Imaging Institute Updates
Imaging Institute Renovation and
Expansion Continue
Construction documents for Phase II (expansion
of existing CT facilities into Gb3) were completed
in September 2011, with construction targeted
to begin in March 2012. Installation of the
Siemens AS+128 CT in the Emergency
Department is complete.
Expansion of cardiac MRI facilities in J1
continues to move forward, with construction
nearing completion. Funding has been
approved for the A2-259 digital conversion
with construction in progress.
Construction is complete for the A-20 research
mammography unit, with final connections to be
made when equipment is delivered. The Fb20
interventional suite replacement is complete,
and patient procedures are being performed.
Funding for the design of Phase III (expansion of
Angio facilities) has been approved. Mellen Center
7T MRI design is in progress, with construction
tentatively starting in April 2012 and equipment
delivery in December 2012.
Migration to Agfa PACS Moves Forward
Migration of the Agfa PACS continues.
Implementation has been completed at Main
Campus, Lakewood, Lutheran, Fairview,
Marymount, Medina, Weston, Hillcrest, Euclid,
Ashtabula and South Pointe facilities. Migration
of images from Siemens PACS to Agfa continues.
Imaging Institute Informatics and Agfa are
reviewing options for ongoing image storage,
along with CCF ITD evaluating “Cloud” (off-site
storage) options. The Enterprise Image Viewer has
started an aggressive implementation schedule,
with planned CCHS enterprise implementation
completion by third quarter 2012.
Imaging Institute Launches New Storage and
Distribution Technology
The Imaging Institute has installed new
technology for the storage and distribution of all
radiology images (X-rays, CT scans, etc.). The
new system replaces the Syngo Imaging Viewer,
providing faster image retrieval as well as offering
a suite of advanced tools for image enhancement
and annotation.
The Enterprise Imaging Project is implementing
the new technology in a phased approach that
began in January with the Anesthesia, Cole
Eye, Dermatology and Plastic Surgery, Digestive
Disease and Urology institutes.

Daniel Lockwood, MD,
Appointed Radiology
Residency Program Director
The Imaging Institute
appointed Daniel Lockwood,
MD (DR’08, NR’09), as the
new Program Director for the
Radiology Residency Program.
After completing his radiology residency and
neuroradiology fellowship at Cleveland Clinic,
Dr. Lockwood joined as neuroradiology staff in
2009. He also serves as Chair for the Imaging
Institute Educational Committee.
As part of the internationally acclaimed
Cleveland Clinic, the faculty of the Radiology
Residency Program and the Imaging Institute
aim to train future radiologists of the highest
caliber. Cleveland Clinic’s main campus, eight
community hospitals and 18 family health
centers perform and interpret more than 1.9
million imaging studies. These facilities are
equipped with state-of-the-art imaging technology,
offering radiology residents with a variety of
training opportunities. With such advantages,
our graduates are well positioned at the end of
the four-year program to enter a subspecialty
fellowship program or private practice.

Our Radiology
Residency Program
accepts eight
residents per year
for a total of 32
resident positions.
More than 100
board-certified, full-time faculty members guide
the training experience in diagnostic imaging
from both the basic science and the clinical
perspective. Over 48 months of training, our
residents develop a thorough understanding of
anatomy and radiographic findings in health and
disease, enabling them to distinguish between
normal and abnormal
findings including
normal variants. The
patient volume at
Cleveland Clinic ensures
extensive exposure to
the everyday and the
unusual. Residents gain a thorough knowledge
of the appropriate indications for particular
examinations and which studies enhance or
complement the diagnostic evaluations of various
disorders. Our residents formulate a succinct,
objective description of an abnormality and
convey a logical differential diagnosis based on
that data. By progression through the training
program, a graduated level of supervised
responsibility and autonomy is attained.

Around CCHS
New Health Center Named in Honor of Tubbs Jones
Cleveland Clinic Stephanie Tubbs Jones Health Center opened
in October 2011. Previously known as the Cleveland Clinic
Huron Community Health Center, the $25-million facility is
named in honor of Stephanie Tubbs Jones, a congresswoman,
judge and prosecutor who devoted her career to public service
before her untimely death in 2008. Situated on Euclid Avenue,
the three-story, 50,000-square-foot center is designed to reach
beyond traditional healthcare services and link with community
resources in one location to make it easier for patients to access
healthcare, social and financial services.
New Building Opens for
Pathology, Laboratory Medicine
The new Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Institute (PLMI) and Cleveland Clinic Laboratories
building is up and running. The building will
improve medical testing capabilities and create
hundreds of new jobs for our enterprise. The new
building features state-of-the-art laboratories
for testing of tissues and other samples and will
allow Cleveland Clinic to provide services to other
healthcare institutions nationally.
Located near the intersection of East 105th
Street and Carnegie Avenue, it is three stories
and 135,000 square feet. With a staff of more
than 80 board-certified anatomic and clinical
pathologists and more than 1,500 medical
technologists, laboratory technicians and support
staff, PLMI laboratories operate 24 hours a day,
seven days a week.
Richard E. Jacobs Health Center Opens in Avon
The state-of-the-art Richard E. Jacobs Health
Center opened in December, replacing the
Westlake Family Health Center to bring worldclass healthcare to Avon, Lorain County and
surrounding communities.
Continuing the commitment to providing
healthcare services across Northeast Ohio, the
new center offers primary care and more than 30
specialty services, including cardiology, neurology,
nutrition services, podiatry and urology. Imaging
services provided include MRI (3T), CT (20-row),
Nuclear Medicine, Digital Mammography units
(2), General X-Ray (4), Ultrasound units (2) and
bone density.

