Director's Article from Wingin’ It
submitted by: Ray & Sandi Garris, Directors-GWRRA
This pin started it all!! 40 to Phoenix"
Five years ago, Greg McKinney and a few friends from Arkansas decided that they wanted a Visitors
Pin from the Home Office. They shared that thought with a few more people and decided that they could
even take the historic "Route 66" (now known as Interstate 40) thus..."40 To Phoenix" was born. This
ride has now become the largest Coast to Coast ride in the history of GWRRA.
On Thursday, March 13, 2014 about 88 "40 To Phoenix" riders arrived at the Home Office and were
welcomed by another 130 GWRRA Members and Home Office Staff. This all started a great day filled
with FUN, escorted tours locally, great conversation, camaraderie, a lot of "tire kicking, and pictures of
our "extended family" having FUN. The highlight of the day was for many of our Members, a tour of the
Home Office and a shiny silver pin for their vest that proudly states " I visited The Home Office."
This was truly a very unique event. Here is another example of what can happen when a group of
"Wingers" get together and rally around a FUN idea. As we watch this event grow each year with new
riders, it clearly shows us that when our Members are having FUN, "The Sky is the Limit!" If having
FUN is the main ingredient in the recipe for a great event, then our job as Officers at any level is to be
sure to follow that recipe when we plan any and all of our conventions, gatherings, events, rides or staff
meetings.
A very special thanks go to the following folks: Russ Schaeffer, (organizer & leader of the ride) Abel
Gallardo, Ed Price, Melissa Eason and all the great crew at the Home Office and most of all, ALL THE
RIDERS AND GWRRA MEMBERS WHO CAME OUT AND SUPPORTED THIS EVENT. We really
enjoyed this incredible day and can't hardly wait for next year's ride.
A Big Thank You to all who helped make it all happen!

How Old is Your Helmet?
Excerpt from Dan & Linda Sue Davis’ Newsletter Articles
How old is your helmet? Has it had its fifth birthday? If it has than it is time to
retire it and send it off to helmet retirement land! Your helmet’s interior parts will
begin deteriorating from the date of manufacture. As they are exposed to the
elements they grow weaker and weaker. It has be determined through testing that
at the five year mark the helmet is no longer providing the protection that is Dan & Linda Sue Davis
IL District
needed for your safety. Remember when you go shopping for your new helmet to
Rider
Educators
check to manufactured date. This can be found inside the helmet under the helmet
lining. Be cautious when buying discounted helmets, they are sometime close to
the end of their life span.
State Police Demonstration & Summit
What did everyone think of Officer Christopher “Joey” Watson from the Illinois State Police? What a
great guy to get to know and his knowledge of motorcycles and ways and means of controlling them, just
outstanding.
I have had several members ask if Joey is going to be coming back to speak again. Right now I can tell
you that he will be at the Summer Rally in Mount Vernon with his motorcycle. He and I have discussed a
parking lot demonstration to begin with and maybe I can convince him to give his summit briefing again.
If you would be interested in attending the Summit briefing, let your chapter educator know so they can
pass it on to me.
Officer Joey Watson, THANK YOU for a great presentation.

Motorist Awareness Division 2014 Annual Fun Ride
Written by Dale and Donna Andrews, IL District MAD Coordinators
[email protected]
Dale and Donna
Andrews
Illinois District MAD
Coordinators
As in the past, the MAD Poker Ride is returning with a few changes this year. Due to
state legislation changes, we will now be known as the MAD ANNUAL FUN RIDE.
This year the theme is local mom and pop ICE CREAM ESTABLISHMENTS, after all
who doesn’t like ending their motorcycle ride with a turtle sundae or banana spit.
The ride starts whenever this blistery cold, endless snowfall winter season quits and
ends on October 31, 2014. Five (5) ice cream establishments visited will be a hand. Each
hand will cost $5.00. The hands should be drawn at the November Chapter Meetings
and sent in by December 15, 2014.
After the December 15th cutoff date, each card in a standard deck of 52 playing cards
will be given a number value drawn at random. The total of these points will be given to
each hand and the three highest totals will be declared the Individual Award winners.
There will be a Chapter Award presented to the Chapter that visits the most Ice Cream
Establishments. Pictures are required for the individual and chapter awards with
you and/or your group at the Ice Cream Establishments. (Your bike/trike does not
have to be in the picture.) Multiple pictures can be on one sheet. To qualify for the
chapter award the Visit Sheet must be submitted, (these visits must also be in a chapter
member’s Individual’s hand.
So, we encourage all Goldwing members to participate in this fun ride this year and
enjoy our local ice cream stops. Make it a Saturday Chapter ride or end your individual
rides at one of the ice cream shops on the list.

