GLENEAGLES COUNTRY CLUB NEWSLETTER
the new
grille room
OCTOBER 2015
from the BOARD & MANAGEMENT
Dear Members,
Ralph Winer
bog president
Kraig Spina
general
manager
We welcome back many of our members who have been away for the
summer months. With another record breaking year in real estate and
membership sales and the completion of several beautification projects
around the club, we are closing out the 2014-2015 fiscal year on a very
high note.
Real estate sales reached another record high in 2014-2015 with more
than 101 sales closed or pending through October 31. For comparison
purposes, 2013-2014 saw 100 sales, 2012-2013 saw 90 sales, and 20112012 saw 68 sales. The inventory of properties available for sale is also
continuing to decrease with 36 condos and 0 single family homes
currently available for sale.
We hope that you will notice the many improvements that took
place to our physical plant over the summer. In addition to the North
Gate, which was completed earlier in the summer, improvements have
taken place all over the club including a complete interior redesign and
transformation of our Grille Room, installation of pavers and landscaping
in our golf complex, locker room enhancements at the Tennis Center,
and several projects in our satellite clubhouses and satellite pools. The
Board and Management is proud to report that these projects were all
completed using existing capital funds and without an assessment to the
membership.
2015 marks the first time in recent years that the club remained open all
summer without a club closure, which typically takes place every summer for
two weeks and allows for deep cleaning and completion of capital projects
such as the ones we described above. We appreciate the members’ patience
and understanding as we completed the above projects.
The Phase II Planning Process continues to progress on schedule.
In August, the club launched an exploratory survey to gather member
opinion regarding the upcoming facility improvements and Healthy
Lifestyle program components. A final report of the survey findings will
be available at the end of September. At the time of printing, over 550
members had completed the survey. A scope of project, timeline, and
budget have not been established.
Roundtable meetings will continue to be held throughout the fall
to discuss relevant club happenings with our General Manager, Board
Members and leadership staff. Contact Varto Hairanian at vhairanian@
gleneagles.cc or 561-498-3606 ext.131 to sign up for the next date.
The 2015-2016 Budget preparations are well underway and the budget
will be approved at the October Open Board of Governors meeting on
Thursday, October 22, 2015. All members will receive a copy of the 20152016 budget inserted into their October 31 club statement.
We are looking forward to a very successful 2015-2016 season. The
various club departments are planning a tremendous schedule of events
and activities that we hope will create the best member experience possible.
Thank you for making Gleneagles Country Club a wonderful place
to live and play!
Respectfully yours,
Ralph Winer, President
Kraig Spina, General Manager

Food for thought...
It’s hard to believe another summer has come and
gone.
Thanks to all the members that have kept our
dining rooms full and the staff busy for the last few
months. As the season approaches, it is always exciting
to see the familiar faces coming back to the club. Your
food and beverage staff has been working hard on
exciting new menus and operating schedules for the

general
yet. To accommodate what we anticipate will be a very
manager
busy season, we have recruited 20 international staff
members and you will be pleased to know that ten of
them will be familiar faces from past years.
As you can see by the calendar, October is our transitional month as
we gear up for the season. Sunday, October 4, we have a Burger & Brew
night in the newly renovated Grille Room, always a member favorite.
Wednesday, October 7 and 21, there will be entertainment in the Lounge
for your enjoyment, and many options throughout the month for dining
in our three venues.
The month ends on Saturday, October 31 with our Halloween Dinner
Dance featuring Will Bridges. It promises to be a fun-filled night and
guests are welcome to this event.
Don’t forget to support your favorite team at Football Sundays in the
Glen every Sunday. Lunch is also offered from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm in the
Grille and Glen along with our beautiful Sunday Brunch in the main
dining room from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.
Thanksgiving lottery slips are due by Monday, October 26, and we
look forward to hosting you and your family and friends on this busy day.
Dress code is jackets required, ties optional.
As your summer travels wind down and you return to Gleneagles,
keep in mind that we welcome your comments and suggestions and
again thank you for supporting the club.
Cheers!

