VOLUME 82, NUMBER 8
MARCH 2004
Governor Jim North
Greetings, Fellow Lions and Leos!
Our membership drive should be in full swing by the time you read this article. Let’s keep up a big push
to bring in additional quality members into our Lions family. Through January, 2004, our District has
experienced a 2% growth in membership since the beginning of the 2003-2005 Lion’s year. Only one
other district in MD-4, District 4N, can boast about a positive membership growth rate currently. I am
very proud of all of the clubs in District 4-L4 that are working so hard to bring in new members,
including the Laguna Niguel Lions Club where I recently inducted four (4) new members. Keep up
these outstanding efforts!
I am also very proud of the Lion sponsors that have been instrumental in making this happen.
Unfortunately, because of the computer problems with the new membership reporting system at LCI,
the recognition of sponsors under the Year-Round Growth program has been delayed for the last two
quarters of 2002-2003 as well as the first two quarters of 2003-2004. Please continue to be patient with
us while this problem gets fixed. Hopefully, the log jam will break by the time of the 4th Cabinet
Meeting.
We had an outstanding turn-out of some 170 Lions for the annual District 4-L4 Melvin Jones Birthday
Celebration and Dinner that was held on Friday, January 23, 2004. The evening was hosted by IPDG
Chuck Overbey of the La Habra Host Lions Club and our keynote speaker was IPP Kay K.
Fukushima, who gave an excellent presentation regarding LCIF programs and plans. Thirty (30) Lions
received Melvin Jones fellowships or progressive diamonds, including your governor, who was the
proud recipient of his first progressive diamond. Thank you, IPDG Chuck for a job well done!
Doris and I were guests of the Buena Park Noon Lions Club at their recent Silverado Days awards
luncheon, where recognitions to event participants and cash awards to charitable causes were presented.
Our District’s Adopt-A-Family program for the wildfire disaster victims received an award, which was
accepted by PDG Ellen Liebherr of the Seal Beach Host Lions Club. For good measure, I inducted a
new member into the Buena Park Noon Lions Club during the ceremonies.
As part of our travels this month, Doris and I attended the Council of Governors meeting and MD-4
Convention at Primm, NV on February 5-8, 2004. During the convention, I proudly accepted, in
absentia, a President’s award medal for PDG Ellen Liebherr and a Leadership award medal for RC
John Doogan. The delegates approved the two (2) proposed amendments to the MD-4 constitutional
and the nine (9) proposed amendments to the Bylaws. The delegates also selected Fresno, CA as the site
for the 2007 MD-4 Convention.
In addition, we just returned from an enjoyable visitation to District 4-C5, where we were the guests of
District Governor Sue Still for the weekend of February 13th. We attended a dress-up dinner dance fund
raiser on Friday night and then, the 3rd Cabinet Meeting on Sunday, which included a pancake breakfast
sponsored by one VDG candidate, a number of informative training sessions, a generous lasagna
luncheon, an ice cream social sponsored by the other VDG candidate, and well-run business session that
had us out the door by 3:00 PM.
I’ll see you here again next month and remember to “Set Your Compass for Service” and let’s all work
on attracting new members to our outstanding Association. Please remember that the “100/100/$100”
district membership recruitment contest began on January 1st
and runs through April 9th. Let’s meet or beat this goal!
VICE DISTRICT
GOVERNOR’S REMARKS
Vice District Governor
Barbara Hayward
Nine months … time enough
to create a new life! It’s been
that long since we’ve been
“Setting our Compasses for
Service” and I know that
you’ve all accomplished some
wonderful things in your
communities.
It’s hard to
believe that this year is going
so quickly.
The course I’ve been on is one of training, training, and some
more training. Last month I told you about the Lions
Leadership Institute and I would still highly recommend that
you put in on the agenda for next year. It’s a great opportunity
to give our future leaders some wonderful tools to work with.
I know that Governor Jim is reporting on the Multiple District
Four Convention we just came back from in Primm, NV. An
awesome experience, for sure. There were great seminars,
some interesting chicken (?), lots of displays and fantastic
speakers and more devious uses of, yep, you’ve got it …
chicken. It should be noted that one of our Past International
President Kajit Habanananda had a starring role with the
featured magician on Saturday night. President KJ was the
“perfect straight man” without any preparation for the
evening’s entertainment. I actually saw Immediate Past
International President Kay Fukushima rolling with laughter.
It couldn’t have been more perfect. Plus, for a change, we had
some beef in our diets! All in all it was a great experience,
just another “must do” for next year, and it will be in San
Diego, right in our own back yard.