190,000-squarefoot center
includes a
pharmacy, on-site laboratory and full conference
facilities. Four operating rooms, four procedure
rooms and 23-hour overnight stay capabilities

United Way Campaign Runs Year-round
Although the official kickoff date for United Way is in September, the campaign runs all year
long. A series of payroll events are scheduled throughout the year to benefit United Way. The
events are held at Main Campus, Lerner Commons, Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to
5 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A bedding sale will be held May 7 – 11, with sheets,
towels, comforters and other items available. An electronics sale, including TVs, cameras,
computers and blue rays, will take place August 20 – 24. Dynamic fundraising will occur
November 26 – 30, with clothes, coats, timberland boots, perfume and other items for sale.
Cleveland Clinic employees can purchase select merchandise at these events, with
20 percent of the purchase price going to United Way and the remainder going to the vendor.
The purchase is deducted from the employee’s paychecks in four installments.

Consulting Radiologist
In December, each Imaging Institute Section started identifying a daily “consulting
radiologist.” A primary role of the consulting radiologist is to provide consults
to referring physicians on exam appropriateness and radiation dose, in addition
to providing patient consults when requested. Each Section specifies the daily
consulting radiologist on both AmCom and the Section schedule.
Professional Presentations
Imaging Institute staff will present 19 abstracts at the annual meeting of
the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS), being held April 29 – May 4 in
Vancouver, Canada.

Announcements
Abraham Levitin, MD, Interventional Radiologist,
was appointed Clinical Director-Interventional
Radiology, effective May 1.
Renee Kolonick is the Regional Vice PresidentOncology for the eastern region hospitals,
effective in September. Kolonick previously
was Administrative Director for Imaging at
Hillcrest Hospital.
Craig Irish, MD (GL-1’77, DR’80), Regional
Radiology-Fairview, passed away October 13 after
a six-year battle with myeloma. Dr. Irish joined
the Fairview medical staff in 1980 and served
as Chair of the Department of Radiology and the
Credentials Committee. Survivors include his wife
Kimberly, daughters Meredith Peetz-Larsen (Niels)
and Elizabeth Nelson (Jim), grandchildren Sonja
and Christian, mother Muriel and brothers Keith
(Mary) and Jeffrey (Maggie Brasted).
Ron Young joined Taussig Cancer Institute as the
Administrator of Radiation Oncology (Region and
Main) in October. He previously served as the
Clinical Manager for Nuclear Medicine at Main
Campus for more than 20 years.
Paul Johnson, MS, DABR, was appointed Section
Head of Medical Physics in December.
Roseann Spitznagel’s functions were enhanced to
include Syngo responsibilities in December.
George Belhobek, MD (GL-1’70, DR’73), MSK
Radiologist at Main Campus, retired December
31. Dr. Belhobek, a former Chair of Diagnostic
Radiology, began his career at Cleveland Clinic in
July 1975.
Christine Quinn, MD (DR’75), Radiologist
in Breast Imaging at Main Campus, retired
December 31. Dr. Quinn began her career at
Cleveland Clinic as a Staff Radiologist in 1975.

Cleveland Clinic TV Campaign Launched
in February
Cleveland Clinic launched a new television advertising
campaign in February to run in the Northeast Ohio
market for several months. Called “The Power of
Today,” the campaign features 30- and 60-second
spots showing Cleveland Clinic caregivers and their
family members, highlighting each day of the week as
a great day to seek Cleveland Clinic’s world-class care.
Same-day access is featured in each commercial.
Reinforcing the Cleveland Clinic commitment, the new
ads spotlight some of our 43,000 caregivers, including
those in Taussig and the regional cancer locations.
“Best cancer care in Ohio” is also a featured message.
With 300 spots airing each week, the call volume to
the ad’s 888.223.CARE phone number has averaged
in the 70s each day. Cleveland Clinic Marketing and
Communications Department worked with Bunker
New York, a film production company, to produce
the commercials.
Office of Patient Experience
Cleveland Clinic CEO and President Toby Cosgrove, MD,
created the Office of Patient Experience in 2007,
recognizing that successful healthcare organizations
no longer compete solely on the quality of their clinical
outcomes. Patients also expect a high level of service.
The Imaging Institute has the potential to impact patient
experience, which can be challenging considering our
brief window to make an impression. However, our rising
outpatient scores and number of positive phone calls to
our Institute PE telephone line indicate that we are on the
right track. The Institute PE Committee meets monthly
and welcomes suggestions of innovative ways to exceed
