Over a decade ago, Excelerate Energy saw the need for a
cost-efficient, fast-track solution for the importation of LNG
and introduced the concept of onboard regasification of
LNG. Since bringing floating regasification to market, our

FSRU: Overview
An FSRU is an LNG carrier with the onboard
capability to regasify LNG into natural gas
• Mode of operation depends on environmental
conditions
− Open-loop vaporization uses sea water as the
heating medium
− Closed-loop uses a recirculating loop for freshwater
onboard, heated by ship’s systems
• Excelerate’s FSRUs are flexible, allowing for
conventional LNG loading with discharge:

− As liquid at a conventional receiving terminal
− As gas through a high-pressure gas manifold
− As gas through a subsea buoy system

Mooring Options
Typically, an FSRU is permanently moored to
a docking facility at a location close to a
market access point.
• Infrastructure is tailored to fit specific project
requirements
• Excelerate offers two basic solutions, although
others (including spread mooring) can be done

• Geography and ocean conditions largely dictate

A GasPort is a dockside regasification configuration either at or near shore.
• A range of configurations are available to allow implementation of fast-track solutions in a variety of
environmental conditions
• Installation time ranges from 9 to 12 months, depending on site complexity and tie-in requirements

Excelerate pioneered LNG ship-to-ship (STS) transfer,
which maximizes the capabilities of FSRUs by allowing
for a uninterrupted supply of natural gas to market.

Excelerate’s FSRUs discharge high-pressure
natural gas to shore via pipeline in one of
two manners
• GasPort: Gas is discharged via high-pressure gas
offloading arm, with no cryogenic piping required
on jetty
• Gateway: Gas is discharged through a subsea
buoy linked to a subsea pipeline
• Wide range of throughput available – from as little
as 50 mmcfd to over 1.2 bcfd