We’re in the home stretch for our “100-100-$100+
Membership Contest.” I hope you’re out there actively
pursuing the goal of being “The One” who garners the title of
winner. Remember what it’s all about … One Hundred Days
– One Hundred Members – One Hundred Dollars (cash) and
your District and MD-4 dues paid for one year. I think if we
all set our sights to this goal, we can all be winners.
&
One of the easiest ways to help our District grow is to charter
new clubs. Extension is the name of the game. Until June 30th
we have a special incentive, the waiver from International of
the entrance fee for women joining an existing club or
chartering a new club. President Lee’s Women’s Initiative is
alive and well with innovative ways to get women involved in
Lion’s work. Don’t miss the boat by not asking women (or
more of them) into your clubs, they are a valuable resource
that should not be overlooked.
Our District Convention is just around the corner, and PDG
Mike Scheafer and his Convention Committee are busy at
work to make our stay at the Doral an exciting event. Be sure
to sign up early for golf, make your reservations and get in on
the fun.
The candidates for District and Vice District
Governor will host a Candidates reception on Friday and, as
always, is a great lead-in to the activities planned by the
Vice District Governor’s Remarks (Continued)……………
Committee. Don’t miss it, it will be great. I wonder if Lion
Dave Hubbard is still inner tube clad, looking for the beach?

CABINET SECRETARY/TREASURER’S REPORT
We had a long trip to the MD4 Convention in Primm,
Nevada on February 5th. I was really fortunate to have a
laptop that played DVD movies which kept Ellen passive
watching “American President” while we crept along the
interstate. It took us 2 hours to go 17 miles due to a
terrible accident on Highway 15.
Along with Lions from all over California and Nevada,
there were four Past International Presidents and four
Past International Directors attending as well. This is a
great time to mix and mingle with people serving at all
levels of Lions International. There were several booths
set up to promote the many projects we Lions support
within our Multiple District. I really encourage everyone to
attend at least one MD 4 Convention.
It is time to select a slate of officers for your 2004-2005
Lions year. The slate of officers should be read at three
meetings. Voting should be completed by April 15.
Secretaries must fill out the PU-101 form with the elected
officers and mail to Lions Clubs International.
It is also time to consider one of your own for District Lion
of the Year. It should be someone who displays
exceptional leadership as a Lion and has performed
tasks beyond the normal requirements. This could be an
accumulation of accomplishments over a period of time
as well. You will need to write a letter outlining this
persons accomplishments and why your club has
submitted this person’s name. Have your club president
sign and send to Governor Jim by April 1st.
Well Mardi Gras is upon us which marks the start of Lent
which means to you heathens it marks 40 days till Easter
when the Easter Bunny brings all those goodies. Bon
Appetite!
Scribble on!
Saddleback Region
Report
Saddleback Region
Chairman Marj Vallancey
For all of us basketball fans, it’s
time for March Madness. But for
Lions it is time to finish all of our
projects to make this a banner
Lion’s year.
The Saddleback
Clubs have been busy.
The Huntington Beach Host Lions Club helped the District
Hearing & Speech Committee at a gala evening at the
Huntington Beach Playhouse performance of “Stars in Your
Eyes.” They served champagne and hors d’oeuvres to the
theater-goers prior to the performance then ushered guests to
their seats.
The Costa Mesa Orange Coast Club continues their service
projects with 31 service hours between Heritage House and
Centennial Farms. This club is dedicated to their scouting
work and showed 175 service hours in January. These
services are about average for every month. Congratulations!
The Mission Viejo Lions arranged for the District Sight &
Hearing Mobile Unit at five area schools. As a result 7,000
students received vision and hearing testing. A Model United
Nations meeting from schools throughout the LA/OC area was
attended by about 1,000 students. MV Lions provided the
security for this event which totaled 27 service hours.
Congratulations to the Harbor Mesa Lions for the
outstanding Charter Party for the new Costa Mesa High
School Leos Club. Leo Club Advisor Lion Marianne Allen did
an excellent job in running and organizing this meeting and
Governor Jim North officiated in his usual gracious manner.
The Saddleback Region Student Speakers Contest will be held
Monday, March 22 at the Blind Children’s’ Learning Center.
Lion Mike Liebherr is sending out notices with details so be
sure to mark your calendars to support the speaker from your
Zone.
See your there.