October 2015
Wow! It is hard to believe that we are already in the month of
October! We had a wonderful summer and we are ready for some
super golf in the upcoming season.
The summer months provide the maintenance staff with the
opportunity to prepare the course for the upcoming season, and
the professional staff with the opportunity to plan the tournament,
event, and merchandise schedule for the months ahead. The summer
also gave our maintenance team the opportunity to transform the
staging area with the installation of beautiful pavers.
The reciprocal program has been very well received by our members
as well as the members of reciprocal clubs playing here. Several of our
reciprocal club arrangements will remain in effect through the end of
October, so please take advantage of them before October 31.
October marks the beginning of deliveries of new apparel and
equipment in the Golf Shop. Please stop in and check out all of the new
arrivals! We will be receiving new merchandise each month, including
a lot of great clothing from all of the top golf apparel manufacturers.
The new golf orientation video will be released in early November.
The video is intended to help all of our golf members maximize
their enjoyment and satisfaction on the golf courses and ensure that
every golf experience is a good one! Pace of play, raking a bunker,
and even repairing divots are so important to the overall experience
and with 46,000 rounds of golf played on our courses each year,
these routine tasks are critical to the upkeep of our beautiful golf
courses. Thank you in advance for your support.
We look forward to the return of our members who spent the
summer away from Gleneagles. If there is anything that the golf staff
can do to make your arrival back to the club easier, please let us know!
As seasons change, you
may encounter challenges with
different types of grass and
many different types of lies.
You need to figure out what
will be the best shot and most
importantly, which club to use.
My advice is to always use your
favorite club! Sometimes we
need to be creative around the
green, and we might need to
use a high loft shot at certain
times and a low running shot
at others. This is where you
need to trust those different
clubs for different shots. Take
advantage of your 60 degree
sand wedge for the loft and
the “bump and run” to get
the ball on the ground and
let it roll to the hole. Watch
the pros and you will see they
use different clubs at different
times to help the ball go
higher or run more with just a
little swing. Stop in the Golf
Shop and any member of our
professional staff will be happy
to discuss the shots that help
you score better. – Joe

It has been a great summer with a lot of improvement projects
taking place at the club and I’m looking forward to a wonderful
upcoming season with great events and tournaments. I have a
couple of quick reminders to keep in mind when you return to
the club:
• When you arrive, stop in the Pro Shop and fill out your
reccurring request form to get your routine weekly games
in the Chelsea system.
• All handicap flag users will need to renew their privileges
each year by providing a Driver’s License and state-issued
handicap placard.
If anyone is in need of help with accessing and navigating the
Chelsea Tee Time Website or GolfNet Handicap Website, please
feel free to stop by and see me at the Golf Pro Shop.

UNFORCED ERRORS
VERSUS WINNERS
Everyone loves to hit that screaming winner
down the line past the net player to the
applause of the crowd, but how often can you
make this shot?
Pros will typically have a 60:40 error-towinner ratio, while club players are as high
as 80:20. This is not surprising since 75% of
points of club tennis end in an error; a definite
reason why consistency will win matches.
The goal is to limit this gap and DON’T
MISS while going for winners when the
opportunity presents. We do not want to be
ultra safe and only get the ball back. While
the “pusher” style of play may drive your
opponent crazy and win matches, it takes
forever to play the match and is void of the
enjoyment of playing aggressively.
The key is to be selective in choosing the
moment to try a winner while remaining
consistent enough to not give the match away
on errors. If you return 5 balls over the net
during a point, you will win most matches you
play. Go for the shots when they are there
and play defensive when you feel pressured.
Managing your errors will win the match for
you, and sprinkling in those winners will make
it even more fun. –Mike

Tips for Improving Your Health
KAREN MIKUS fitness supervisor
We are very excited about the many new programs we’ll be introducing
as part of our Healthy Lifestyle initiative, and there is no better time than
the present to get started. Here are a few general ideas on improving your
overall health and well-being, organized below under Nutrition/Diet, Cardio
Exercise, Strength Exercise, Balance and Stress.
Nutrition/Diet: Good health comes from eating a well-balanced diet.
• Eat 2-3 servings of fruits and greater than 6 vegetables everyday.
• Cut back on bad fats such as butter, margarine, salad dressing and
turn to better fats.
• Eat baked, grilled and broiled foods rather than fried foods. Take
skin off before eating chicken or turkey. Eat fish at least twice a week.
Make sure you are choosing lean protein.
• Eat high fiber, low sugar foods daily, in the form of grains & legumes.
• Stay away from sugar-sweetened drinks such as juices, fruit drinks,
and soft drinks, which can add lots of sugar and calories to your diet.
• Hydration is key for mental health and detoxing. Drink ½ your body
weight. Eg: If you weigh 160 pounds, please drink 80 ounces per day,
gradually.
• If you want to lose weight, reduce your meal portion by 20%. We live
in a country of Portion Distortion.
If your doctor has talked to you about a medical problem or risk factor, such as high blood
pressure or high cholesterol, please consult with your doctor about changes to your diet.
Exercise: For heart health, the American Heart Association recommends
at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity, such as walking, on
most days of the week. If you are just starting out, try 5 or 10 minutes, then
increase time as you build your endurance. You are definitely going to see
benefits even at 5 or 10 minutes of moving around.
Strength Training: Come into the Fitness Center for guidance in starting a
strength training program. Twice a week is recommended for building strength.
Balance: The Fitness Center offers Sit-to-Be-Fit classes every week that
have balance exercises included. Another option is to talk to one of the
personal trainers.
Stress: Yoga class is a great way to deal with stress. You might also want to
try our new meditation class that will be introduced in November.