The Illinois District is once again holding the Dash4Cash participation event. In
2013, IL Chapter Q came in second. If we work a little harder, we might just
come in first in 2014. Rules were in the February newsletter. In the rules you
will see how we can earn points throughout the year. Below are a few pictures of
Dash4Cash entries that have already been submitted.
If you are interested in going to an event, another chapter gathering or seminars,
call a friend and ask them along. Take a picture (need at least 4 from the chapter
and the person responsible for the event, usually the chapter director or other
officer). Submit the picture to Nancy Mallett via email at [email protected]

Chapter Director’s Corner
Warmest Greetings from Chapter “Q” Directors, Jim & Helen Rusher
We are in the month of April and many of us have or are preparing to ride our
preferred motorcycles, trikes or scooters once again weather providing.
With all the rain resulting in flood waters and many road closures. I am beginning
to wonder if Harrison’s Sport Shop could possibly convert our Goldwing into an
amphibian so we could at least get out and go.
Great News! Our Illinois Assistant Director and Chapter “Q” participant Steve
Gottschalk, has successfully gone through his open heart surgery at Columbia, MO.
This event has been a stressful time, and the family has extended a great big thank
you for the caring and concerns that have came from all of the people who know
Steve and the entire Gottschalk family. All of us look forward to Steve’s speedy
recovery and return to his home and to Chapter “Q”.
Congratulations to the First Quarter winners of the “Mileage Challenge” which is
designed to promote riding and fun for the retired person, working person and
female riders.
The following named riders are the winners for the first quarter “Mileage
Challenge”
* Charlie Rodriguez…..Retired person with 591 miles.
* Willie Kohlenberger...Working person with 196 miles.
*Rose Basden................Female riding person with 6 miles.
The above named winners had a tough time dealing with the cold winter weather
to accumulate their miles. Hopefully, the second quarter “Mileage Challenge” will
have much better weather conditions and draw additional qualified riders into the
respective categories to increase the fun and family atmosphere which is what
GWRRA is all about.
Don’t forget, there are many upcoming fun events on the calendar this year that
you will want to attend and will want to pre-register for.
Some of these events are the Illinois District Rally in Mt. Vernon, IL, the Region
“E” Rally in Wisconsin Rapids, WI, “Wing-Ding 36” in Madison, WI and the
Southern Illinois Ride-In at DuQuoin, IL.
Helen and I want to encourage you to do your part in helping Chapter “Q” to be
the No.1 Chapter in the Illinois District for 2014. Together, we can do it! Be a
participant, attend seminars, visit other Chapters. All these things count toward
Chapter “Q” being No.1 Chapter in the Illinois District.
Ride safe and have fun,
Jim & Helen Rusher, Chapter “Q” Directors
Sonny & Lisa Gales attended the March 29th Nunnery
Ride to Arcadia, MO. 14 bikes from MO Chapter I, 2
from IL Chapter Q, 1 bike from MO Chapter W2, 9
bikes from MO Chapter Z and 2 cars. It was in the high
40’s when we left home, and it was in the low 40’s on
the way back home. Food was excellent at The Abbey!

