Memories of a Respected Man
A name that will be remembered in the Galloway breed is Kenny Paulson, a partner and brother of Shy An Galloway’s of Valley City, ND. Kenny has seen, lived, loved and shared so much about the Galloway breed over the
Greetings Galloway breeders,

Gayle Cerullo (360)675-2379
I have to smile, as I write this article. We are
getting rain, and not snow. This winter has hung on
longer than most all over the country wanted. Last year at this time, we had
grass peeking through. This year, the snow has only settled down to 6 inches.
Granted, it was over 2ft most of the winter. I know I shouldn’t complain about
moisture, as the pastures and hay fields will sure take off when it decides to
warm up.

Jacqueline
Calving has gone well, even with the -20 F temps in February and the
every other day blizzards we had during March. We ran heavy on bull calves,
wanted more heifers, but they are all good and healthy. Some have shorter ears
thanks to Mother Nature, but alive and well. A lesser breed would have
assumed room temperature.
Central Time Zone:
The commercial beef industry interest in Galloway is steadily increasing.
The high grain prices, and the shortage of hay, have producers questioning their
breed of choice. Over the years, cheap grain has allowed producers to feed /
supplement their herds to fit their environment. Now they are leaning towards
finding cattle that fit their environment.
Eastern Time Zone:
years. I don’t know off hand when they started their cattle ranch, but it’s got to be close to 50 years or more.
I would venture to say there probably isn’t a herd of Galloways in the United States or Canada that doesn’t
have their bloodlines someplace in there genetics. Kenny could sit and talk Galloway until “literally” the cows
came home. Many of those bloodlines turned out to become grand champion cattle in the shows throughout
the US and Canada.
He could throw out numbers, dates, weights and bloodlines at the drop of a hat. He was a walking encyclopedia,
much like the Canadian’s Hugh Crawford. They had much different personalities of course, but the same passion for the breed.
I have wonderful memories of Kenny along with Palmer & Maxine, when we would all descend on the ranch. We’d
come for the Winter Show in March or coming and going to The Nile and/or Agribition. He always gave us a
tour of the cattle, then we’d go back to Palmer’s, and Maxine would get us fed and give us a place to sleep on
our way thru North Dakota. Oh the memories I have… for the better part of the years it was the 3 of them.
Kenny came to our place in WI several times, field days, delivered cattle and for World Beef Expo. We would
see him at the Nile, sometimes he would sit quietly and other times he would judge the cattle at the show. You
might not always agree with his choices, but everyone respected his opinions. One of my last memories of him
was judging a show wearing the Galloway vest they owned. I think I will have one made with a hide that we
have to remember him by.
Sometimes after a show we would all be known to sit around a few tables at the War Bonnet having some refreshments and share stories and lots of laughter. He always had some Ole and Lena jokes to share. You had
to laugh with his presentation and that ND accent! He’d usually sit quietly taking it all in and after his two allotted Long Island tea he’d go off to his room. He was the one in the group that knew his limit, some of us
should have followed his lead. Do you remember him being in love with the gal with the short black leather
skirt!!
I just wanted to share what was in my heart for this gentle giant in the Galloway breed and how he has affected my life and maybe yours. My only regret is not keeping in better touch with him and Palmer after they sold
their herd. I can’t make that up, but one day I/we can talk Galloways with him once again. He has touched
many people and given us allot of memories.
Thanks for the memories Kenny…
Zoe Siperly, Kalli-Mon Galloways
Pacific Time Zone:
As Galloway breeders, we can increase demand for our cattle by
continually pushing the feed efficiency and longevity traits our Galloways have.
Cattle prices remain high, so females that can last are very valuable. Galloways
have longevity, remind perspective buyers of this. The carcassing ability and
other valuable traits can be slid in as a bonus to the new owners.
The AGBA continues to see increased registrations and transfers. This
is a sign of good things to come. I have said it before, and I will reiterate the
necessity of advertising what you have. If you don’t feel comfortable with your
own website, look at setting up a Facebook page for your cattle. It is FREE,
and can reach hundreds if not thousands of people. We have had a website for
years now, and it has brought in lots of interest in our operation. We have
posted pictures and other Galloway related material on Facebook, and have
been overwhelmed with “friend” requests. It gets you noticed.
From those I have talked to regarding the production sales in Canada,
everyone seemed pleased with the overall demand and averages of the sales.
I have rambled on long enough. I wish everyone the best of luck
calving, and for a very prosperous 2013.
Promoting Galloways,