At the Bridge Table by art goldman
♠ ♥
We should all realize how important it is to maintain our balance and
avoid falls. No, this is not a fitness article! In Bridge, balancing often is the
difference betwen a good or a poor result.
The player whose pass would end the auction, East in the hand above,
♦ ♣
is said to be in the balancing position. What should East do? I found myself
in this position in a match point game recently. Obviously my hand was not
very strong.
What about the other hands? South was limited to seventeen points. North
had at least five Hearts, possibly six, but not enough strength to consider a
return to two no-trump. North must be quite weak but with enough hearts to feel the hand
would play better in the suit.
My partner should have enough strength to give us almost half the high cards.
I decided to balance with two spades and the auction then proceeded as follows:
S-pass, W-pass, N-3Hearts, E-pass, S-pass, W-3Spades, N-pass, E-pass, S-Double, all pass.
As you can see, three spades is cold, and in the actual play I managed to take a tenth trick
for a top board.
When should you consider balancing? Usually if your opponents are willing to play at
a low level (one or two) your side can make something. If the vulnerability is equal or
favorable it is often safe to balance.
How should you balance? If you have a biddable suit, bid it. If you are short in the opponent’s
suit, double for takeout. With a balanced hand with one or more stoppers in the opponent’s
suit bid no-trump. At the one level this bid shows 11 to 14 points! With more, double and then
bid no-trump. Remember, in bridge as in life it is important to keep your balance.

Computer Club News by ...
Another Computer Club season begins on Monday, October 19 with our
General Meeting at 3:00 pm in the Strathearn Satellite, open to all residents.
Mark your calendar. Workshops begin Monday, November 2 and are held in
the Computer Center, Lomond Hills Satellite. Schedules and Registration are
available on our website, http://gleneaglescomputer.org. Our new site is now
easily accessible by any digital device, be it a PC, iPhone, iPad, Android
or Chromebook. Send us your comments.
Windows 10 was released in July and Microsoft has offered a free upgrade for existing
Windows 7 or 8.1 computers and phone devices for one year from purchase. All reports
indicate that “10” operates comfortably and is worth having. Microsoft will continue to keep
Windows 10 computers up to date for the supported life of the device, all at no charge.
Contact Microsoft for upgrade details.
Question: Do you practice safe computing? Is your computer protected and are your data
and passwords safe? Do you have the latest anti-virus and anti-malware software protection?
If not, you need to safeguard your computer against the increasingly active junk going
around. Every day we hear of a new scam. Many programs such as AVG or Malwarebytes
are available on the Internet for free or purchase. If you purchase it, you will get a much
stronger protection with “forever” updates.
Gleneagles Golfers know about the ThorGuard lightning radar detection system. Any lightning
within 10 miles causes a “red” alert and a long blast on the golf course sirens. You can view the
status of the system with any digital device, including a weather “map” showing all of South Florida.
Visit the site at http://gleneaglescc.thormobile7.net and bookmark it for future reference.
Reminder, if you have overlooked it, club dues are $20 per family beginning on Sept. 1,
and can be left for the Computer Club at the Concierge Desk in the main lobby. Paid up
membership is required for workshop attendance.