Chapter Q Monthly Get Together Summary
Chapter Director, Jim Rusher, welcomed the 57 participants to our gathering.
Charlie Basden, Assistant Chapter Director awarded the first quarter’s high
mileage awards. Carlene Kohlenberger talked about some upcoming events
including going to a play at SIUC in July, a scenic ride May 3rd and Ariel Gales
coming home on leave and going to dinner in Sparta to visit with her on May 4th.
Since there was a tie and some additional suggestions, 3 designs for the 30th
anniversary t-shirts were available for us all to view and make a choice as to
which we liked the best. Results will be available next month. Sandy Schlager
reminded everyone of Education Day this coming Saturday at their house. Kathy
Howell reminded us of the upcoming Windshield Wash on May 10th at the rest
area on the southbound side at Rend Lake. We will have breakfast at the Cozy
Table in Benton first and after the event we are invited to the Rushers for a bbq
lunch/potluck. Wear Yellow Start Seeing Motorcycle Shirts or Red Chapter
Shirts. No vests or belt buckles that could scratch a vehicle. Bring lawn chair if
you can, squeegies, rags, and/or paper towels. She discussed the Annual MAD
Fun Run of Mom & Pop Ice Cream Shops. Jean Potwora invited us to IL Chapter
O’s 15th Anniversary Party in Woodriver on June 22nd. Marlene Cloude told us
that Roger will be going to Jeff City, MO on the 27th of April to receive his
honorary award. She also thanked everyone for their love and support the last 3
months and onward as Roger continues his treatments. Jim Rusher updated us on
his son’s condition as he is doing quite well. We were happy to see Ron & Mary
Crank with us. Ron indicated that they are treating him with some new
medication, and they are taking one day at a time.

Two of our young men are back on US soil. We thank

like to invite anyone from Chapter Q that would care to join us. We
are considering reserving a group area whereby we would have the

How Are You Starting This Riding Season?
Article written by Bruce & Melissa Thayer, Former MI Assistant District Rider
Educators - Submitted by Willie Kohlenberger, Chapter Q Rider Educator
Winter is finally gone, so let the riding season begin! Maybe you have recently taken
a CPR/First Aid class or a seminar or two during this past off-season. This means you
are better prepared to help in case one of your riding buddies has an accident or a health
issue, or you are prepared to be a better co-rider. Now you are available to spend more
time riding now that the season is here. Hopefully you have also taken time to make
sure your motorcycle is ready to go, too. You may have done a T-CLOCS, or changed
the oil, replaced worn tires, kept your battery charged or discovered that you needed a
new one and replaced it.
Carlene & Willie
There are other things that you can do to be at your best out on the road, too. Many of
Kohlenberger
us
will be out on the road before MSF or GWRRA Rider Courses are offered. So what
Chapter Q
else
can you do to get in the right frame of mind and tune up your skills right away?
Rider Educators
There are a few things you can do as an individual or in a group (such as with your fellow
chapter members) to be prepared to ride safely and with skill before the season is even two weeks old.
First, you can practice your skills in an empty, quiet parking lot with smooth pavement that is free of loose
gravel or sand. Find an empty church or a school parking lot, or some unused out-of-the-way space at a shopping
center safely away from moving vehicles. Choose a time when it is unlikely to be busy, (e.g., a school lot on
Sunday) as your safety is of the utmost importance. Work on braking, turning, curves, stopping while in a curve
(remember to straighten the handlebars before braking!), and turning when pulling away from a stop. When you
practice alone, always remain vigilant to vehicles encroaching our your space.
Second, how about participating in a Parking Lot Practice? Also referred to as a PLP, this is an activity that
many Chapters hold at the chapter level. The exercises in a PLP are all spelled out in the Cornering Practice
Guide along with tips to execute the skills correctly. Talk to your Chapter Educator about holding a Parking Lot
Practice for your chapter, or if there is a Facilitated Parking Lot Practice scheduled near you.
Third, you can attend a Team Riding Seminar. This Rider Ed seminar is available for presentation at your
chapter, and may be available at some District rallies. This seminar is particularly good to hold at your chapter
because the folks who are normally part of your riding team can all hear the same Team Riding tips. Why would
you sit through a Team Riding Seminar? One reason is because most of us ride to various places around the state
with our riding friends. And if you know what to expect from the others in your group - your team - you will
be more likely to trust them. You will trust them because you’ll know they are all going to ride safely and
predictable in a staggered formation. That is when the Team Riding Seminar provides you.
Getting back to the bike for a minute, if you have new tires on your bike for the new season, know that the tire
manufacturers recommend that you take it easy on those tires for the first 50-100 miles. That means go easy in
the curves and easy on acceleration to prevent slide-outs. The reason is because the surface of the tire will be
slickest (slippery) when new. There are a couple of common explanations why, but the result is the same reduced traction. The rubber will get scuffed and roughed up enough over that distance during normal riding and
the tire’s grip will improve. Be particularly careful with new tires on painted stripes and metal plates, and all
surfaces that are slick even when your tires aren’t.
Remember that practice in a parking lot, by yourself or with others, is good for all of us after the long offseason. It is even more beneficial and important if you recently bought a new or used motorcycle. Get to know
that new-to-you bike and how it handles in a safe environment. After brushing up your skills, you’ll be ready to
go out and enjoy a safe riding season!

