Oblate School of Theology An Ecumenical Gathering of Pilgrims on
People of Pilgrimage: Ubuntu -- Practicing Compassion Oblate School of Theology Fifth Annual Contemplative Retreat Ubuntu: Practicing Compassion “Ubuntu” invites us to deepen our awareness of what it means to be human. Ubuntu teaches us that we are different so that we can know our need of one another, for no one is ultimately selfsufficient. Drawing on the wisdom and practice of Christian spirituality as illuminated by this African concept of being interrelated, this retreat invites us all to better practice compassion for the sake of being human. Archbishop Desmond Tutu helps explain as he states, “God has set in motion a centripetal process, a moving toward the center . . . thrown out to clasp all, everyone and everything, in a cosmic embrace, so that all, everyone and everything, belongs.” Ubuntu invites such compassion. Our task in retreat is to receive it. Two Tracks Choose either: 1) A three-evening lecture series with the Very Rev. Michael Battle or 2) A four day contemplative retreat with the Very Rev. Michael Battle, including time for silence Michael Battle served as Assistant Professor of Spirituality and Black Church Studies at Duke University and Rector of St. Ambrose Episcopal Church in Raleigh, North Carolina before moving to Virginia Theological Seminary as Academic Dean. From there Battle served as Provost of the Cathedral Center in the Diocese of Los Angeles, Rector of Church of Our Saviour in San Gabriel, California and Canon Theologian for the Diocese of Los Angeles. Chaplain to both the Episcopal House of Bishops and the 2008 Lambeth Conference, Battle was also Vice Chairman of the Board of the Gandhi Institute run by Mahatma Gandhi's grandson, Arun Gandhi. Among Battle's prestigious awards is his becoming the first American to receive the "Six Preacher Award" by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams. Currently, Battle resides in Raleigh, North Carolina with his wife and three children. He has founded the PeaceBattle Institute focusing upon peacemaking, transformation and spirituality. Much of Battle's life has been shaped by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who ordained him and with whom Battle lived in South Africa for two years.