Dear Lions of District 4-L4
The San Clemente Host Lions Club by unanimous vote of the
membership would like to place in nomination Lion Jack
Luellen for the office of Vice District Governor in District 4L4 for Lion year 2004-05.
Lion Jack has met and far exceeds all of the qualifications for
the office of Vice District Governor. As an active member of
Lions for ten years Lions Jack has served in many club and
district positions. Most notably on the club level, Lion Jack
served as club President of the Dana Point Lions Club in
2001-2002 and again as President of the San Clemente Host
Lions Club in 2003-2004. On the District Cabinet level, Lion
Jack served as the Zone “C” Saddleback Region Chairman in
2001-02 & 2002-03. As a District Committee member, he
currently serves on the Lions Clubs International Foundation
Committee, and Student Speakers Contest Committee.
Lion Jack joined Lions as a member of the Westport Lions
Club in Washington. He moved to San Juan Capistrano and
became a Charter member of the Dana Point Lions Club in
2000. In 2003 Lion Jack transferred his membership to the
San Clemente Host Lions Club.
Lion Jack is supported by his wife of 37 years Lion Jill, his
three children and five wonderful grandchildren.
Through
his leadership and vision, the San Clemente Host Lions Club
has increased its membership, added service projects and
provided support to the community.
His enthusiasm,
experience and teamwork philosophy will create an
environment of tremendous energy that will energize the
Lions of District 4-L4 to soar to new heights.
The San Clemente Host Lions Club enthusiastically endorses
Lion Jack Luellen as the 2004-2005 Vice District Governor
Candidate.
Sincerely

Seal Beach

Annual
Spring Fest
Celebration
The past month has been a busy one for Hearing &
Speech activities in District 4-L4.
Yet another Theater Gala took place at the Huntington Beach
Playhouse as the romantic musical “Stars in Your Eyes” was
presented January 31 as a benefit to support HASAC projects.
Thanks to Lion Delia Itanen, this event was unusually
successful in two respects - it was attended by an extra 40
people because real-time captioning and assistive listening
devices were offered for the hard of hearing, who were very
appreciative of these services and, of the total attendance, 75%
were not Lions, meaning a good job was done getting our
message out to the community.
Also, we are proud to support the entry of Allana Green in the
Miss Teen Anaheim Pageant. Allana has a severe hearing
loss, wears two hearing aids and leads an active and successful
scholastic and social life. To all Anaheim Lions - Don’t forget
to vote!!
And on February 7 the Huntington Beach Host Club
sponsored the appearance of the District Sight & Hearing
Screening Mobile Unit at a Health Fair held at Ocean View
High School. This event was sponsored by Huntington Beach
Hospital, CHOC, the Orange County Dept. of Education, the
Huntington Beach Community Clinic, Health Net of
California and others. With fine weather and a good turnout
another successful community service project was performed
by District 4-L4 Lions.

States. This tournament allows
the best High School teams in
Southern California to compete and show some of the greatest
High School baseball action in the United States!
This is a Registered California Interscholastic Federation
Tournament, as a mater of fact the C.I.F. considers this to be
one of the best and well run athletic events held in the state of
California! The C.I.F gives much credit for this excellent event
to the Lions. Rob Wigod, assistant commissioner and director
of all C.I.F. baseball events says “ The Lions have done our
state a great service, the Easter Baseball Tournament is one of
the must important athletic events of our School year.”
Starting in 1975 with 8 teams, increasing to 16 teams in 1987,
this year there are 24 top notch Varsity High School Baseball
ball teams, ready to provide the most competitive and exciting
baseball play in Southern California!
The Anaheim Union High School District co-operates the
Easter Baseball tournament. The competition starts April the
10th and runs April 12th, 13th, and 14th. This 4 day tournament
is to be played at 3 Anaheim locations: La Palma, Brookhurst
and Boysen Parks. The games will be played at 10:00AM,
1:00PM, 4:00PM and 7:00PM.
Our fellow Anaheim Lions provide a great community event.
There is a tremendous amount of planning and work that goes
into this tournament to insure its success. Simply put, they need
all of us to pitch-in and help. If just one member of every club
were to get involved, it would take pressure off the Anaheim
lions. I know that there is at least one baseball nut in every
club. Contact Ken Hamilton at business phone 714/535-4100 or

