We create and implement systems that boost Singapore’s ability to meet the people’s needs of food, water, shelter and growth. Find out how you can be a part of this. The Singapore Public Service | Our economy 1 Our economy MY STORY When I joined the Central Provident Fund Board (CPFB), I gained the opportunity to touch people’s lives. My eyes were opened to how I could personally make a difference to each and every one of them. It wasn’t until after I joined the Public Service that I realised what I was missing. People are my passion. I have always loved helping them as best as I can. I think this encouraged me to pursue a career in customer service. I feel incredibly validated receiving compliments on my service skills from my supervisors and customers. It fills me with pride knowing that I get to bring a human touch to the Public Service. I used to help customers pick out great outfits or the right ovens for their kitchens, but now I help people make informed decisions to secure their future. My role is important in helping Singaporeans understand the best options for their CPF Accounts. I used to think that I couldn’t really make a difference, but now I know that no matter how small my role may seem, I’m contributing towards building a better nation. Chua Ai Ti Senior Customer Service Executive Central Provident Fund Board The Singapore Public Service | Our economy 3 Our economy MY STORY While studying Aerospace Engineering at Nanyang Technological University, I always thought I would end up with a desk job at an aircraft maintenance company. Working in the Public Service had never crossed my mind. Then when I joined the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), I realised that I could apply my engineering skills in a different way. Now, I inspect amusement parks all over the country, and it was the best decision I ever made. Each of us can make a difference in our own way with our skills and strengths. I get to contribute to the public by helping to oversee the safety of every amusement ride in Singapore. In this role, I get to fulfil my purpose by applying my skills and passion for the outdoors. My work at BCA makes me feel alive and energised. I am proud to be part of a team that allows Singaporeans and our visitors to be safe while they are having fun. It is a big responsibility, but it is comforting to know that my job is not about serving the bottom line. It is about making the country a safer place for everyone. Victor Zheng Yuanhang Executive Engineer Building and Construction Authority The Singapore Public Service | Our economy 5 OUR ECONOMY MINISTRY OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND WATER RESOURCES (MEWR) SUSTAINABLE SINGAPORE Singapore is covered in greenery, with over 300 parks and four nature reserves. The Singapore Public Service | Our security 11 Our security MY STORY Deciding what you want to do with your life is not easy. I struggled and changed my mind several times before I finally figured out what I wanted. All it took was a good heart-to-heart talk with my uncle, who is a police officer. He shared his stories about how he helped people, and I was inspired. When I was growing up, my parents and teachers were the ones who helped me. I was able to have a life full of potential because of them. I eventually realised that the best way for me to pay them back was to pay it forward. I wanted to help other people get the same opportunities that I had. I have been a police officer since 2013. Although some of the cases that I have handled have been hard, I am comforted knowing that I play a part in making our home safe. Knowing that I get to help fill other people’s lives with potential makes me proud. Sukhveen Kaur Inspector of Police Team Leader, Yishun South Neighbourhood Police Centre Singapore Police Force The Singapore Public Service | Our security 13 Our security MY STORY I had a very difficult lesson to learn early on in my life. Growing up, I had a close friend whose father was addicted to drugs, and I watched how it destroyed him. I saw how it ruined my friend’s family and I was forever changed. I often think back to that time in my life and wonder if things could have been different. I used to watch shows like ‘Triple Nine’ and ‘Miami Vice’, and they really shaped the way I think. They showed me that no matter how much trouble there was in the world, anything could be overcome if we tried hard enough. They taught me to see that no matter how bad things get, there is always a way through. This is why I entered law enforcement. I didn’t want to sit by and do nothing while bad things happened to those around me. I wanted to do more to make other people’s lives better. To me, there is nothing more important. Muhammad Aliff Bin Abdul Rahman Senior Narcotics Officer Central Narcotics Bureau The Singapore Public Service | Our security 15 OUR SECURITY MINISTRY OF DEFENCE (MINDEF) SAFEGUARDING SINGAPORE’S PEACE At the core of Singapore’s defence is our people. The Singapore Public Service | Our society 19 Our society MY STORY I started my professional career as a part-time History tutor in Australia, while working towards my PhD. I had always wanted a career closely related to History and teaching seemed