Leave everything in God’s hands for he will take care of you.” St. John Baptist de La Salle While it is easy to read this quote, it is much more difficult to practice in everyday life. These words from St. John Baptist de La Salle provide a sense of comfort for each of us as together we face the many challenges of our world today. Change is never easy, and yet if we believe that God will take care of us, we can move forward each day, doing His work. This year at St. Patrick - St. Vincent High School we have welcomed change, trusting that God would provide for the needs of our community, and knowing that we had the support of our Alumni and friends. Often change is messy, and this year was no exception, however through the Divine Providence of God we stand here today grateful, and pleased with the outcome. And with gratitude to our Lord, and to our community, we are well positioned to serve the next generation of students at St. Patrick-St. Vincent High School. Principal Notes Words from Dave Perry In the previous edition of The Bridge I announced that we had identified our new Principal, Mrs. Coleen Martin. In this edition you will have the opportunity to “meet” Coleen, as well as our new Assistant Principal Dr. Doug Evans and our new Dean, Patrick Vogelpohl. This new administrative team, in conjunction with our amazing faculty and staff, have prepared a solid foundation for the future growth of our beloved school. In addition to the wonderful things happening daily in our school, there have been many wonderful events that have supported the daily operation of our school. This year, our 3rd Annual Winemaker’s Dinner welcomed our largest crowd ever, and exceeded our fundraising expectations as well. We elected a wonderful new group of Hall of Fame members, and announced at the event the kickoff our campaign to fund an endowed scholarship in the name of our beloved Millie Duvall SV‘85. I hope that this edition of The Bridge allows you to catch up on all that is going on in the life of St. Patrick - St. Vincent High School. If you have not been on campus in a while, I hope that this inspires you to make a visit...I would love to show you around, and tell you all about the many wonderful things that are happening each day...the things that your prayers and generosity support! In the peace of St. Patrick and St. Vincent, Dave Perry President Office of Advancement Summer 2016 2 On Campus 2015-2016 Meet the New Administrators In The Three Musketeers, Alexandre Dumas writes, “All for one and one for all, united we stand divided we fall.” That can also be said for Coleen Martin, Doug Evans and Patrick Vogelpohl--SPSV’s new principal, assistant principal and dean, respectively. This team of three believes in helping all students feel at home at SPSV while also pushing them to excel in our classrooms and beyond. What brought you to St. Patrick-St. Vincent (SPSV) High School? Coleen Martin (CM): My parents fostered my dedication to Catholic education. I continued to nurture my commitment when I made the decision to send my children to Catholic elementary school. While I served as a public school teacher and administrator for seventeen years, last year I felt drawn to an administrative position at a Catholic school. Dave Perry and I were colleagues years ago, and we share a lot of the same beliefs in Catholic education. Once he took the position at SPSV, he mentioned he was looking for a principal. Then we engaged in many conversations about SPSV and, once I visited the school and saw the job posting, I applied. I felt as though my prayers for professional renewal were answered. Doug Evans (DE): I love what Catholic education can do. We have the power to transform lives and shape what children learn. I’ve also held a number of leadership positions in a Catholic high school setting and I was eager for a new challenge. I completed a doctoral dissertation related to professional development and wanted to be in a position where I could apply that skill and knowledge more directly. In addition, the charisms of both the Dominicans and the Irish Christian Brothers had a strong impact on both my professional and spiritual identity. SPSV’s historical relationship with those orders was compelling for me. Patrick Vogelpohl (PV): First, the students and staff are dynamic and kind. Every student and teacher I met while interviewing was incredibly nice and passionate about SPSV. Second, Dave Perry assembled an administrative team that is perfect for this school. He, Coleen Martin and Doug Evans are focused on doing what is best for our students. The four of us spend considerable time debating how our decisions affect all Bruins. You just don’t find such collaboration at many schools. Third and finally, much of my father’s family lives in Benicia, and I spent a ton of time right off I-780 when I was a kid. I grew up in Fairfield and went to public schools, but my parents