a note from the director
Dear Friends,
It is always good to be home for the holidays. It is my great pleasure to welcome back home Panto at
The Playhouse and our good friends and producing partners the Lythgoe Family!
We initiated our collaboration last year with our tremendously successful production of A Snow
White Christmas. I suspected that there would be a huge audience for this attractive holiday
programming at our theatre. Last year, it was a joy to bring that audience into The Playhouse in such
huge numbers. So for this holiday season, we immediately made plans to have a new show in this
delicious and delightful style on our stage once again.
I am sure that many of you are returning to The Playhouse to see Aladdin and His Winter Wish after
having been introduced to the Panto style last year. Welcome back! And I believe that those of you
who are here experiencing this delightfully entertaining form of theatre for the first time will be
charmed by what you see and hear, and will want to return for next year’s show. In this way, we
hope to build a real holiday tradition of Panto at The Playhouse, which we envision continuing for
many years to come.
My thanks to our wonderful cast, our hugely talented creative team, and our tremendous producing partners for helping to make
holiday magic on our stage. But most of all, my thanks to you. The magic of the genie in our show is powerful and dazzling. But equally
dazzling to me is the magic that all of you create. It is only your being here that makes our work truly come alive. That is powerful magic
indeed....at holiday time and all the time!
Sincerely,
Sheldon Epps
Artistic Director of The Pasadena Playhouse
A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Returning to The Pasadena Playhouse with our new brand new production of Aladdin and His Winter Wish is simply fantastic!
It seems like only yesterday that I took my first steps across The Playhouse stage and was immediately struck by how much I already felt
at home.
Through last year's production of A Snow White Christmas, I got to know the theatre and its teams of
people well. The production and technical teams, the front of house volunteers, the office team, and of
course, the man himself, Sheldon Epps. Everyone was so passionate and supportive about the show and
the team spirit was just the best you could wish for.
Outside the theatre, children are arriving, all with rosy cheeks, wide eyes, and open mouths as they
gaze excitedly at the display of wonderment. Then a sprinkle of fairy dust spins through the air and the
"Magic of Panto" truly begins.
For this year's Christmas season, we bring you the magical tale of Aladdin and His Winter Wish.
Take yourself into our story and watch Aladdin meet the girl of his dreams by chance in the market
square, where their eyes first meet and their two hearts become one.
So dearest audience member, it is your turn now to sit back and start performing. Cheer, boo, laugh,
have fun, and children, please remember to answer Aladdin when he asks you what to do with the
lamp. Shout out "Rub the lamp!" Please do not forget: It is the most important line and it belongs to
you.
Thank you so much to The Pasadena Playhouse for giving us the opportunity to open the door to a place
where families can be together and enjoy the journey.
Thank you to our cast, our musicians, and our production team for.. being just you. Dearest Sheldon, you believed in us and I hope we have
made you proud.
Sincerely,
Bonnie Lythgoe

WHO'S WHO
BEN VEREEN (Genie) His first
love and passion is and always
will be the stage. "The theater
was my first training ground. It
taught me discipline, dedication,
and appreciation of hard work
and values that will stay with me
a lifetime. The stage sharpens the
creative instrument and encourages
you to go deeper inside and try new
things," states Ben. On Broadway,
Ben has appeared in Pippin, Wicked,
and Jesus Christ Superstar, just to
name a few productions. His role
in Pippin garnered him both the
prestigious Tony Award for "Best
Actor in a Musical" and the Drama
Desk Award for "Outstanding
Performance." While performing
worldwide, Ben's acting credits
continue to give us memorable roles
that stand the test of time, such as
the unforgettable "Chicken" George
in "Roots" and Louis Armstrong in
"Louis Armstrong – Chicago Style."
Ben's current TV guest appearances
include "How I Met Your Mother,"
"NCIS," and "Grey's Anatomy."

BRUCE VILANCH (Widow Twankey)
Bruce Vilanch is no stranger to
dressing up like a woman, on stage
at least. He starred as Edna Turnblad
in Hairspray, playing the Pantages
Theatre in Hollywood for two years
and then Broadway for a year. As a
man, and a man with a beard, yet,
he could be found to the left of
Whoopi Goldberg, if that's possible,
on "Hollywood Squares" for half
a dozen years. He's won a bunch
of Emmys, and lost a bunch more,
for his television writing, which
includes 23 Oscar broadcasts. He
is also a songwriter, a comedian
with a one-man show that tours all
over the place, and a print model
for magazines that have XL pages.
Make that XXL. You can find him on
Netflix as the star of a documentary
the Weinsteins made about him
entitled "Get Bruce." And he went
on "Celebrity Fit Club" and lost 21
lbs., but he found them. Happy New
Year! www.wegotbruce.com

WHAT IS A PANTO?
Panto is derived from the British institution, which is a musical
show based on fairy tales. Historical fairy tales include Cinderella,
Snow White, Aladdin, Jack and the Beanstalk, Beauty and
the Beast, Robin Hood, and Mother Goose. Panto scripts are
rewritten every year and include ever-changing music sourced
from Billboard charts so that each production remains current.
Another contemporary Panto tradition is the inclusion of celebrity guest stars.
Past Panto stars include Stephen Fry, Sir Ian McKellan (pictured at right), Eartha
Kitt, Henry Winkler, George Takei, Joan Collins, Patrick Duffy, Priscilla Presley,
and many more.
The focal point of a Panto, though, is how it brings together the family unit by
way of entertainment. Whether young or old, all members of the family can
enjoy a Panto!
