The Yellow House Community Learning

The group of artists and artisans
known widely as the Backroads

celebration of art in central Massachusetts on Saturday and Sunday,
October 5 & 6, from 10:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m. On those days, this
justly famed group will welcome
visitors to their studios and workshops to observe, admire, peruse
and possibly purchase their
unique, handmade offerings, as
they discuss and demonstrate their
individual talents.

by a board of directors, including
board president, Bonnie Rathbone, a
former high school principal, and VP,
Janet Callahan, president of Palmer
Paving, Inc. Former Palmer Public Library director, Nancy Bauer is the Financial Officer, and two directors,
Margaret Boyko and Lisa Remillard coadministrate the learning center.

about the need they have filled in our

Sheila Cuddy
The Boards of Directors of the
Quaboag Valley Community Development Corporation (QVCDC)
and the Quaboag Valley Business
Assistance Corporation (QVBAC,)
announce the selection of Sheila
Cuddy as the new Executive Director. Sheila is “tremendously excited,
pleased and honored to have been
chosen to carry on the dedicated
work of founding Executive Director, Susan Rutherford.”
Susan retired in June after 19
years of tireless service fostering
economic development in the 15
towns of the Quaboag Region.
Sheila states, “It has been a privilege to be able to work closely with
Susan, our clients, board members,
and the QVCDC staff. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue

RHYTHMIC CIRCUS:
FEET DON’T FAIL ME
NOW!
sponsored by the Country Bank Community
Series
September 20, 2013 @ 7:30 pm
Abby Theatre
242 Old Petersham Road
Hardwick, MA 01037
After years of selling out venues
on its national tour, Feet Don’t Fail
Me Now continues its rise from an
underground percussive dance phenomenon to one of the most popular
tap shows since Tap Dogs. Featuring
rapid-fire tap from four award-winning dancers, a one-man beat-box
phenomenon and an infectious sixpiece band that channels everything
from funk to blues, and rock and
roll to salsa, audiences of all ages
agree that it excites, energizes and inspires at every turn.
This sensational theatrical production tells the tale of a nutty private
investigator’s assignment to discover
the origins of the Rhythmic Circus –
a unique group of colorful souls on a
mission to change the world with
song and dance. While hot on their
trail, investigator Bobert forms an
unexpected bond with the Rhythmic
Circus that hurtles him and the audience into an adventure that won’t
be forgotten.

THE SWEETBACK SISTERS
September 26, 2013 @ 7:30 pm
Abby Theatre
242 Old Petersham Road
Hardwick, MA 01037
Sweetback Sisters Emily Miller and
Zara Bode may not be blood relations, but their precise, family-style
harmonies recall the best of country
music from the Everlys to The Judds,
as well as the spirited rockabilly energy of Wanda Jackson, one of the
band’s role models. Like the artists
they admire, the Sweetbacks are concerned with the traditional subjects
of heartbreak, revenge, remorse and
staying strong in the face of relationships gone wrong, albeit with a contemporary sensibility. “We’re a
renegade retro band that mixes up
country, swing and honky tonk,” explains Bode. “Sometimes what we
deliver is straight out of the 50 s;
other times it’s BR549 meets The
B52 s.”
The Sisters have been touring relentlessly since they released Chicken
Ain’t Chicken in 2009. Their new
CD, Looking For A Fight showcases
the band’s razor sharp musicianship,
complex arrangements and growing
confidence as songwriters. Like their
raucous stage show, Looking For A
Fight balances yesterday’s hits with
original compositions from the
band. Sentiments of heartache, loss
and longing are dominant. Miller
says. “We didn’t only want to make a
classic sounding record, but a classic
feeling record as well.”

Yellow House
Offers Community
Learning

Continued from page one
Stained Glass to CPR to basic computer skills. In addition to classes,
The Yellow House sponsors a Farmers’ and Artisans’ Market visited by
nearly 1800 people since May of this
year. The Artisans’ Fair in December
is a popular event, showcasing highquality work from local artists and
craft-workers. Attendees come from
all over: 40% are from Palmer, some
come from as far away as Northampton and Springfield, and the balance
from throughout the Quaboag Hills
and Pioneer Valley communities.
As co-director Lisa Remillard recently pointed out, “We are offering
people more than classes here. We
see that our programs are facilitating
new friends, new community
groups. People come here from
throughout the region to meet one
another, to share their interests.”
And, as her co-director Margaret
Boyko points out, “There are no
other major adult learning centers in
the entire region — no community
colleges, or even high school programs offering courses for adults.”
The Yellow House is filling a major
need in the area.
For Business, Facilities for
Conferences, Meetings
For businesses, computer and
business skills training classes can be
tailor-made and offered at a time
convenient for the business. Rooms
are available for business rental. Any
business wanting a room for a board
meeting, or thinking about sponsoring a small local conference or business gathering may arrange their
event in the rooms at The Yellow
House, which offers a computer lab
and a kitchen facility.
Other classes available and of
special interest to local businesses
and business owners include a whole
series on health and wellness. Besides
the aforementioned CPR classes and
Heartsaver First Aid, there is a dropin Yoga class during Friday lunch
time, and several classes on alternative health techniques.
Many courses are available to facilitate starting a business — Blogging for Marketing and Fundraising
or How to Become a Talk Show
Host, for example. Financial classes
such as Protecting Your Estate, and
the ABC’s of Annuities are among
the myriad course topics. A perennially popular class is How to Protect
Yourself Against Identity Theft, presented by Chief Robert Frydryk.
Like Country Bank, which donated $5000 in January to support
classes on money management,
members of the business community
can also offer a helping hand for The
Yellow House. Business donations of
all sizes are most welcome. Besides
money, a wish list on their website
includes a water cooler, office supplies, and a portable white board.

