Lessons Learned from a Lifetime of Wilderness Travel,
Game Leading and Classroom Teaching
Seldom does one have the opportunity to spend seven weeks
“alone” in a remote Canadian wilderness…. or to lead thousands
of students into the back country to paddle, hike, fish, camp,
bike, climb or to sleep in the snow…..or to play and create highly
effective team building and group games that were developed
over a 37 year teaching career. In the course of those moments
and years, numerous lessons have been learned. Many of those
lessons are seldom discussed. Please join Dr. Mike as he shares
his unique stories and the lessons that he has learned!
Lessons Learned Include: Humor, Silence, Listening, Honoring
the Earth, Visions/Reality, Aging, Active Healthy Lifestyle, Teamwork, Happiness and Leadership.

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS
Practice Pool Manament Plus (PPM+) Certification
Saturday, February 4 and Sunday, February 5
8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Fees: $295 without the full conference, $245 if also registered as a full
conference attendee at a regular conference rate (no additional discounts may apply) – Fee includes course text (CSPR, 3rd Edition), workbook, exam and certification (for those with a passing exam grade).
Instructor: Shawn DeRosa, JD DeRosa Aquatics
Practical Pool Management Plus is a fast-paced two-day pool operator training program that offers an in-depth analysis of swimming
pool and spa operations, maintenance and management. This course
moves beyond traditional calculations and mathematics to provide
the pool operator not only the basics of circulation, filtration, water
quality, chemical adjustments, safety and risk management but also
a comprehensive approach to managing an aquatic facility in accordance with the latest industry standards and best practices. Specific
references to the Model Aquatic Health Code and the state of Florida’s
sanitation and safety standards for public pools (Chapter 64E-9) are
included in the course. Recognized by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the
PPM+ training program meets or exceeds pool operator training requirements in virtually every state.* Certification, valid for five years,
is available to those who pass the written exam with a score of 75%
of better. Successful participants will receive a certificate suitable for
framing and will be entered into a database of pool operators certified
through the Aquatic Safety Research Group, LLC.
Why not take a pool operator course from one of the experts who
helped write the book? Developed and taught by Shawn DeRosa, a
contributing author of The Complete Swimming Pool Reference (3rd
Edition), the interactive PPM+ presentation incorporates multimedia technologies to enhance the learning process making this
course ideal for both novice and experienced pool operators alike. *This course is approved by the Florida Department of Health for student certification as a Public Pool Service Technician under Chapter
514, F.S., and Chapter 64E-9, F.A.C. Additional state approvals may be
found at http://www.derosaaquatics.com/statepoolcodes.html Aquatic Risk Management

Instructors: Dr. Tom Griffiths and Rachel Griffiths, Aquatic Safety Consultants
The popular Aquatic Risk Management (ARM) Seminar developed by
the Aquatic Safety Research Group will be taught again by Dr. Tom
Griffiths and Rachel Griffiths, MA.
The seminar focuses on both basic and advanced elements of risk
management in the aquatic environment including pools, water parks
and beaches. This program has also been offered at state insurance
pools around the country.
Some of the topics include
1. Avoiding negligence and meeting the Standard of Care
2. Preventing Catastrophic Aquatic Injuries
3. Effective Aquatic Risk Management Techniques including the 5/30
Model of Aquatic Accountability
4. The Complex Quadriplex of Lifeguard Blindness
5. Lifeguard Freezing: The Drowning Ds
6. The Note and Float Drowning Prevention Program
7. New Safety Signage Strategies
Most of these seven topics were researched and developed by the
Aquatic Safety Research Group and are exclusive and unique to this
ARM Seminar. Much of the information presented simply cannot be
found elsewhere.
Cutting edge lifeguard videos, actual drowning videos, and summaries
of actual court cases and aquatics will also be included with the major
topics.
The program is very interactive, encouraging Q&A concerning any areas of water safety that attendees would like to discuss. No topics too
small or too controversial to discuss. An ARM certificate will be given to each participant as well as a free
new video concerning Lifeguard Blindness.

This AOAP pre-conference offers an opportunity to learn how to better serve the special needs population. This seminar will teach you
pool activities and strategies for overcoming roadblocks commonly
seen with this population. We will educate you using power point presentation with video clips, equipment suggestions, properties of the
water and movement progressions to gain success.
In this workshop you will learn strategies from each our two programs. The Swim Whisperer education is for swimmers with Autism
and Sensory challenges. Our Adapted Swim Angels education is for
swimmers with motor difficulties and physical challenges. As swim
instructors and Occupational and Physical Therapists for some of the
most challenging physical and sensory impaired children for over 20
years, we have developed a methodology that allows any qualified
swim instructor to use our techniques. Our time tested techniques
and methodology will seamlessly integrate into any swim curriculum.
If you leave the seminar wanting more education you can explore
our Swim Angelfish license agreement. Through the Master Instructor curriculum we will teach and certify your aquatic team members
to facilitate less stressful, more inclusive lessons for children who are
the most challenging in the water. We are forming a strategic alliance
with aquatic professionals, to be the professional vendor for all special needs swim education and training. Together we will decrease
the drowning statistics and teach lessons with less discomfort than
traditional methods.

through a typical work day to help them connect important concepts
to real-world practice. Participants will work through interactive scenarios based around situations they’re likely to face on the job.
All Conference attendees are encouraged to attend the general session that is being co-hosted by AOAP and Starfish Aquatics. Please

after the course is completed.
Monday, March 7 from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm in California Room
Do you want to be recognized as an Aquatic Professional within the
aquatic industry? Then this designation is for you. Through a combination of education, experience and training you may be recognized
as an AqP. The AOAP Conference is the perfect place to earn CEU’s
towards this designation and attend the 4 CORE requirement sessions.
Qualifying sessions will be marked in the final conference booklet. Additional information may be found at:
http://www.aquaticpros.org/aquatic-professional-designation
***** All registrants will take part in an on-line portion of the course
prior to the conference. The AquaTech online course will teach you
how pool systems work and how to maintain them, as well as how to
diagnose, prevent, and solve common pool care troubles. You’ll also
find information on reducing risk and increasing safety at your facility.
After completing the course, you’ll have all the requisite competencies to successfully operate a pool or other aquatic facility. Following
successful completion of the online course, students take part in an
instructor-led session at the conference on 2/9 from 1:00 - 9:00 pm
with hands on interaction. Successful completion of the instructor-led
session leads to certification.*
