STEPHEN With great pride, I share with you the 2014-15 Annual Report detailing the tremendous achievements of Hollywood Schoolhouse this past year. It is appropriate that we move into our 70th anniversary school year -- a year that will be filled with celebration, reflection, and forward thinking -immediately following a year in which our community saw remarkable growth. A few things in particular come to mind. First, we were notified by the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) that Hollywood Schoolhouse has been granted a further seven years of accreditation – the maximum possible. This is a dual accreditation with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC.) I would like to thank and commend all of the faculty, staff, parents, trustees, and devoted community members who were a part of this intensive process. This accreditation is a significant accomplishment, and validates the important work we are doing as a community in the lives of our students. Next, we celebrated a second consecutive year of 100% participation by Schoolhouse parents, faculty, staff, and trustees in the annual Schoolhouse Fund. While tuition and fees are crucial to our ability to carry out our mission, it is the Schoolhouse Fund that allows us to go above and beyond in creating a truly unique experience for our students. This level of participation reflects what many of us already know to be true, that ours is a community of exceptionally dedicated individuals -a community in which we should all take great pride. Lastly, this past June we broke ground and began construction of McCadden South. When finished, this two-story, four-classroom building will allow us to relocate the Junior Kindergarten into Founders’ Hall and demolish the aging Junior Kindergarten building, which will more than double the outdoor play space on the North McCadden Yard. This marks the third phase of our Building Excellence Capital Campaign, which is the first our community has undertaken since our founding in 1945. I hope you share my sentiment in recognizing the enormous progress our school has made these past few years. As we plan for the future, moving into our 70th year, it is important that we all remain committed to the core beliefs and principles upon which the school was founded and which give it its unique character. The Schoolhouse will always provide an environment that stirs the imagination of children and affords an opportunity for creativity and risk taking to promote excellence in learning. We will continue to be an environment that includes time for creative play, quiet thought, and serious reflection -- all stirred by the enthusiasm of competent teachers. With gratitude, Stephen Bloodworth Head of School 5 BOARD OF TRUSTEES 2 0 1 4 - 2 0 1 5 Chip Sellers Chair Christine Fitzgerald Vice Chair David DeSalvo Treasurer Matthew Greenfield Secretary Debbie Banner Darren Blumenthal Jose-Manuel de Castro Alisa Evans Karen Grace-Baker Jason George Todd Gertschen Stacey Koff Neal Roden Jon Tostrud Melissa Wilcox Lisa Vebber Mpambo Wina Shaw 6 7 OUR PROGRAM CLASSROOM TEACHERS/ ASSISTANTS: ECE Assistant - Pandas: Kindergarten : Ms.Barbra Taupier Ms. Carrie Buckner ECE Teacher - Busy Bears: ECE Teacher - Penguins: Kindergarten Assistant: 3rd/4th/5th/6th Science: Ms. Karla Martinez Mr. Dean Holbrook Grade 1: 5th/6th Math/Language Arts: Ms. Sandra Medrano Ms. Holly Van Hoy Ms. Lucile Herrera ECE Assistant - Busy Bears: ECE Assistant - Penguins: Ms. Rebekah Lasarow ECE Teacher - Lions: Ms. Vannessa Gonzalez ECE Assistant - Lions: Ms. Adalee Reise ECE Teacher - Busy Bees: Ms. Juana Lovo ECE Assistant: - Busy Bees: Mr. Sal Figueroa ECE Teacher - Caterpillars: Ms. Mayra Campos ECE Assistant - Caterpillars: Ms. Laura Rodriguez ECE Teacher - Pandas: Ms. Jordann Piegalski Ms. Lauren McCaffrey Ms. Allyssa Golec Grade 1: Grade 4: Mr. Todd Palmer 5th/6th Language Arts/History: Ms. Stacy Veith Ms. Abigail Hamilton-Buckley Grade 1 Assistant: 5th/6th Math,History,Spanish: Ms. Nicole Costales Mr. Narbe Mansourian Ms. Ryan Becker Grade 2: Elementary Spanish: Ms. Jessica Godwin Ms. Janet Layton Arribas ECE Teacher - Dolphins: Grade 2: Lower Elementary Art: ECE Teacher - Sea Turtles: Ms. Renee Voelker ECE Assistant - Sea Turtles: Ms. Ericka Franklin Ms. Karen Medak Grade 2 Assistant: ECE Assistant - Dolphins: Ms. Carmen Herrera Mr. Nick Gonzales Grade 3: Performance Teacher: Grade 3: Ms. Cricket Alexander Kindergarten Assistant: Mr. Brian Jones 8 Upper Elementary Art: Mr. Robert Herbst Ms. Francesca Liuzzi Kindergarten: Ms. Vianne Lara Ms. Terrie Benton Performance Teacher: Ms. Lesley Hyde Ms. Alena Bernardi Grade 4: Ms. Cristina Tejeda-Holbrook Ms. Pamela Greene Library/Computers: Photography/Yearbook/ Social Media/Design: Ms. Lisa Smith SUPPORT STAFF: Director of Learning Center: Ceci James Coordinator of Student Support Services: Kaye Ragland Office Assistant: Cristina Barba Receptionist: At Hollywood Schoolhouse, we believe education is a joint venture among students, parents, and teachers. The Executive Board is the heart and soul of that group. These are the parents who meticulously craft a calendar of events each year, and work hard to make sure that each is a tremendous success. They enrich our program by welcoming new families, and by acting as daily ambassadors to fellow parents and models of volunteerism for our children. We are so grateful for their time, their energy, their love, and their constant support of Hollywood Schoolhouse. Our Parent Association also plays a vital role in our community’s fundraising efforts. In addition to raising $100,000 for Financial Aid each year, excess funds are designated to various programs of choice. Currently, funds are being allocated to the Building Excellence Capital Campaign, and the construction of McCadden South. 