like the best thing to do. I taught for many years overseas before finding my way back home to Singapore. When I came back, I was invigorated. Singapore had changed so much while I was away and I wanted to be a part of it. When I joined the National Heritage Board (NHB), I knew I had found my dream job as a historian. I now have the opportunity and resources to conduct research on Singapore’s past and share it with the public. Recently, I even got the chance to work on a project about World War II that helped to fill in the blanks about a lesser-known part of our history. The Public Service has given me an amazing opportunity for professional and personal growth. I know NHB values our work and it is rewarding to know that my contributions to Singapore play a part in preserving our history and identity. Dr John Kwok Assistant Director, Impact Assessment and Mitigation Division National Heritage Board The Singapore Public Service | Our society 21 Our society MY STORY I was a teacher for 50 years and I loved every moment of it. I felt I had found my calling. As a young boy in school, no one really talked about what we should do after graduating. The most exposure we had about careers came from what our parents did in their professions. But with internships being so common today, there are many opportunities for people to find their calling. I was lucky to have found mine. What I am also passionate about is sports. In 1968, I was given the honour of representing Singapore in the Olympics. This experience reinforced why I do what I do. I realised the power and magnitude of sports – it brings us together as a people, as a country and as a planet. Becoming a part of Sport Singapore has given me the opportunity to combine my calling as a teacher with my passion for sports. I get to spread the message of how we can be our best selves through the pursuit of excellence in sports, and remove boundaries we did not know were there. To me, there is no reason why we should not do what we love. I have dedicated my life to my love for people, helping everyone that I meet in any way that I possibly can. We strive to run the nation justly and fairly, with a firm stance against corruption. Read on to learn how you can enable people to reach their potential through effective policy making and implementation. The Singapore Public Service | Our administration and strategic planning 29 Our administration and strategic planning MY STORY My dad worked in the Public Service while I was growing up. He was a Senior Officer in the Fisheries Department at the Primary Production Department, now known as the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore. I remember when he would tell me how important it was to him to do his job well – that everyone in Singapore always had safe food to eat. Perhaps it was my dad who inspired me to work in the Public Service. Doing great and meaningful work that benefits the whole country is what I strive for every day. I majored in Organisational Behaviour in the Faculty of Business Administration at the National University of Singapore. I have always been intrigued by human behaviour and how we interact with one another. Unlike machines, which are “programmable”, human behaviour is complex and based on each individual’s values, experiences and environments. The possibility of designing policies to enable people to work better together appeals to me. This is why I chose to be on the Public Service Division team. Being able to motivate our teams helps me understand how my dad felt working as a public officer, and this has brought me closer to him. If my kids want to carry on the family tradition of Public Service, I would be ecstatic, but I would also want to make sure that they join for the right reasons. Service becomes a big part of your life when you join the Public Service, and we Singaporeans have very high standards. I hope my kids will be up for the challenge. Lim Puay-Sze Director, Human Capital Public Service Division The Singapore Public Service | Our administration and strategic planning 31 Our administration and strategic planning MY STORY My family has always been close, so it was natural for my cousins and I to help look after our grandmother. To spend more time with her, we took turns to help with the household chores and kept her company during the medical appointments. One day, she mentioned that she had not seen one of her friends in a while, so I decided to go check on her friend to see if she was okay. When I did, I found that her friend was mostly by herself and lonely. I realised that not everyone is as lucky as my grandmother to have so many people in their lives who love them. I wanted to help, and I believe the most valuable thing you can give someone is your time. This was when I got involved with Lions Befrienders. It introduces volunteers like me to elderly people who, for one reason or another, do not have many people in their lives. Every week, I visit my adopted grandparents, listen to their stories and make myself a part of their lives. Being with the ministry that keeps Singapore financially sound to ensure our future, and which supports programmes like Lions Befrienders - that’s what keeps me coming in every day.
