditioner. Comb the hair with a normal comb to get rid of tangles. When the hair is untangled switch to the detection comb, if you do not have a lice comb, UNIS will provide one for each family, please come by the nurse’s office. Slot the teeth of the detection comb into the hair at the roots so it is touching the scalp. Draw the detection comb through to the tips of the hair. Make sure that all parts of the hair are combed by working around the head. Check the comb for lice after each stroke by wiping on a towel or rinsing in a bowl of hot water. After you have combed the whole head, rinse out the conditioner. If head lice are found, wet combing should be repeated every 3 days for 2-3 weeks or until no lice are found for 3 consecutive combings. Weekly combing sessions should be carried out to prevent and/or detect any re-infestation. School Health Centre, [email protected] Head lice have been reported in the ES. This is a gentle reminder that frequent inspections of your child's head & the continued diligence of parents will keep lice infestations at a minimum. UNIS Hanoi recommends weekly inspections using the wet combing procedure, details of this treatment can be found You will all have heard of the Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa. If you were wondering about the possibility of Ebola reaching Vietnam, the risk remains minimal.