always wanted to send me to SPSV. So I had to take the job! 3 Coleen, the president-principal model of administration is fairly new to SPSV. Can you tell us how it works? CM: My predecessor was here for 10 years and handled everything from the budget to everyday academic life. The new model of president and principal in separate roles allows me to handle the day-to-day academic and student needs so Dave can focus on fundraising, advancement, admissions and networking in the community. You now have almost a full school year under your belt at SPSV. What have you been able to do so far? Do different aspects of your job require more of your attention right now? DE: As with any new job, there’s always some ramp up time. Aside from the day-to-day expectations, you come in to a new job and want to make changes that will work for you. You also need to find a balance between making changes that you know will be successful while keeping enough order so that our veteran faculty and staff are still comfortable. The good news is that I love multitasking and I’m very big on committees and teamwork. One of the things I did early on at SPSV is beef up several committees, including technology, counseling, academic review board, and campus ministry. The tech committee is new and chaired by our phenomenal Jay McCabe, SPSV’s head of educational technology. The counseling committee is also new and includes Patrick Vogelpohl and Lane Hawkins, our athletic director. We meet once a week and focus on implementing turnaround strategies for the students who are failing classes. Our academic review board focuses on overseeing each students’ academic progress. These committees have helped our school tremendously, but because we have other teachers and staff assuming leadership roles in them, I’ve been able to focus a big portion of my time this year on revising our course catalog. I’m really excited for next school year to start because we’re adding a number of UC-approved courses, including: AP Government and Politics, Wind Ensemble, Ceramics, Studio Editing and a host of PE offerings. PV: As dean, safety and discipline are top priorities, and that won’t change. However, I want students to see me as a resource. I’m here to help navigate conflicts with teachers and classmates. I’m here to listen to ideas about how to make SPSV better - and to help some of these ideas come to life. But all of this takes more than a year. The Bridge — St. Patrick - St.Vincent High School What are some of your goals for your tenure here at SPSV High School? CM: I view myself as the day-to-day spiritual and academic leader for the SPSV community (students, parents, and staff), and I’m focused on making sure our students are well rounded, spiritually and academically. CM: Every new school year is an opportunity to build a community that I feel is best for my own children as I am serving the children of others. I want a school that’s advancing in the ever-changing world of technology and academics. I want for that school to be the top school in its community. It’s important to me that students are well rounded spiritually and academically. SPSV has given me a golden opportunity to share my Catholic faith and academic philosophies. DE: Helping make dreams accessible. PV: I do all I can to help all of our kids become healthy, happy and intellectually curious adults--even the ones that need extra help. What is the biggest challenge and biggest opportunity you face in your SPSV position? DE: The biggest challenge I see also happens to be the biggest opportunity. Long story short, a lot of our students need to dream bigger. We have so many students who are capable of so much more than they hope to accomplish both now and down the road. We have a lot of students who are comfortable dreaming big when it comes to athletics but I want to see them dream bigger with college, jobs, and life beyond SPSV. Don’t let the fear of failure stop you from dreaming. Also, there’s a lot of scholarship money that we’re leaving on the table. We are not sending enough students to small, private schools such as St. Mary’s College, USF, Santa Clara and Loyola Marymount. Frequently these schools offer very generous scholarships and can be cheaper than a UC once financial aid is taken into account. The opportunity I see for myself at SPSV is to transform lives and enable our students to dream bigger. I will take any kid that’s willing to work and we will get them into a four-year college. PV: The big challenge is getting some students to do another sixty minutes of homework a night. By doing so, many B students could become B-plus or even A-minus students. Just a little more effort could lead to more college acceptance letters with better financial aid packages. Our big opportunity lies in our diversity. Every school day, kids of all colors and economic backgrounds come to SPSV and work together without issue. The