We Should Honor Our Vets
The citizens of the United States can never thank our Veterans
enough! George Dooley of the Seal Beach Host Lions has a
very special way to try to express his gratitude. He has
instituted what he calls Vets Oral History Project. Let me have
George expand on this great program in his own words.
“Famous or ordinary, we each hold part of the nation’s
collective memory and, whether through stories at the dinner
table or speeches in front of thousands, we each share some of
the history of others. But, like all those who in some way
placed country above themselves, our veterans embody an
especially important piece of our national heritage. This

“My proposal to my club and the American Legion and VFW
of Seal Beach was to participate in this project with the Boy
Scouts. The Library of Congress web site contains all the
necessary guidelines to make this project a success. After
gathering the information there are several avenues for its
distribution including: local libraries, VFW and American
Legion Post archives, local colleges and schools as well as the
Library of Congress. I personally think that this would be a
wonderful way of sharing history with the younger

REPORT
District Chaplain
Pete Badame
This month I have a "gem" of a
story to present for you. A
simple tale of prudence and a bit
of irony, it hopefully will leave
you with a significant message:
The Traveling Angels - Author unknown
Two traveling angels stopped to spend the night at the
home of a wealthy family. The family was rude and
refused to let the angels stay in the mansion's guest
room. Instead the angels were given a small space in the
cold basement.
As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel
saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger
angel asked why, the older angel simply replied, "Things
aren't always what they seem."
The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very
poor, but very hospitable farmer and his wife. After
sharing what little food they had, the couple let the angels
sleep in their warm bed where they could have a good
night's rest. When the sun came up the next morning the
angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only
cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead in
the field.
The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older
angel how she could have let this happen? "The first
family had everything, yet you helped them," she accused.
"This family had little but was willing to share everything,
yet you let their cow die." "Things aren't always what
they seem," the older angel replied.

the wall. Since the owners were so obsessed with greed
and unwilling to share their good fortune, I sealed the wall
so they would never find it. Then last night as we slept in
the farmer's bed, the Angel of Death came for his wife, but
I gave him the cow instead. Things aren't always what
they seem."
Sometimes this is exactly what happens when things don't
seem to turn out the way we would like. If we have faith, we
just need to trust that every outcome will always be to our
advantage; we just may not know it until some time later. The
farmer and his wife in this story may never know that the
tragedy that had befallen them was really a blessing. Things
aren't always what they seem. This is what faith is all about.
Yours in the spirit of Lionism and in the service of our
Creator, Lion Pete