A tribute to a Galloway Legend….Kenny Paulson, “Shy An Galloways”
PR Advertising and more
By Deb Vance
NWSS 2013
Thank you to all of the exhibitors at this years NWSS. WOW! Did you see all of the
Galloway Cattle. The largest show in recent history. I can’t thank each and every one of you
enough for your efforts and hard work.
After the hotel fiasco—move’um out & move’um back. The hospitality room was once
again the place to hang out with your fellow breeders and have fun. It is my favorite time; the yards are fun but frequently
cold. A hot meal and a place to unwind is just what the doctor ordered.
We all learned to show the “Scottish way.” Right, wrong or otherwise…..we sort of got the hang of it! The Judge—
John Maxwell—kept telling us “how very honored he was to be in the States and Judge our show.” He had dinner after the
show and visited with all of us in the hospitality room that night. Just a refresher note: Mr. Maxwell owns his favorite Dun
Galloway and Belted Galloway as well. He is a respected & regular Judge at Galloway shows all over “back home.”
I will be attending the All Breed Meeting the end of this month for the 2014 show. Thank you for your judging
nominations, they are due on April 19th as with class changes. The one amendment for this year will be that in the Cow /
calf Pairs—both the cow and calf will be registered or registerable Galloways.
At this time I wish to thank all of the people that donated money for the ABGA Belt Buckles. There were 10
people that we are very pleased to publish an AD in appreciation for their support. It was first seen in the Show Program
and now on the opposite page. If you would like to participate again next year please let me know.
I also need to thank Meagan Stephens for organizing the Youth Show Classes for me and for putting together the
Youth Participation Awards. They were gorgeous and the Youth’s loved them. She also did a very professional presentation of said awards. Thanks again!
Thank you to Kay Castner for all of her support; our
announcer and interpreter Bob Airth; Dawson Masters
& Scott Griffith and Greg Brown, last but not least Twianna Beach who helped with ribbons. These people arrived as
spectators and were gracious enough to lend a hand to make the show happen.
Kenneth Paulson, age 81, of Valley City died Sunday February 17th at his rural Valley City residence. A Memorial
Service will be conducted at 1 PM Saturday Feb. 23rd at Epworth United Methodist church in Valley City with Rev.
Dayne Zachrison officiating. Honorary Pallbearers will be past and present members of the Baldhill Rod and Gun Club
and they are asked to meet at the church 15 minutes prior to services. Military Honors will be rendered by the North
Dakota National Guard Honors Team. Kenneth Lawrence Paulson was born Dec. 8, 1931 at Valley City, ND the son of
Theodore and Olga (Aasland) Paulson. He attended school at Getchell #3 and then did farm and livestock work until
entering the US ARMY in 1952. He was discharged in 1954 and then lived for a time in California before returning to
North Dakota and partnering with his brother Palmer in business. His entire life revolved around farming and
livestock and Kenneth was quite a livestock judge. He traveled to other states and Canada in this capacity. He also
loved to hunt and fish; he was a member of the Baldhill Rod and Gun Club and the club held meetings at his house for
many years. He also was quite proud of his hunting dogs. Kenneth died Sunday at the farm he spent his entire life on.
Survivors include his two brothers, George and Palmer both of Valley City and several nieces and nephews. He was
preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Olga, two brothers Oscar and Robert, and 4 sisters, Belinda, Thelma,
Agnes, and Myrtle.
The Galloway Breed lost one very enthusiastic breeder. Kenny took much pride and so enjoyed his Galloways. If you
were fortunate enough to have met Kenny, you certainly would have heard about his Galloway history. Kenny’s
cattle operation was nestled in the hills near the Sheyenne River by Valley City, ND. His ranch had beautiful, deep
coulees filled with oak trees and hills rolling with waves of grass- perfect for a cattle operation. Kenny and his brother
(Palmer) had a cow/calf operation. Their herd comprised mostly of black Galloways. At one time, they had up to 200
head of Galloway and Galloway cross cattle. They sold seed-stock all over the country, you will find their herd name
in many of the Galloways today.
I can recall Kenny telling us about how his Galloway cattle were never hard on fences; won’t bunch up in the summer
heat when the flies were bad; didn’t have a picky diet- would graze the harsh, undesirable grasses, and were great
mother cows. They were the best you could ever find. He would always say, “those fuzzy headed professors don’t
know how cattle need to work out here.” “ Why would anyone want to raise any other breed.” You would have never
heard an ill word said about his Galloways. I believe he truly missed having those Galloway cattle around after they
sold out in 1998.
Throughout the years, Kenny showed cattle, and attended the Galloway field days, whenever possible. Kenny all
judged Galloway shows at the Canadian Western Agribition and the World Beef Expo.
I have spent countless hours driving Kenny to and from Galloway events and shows. He would say “ You drive, I will
visit with you and keep you awake.” Sometimes it was just him and I, other times we packed into my pickup hauling
Galloways somewhere. Kenny always talked about how it was a good thing my speedometer only went to 85 and not
100, as we lost the needle many times on the way to the NILE and Agribition. He was very concerned the one time
we took Palmer’s car to one of the field days…that speedometer went up to 120 mph.
Little did many of you know, he was quite the horseman. He had many stories about chasing cattle and breaking
horses.
The 2013 Hospitality Room. A great place to “hang out” and
in some ways more important than the whole show! Time with friends!
I can guarantee after spending a few hours with Kenny if you weren’t a true Galloway believer by the time you were
done- there must be something wrong with you!
Remembering a great cattleman and friend to the Galloway breed.