overwhelming majority work very well in a wide range of groups and environments. So for me, here is the opportunity: Let’s get more Bruins into colleges seeking students that will thrive in an increasingly diverse world. Excellent schools across the country are looking for kids like ours. Summer 2016 DE: I believe the educational mission of the Church is to teach students to know and love Jesus. Catholic schools transform both minds and hearts. Catholic high schools reach young people at a pivotal point of growing reason and curiosity. At this stage, we can plant the seeds for a truly adult appropriation of the faith. I believe strongly that Catholic education should do more than simply better the situation of one generation. Rather, Catholic education has the power to transform the world by instilling in its graduates a passion for service and justice, and giving them the intellectual and leadership skills needed to be true agents of change. As leaders, we need to provide a safe, encouraging environment for our SPSV students to learn. Quality discipline, which holds students accountable for their behavior, teaches them the consequences of their actions and ensures a safe learning environment. Good schools push students to achieve above and beyond what they may perceive as limiting factors. My goal is to maintain an environment where the entire community - teachers, parents, coaches, counselors, and administrators - work together to safeguard the success of students while incorporating skill-and project-based learning to provide an education for the twenty-first century. These goals are coupled with an understanding that education comes with an obligation and a responsibility to use one’s talents and gifts to improve the world. We must instill a yearning for peace and justice in our students, as well as an understanding of their role in the larger, global community. On Campus If you had to describe your position in one sentence, what would that sentence be? PV: First, I want all of our students to feel like they fit in at SPSV. Not 97% of students. Not 99% of students. Not just the kids from parochial elementary and middle schools. All of them. I don’t care if this sounds like an impossible goal. We have to try to achieve it. Also, SPSV’s counselors work hard to prepare students and parents for the college admission process and the financial aid hunt. But they need help. They can’t do it all. Doug Evans and I want to help our counselors to expand their efforts. We have the talent and capacity to offer more information throughout the year. 4 On Campus You all come from different settings and positions ones that are quite a bit different than your current SPSV seats. How has it been so far? CM: I feel as though this year has taken me on a spiritual and professional journey more powerful than I could ever have anticipated. Although I grew up going to private Catholic schools, my career stemmed in the public sector. Being a Catholic educator in a public setting, I was not gifted with the opportunity to share my faith along with my educational philosophies as I am here at St. Patrick- St. Vincent High School. I have been blessed with tremendous support from both the SPSV community as well as from the Diocese of Sacramento. The faculty and staff at SPSV are focused on spiritually and academically developing students into successful young adults. The new administrative team has come together sharing the common goal of always putting students first and celebrating student success. The diocese has extended their hand in providing guidance in everything from liturgical celebrations to professional development opportunities to support with everyday questions regarding personnel and volunteer staff. SPSV and the Diocese of Sacramento provide supportive and nurturing environments for all of their community members. These two entities have made my transition to St. Patrick-St. Vincent a smooth transition. DE: I believe my strength in transition is my power of seeking advice from other people. The nice thing about Catholic education is that people are always willing to help. If I don’t know how something works, I don’t hesitate to figure it out. The faculty and staff at SPSV have been an invaluable resource. If I see another school having success with a particular program, I find out how it works so that we can implement similar, successful programs at SPSV. Over the last year, I’ve met with many of the other Catholic high schools in our area to review best practices and see where and how we can strengthen our SPSV programs. In addition to the committee and course catalog changes we talked about earlier, there are a lot of other adjustments I’ve helped implement. PV: Before accepting this position, I was teaching college English. Transitioning out of the classroom has been fine, so far. My teaching style was studentfocused. I was good at finding each student’s intellectual strengths and weaknesses. Then I’d work with them to build on both. Being a dean isn’t much different. Now I just have more students. But no grading! 