Reclaimed Water Notice
The Palm Beach County Water Utilities Department Regulatory Compliance Office
has requested that we publish the following information regarding the reclaimed water
Gleneagles currently uses to irrigate our Golf Course and Common Areas.
Reclaimed water is recycled water that has been treated, filtered and disinfected.
The final product exceeds state and federal standards for irrigation quality water and is
distributed to customers through a distribution system totally separate from the drinking
water system. Reclaimed water can be safely used only for irrigation. The treatment process
eliminates harmful substances but leaves traces of nitrogen and phosphorus that act as
fertilizers when reclaimed water is applied to lawns and landscapes.
Reclaimed water is treated to extremely stringent standards and its quality is overseen
by federal, state and local regulatory agencies. While reclaimed water is not intended for
human or animal consumption, it poses no threat from accidental contact. It’s always a
good idea, however, to wash hands thoroughly after contact with reclaimed water, especially
before preparing food.
How to use Reclaimed Water
Reclaimed water can be used to:
• Irrigate residential lawns
• Irrigate community landscape
• Irrigate golf courses
How not to use Reclaimed Water
Do not use reclaimed water to:
• Quench your thirst - or your pet’s
• Fill your swimming pool or spa
• Replace drinking water uses anywhere including inside your home
Money Wiring Scams by rick white, director of security
Wiring money is like sending cash. Do not wire money to people you
do not know. How do I spot a money wiring scam?
Most money wiring scams look like this: Someone you do not know
asks you to wire money. A Scammer might use different ways to convince
you to wire money. The scammer might say: You won a prize, or inherited
money, but you have to pay fees first; You won the lottery, but you have
to pay some taxes first; A friend or family member is in trouble and
needs you to send money to help; You need to pay for something you just
bought online before they send it; You got a check for too much money
and need to send back the extra. These are all tricks. When you hear stories
like these, you have spotted a money wire scam.
How do I avoid a money wiring scam? Scammers are good at being
friendly. They also are good at fooling people. Here is how you can stop
scammer: Never wire money to someone you do not know. Never wire
money because someone contacted you, even if you feel like you know
the person, and even if the person says he is your friend or related to you
What if you already wired money to someone? If you sent money to
someone who contacted you, report it to the Federal Trade Commission
(FTC). Call the FTC at 1-877-382-4357 or go online: ftc.gov/complaint
The FTC uses complaints to build cases against scammers. Any
information you can give helps investigators.

Welcome, Executive Sous Chef Jason Prevatt!
Jason Prevatt joined the culinary team in August of
2015 as the Executive Sous Chef.
He began his training at an early age learning
under his father, a working chef in his home town
of Jacksonville, Florida. Once he reached the age of
16, he began his career working in a variety of local
restaurants in the Jacksonville area. He received his
first big break when he joined the culinary team at
the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club, where he worked for 10 years refining his art. Afterwards, he
traveled to Ireland where he opened the Forge, an American-style chophouse. In 2006, he
came to Miami to work in the famed La Goulue, Bal Harbor and most recently worked for
the Loews Hotel in South Beach as Chef de Cuisine.
Jason has a passion for local agriculture and has a deep love for the ocean and
watersports. Jason spends his downtime with his wife Helen and daughter Ella. Jason is a
great conversationalist and looks forward to getting to know the membership at Gleneagles.

Gleneagles: A great place to live and work!
Our members know that Gleneagles
is a wonderful place to live, but it is also a
wonderful place for our employees to work.
Gleneagles currently employs a staff of 214
year-round employees and adds an additional
40 employees on a seasonal basis. Our yearround employees have been at Gleneagles
on average for 8.54 years. This is quite an
accomplishment for Gleneagles compared
to the industry standard of 2.3 years for
private sector workers in the Leisure and
Hospitality industries as reported by the
U.S. Department of Labor in 2014. Not only
are we proud that Gleneagles has such a
positive variance from the norm, but we are
also proud of the fact that our full time staff
tenure is represented as follows:
•
•
•
8 employees = over 25 years
15 employees = 20 - 24 years
28 employees = 15 - 19 years
•
•
26 employees = 10 - 14 years
49 employees = 5 - 9 years
Gleneagles is proud to recognize Lavy
Marcelus and Scott Kerezman who are
at the top of the seniority, having been
with Gleneagles Country Club for 27
years each. Lavy is a Foreman in our Golf
Course Maintenance Department and Scott
Kerezman is our IT Director.
Although Gleneagles will always hire the
most qualified candidate for a position, the
club takes pride in training and preparing all
employees for potential advancement at the
club. Gleneagles is pleased to congratulate
several employees on recent promotions.
Jason Hembree – Executive Chef
Steve Burns – Purchasing Manager
Steven Maldonado – Receiving Agent
Nicole Collister – F & B Administrator
The dedication our staff has to
our members is evident throughout
Gleneagles. It is seen in the exceptional
service that our F&B/Culinary, Accounting,
Member Services, Golf, Fitness and Tennis
departments provide to our members on an
ongoing basis. It is evident in the beautiful
courses that are maintained perfectly by our
Golf Course Maintenance team. It is seen
in the beautifully preserved landscaping
that our Common Area Maintenance crew
is constantly at work on, and in the way
that our Housekeeping team keeps our
clubhouses and surrounding areas always
pristine. Our employees are proud to work
at Gleneagles for many reasons, but at the
top is the wonderful working environment
that our members help to provide our staff.
