I am pleased by how hard our eagles are working, learning and striving to be successful every day. So many wonderful things have happened in just a short amount of time. Capital One hosted our 6th grade students at the Redskins Training Camp for the Visa Football Challenge. Our eighth graders participated in the Prejudice Awareness Summit. We have also added an Art class in addition to a Family and Consumer Services Class. These are just a few of the spectacular things happening at Boushall. I welcome all parents to join the PTA and volunteer in the school. Please continue to remind students to complete their assignments and read each afternoon or evening. Encourage them to work hard, do their best and be “Respectful, Responsible and Ready to Learn” so they can focus on learning to their fullest potential. Our teachers are gearing up for a successful second nine weeks. It takes a strong partnership between home and school to elevate student achievement. The next nine weeks is also filled with a number of activities that will showcase our students’ talents. I hope each and every one of our parents will visit Boushall to see firsthand what our students are accomplishing. Widad Abed Check out these new books in the library! Personas exitosas emiten autoestima In the months of October and November, Faith Baker, an intern in the counseling office at Boushall Middle School conducted two girl groups: a 7th grade girls group on the topic of body image and an 8th grade girls group on the topic of transitioning to high school, in which I was a member The 7th grade girls group had discussions about how they viewed their bod- ies and did activities to boost their confidence, so they can love themselves inside and out. In the 8th grade girls group, we participated in different activities from discussing the importance of middle and high school classes in preparation of our chosen career fields to practicing interviewing techniques and etiquette. Miss Baker’s goal in conducting these girl’s groups was to have each girl leave their group with a new founded outlook on school and boost their confidence and self-esteem. My favorite group activity was the job interview where we dressed up and pretended we were being interviewed for a job. I enjoyed being in this group and hope that this experience will help me later on in life with a real job interview. Algunas de las niñas participaron en dos grupos de niñas formadas por la Srta. Baker. La meta de estos All Hispanics are not Mexicans By M. Orichi During the Hispanic Heritage month, students and staff at Boushall of Hispanic descent were invited to write their name under the Hispanic country that indicated his or her place of family origin. The results show that at Boushall Middle School approximately 125 Students and two staff members, consider themselves Hispanic. There are approximately 529 students in our school, making the Hispanic population here about 24%. We have a diverse population of Hispanics; they represent 10 different Spanish speaking countries. Mexico makes up most of our school’s Hispanic population, with 52 students or 42% , followed by: El Salvador (23 Students, 18%), Guatemala (16 Students, 13%), Puerto Rico (12 Students, 13%), Honduras (10 Students, 8%), Dominican Republic (6 T.C. BOUSHALL NEWS Students, 5%), and Spain (2 Students 2%) The smallest number of people with Hispanic Heritage is tied between Costa Rica and Venezuela with one student each. I interviewed Mrs. Passalacqua and she stated that when she first arrived, over twenty years ago, to Boushall, there were almost no Hispanic children at our school. Now, we have a immense group and the population is still growing. The Hispanic population at Boushall will likely continue to grow in the coming years. En nuestra escuela hay 125 alumnus y 2 adultos quienes se identificaron como hispanos., que representa una poblacion hispana en nuestra escuela de 24%. Los paises representados por nuestros alumnus incluyen, Mexico 42%, El Salvador 18%, Guatemala 13%,Puerto Rico 13%, Honduras 8%, República Dominicana 5%, España 2% y un estudiante de Costa Rica y Venezuela FIRST QUARTER 2013-14 PAGE Michele Obama School Nutrition Initiative By Sha’reese Johnson Over the past three decades children are getting more and more overweight. Back then, kids used to go outside, play, and eat more food. Today’s kids are not making better food choices and not going outside as much. Kids today spend most of their time sitting down in front of the TV, getting on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other websites. About 40% of African American and Hispanic children are overweight or obese. If we don’t solve this problem, children are going to have health problems, such as cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, and heart disease. Michele Obama is trying to make our community better and has decided to have a program called Let’s Move; its when kids go outside to play more and not spend as much time on the internet. She also made major changes in the foods that can be served in the school cafeterias. The milk that they are serving in our cafeteria doesn’t taste like it did before. That’s because the milk must be skim or one percent fat instead of two percent or whole milk. No more white bread, now it has to be whole wheat. They also have to serve more fruits and vegetables. We asked students at Boushall to do a school lunch satisfaction survey. The survey showed that most of the students were unsatisfied with the taste and variety of our school lunches. Many of the students said the food was tasteless When I interviewed our school cafeteria manager, Mr. Adams, he said the menus are not made at Boushall, but at Richmond Public Schools and they must follow the initiative food guidelines. Many students, including myself feel that for this initiative to work for us, we are going to need a larger variety of tastier food. (AP photo/Rogelio V. (Prejudice Awareness Team) is a group of 8th grade students who were selected by their teachers and administrators to serve Boushall in eradicating factors that lead to prejudice. This year’s team chose the topic of cyber-bullying! Here is their symbol that tells everyone that cyberbullying is NOT cool! >:( El grupo P.A.S. es un grupo de estudiantes de 8vo grado seleccionado para ayudar a eliminar el perjuicio. Didn’t want a battle Yet you declared war Each knock you gave made me even stronger than before, I will not give up, I will not give in; you won’t make me fall, I will not let you win.