5 Tell us about your families. Do you have any children? What are they doing? CM: I come from a family of three where I’m the only child to earn an undergraduate and master’s degree. I’ve been married since 1997 to a man I met when I was 15 years old. We have a daughter in seventh grade who’s a swimmer and water polo player. She finds peace in the water and is so excited to start the aquatics programs here at SPSV. Our son is in fifth grade and loves soccer, basketball and swimming. We have an incredible extended family but we’re the only ones in California. I think that’s made my family of four very tight knit. DE: I have have a busy home life. I’ll be celebrating my fouteenth wedding anniversary in August with my wife Anna. Professionally she has worked for the church and is currently a hospice volunteer coordinator and chaplain. She recently finished a Doctorate in Ministry at St. Louis University. I have two sons. Lawrence is currently at a Montessori preschool and will be attending St. Philip in Alameda with his brother next year. Rex is in third grade at St Philip and loves dinosaurs - pretty fitting for his name. His dream is to be a paleontologist. In fact, we went to L.A. over Spring Break and had two major stops. The first was Disneyland where my son Lawrence (after the World of Color show) whispered in awe, “magic IS real.” The next stop was the Natural History Museum and I think Rex enjoyed that more than the world of Mickey! As a family we love to travel, but camping is where it’s at. The boys love dirt. With camping, Anna and I can let them run amuck without worrying if they’ll break hotel lamps. PV: I married my beautiful and charming wife Joanna in 2007. We have two boys. Charlie is six and one of the coolest kids in the world. He spends his time drawing, free-building Lego creations and is a cartoon aficionado. He is destined for art school. Then there is Henry, our two year old. Henry is a three-foot-tall hurricane that will probably spend significant time in his dean’s office. But he actually has great manners. The Bridge — St. Patrick - St.Vincent High School Mrs. Coleen Martin is the Principal of St. Patrick - St. Vincent High School. She has been a high school and middle school administrator for fourteen years. She earned her undergraduate degree in education from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and her master’s degree in educational leadership from Chapman University in Orange, California. She is excited and honored to lead the SPSV community in academic excellence and service. It is with a warm heart that Mrs. Martin welcomes all students and families to St. Patrick - St. Vincent High School. St. Vincent High School during the 2014 - 2015 school year. While there are signs nationally that the economy is improving, the lasting effects of the recession are still present, and we understand the challenges that still exist for many of our brothers and sisters. With that in mind, I am very grateful for your continued support. We know how blessed we are in our work, and the many benefits bestowed upon our students, because of your contributions. In this Annual Report portion of The Bridge, you will see charts and graphs related to the budget of the school, sources of income, and percentages of expenditures. Your contributions, small or large, makes a difference. As you have heard in the past, the percent of participation of our various constituent groups is critical not only for our school, but as an indicator to outside groups who may be asked to support our school. Our faculty and staff led the way once again. I also want to thank our various support groups whose events help to defray expenses for the school. Our Catholic School Advisory Commission, the Parents’ Club, the Board of Regents, and the Boosters all work to make that critical difference. Whether helping to update our campus or supporting our growing student financial assistance programs, these groups continue to establish a strong foundation for the School’s future. Parental service hours helped to sustain many of the fundraising efforts of these groups. On behalf of the students, faculty and staff, I thank you for your gifts. Know that you are remembered in our daily prayers as we recall our SPSV family near and far. In the peace of St. Patrick and St. Vincent, Dave Perry President Office of Advancement Annual Report — St. Patrick - St.Vincent High School This issue of The Bridge celebrates our Graduates from the Class of 2015. We are also introducing our new administrative team who are about to start their second school year with us. These are some of the most intelligent and energetic people I have had the pleasure of working with here at SPSV. I was thinking about the changes that