HBMS eighth graders collaborate on
Butterfly Project
Eighth graders at Hudson Bend Middle School showcased their creativity and their
love of learning with the Butterfly Project, a colorful and poignant showcase of art
pieces they created based on poetry they studied that commemorated children who
passed in the Holocaust. All of the students’ butterflies are currently displayed in Hudson Bend’s sky bridge for faculty and visitors to view.
To prepare the eighth graders for the Butterfly Project, students learned about the
events surrounding WWII with a Holocaust Webquest, digital timelines, QR codes,
and historical allegories in children’s literature. Eighth graders also read Anne Frank’s
The Diary of a Young Girl and explored an interactive online annex simulation before
viewing the cities Anne Frank’s family visited through Google Earth. The butterflies will
be on display through the end of December.
Former NSA director to speak at Veterans Day
event at LTISD PAC
Ret. U.S. Navy Admiral Bobby R. Inman will be the guest speaker at the City of Lakeway’s Veterans Day ceremony to be held at 11 a.m., November 11 at the Lake Travis
Independent School District’s Performing Arts Center.
The community is encouraged to hear Inman address “National Security Challenges
Facing the U.S.” in the free event.
“We are pleased to host this event for the Lake Travis community,” said Dr. Brad Lancaster, LTISD Superintendent of Schools. “We look forward to honoring our veterans
on their special day, and furthermore, to providing our students with an incredible opportunity to experience an event that will abound in unique lessons in honor, respect
and patriotism for the greatest country in the world.”

Raising the roof
The Lake Travis High School cheer and student council programs gave new
meaning to the word ‘homecoming,’ helping to raise more than $5200 on
campus for Mobile Loaves and Fishes during Homecoming 2014 last month.
In all, the fundraiser collected nearly $16,000 to build two homes for homeless
persons at the Mobile Loaves & Fishes Community First! Village, a 27-acre
master-planned community designed to lift the disabled, chronically homeless
off the streets by providing permanent, affordable and sustainable housing
and caring support. Pictured are (left to right): Patrick Hinson, LTHS student
council faculty sponsor; Kimberly Brents, LTHS principal; Gillian Gates,
LTHS sophomore and project coordinator; and Sarah Boettcher representing
Mobile Loaves and Fishes.

Nearly 200 string players from the Eanes, Pflugerville and Lake Travis school
districts filled the Hill Country Galleria amphitheater on November 4 for the
First Annual Stringapalooza. Although the final performance was rained out,
the event provided area students with an opportunity to build camaraderie and
showcase their musical talents. The event was hosted by Charles Aguillon
and the Lake Travis ISD Fine Arts Department. Special thanks go out to the
LTISD orchestra staff including Anna Macias, Lake Travis High School; Michael Werst, Lake Travis Middle School; and Man May, Hudson Bend Middle
School.

high growth rate scenario, demographers estimate
the District will be built out, or at full capacity, by
2025 with a projected enrollment of 18,000 students.
In August 2014, Lake Travis schools recorded a
total enrollment of more than 8,800 students. An
updated demographic report is scheduled to be
released in Spring 2015.
Lake Travis Independent School District officials
have accepted approximately a 12-acre tract in
Rough Hollow Lakeway for a future school site.
The unanimous approval of the donation occurred
at the October 21 regular meeting of the LTISD
school board. A deed signing ceremony to commemorate the agreement was held at the site of the
future elementary campus on October 30 between
LTISD, City of Lakeway and Rough Hollow Lakeway
officials.
“It seems fitting to donate this land to something so
near and dear to my heart,” said Haythem Dawlett,
partner at Rough Hollow Lakeway.”
The donated site, valued at approximately $1.5
million, is located near the intersection of Bee Creek
Road and Highlands Boulevard in Lakeway. Contingent upon student growth and the successful passage of a future bond referendum, district officials
project construction of an elementary campus in
Rough Hollow may begin in 2018 or 2019.
“This is a great day for LTISD,” said Dr. Brad Lancaster, Lake Travis ISD Superintendent of Schools.
“Haythem has a long history of philanthropic contributions which have directly impacted our students,
our teachers and our schools. However, none is
likely greater than this donation. It is a critical first
step in a process that will ultimately help us meet
our continued increase in student enrollment. We
are very grateful to Haythem and his partners.”

A demographic report commissioned by LTISD and
released in 2011 indicates enrollment is increasing
by approximately 300 to 400 students—roughly 6
to 7 percent—annually. Since 2004, student enrollment has increased by 62 percent. Considering a

also reflects the support and commitment of their
parents who are instrumental to their success.”
Lake Travis High School (LTHS) principal Kimberly
Brents is pleased to announce that 24 seniors have
been recognized by the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Earlier this month, approximately two-thirds of the
50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT received
letters of commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Commended students
are named on the basis of a nationally applied
index score that may vary from year to year. The
remaining one-third of these students were then
notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists and
are eligible to receive a National Merit Scholarship.
Semifinalists advance to Finalist standing in the
competition by meeting high academic standards
and all other requirements.
These students entered the program by taking the
Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) as high school juniors in 2013.
They were chosen from more than 1.5 million program entrants and represent less than one percent
of each state’s high school seniors. According to
the National Merit Scholarship Program, these students are the top scorers from each state and show
exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Additionally, the
National Hispanic Recognition Program identifies
nearly 5,000 outstanding Hispanic/Latino students
each year, while the National Achievement Scholarship Program provides recognition for outstanding
Black American high school students.
In February 2015, some 15,000 Semifinalists will be
notified by mail that they have advanced to Finalist
standing.

“We are very proud of these students for their
remarkable achievements,” said Kimberly Brents,
LTHS principal. “Our students continue to raise the
bar on academic excellence. Their success not
only reflects the quality and caliber of our teachers
and staff who directly impact student learning, it