Opportunities to Practice Your Riding Skills
Nothing could be worse than someone thinking they know it all and don’t need to practice or brush up on their skills.
Everyone can learn something new or correct a bad habit they have picked up over the year(s). Do you pull a
trailer? There is a course being offered that addresses the different issues that can come up while pulling a trailer.
Ride a trike? There are some trike courses also that help you become more skilled while on 3 wheels. Below are
various opportunities for motorcycle drivers to take a class and help
yourself become a better and more confident
driver. Practice, practice, practice!!!

Excerpts from Various Newsletters
Participate-Participate-Participate
Written by Roy & Virginia Staeger, MO Chapter B Assistant Directors & 2014 Chapter Couple of the
Year
One thing we have confirmed is that the more we participate and get involved the more we get out of
the organization and enjoy ourselves more. We would encourage everyone to get more involved in the
operation of Chapter B and lend your experience for us all. We would encourage you to get involved and
compete for Chapter Couple of the Year or Individual of the Year. We have found that we are receiving
more back than we imagined possible.
We want to mention some things about the Couple of the Year Program. The Couple of the Year
Program has two purposes:
 First and foremost, the program provides an opportunity for local chapters to recognize and honor a
couple each year for their dedication, accomplishments and participation within the chapter.
 Secondly, it establishes a process for identifying outstanding couples who can serve their Districts,
Regions, and ultimately the International GWRRA organization as ambassadors and spokespersons.
Being selected a Couple of the Year is an Honor and a Responsibility. Our thanks, to you, for allowing us
to represent Chapter B.
Random Thoughts from the Chapter Director
Written by George White, MO Chapter I Director
Since we just had a Seminar on Team Riding, I thought this was appropriate.
A GOOD TEAM MEMBER. . .
1. Assumes a responsibility to ride with and work with the other team
members for the safety and protection of the whole team while on the road,
and especially, while in traffic.
2. Maintains steady speed and spacing. Yo-Yoing, or straggling behind, disrupts the rhythm and efforts of
the other team members, and reduces the benefits of riding as a team.
3. Stays alert and announces to the other team members any obstacle, condition, or potential situation
which could become hazardous to the team or a team member.
4. Will be aware of the other team members and maintain the formation (staggered) and a safe riding
distance (spacing) between team members. Spacing will be determined by the road, weather conditions,
and visibility. “HOLES” left in the formation (large spacing gaps between team members) invites
aggressive motorists driving at faster speeds to cut into the formation, which may result in tailgating our
teammate ahead of us. This creates a very dangerous situation. Each team member must protect the other
by maintaining the appropriate spacing.
REMEMBER: Pace yourself 1-second stagger, and 2-seconds following distance behind the bike directly
in front of you. However, during darkness or inclement weather, a 2-second stagger and a 4-second
following distance should be maintained to provide an extra margin of safety.