FOOTHILL REGION
REPORT
It's been a crazy couple of
months. Between Christmas
shopping, Trees, The Float and
an unscheduled trip to Florida in
mid-December I got buried so
deep they even buried my
shovel! It's taken me a bit of time
to dig back out. The Clubs of the
Foothill region have been busier:
The Ontario Host Lions put together and distributed 160
Christmas Basket to needy families in their area. They're also
working with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on a Lions Day
at the Quakes, scheduled for June 17th. The cost will be $16
and includes a Bar-B-Q dinner in the Pavilion. Let's get
behind this and show the Quakes what Lion Sprit is all about.
The Ontario/Upland Lions were presented with a plaque and a
letter of recognition from the City of Claremont for their work
on the relief effort in the Padua/Grand Prix fire last October.
Our District distributed $10,000 in emergency grant money to
fire victims. The city thanked the Lions not just for helping,
but for not waiting to be asked.
The Chino Valley Leos put in a lot of hours in December,
working on their sponsoring Club's tree lot, participating in the
Chino Hills Christmas Parade, running a toy drive for and
working on a Christmas relief program at Isaiah's Rock in
Chino and coming out to help decorate our Rose Parade Float.
These kids have already recorded over 2,200 hours of service
work, and the year is only half over.
My own Chino Hills Lions survived out 11th year on our
Christmas Tree lot, putting in over 2000 hours of work from a
combined force of Lions, Leos, Boy Scouts, and other friends.
Thanks, and a check, go to our fellow Lions of the Diamond
Bar Breakfast Lions, who made some extra money for their
Club by helping with the project. With the funds from the lot
we were able to make a final payment of $22,500 to the Chino
Hills Parks & Rec. Dept. on our $60,000 share in a stage
trailer that we had agreed to help them buy. The city had
previously had to rent a similar trailer from Anaheim.
Brea Lions reported that they raised $2,000 with their "Rent A
Santa" program.
The La Habra Lions continue to literally put into practice our
motto "We Serve" by serving dinner once a month at the
Ronald McDonald House near CHOC. I understand that this is
a popular project in the Club. The sign-up list never leaves the
first table it goes to! Other Clubs in the Region are starting to
take up this project as well.
Congratulations to PDG Chuck for a fine Melvin Jones dinner.
Over 160 Lions attended and enjoyed a fine dinner and a
stirring speech by Immediate Past International President Kay
Fukushima. Three Lions were surprised with Melvin Jones
Fellowships: Sandy Richmond, Jack Tanaka and Dorothy
Hurd; and Lion Scott Newton received his sixth(!!!)
progressive diamond. Only 4 other Lions in our District have
5 progressives. "Sneaky" points go to Wanda Tanaka for her
story to Jack about the mail from LCIF. Jack had no idea that
he was being honored until his name was called. Chuck has
definitely set a high mark for the coming years MJF dinners.
At the MD-4 Convention in Stateline I heard about a project
that the Lions of Fresno County in District 4-L2 have started.
It's called Kases for Kids. They gather suitcases and other
luggage that people are no longer using and donate these to
children who are being removed from their home by Social
Services. These kids often have what little of their belongings
they can take with them thrown into grocery bags or trash
bags. The Lions provide suitcases with a stuffed lion and a
nametag for the child to write their name on. They're looking
for help in getting their project recognized as an MD-4 service
project. Please contact Lion Happy Van Caster
<[email protected]> for more information on
this fine program.
By the time this goes to print the Club and Zone Student
speaker contests will be history and the Region contests will
be in progress. These kids are AWESOME. When most of us
were their age it terrfied us to get up in from of our classmates
and give a speech. These young men and ladies are speaking
to a room of strangers. The skills and confidence they gain
from this will serve them well, whatever they chose to do as a
career. Let's all get out there at the District meeting in April
and give them our support.
At MD-4 PIP Kajit Habanananda reminded us of a quote from
Mother Teresa: "We can't all do great things, but we can all do
things with great love." Let's all remember to bring love to
what we do, not just in Lions, but in our homes and our jobs as
well.

DEVELOPING
RESPONSIBILITY
IN MEMBERSHIP
Several club presidents have expressed an interest in learning
how to develop a sense of responsibility and accountability in
their members. This issue is a tough one for volunteer
organizations. With so many demands on people's time family, career, home -- volunteer activities sometimes fall to
the end of the priority list, no matter how committed a person
is to his or her club. While some people are very organized
and honor all their commitments with ease - others need a
little help. Try one of these tactics:

Print an annual calendar listing all pertinent dates.
Print important dates each month in your newsletter
and on your club's Web site.
Review upcoming dates during club meetings.
Create a phone tree. A phone tree is designed like a
pyramid -- the club president contacts a few members
to remind them of an important date; in turn, those
people contact a few designated members, who then
contact their list of members and so on until all
members are called. This way, no one is burdened
with phoning the entire membership.
Create an e-mail loop. Have all your members' email addresses in one group. Send reminder e-mails
of important dates and activities.
Have people sign up for specific duties. Whether
during club meetings, fundraisers or service
activities, have all members commit to performing a
specific task at a specific time. Have committee
chairmen follow up with their committee members to
remind them of their responsibilities.
Keep your meetings interesting and fun. Make sure
your meetings are worth your members' time and
effort.
Spread out responsibilities evenly. Ask all members
to contribute. Many hands make light work.
Be sure your members feel involved and needed.
Give them responsibilities that match their talents
and interests.
How come, when you mix
water and flour together you
get glue, but when you add eggs
and sugar you get cake?
Where did the glue go?
NEED AN ANSWER?
You know darned well where it went ...
It's what makes the cake stick to your rear end!
