Samson Koletkar: The World’s Only Indian Jewish Standup Comedian
Luncheon: Monday, September 30
Samson Koletkar was born in Mumbai and raised Jewish. Growing up in the world’s most crowded city,
he spent most of his childhood years burning the midnight candles for earning a Masters in Computer
Software, thereby fulfilling his parent’s dreams. He then moved half-way across the world, to the technology
headquarters and a hotbed for emerging comics – San Francisco. As a first generation immigrant in
America, Samson brings a refreshingly new approach to cerebral, witty, thought-provoking, clean humor
with a global perspective. Driven by personal trials and tribulations, his subtle satire
addresses religious and political hypocrisies, social issues, and day-to-day absurdities
of human nature.
Banjo Player Extraordinaire Dave Marty
Luncheon: Monday, October 14
Whether entertaining on luxury cruise liners or appearing before convention audiences, California banjo
man extraordinaire Dave Marty’s nickname is “Mr. Smooth.” His virtuosity as a performer and recording
artist spans over a half century. Dave revels in a wide variety of musical forms, from classical to Dixieland
and traditional jazz along with music from the big band era. Dave was inducted into the National FourString Banjo Hall of Fame in 2010.

On Father’s Day my children and I visited my husband in
his final resting place. The cemetery is very old, on a hill, in
Guerneville. I found this poem and read it to him. I know those
of you who have lost a loved one will appreciate this poem.

Location: The Donald and Maureen Green Music Center (1801 E. Cotati Ave. in
Rohnert Park) is located on the campus of Sonoma State University (SSU), at the
intersection of Rohnert Park Expressway and Petaluma Hill Road.
Directions:
•From Petaluma, take U.S. Highway 101 north to the Rohnert Park Expressway
exit. At the end of the exit ramp, turn right onto Rohnert Park Expressway. Drive
2.2 miles to the SSU entrance on your right.

Join Friendship Circle for a Senior Excursion
Berkeley for Art and Lunch
Wednesday, October 2
Lunch at Flavor in the Epicurean Garden of Berkeley
Enjoy a bountiful spread that emphasize the freshness of the Mediterranean with exotic and
exciting spices. The meal will include multiple vegetarian and vegan salad options, a variety of
slowly braised and grilled meats, dessert, tea and coffee.
The executive chef, Ezra Malmuth, is the grandson of Friendship Circle members, Bill and Pat
Thomas. Ezra’s passion for food started at a young age when he would sit and observe his nonna in
her small Italian kitchen. He built his philosophies about seasonality and freshness growing up in
the Bay Area and was an intern at the acclaimed Chez Panisse.
Berkeley Art Museum Guided Tour
Beauty Revealed: Images of Women in Qing Dynasty Chinese Painting investigates a relatively unexamined area
of Chinese art history: Meiren (beautiful women) paintings from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This
exhibition is the first to bring together a broad selection of paintings in this genre, and includes work from public
and private collections in the United States and Europe, as well as from the Berkeley Art Museum and the Pacific
Film Archive. The tour will be led by UC Berkeley graduate students.
The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life Self-Guided Tour
The Museum holdings of The Magnes encompass two main areas: Jewish Art
and Jewish Life. The Jewish Art collection includes painting and sculpture, photography,
works on paper and artist books, as well as digital and mixed media. The Jewish Life
collection includes thousands of objects representing personal and family rituals, synagogue
and communal life, and the social interactions among Jewish and host communities in the
Global Diaspora throughout history.
Tickets are $50 for Friendship Circle members; and $60 for non-members. Cost includes lunch, admission to each museum,
the private tour at the Berkeley Art Museum, transportation, and snacks along the way. If you are not able to climb stairs,
please let us know in advance.
Reservations are limited. Priority is given to Friendship Circle Members and those who have not attended a recent Friendship

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical

Long before she was Carole King, chart-topping music
legend, she was Carol Klein, Brooklyn girl with passion and
chutzpah. She fought her way into the record business as a
teenager and, by the time she reached her twenties, had the
husband of her dreams and a hot career writing hits for the
biggest acts in rock 'n' roll. But it wasn’t until her fairytale life
began to crack that she finally managed to find her true voice.
BEAUTIFUL tells the inspiring true story of King’s rise to stardom, alongside husband and co-writer Gerry Goffin and fellow
song writers Barry Mann, and Cynthia Weil, set to the music that made her one of the recording industry’s most enduring
icons.
Tickets are $65 for Friendship Circle members; and $85 for non-members. Cost includes snacks on the bus, transportation,
and a single ticket to the show. Your ticket will be given to you on the bus. All seats are reserved. The ability to climb stairs is

Join Friendship Circle for a delicious Middle Eastern luncheon at King Falafel, just a two
minute walk from the Rialto Cinemas in Sebastopol. We will begin lunch at 11:00 AM and then
stroll up Brown Street toward the theater where we will have reserved seating for the film Joe
Papp in Five Acts:
Joe Papp, the indomitable street-wise champion of the arts, brought more theater to more
people than any other producer in history in America. He was best known for his productions
of Shakespeare in the Park in New York, and became the spectacularly successful producer
of legendary Broadway shows like Hair and A Chorus Line. Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline,
James Earl Jones, Mandy Patinkin and others bring him to life and comment on how he
changed theirs.
11:00 am Meet for lunch at King Falafel (100 Brown St, Ste. 150 in Sebastopol). Due to high
attendance of this show we recommend that you park at the theater prior to lunch and walk
to the restaurant (100 Brown Street, Sebastopol); however if you need to park nearer to the
restaurant, parking is available along Brown Street. We will walk as a group from King Falafel to Rialto Cinemas, just one

Myrna was born and
raised in Brooklyn, NY to
a mother who was a fashion
illustrator and a father who
was a ladies’ belt salesman in
the Garment District. She was
the envy of all her friends with
her drawers full of belts! After graduating from Lafayette
High School and excelling in business courses, she got a job
with the Dept. of the Army, New York Ordnance District. She
began in the steno pool and shortly worked herself up to being
private secretary to the District’s Comptroller. One of her
talents was being able to take minutes in shorthand at high
echelon meetings that earned her an excellent commendation
letter from the Colonel. Myrna’s next job was with a Japanese
Import House on Wall St. These men were fresh over from
Japan and could barely speak English. What a challenge that
was for her! They were very kind and soon became good
friends. She taught them some English while they taught her
some Japanese.
Myrna’s working career came to an end when she met
and married the man of her dreams and he took her away
from NY to live in Pittsburgh, PA, where he was from. (They
didn’t even know what a bagel was!) They proceeded to raise
three boys, three girls and a multitude of pets. Needless to say,
she was a stay-at-home mom. Besides caring for her family,
Myrna was president of her local ORT (a Jewish education
and vocational training organization) chapter which was the
focus of her social life.
Business and weather took them away from the east and
out west to San Diego. Myrna lived there for 20 years until
her kids decided the weather was too boring there and they all
moved up to Northern California. Myrna joined Friendship Circle shortly after moving to
Santa Rosa and was a member of the Advisory Board almost
from the beginning. She took a hiatus to help manage the
Curves Fitness Center that her daughter and son bought. Now
that she's back with FC, she's happy to be involved. “The
people we work with are outstanding as are all our members.
What a wonderful feeling it is to make people’s lives
happier.” As she thinks back, the program that stands out is
the concert that her son, Cantor Mark Childs, performed for
FC at the Friedman Center a few years ago. Of course, no
prejudice involved here.