have been made in the last three years. Though change is uncomfortable I think these past few years have allowed us to assess what we do as a school and how we can best allocate our resources to benefit today’s student. At St. Patrick - St. Vincent High School we are a part of a long legacy of; Tradition + Transition = Transcendent. Transcendent is defined by Oxford English Dictionary as 1.1 Surpassing the ordinary; exceptional. The last of Our Dominican Sisters of San Rafael have moved back to their primary residence in San Rafael. This year, in place of our Hall of Fame, we will honor all of these wonderful women and their 146 years of service to Vallejo and our schools. Join us in celebrating the Sisters by attending our event, and/or send us your memories of the Sisters during your time at our school or parishes. Enjoy seeing the Class of 2015 and look for the issue surrounding the Class of 2016 to be in your mailbox soon. Thank you so much for continuing to support us. You are an amazing generous group who are living the motto “leave a place better than you found it.” We were all touched by our four years at SV, SP and SPSV. We are thankful for the Dominican Sisters and Christian Brothers who guided us through our long history. Young alum are grateful to the wonderful people who accepted their calling to serve St. Patrick – St. Vincent High School. Please join me in making a gift in thanksgiving for all that you received from this magical place. Your generosity allows us to have 100% of our students go to college. Your generosity enables us to continue to offer wonderful leadership and retreat programs. Your generosity allows us to stay current with advances in education. One exciting example is the certificate programs now in available in Biomedical Sciences and International Studies. Your support allows us to enroll students who could not afford to be here without your financial assistance. As alumni, you can expect to hear more from St. Patrick - St. Vincent High School and about how current students, faculty and staff, alumni and so many others are creating an impact in our greater community. We are proud of our tradition and promise that you too will be proud. Proud of the vision we have and journey we continue on at St. Patrick - St. Vincent High School. It will be Transcendent. Sincerely, Sheila Lynch Williams SV’85 Director of Admissions Office of Advancement 2014 — 2015 Annual Report 2014-2015 Dear Fellow Alums, Parents and Friends of SV, SP and SPSV, Revenue - Expenses 2014-2015 St. Patrick - St. Vincent High School Revenue - Expenses 2014-2015 Income Tuition & Fees Donations Bookstore Athletics, Including Spirit Squad Development Rent Summer Programs Cafeteria Miscellaneous Total, income % $6,279,298 27,193 95,690 130,737 113,270 70,352 50,825 113,455 30,984 90.7% 0.4% 1.4% 1.9% 1.6% 1.0% 0.7% 1.6% 0.6% 6,920,804 Expense Student Grant-in-Aid (Net of Cash Contributions & Endowmwnt Transfers) Instructional Salaries Administration, Advancement & Technology Insurance Educational Supplies Athletics & Spirit Squad Employee Benefits Bookstore Plant Operations Summer Programs Caferteria Transportation (Net of Reimbursements) Transfer to Special Funds & Endowments Transfer to Capital Reserves Miscellaneous & Bad Debt Total, expense 802,585 2,278,541 1,302,262 140,513 135,188 228,312 935,681 87,070 510,621 46,791 99,562 97,478 29,641 213,634 2,914 11.6% 32.9% 18.8% 2.0% 2.0% 3.4% 13.5% 1.3% 7.4% 0.7% 1.4% 1.4% 0.4% 3.1% 0.0% 6,920,804 Net Income $0 2013 - 2014 Tuition & Registration $13,892 2013 - 2014 Per Student Cost $15,312 Number of students (year’s average) Amount 452 Annual Report — St. Patrick - St.Vincent High School Development Athletics, including Spirit Squad Rent Summer Programs Cafeteria Miscellaneous Bookstore Donations Tuition and Fees Expenses - 2014-2015 Cafeteria Summer Programs Plant Operations Bookstore Transportation Transfer to Special Funds & Endowments Transfer to Capital and Operating Reserves Miscellaneous and Bad Debt Student Grant-in-Aid Employee Benefits Athletics, & Spirit Squad Educational Supplies Insurance 2014 — 2015 Revenue - Expenses 2014-2015 Revenue - 2014-2015 Instructional Salaries Admin, Admissions, & Technology Annual Appeal Donors 2014-2015 We thank our family and friends for their continuing support of our efforts . . . March 1951, him and six classmates joined the USAF Reserve and became “weekend warriors”. One month after graduation, he and his classmates were called into active duty in the Korean War. They became communication operators or electronics repairmen. In 1954, the war ended and they received honorable discharge if they chose so. Gene received his BS in Mathematics from Cal Poly, SLO. He worked at Pacific Missile Range for seven years, mostly as a Systems Programmer and at IBM Corporation for 25 years as a Staff Programmer. Gene is also the author of Birth of an Industry Computers in