11 FINANCIALS 2014-15 Operating Fund Summary 12 13 BUILDING EXCELLENCE Like all independent schools, Hollywood Schoolhouse depends on the generosity of our community to sustain and advance our mission, program, and facilities. To meet our strategic goals, we are currently in the process of modifying our existing campus footprint to be enhanced and reconfigured. In April 2013, we launched a capital campaign, Building Excellence: A Schoolhouse For Our Future, to provide a myriad of campus improvements, including: Larger Classrooms, Better Designed for Learning Expanded Outdoor Space for Play and Learning Updated Academic Technology Infrastructure Unified Campus Flow Multipurpose Performance and Meeting Space Rendering depicts future facade of McCadden South Once the Junior Kindergarten is demolished, the North McCadden playground will more than double in size. As we envision our future, we remain steadfastly committed to our mission to nurture the whole child within a diverse community, combining challenging academics with creative learning, where each child is known, encouraged, and valued. Our plan has been segmented into distinct phases, which means that students will never be displaced off campus, and there will be minimal disruption to our program. Each phase has been devised so that we can move seamlessly from one to the next, but are able to pause at any point. With our deepest gratitude, we acknowledge all of our capital campaign donors to date. 14 & Amy Tostrud Bell Ringer Jon Student ($100,000 +) Matthew Greenfield & Anna Ter Veer & Laurence Dumortier John Vazquez Renee & Justin Herz Brett Thomas & Anonymous Brenda & Vinny Hodges Russell Honican Sam & Jennifer Hollander Valerie & Michael Thrasher HSH Class of 2014 Ellen & Piotr Uzarowicz HSH Class of 2015 Melissa & David Wilcox Naudain Ives Sellers Keith & Dionne Williams Moira Kirland Lee Winkelman & Sage Machado & Wendey Stanzler Darren Lee Yuko & Cameron Wood Lara Merriken & John & Rebecca Yona (Up to $9,999) HSH Parent Association The Wehbe Family Trust Anonymous Aminah Abdul-Jabbaar Philip & Knight Kearran Ambrosino ($50,000 - $99,999) Jose & Heidi Arroyo Dean & Kirsten Gavoni Brett Benner & Chip Sellers HSH Class of 2016 Travis & Leanne Anderson Norberto Barba & Regina Osorio Barba Stephen Bloodworth & Teacher Darren & ($25,000 - $49,999) Jennifer Brandt & The Banner/Rose Families Dan Edelman & Ivan Ontiveros Todd Gertschen & Vincent Klaseus HSH Class of 2013 Billy Luther & Fenton Bailey Jason George & Vandana Khanna Roy & Seo-Hee Lee Suzanne Steinke & Dixon Slingerland Doug Sturnick & Dennis Anderson Noreen Halpern The Nay/Jarvis Family Al Pacino Gail Lerner Gia Paladino-Wise & Jay & Nav Chakravarti Michael Wise Afsaneh Safavi & Michael & William Chessman Margaret Patinelli John & Kat Cordell David & Elizabeth Payne Roxsanna Cruz Larry & Estelle Dougherty Gina Torrecilla Kevin Murphy & Colin Campbell & ($10,000 - $24,999) Jose-Manuel de Castro & Laurent Michel Michael Roey Graduate Stuart & Allen Bell Sonya & Douglas Merrill Michele Bumenthal Brook Dore & Anonymous William Nelson Ramon Calzada Paul & Tami Pflug Oleg Planovoy & Cricket Alexander Natalia Planovaya Victoria & Jessica Feola-Pastore Christopher Quinn Christine & John Fitzgerald Tara Rice Josh & Christine Friedman Martin Sandberg Glenn & Debra Gainor Sharon Seebach & Madeline & Braulio Garcia John Pierce David & Caroline Gaynes Michele & Gregg Simon Brian & Mark Smith & Michelle Giovannoni Simone Young-Smith Joanna Going & Roberta & Stella Walsh Anson Sowby Phil Green & Jeremy & Corey Spiegel Monica Avila-Green 15 SCHOOLHOUSE FUND It is with full hearts that we thank our Schoolhouse Parents, Faculty, Staff, and the Board of Trustees for helping us reach 100% participation in the 2014-15 Schoolhouse Fund. Aside from the highly valued gifts of time and energy, we appreciate financial gifts towards the following: The Schoolhouse Fund is our annual campaign aimed at providing immediate financial support for our mission and program, while strategically planning for our future. Each gift is used in the school year it is given, and allows for community improvements such as access to new and innovative technology for our students, professional development for our faculty, quality and comprehensive arts and athletic programs, safe and secure facilities, and a unique financial aid program. 18 Our Building Excellence Capital Campaign is a part of our long-term strategic plan intended to address a number of priorities that have been identified by the Schoolhouse community and Board. These include creating larger classrooms, expanding exterior space for play, and unifying campus flow. We ask each family to participate in giving to the Schoolhouse at a level that is meaningful to them. Participation – at any level – enhances our sense of community and ensures our school’s success each year, while paving the way for longterm growth. The projects included in this campaign are funded outside of tuition, the Schoolhouse Fund, and the regular operating budget.
