All charitable gifts to Saint
Mary’s must be postmarked
December 31, 2007 or earlier to
be considered a 2007 charitable
contribution. The IRS considers
any gift with a later postmark to

W
hat happens when you bring more than 70 women from diverse
backgrounds together to support other women and their health issues?
What happens when you bring an energetic group of young professionals together to create
an event that raises funds for innovative health programs?
What happens with you decide to share your artistic talents to bring happiness to those
undergoing complicated medical treatments?
People heal faster. Programs are improved. New buildings rise to meet the medical needs of
our community.
That’s what happens. And it’s happening at Saint Mary’s Health Care. Continued on page 6 Saint Mary’s

DEAR FRIENDS,
As we announced the recent $500,000 gift to The Hauenstein Center from the
Saint Mary’s Doran Foundation on November 1, I reflected on the number of
times in the past few years that I have been privileged to be involved in the
philanthropy at Saint Mary’s.
In the past nine years alone, we have announced thousands of gifts (in the
example of The Hauenstein Center, more than 900) in all amounts for Saint
Mary’s projects, from large buildings, to state-of-the-art technology, to
programs and for scholarships. Because philanthropy plays such a key role in so
many of our projects, we sometimes take it for granted: it’s always been there.

We at Saint Mary’s are so fortunate to have such loyal and generous donors,
from our community friends, foundations, our associates at Saint Mary’s, and
our physicians. Philanthropy is part of our nature; to use a medical term, it’s in
our Saint Mary’s DNA.
Thank you for your gifts to our wonderful organization. You have played a role in
creating the culture of philanthropy that enables us to build the buildings, invest
in the technology, and create the programs that change lives and saves lives.
In gratitude,

The Hauenstein Center
Campaign Milestone
C
onstruction of The Hauenstein
Center is proceeding on schedule
and the fund raising campaign is
nearing completion. On November 1,
donors celebrated with a traditional beam
signing ceremony as the last steel beam
was put into place for the $60 million
building on the Saint Mary’s Health Care
main campus.
More than 75 major supporters and Saint
Mary’s associates who gave at the highest
leadership level were the first to hear that
the Meijer Foundation recently made a
significant gift and the Saint Mary’s Doran
Foundation made a $500,000 commitment
toward the campaign.
“Contributions are still coming in, and we’re
waiting for a very few final decisions on
some gifts, ” commented Michelle
Rabideau, Executive Director of the Saint
Mary’s Doran Foundation. “We’re ready to
install the last beam, and this is a great
time to celebrate and to offer an insider’s
tour of the facility.”
Lead donor of the project Ralph
Hauenstein was the first to sign the beam
and exclaimed, “It now appears that we
have the finest neuroscience center in the
United States.”

A Grand Award
T
his year, Grand Girlfriends awarded
their first grant to The Lacks Cancer
Center to purchase plush robes for
women patients to wear during radiation
treatment.
“You can imagine how much better this
will make our patients feel to wear these
robes instead of the typical hospital
gowns,” stated Katina Wood, Clinical
Manager for The Lacks Cancer Center.
At the annual Grand Reception held in
September, Grand Girlfriends presented
one of the robes to a current patient who
expressed gratitude as she announced
that she was completing her radiation
treatment the following week.
How grand is that?
RIGHT: Micki Benz, Barb Herr, Deb Bailey and Lisa Wurst
at a Grand Girlfriends’ event hosted by Linda McInerney.
Did you know that being a member
of Grand Girlfriends is good for you?
A famed study from the Harvard Medical School found that the more
friends women have, the less likely they would develop health problems as
they aged. And that’s not all. The study showed that women with more
friends led more joyful lives.
Simply put: girlfriends are good for your health.
And now, girlfriends can help improve the health of other women by
joining a group that’s created quite a buzz — Grand Girlfriends.
Last year, Grand Girlfriends was created to bring women together to
support programs and services that improve the health and enhance
the lives for women served by Saint Mary’s Health Care. In just the first
year, 70 women joined this group and you can, too.

The Power of Giving
(CONTINUED FROM FRONT COVER)
F
rom Grand Girlfriends to the art and music that fills our
hallways to Up on the Roof, the power of giving is stronger
than ever at Saint Mary’s.
Giving can come in many forms. You can hear volunteers such as
Frances Ellis give the gift of music as she delights patients, visitors
and staff with her talents by playing the grand piano in the lobby
of The Lacks Cancer Center.
You can attend one of our signature events and mingle with the
who’s who in Grand Rapids and support unique programs such as
pet-assisted therapy for our patients.
You can see the evidence of volunteers Judy Lacks and Rosalind
Ebrom who are filling the hospital and patient rooms with original
art that enhances the healing experience for all.
Giving is powerful and makes an extraordinary impact on those
patients and their families whom we serve every day.
Make a gift to Saint Mary’s and be a part of it all.

majority of her time in Florida.

niece of Dr. Frank Doran,” noted Paul Farr, MD, Chair, Saint
Mary’s Doran Foundation. “She has a special connection to our

hat is your intuition telling you? It may be
telling you that you would like to sip
Champagne, indulge in trendy cuisine, be
swept onto the dance floor or be seen in the
ultra cool Wolverine Lounge.
Guests followed their instinct and trusted their intuition at
the annual Saint Mary’s Gala by enjoying all that was
offered at the event…and something more.
On Saturday, November 10, 2007, Saint Mary’s Southwest
— our refreshingly new health care facility — was transformed into a show-stopping venue. More than 650
guests helped raise more than $160,000 net proceeds for
the Tom and Mickie Fox & Family Center for Advanced
Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery, which will be
located at our downtown campus.
“The décor looked like something
out of New York … I wouldn’t expect
anything less from this event.”
The da Vinci Surgical System is one of the highlights of
this new Center that boasts minimally invasive surgery
procedures as the wave of the future. And the robot was
one of the highlights at the Gala where guests donned
surgery masks and explored the features of this state-ofthe-art technology.

“The purchase of the da Vinci robot has truly changed how we

us on the forefront of that wave,” Dr. Wright stated. “Because of
this, the Medical Staff at Saint Mary’s would like to officially

Time Is Running Out!
There’s still time to make your gift during this
tax year.
C
ongress passed a new bill that allows
older taxpayers to donate up to
$100,000 from their Individual
Retirement Accounts (IRAs) tax-free to a
charitable organization.
The new bill covers such gifts in any tax year
after December 31, 2005 and before January 1,
2008.
Individuals aged 70? or older may make a
gift up to $100,000 from his or her IRA
directly to charity without it counting as
adjusted gross income or toward charitable
contribution limits, which could simplify
personal taxes.
Talk with your financial planner to see if this
could be an option for you to consider making
a gift to Saint Mary’s.
For more information, please contact Michelle
Rabideau, Executive Director, Saint Mary’s
Doran Foundation, at (616) 913.1889.

O
n September 6, 2007, The Lacks Cancer Center rooftop party,
which has gained a reputation as being the place to be seen,
raised more than $26,000 for the pet-assisted therapy program
at Saint Mary’s Health Care. The party attracted more than 250
guests including Mayor George and Susan Heartwell, Peter and
Joan Secchia, Ralph Hauenstein, Peter Cook, John and Marie
Canepa — just to drop some names — and a young, dynamic group that many
are calling the next generation in this community.
“The crowd is really eclectic and the energy at this party is incredible,” exclaimed
Michael Hoffman, who contributed a coveted pearl and crystal necklace from
Hoffman Jewelers for the Cool Cat silent auction.