the Early Years by Gene Denk © 2012 (look in SPSV library or search for Gene Denk on Amazon.com). Recently Gene was a Career Day Presenter to the Students of SPSV on January 17, 2013. Gene was recently widowed. His wife, Lorraine, of 57 years passed away on March 30, 2015. They have nine children (two of whom followed in dad’s footsteps in the military), eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Antonio Pires SV’55 is currently retired, enjoying family and all that complicated living stuff, even teaching a bible class. Tony served in the US Army from 1960-1963 as a Technical Sergeant; aircraft radio repair. He received his BSEE from Heald Engineering College in SF in 1965 and his MSEE from University of Colorado, Boulder, CO in 1967. Tony worked several jobs before retiring in 1999. He worked in the Engineering Departments of Lockheed, Hughes Aircraft and Ampex; was the Dean of Engineering at Heald Engineering College and was the Marketing Engineer and Manager of Agilent and Hewlett Packard. After retirement, for the fun of it, he worked in technical sales & service with Straube and Home Depot. Tony is married to Gloria and they have six children, 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. 1960s Robert Conley SV’61 graduated St. Mary’s College in 1965 and entered the Army in 1966. Summer 2016 1970s Merian Marana Droesch SV’72 wrote in that recently she, Dan Heim SV’53 and Steve Morgan SV’61 collectively came to the recognition of their common background. They love their little mission church which is part of St. Joseph’s of Redding. They are active members of the congregation at St. Michael Archangel Mission Church in the City of Shasta Lake. Steve serves as a lector, Merian plays piano and sings in the choir and Dan supervises from the pews. She says the SV alums are making their presence known in the northern part of the state. 1980s Dr. Gregory Cox, Ph. D SP’84 works at The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, ME. He received a $1.5 million grant for his research in the treatment or cure of SMARD, a life threatening, motor neuron disorder affecting babies in the first six months of life. Alumni Corner Alumni Notes Captain Thomas R. Buchanan SPSV’88 said he partially credits his years at SPSV with preparing him for his job helping prevent a nuclear attack against the United States as the newly named Commander of the United States Navy Submarine Squadron 20. A change-of-command ceremony was held at the chapel aboard Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay on March 24, 2016. Captain Buchanan relieved William J. Houston as squadron commodore and is responsible for the maintenance and operations of five Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines; USS Alaska, USS Tennessee, USS West Virginia , USS Maryland and USS Wyoming and their 10 crews. Thomas grew up a “Navy junior,” (sometimes called a “military brat,” – a “pejorative term” he avoids using) and when his father was stationed at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, he lived in Vallejo for four years. He said he considers the Vallejo/ Benicia area home “for his formative years,” and “credits it with where I am today.” The foundation provided to him as a young man and his high school experiences, helped form the foundation upon which his life and career has been built, he said. “St. Patrick-St. Vincent High School – the athletic director, my high school baseball coach, all my teachers, the administration there at the time – were all terrific mentors,” he said. “We had a tight-knit group at St. Pat’s; we had a lot of athletic success during those years, and it’s a good place to be from.” It was also in Vallejo that the second-generation submarine officer said he met the woman who became his wife, Kelly Coyle Buchanan SPSV’90. Kelly was another Naval junior, whose father was one of the last commanding officers at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Though he said he never really considered any career other than a Naval one, within the Navy, a whole array of possible specialties 32 Alumni Corner Alumni Notes were available to him, but he was drawn to submarines. “While I was in the Naval Academy, you get to experience various branches of Naval service and submarines offered the opportunity to work with and serve with terrific enlisted folks – there was just something special about the submarine force team I was on.” “I love what I do,” he said. “I was always going to be a Naval officer and it’s worked out pretty well and I’ll continue to do it for as long as the Navy will allow me.” The father of two now stationed in southern Georgia, said the story of his life and career is still being written. for recreation facilities in California, Hawaii, Japan and most recently in Nevada and has managed various areas including: aquatics, outdoor recreation, senior services, youth programming and special