WALK TO END ALZHEIMER’S®
Meet The Walk Staff!
Shelita Weinfield
Director, Walk to End Alzheimer’s

I could not be more proud to represent the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in San Diego.
Over the past two year I have met so many families, team captains and walkers and I
can definitely say our participants are the best in the country. You all are what makes
Walk day one of my favorite days of year!

Marketing & Communication Coordinator

I am so grateful to be part of Walk again this year and to work on an event that truly
brings together families and reminds us all to have hope and have a little fun in the
process! It is amazing to see the impact we have here and across the country. I know
this year we are going to raise more money and awareness than ever before!
Cindy Lee
Operations & Donor Engagement Coordinator

There are unlimited possibilities in how to raise money for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s!
1. Bingo—Get prizes donated and charge an entrance fee
2. Strike Gold—Ask friends and family to donate old jewelry they no longer wear and turn the gold in for cash
3. 50/50 Raffle–Sell raffle tickets and offer half of the proceeds as prizes
4. Sit-a-thon–Offer baby/house/pet sitting services in return for donations
5. Make the Grade–Have students get pledges for “A’s” and “B’s” at the beginning of a quarter and collect the donations after

7. Birthday/Anniversary/Graduation Pledge–Ask for donations to your Walk team in lieu of gifts
8. Pump it Up–Coordinate with a gas station to have volunteers serve as attendants who pump gas and clean windshields for
donations
9. Forget-me-knots–Different than our paper “forget-me-nots”; tie a purple ribbon on your potential donors’ fingers and ask them
not to remove it until they’ve made a donation. A great way to turn those “I promise I’ll donate” sentiments into action!
10. Delegate–Give 10 friends 10 donation forms and ask them to get donations for you
11. National Holidays–Don’t forget about Memorial Day, Fourth of July, or Labor Day and all those picnics! Remember to bring
your donation forms and canisters!

Team Captain Checklist & Review
RECRUITMENT
†† Brainstorm a list of potential teammates. Think about the people you see every day. You may be surprised at
how many of them have been affected by Alzheimer’s and will want to walk.
†† Invite friends and family to register by sending an email through your Participant Center. Tweet about your
team or update your Facebook status with a link to registration. Or, reach out via a handwritten letter. Make
your request personal by sharing why you are walking.
†† Recruit coworkers. Visit your Participant Center to access some of the ideas we have for you to use in the
workplace.
†† Ensure all team members are registered and have personalized their fundraising page. A personalized page
is a great way to tell your story.
FUNDRAISING
†† Make a personal donation. Be the first to show your commitment to the cause! We’ve found that those
who make a personal donation raise more on average than those who do not.
†† Organize a dinner, coffee break or happy hour to discuss your fundraising goals. Brainstorm different ways
to reach them using your team’s collective creativity.
†† Ask for donations from community organizations, local corporations and businesses that you frequent,
such as your dry cleaner, hair salon or sandwich shop. There are a variety of people you support on a daily
basis and they will be happy to return the favor.
†† Many corporations offer a matching gift policy to employees who raise money for charity. Ask your human
resources department!
MOTIVATION
†† Stay in touch with your team in the weeks leading up to Walk with regular emails and updates on
fundraising progress. Be ready to offer help and solutions to team members who have a hard time asking
for donations. Send motivational videos or stories that you come across online to keep them inspired.
†† Take a vow to make your team a fundraising success. Work with every member to ensure that they make
a contribution to the cause.
†† Remember, NOW IS THE TIME TO END ALZHEIMER’S!!!
WALK DAY INFORMATION
We want your Walk day experience to be better than ever, so this year we have expanded our Walk
day festivities and extended our festival hours. Be sure to join us before and after Walk for special
Walk day activities, entertainment, food and refreshments.
New Extended Festival Hours:
• Oceanside Pier: 2:00pm - 6:00pm
• Balboa Park: 6:30am - 12:00pm
Walk Day Activities
• Team Signs - Show your team pride by creating a team sign to carry with you during the Walk. Make
your sign at home as a team bonding activity or arrive early on Walk Day and make one with us at our
Team Sign table. We will provide all the materials, just be sure to arrive early and bring your
creativity!
• Memory Buttons - Many of you walk in memory of a loved one who has passed away or who is still
battling. Stop by the Memory Button table on Walk day with your favorite picture and make a
personalized button to wear in honor of them!
• T-shirt/Flower Decoration - Everyone has a reason to end Alzheimer’s. Be sure to stop by the
T-shirt/Flower decorating table to write your reason.
