Wine List 2011/12
Wine List
2011/12
H. T. WHITE & CO. LTD.
fine wine merchants for over a century
Welcome to our
2011/12 Wine List
Welcome to our new list, we hope you like the new layout and find it easy to use.
We have put the pricing on a separate insert, which we can update when we add new
wines or if the chancellor dares to change duty rates again.
The last year has seen particular growth in house wines from Chile, Italy, South Africa
and Argentina so we have responded to demand by adding to these sections. We are
always conscious of the need for “value for money” wines so have added more, but we
have balanced this by introducing some more niche and boutique wines, particularly
from new world countries and especially South Africa where progressive winemaking
has yielded a new generation of modern, stylish, high quality wines. The wine trade has
been driven by pressure on prices for the last year or two but we are delighted to see
consumer interest coming back in some of the more traditional areas like French
Bordeaux & Beaujolais. English wines are having a good year & getting much deserved
good press. We have expanded this section and offer wines from all three local counties.
As always we welcome your opinions and we listen to any suggestions for new ideas
for the next list.
Please go www.htwhite.com for news on new wines or to see
our current promotions or download the e-version of this list.
The H.T White team look forward to seeing you at one of
our events this year and wish you continued success for
this season.
Christopher M. Lees.
Managing Director.

Claret (Red Bordeaux)
Bordeaux has had a series of phenomenally good vintages which, amid much publicity,
has pushed the price of top properties to an all time high. We list some of these estates,
but find that real quality at a sensible price comes from Cru Bourgeois and Petit
Chateaux. This is where progressive winemakers, particularly left bank (St Emilion and
Pomerol) are increasing their proportions of Merlot, giving approachable, forward
wines. We continue to favour independent properties and have long and fruitful
relationships with family businesses in Bordeaux such as Sichel, Dulong and Baron
Philippe de Rothschild.

This is where Bordeaux is strongest. Fortunately we are able to buy most of our wines ‘En Primeur’, which
means we buy them in the spring following the vintage at opening offer prices. This keeps the prices
sensible. We will not then see the wines for a further 18 months to two years. We have many Crus
Bourgeois which represent the best value as classified growths are becoming prohibitively expensive. Our
favourites are Chateau d’Angludet, Patache d’Aux, Cissac & Meyney.

COTES CHALONAISE AND MACONNAIS
Called after the port in Chalon sur Saone and the town of Macon, this region produces more approachable
whites than its neighbours – pale and refreshing Chardonnays often more delicate than Chablis or

The Premier Cru Vineyards of Chablis
CHABLIS
The vineyards of Chablis in the north lie closer to those of Champagne than those of Beaune. As a result the
climate is cooler and the famous Kimmeridgian clay, an ancient maritime base of softly compacted oyster
shells gives incredible minerality and pureness to the wines. We are especially proud of the wines of Jean
Marc Brocard who achieved organic certification in 2004 and of the first wine from his son Julien; Domaine
de la Boissonneuse is produced biodynamically; harvesting in tandem with lunar and cosmic rhythms.

Red Burgundy
The vineyards of Burgundy form an arc roughly 300km long stretching from Chablis in
the north to Beaujolais in the south. We buy largely from three principal independent

family owned and controlled, passed from father to son spanning several generations.

the amount of average yearly rainfall owing to the protection of the Vosges mountains. By
law all Alsace wines are bottled in the traditional Flutes d’Alsace. We ship two ranges –

RHINE WINES
The Rhine wine area is a beautiful region of steep, terraced vineyards crowned with medieval castles and
ruins. The clayish slate soil produce wines with lively acidity. Riesling, Müller Thurgau and Kerner grow
best on these slopes. Rhine wines are mostly fresh, fragrant and show a fruity acidity.

Italian Wines – White
Italy is geographically and culturally diverse and produces a vast array of wine styles, it
has more indigenous grape varieties than any other wine producing company, including
France. A quarter of the worlds wine is Italian. Our main partners are Casa Vinicola
Botter and Casa Girelli, and more recently Pasqua and Paolo Leo/Orion Wines. Of note
are our house ranges of Viala and Lamura (Sicilian) and also the Triade and Passitivo
wines of Paolo Leo, which regularly steal the show at tastings. We have split this section
into Whites, Pinot Grigios, Rosés and Reds.

de Viana and Rioja Vega. We are delighted to include 1423 from Principe de Viana in
Navarra to broaden our portfolio from this exciting and thoroughly modern winery. Made
from 50% Tempranillo, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, aged in French and
American oak for two years the wine was made to commemorate the year that Carlos
111 created the Principality of Viana for his grandson Carlos de Evreux. Interest in
Spanish wines from regions other than Rioja continues to grow. The Navarra Wines
“ALBRET” and “ENTREFLORES” are both stunning wines.