events. In 2003, she graduated with a BS in Recreation and Leisure Studies from Sacramento State and she is currently finishing her Masters in Recreation Administration. Angela is a nationally recognized motivational speaker and has presented at various conferences across the country for the past 10 years. She has also been involved in local organizations promoting the importance of water safety awareness, the benefits of Parks and Recreation and the City’s Be Kind campaign, and has held various leadership positions within NRPS, NRPA and the Southern Nevada Child Drowning Prevention Coalition. Angela and her husband Isaac have 5 beautiful children and love calling Henderson their home. She is incredibly passionate about Parks and Recreation and the enormous benefits it brings to our community and looks forward to her new position with the City’s Public Works, Parks & Recreation Department. In her new role Angela will be overseeing operations and programming for Aquatics, the Downtown Recreation Center, the Bird Viewing Preserve, Parks and Recreation month and Emergency Management/Sheltering for the Recreation Division. 1990s 2000s Arsenio Navarro SPSV’91 has been quite busy since SPSV. After graduation, he went to USF to get his Bachelor’s in Biology. He worked for a year before going to law school where he finished his JD from Golden Gate University School of Law in 1999. He worked in the legal field for about 8 years – doing mostly Corporate Law type work towards the end. After much time working in a giant firm, he transitioned from the legal industry over to gaming industry. He has been working at Valve Corporation (video game producers and publishers) for the last decade or so in Merchandise Licensing. He gets to help create and distribute retail products based on video games, work in business development, retail product development and event planning. He really likes it and lots of fun. He graduated from SLO in 2012 and went on to be a rocket scientist and he has shared a video of his most recent rocket launch. Nelson was the Launch Vehicle Trajectory Analyst on the project which basically means, he was in charge of making sure that the rocket went where it was supposed to go. Jenielyn Dinoso Lopez SPSV ‘04 comes from a long line of career nurses (her mom, three aunts, one uncle, nine cousins, and two cousin-in-laws are all RNs) so it’s no surprise that Jenielyn became a registered nurse in 2009. In 2013, she obtained her Masters in Nursing in Clinical Nurse Leadership from University of San Francisco and also found the time to get married to a fellow nurse. Jenielyn has a specialty in acute care and is currently a nurse for Solano County Hospital, Northbay Healthcare. She’s also part of the Northbay Nurse Ambassadors program and an asset to her SPSV alma mater. Since December 2014, Jenielyn has been visiting SPSV monthly to promote and educate students interested in nursing. She’s participated in SPSV career days and has enabled many SPSV students to engage in Northbay Healthcare programs, including: Teen Volunteer, Follow a Nurse, and Summer Nurse Camp. Thank you SO much for all you do for SPSV, Jenielyn! The Bridge — St. Patrick - St.Vincent High School 2010s Christoffer Caro SPSV ‘10 graduated from UC Irvine in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. As a pre-dental student, and with the values of service and compassion that were taught to him at SPSV (thanks to Mrs. Roselle Macariola, Coach Matthew Boyle, and Mrs. Mary Mead), he organized a 2015 dental mission in Masinloc, Philippines. Prior to the mission, Christoffer traveled to the town many times to visit his mother’s side of the family. It was during these visits that he saw first hand just how many of Masinloc’s 44,000 impoverished citizens were in oral health detriment. Last May he headed to the Philippines with the goal of treating 600 patients (mainly with extractions and oral hygiene instruction) in two days! He couldn’t do it alone but was the man leading the mission. Through his parents’ dental connections, Christoffer was able to gather sponsors and 10 Manila-based dentists to complete the mission. He gathered funds and donations for supplies (antibiotics, pain relievers, cold sterilization materials, gauze, local anesthetics, toothbrushes/toothpaste, gloves, face masks), food, and travel accommodations for the dentists. The end result: his team of 10 dentists treated 670 children and adults in only two days! He was recently accepted into UCSF School of Dentistry and will be starting in Fall 2016. Congratulations Christoffer! Mark Bartolome SPSV’13 is in the nursing program at USF. He just finished clinicals at both St. Francis Memorial in SF and Kaiser in Oakland. Daniel Cooley SPSV’13 will be starting an internship at the US Embassy at the Vatican. Paolo Bartolome SPSV’14 is attending USF. He would like to pursue Kinesiology before heading into Pharmacy.