by applying to the former owner of

working in and owning her own
business since the day she began.
“This work is just a natural continuation of a hobby I’ve always had
– making tees for my children and
friends, Kim says, “I really love what
I’m doing here.
Her business specializes in silkscreening t-shirts, sweatshirts, polos

Kim has been a Chamber member since January. She grew up in
Palmer and currently lives in Ware,

Juliet Rose Gallery Plans Two
Raku Workshops in October
The Juliet Rose Gallery and Pottery Studio will
offer Raku classes on Saturday October 5 and
Saturday October 26 at their studio, 191
Reimers Road in Monson. Raku derives from a
traditional Japanese firing process in which the
pot is removed from the hot kiln and placed directly into a cooling combination of leaves,
paper or wood chips to create a spontaneous design, often characterized by brilliant colors and
unique texture. Students bring their own work,
or may purchase studio work for the raku sessions. Pictured here, Linda Spelko, one of the
gallery owners, places fired piece into a can
filled with the wood chips and newspaper.
Workshops take place from 9am - 4pm and
include a potluck lunch. Fee is $115. For more
information and to register, call 413-5969741 or email [email protected].
Mexicali Grand Opening
Mexicali Fresh Mex Grill announces that the newly opened
restaurant, located at 146 West St.
(Rt. 32) in the Big Y Plaza, will have
its Grand Opening event on
Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013. From 36pm, patrons and public alike can
sample some of the homemade, deliciously fresh Mexican cuisine while
listening to a live radio broadcast by
the local 1250AM station, WARE.
Also included at the event will be
door prizes and giveaways, a raffle
and more!
Mexicali has been in operation
since its first Mexicali Grill was
opened in Spencer, Massachusetts in
May of 2011. “Everyone has been so
excited to see this new Mexicali open
in Ware. Our fans and patrons had
been asking for another restaurant
for a long time and Mexicali is
thrilled to deliver,” says Antonio
Garces, the General Manager of
Ware’s Mexicali Fresh Mex Grill. Patrons won’t even recognize the interior of the building, which used to
house a local video store. “Our authenticity is not only apparent in the
family recipes used to make our
homemade dishes and fresh margaritas, but in our décor as well. In fact,
many of our structural elements
were brought in from Mexico and
the interior was designed to reflect a
Mexican eatery,” boasts Garces.
Mexicali invites the public to attend this Grand Opening event and
join in the celebration as the restaurant welcomes the Ware community.
The restaurant is open 7 days a
week, from 11am to 10pm Sunday
through Thursday, and until 11pm
on Fridays and Saturdays, and offers
both dine-in and takeout options.
No reservations needed, just call
ahead: 413-277-0925.

who first suggested creating this program and who developed and submitted the required application to
the Department of Elementary and
Secondary Education. The program
is very close to receiving state approval under MGL Chapter 74 and
will be the 15th program offering at
Pathfinder.
Chef Bishop said that the Hospitality Program will focus on a number of areas such as:
Dining Room Management
Hotel Management
Travel and tourism
Resort Management
Club Management
Marketing
Cruise Ships
He said that students will be
working and marketing the school’s
Tea Room restaurant, giving the students the opportunity to learn how a
business operates. The students will
also be working with local Springfield area hotels, learning all aspects
of the hotel industry. Students will
acquire the necessary OSHA and
ServSafe certifications as well certificates issues by the American Hotel
and Lodging Educational Institute.
Pathfinder Superintendent Gerald
Paist said that, with the impending
arrival of a casino in western Massachusetts, offering a program in Hospitality Management was a “nobrainer. We are well aware of the employment opportunities available to
our students in the retail environment of a casino,” he said, “and we
want the casinos to know that we are
responding.”
Bishop noted that “Hospitality
gives the students the chance to learn
a career where they can find a job in
or near their community or allow
them to travel around the world!”