Portuguese Wines
Portugal has moved on from the days of being famed for only its Port wines and now is
turning out a new generation of lighter, fruitier styles - both red and white. Treated
correctly, the local grape varieties give characteristic flavours which enable the wines
to stand out even from neighbouring Spain. To the north there are traditional producers
making Vinho Verde, a crisp, spritzy white wine, whilst in the Douro river valley, they are
making some exciting red wines from the unquestionably great Port grapes. In the
southern Alentejo and Estremadura regions the wine styles are more modern still, with
fruit character to the fore, although the style is still uniquely Portuguese.
Best of all, the wines are generally very good value for money!

Lebanese Wine
CHATEAU MUSAR
Chateau Musar was established in 1930 by Gaston Hochar. It is still run as a small but passionate family
business 78 years later. Chateau Musar has become the name synonymous with Lebanese wine. The red
wine is made from a varying blend of low yield Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault & Carignan, approximately
equally. It spends one year in French oak and is cellared for 6 to 7 years before release. There is no fining &
minimum filtration giving the wine its unique earthy richness but also the tendency to throw a sediment.
Decanting the wine 30 minutes – 2 hours before serving is highly recommended.

Australian Wines
The Australians can trace their wine industry back to 1788 in New South Wales. Today
there are over 1800 wineries across a landmass equivalent to that of Northern Europe,
yet amazingly, Australia counts for only 4% of global wine production. Australian wine
makers are pushing for a recognised system of regional classification. Ares such as
Barossa, Yarra Valley and Wrattonbully, to name but a few, where terroir dictates the
style of wine made there.
Twelve family wine producers have teamed up under the name of “Australias first family
of Wine” to represent Australian winemaking globally. We are proud to say that we
already buy from five of them, (De Bortoli, Brown Brothers, Jim Barry, Tyrells and
Yalumba). Our entry level wine selection is better than ever and we have added some
premium wines, including the super McHenry Hohnen range.

McHENRY HOHNEN
McHenry Hohnen is a family owned wine producer sourcing grapes from four vineyards and within these
vineyards, 18 varieties of grapes are cultivated. Their philosophy embraces minimal intervention
winemaking and the Viticultural practices embrace old-fashioned ‘common sense’ farming philosophies,
cultivating a system in which the soil and its organisms, along with plants, insects and animals, co-exist in
a thriving equilibrium. In autumn and winter, sheep and deer graze the grasses and legumes which grow
between the rows, and forage the fallen leaves; an essential link in nature’s nitrogen cycle.

BERINGER
In 1876 two German brothers Jacob and Frederick Beringer purchased a 215 acre site in Napa Valley in
California to establish the Beringer Brothers Winery. They employed Chinese workers who had returned to
the Bay area, having completed the Trans-Continental Railroad to dig tunnels into the mountainside to
form their fabled ‘Stone Cellars’, after which this range is named. To maximise these, Beringer Vineyards
became the first winery to organise guided tours in 1934 after prohibition and so began the lucrative
business of California’s wine tourism.

Chilean Wines
Chilean wines continue to show positive growth and interest and it is of course, the only
country in the world where the vines are Phylloxera free and therefore ungrafted. They
display intense, clean aromas and flavours and are noted for their young, clean
Sauvignon Blanc wines and for Cabernets and Merlots with good ageing potential.
Our inexpensive Volandas range offer great value, and the Lomas range is much
improved. The new entry level Rio Roca trio are great value for money. We have added
organic wines from Torres and also a delicious Riesling “Maiden Flight”.

ORGANIC & BIODYNAMIC WINES
The demand for organic wines has grown hugely over recent years. Organic wines are produced using no
man made pesticides, herbicides, fertilisers or flavourings and hence are seen as a healthier alternative.
They produce fewer allergies and less toxic hangovers than chemically affected wines. Their quality is high
and organic wines have won many awards. Bio-dynamic wines go one step further by being produced in a
manner that is sympathetic to environmental issues, lunar rhythms and astrological factors.

de Table and Vin de Pays which are ideal for house or function wines. Please talk to your representative or
call the telesales department for details. Other wines can also be personalised and we would be delighted

and mineral water, again including main brands and specialties. Our ranges and prices for all these
products are printed in a separate list, which is available from your representative or from the sales office.
