If the interview Mr. Maida gave The Citizen is any indication there’s bound to a lot of talk about getting outside your comfort zone, shunning apathy and being open to change. Mr. Maida’s band landed its first record deal while he was wrapping up his studies at the University of Toronto and, as a result, he got to travel the world as performer in his early 20s. A few years later, he became involved with War Child, a network of humanitarian organizations that help children affected by armed conflict. Through that organization, he visited a few of the world’s wartorn nations. “Those profound things in your life, you’re very lucky if they get to happen to you early on and I was,” he said. “Definitely for me, it gave me a different sense of myself and a different sense of Toronto and a different sense of Canada and a different sense of the planet.” Mr. Maida believes exposing yourself to new experiences and challenging yourself is vital, especially for today’s youth. “My whole feeling on culture these days is that it’s very divided, it’s very polarized,” he said. “... It’s very easy to get caught in all the trappings of our culture (and) the apathy that goes along with a lot of it ... and being involved and being engaged in your own life and the life outside of yours, it’s never been See EXPANSION, page 45. All that stuff you have to be tireless.” He’ll also likely shed some light on the other values and skills that helped him achieve success. “They’re saying for new students coming out of high school now, you’ll have 13 careers in your life. I think there’s a lot of value in understanding that,” Mr. Maida said. “Whatever path someone chooses and how many careers they switch, I think there’s some core values and skill sets that you need to be able to navigate those waters. And that was something, through music and (other) opportunities, I was able to grasp early on, which has been a DUSTIN RABIN PHOTO Our Lady Peace frontman Raine Maida will share his personal story at Inspire 2012. huge benefit to me.” Since Mr. Volpe launched Inspire last June, it has grown by leaps and bounds. The inaugural event attracted more than 150 people and although the target audience was youth aged 18-24, kids as young as nine and grandparents as old as 82 showed up, Mr. Volpe said. Given its initial success, the organizing committee decided to hold three mini-Inspire sessions at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, York University and the University of Buy Together And We All Win! Those sessions proved wildly popular as well and helped boost the number of student volunteers involved in helping organize the event, Mr. Volpe said. The event’s success also attracted a number of sponsors. The companies and organizations supporting Inspire include featured sponsors Scotiabank and The Canadian Italian Business Professionals Association as well as Extreme Pita, Z103.5, Hilton in Vaughan, Ferrero Canada, GEOX Canada, Marketwire, Longos, Pizza Nova, Molisana Imports, Astley Gilbert and Carino Agency. A new advisory board was also created. It includes a number of highprofile Canadians including Mr. Campanelli, lead actor on hit television show Flashpoint Enrico Colantoni, national food editor at Sun Media Rita DeMontis and Extreme Brands founder and president Alex Rechichi. “We’re pretty excited. We’ve really built a large base,” Mr. Volpe said. “We are building this thing through a consensus and the enthusiasm of those involved. ... The idea was to grow this thing organically and that’s what happened.” Mr. Volpe said the plan is to continue expanding Inspire in order to reach a wider audience. “It’s all about building a foundation for something much more formal, widespread and profound,” he said. “We want to make this the focal point for leadership for youth.” $195 for f a Year Y of Unlimited Laser Hair Removal for 2 Body Regions (Up to a $3,000 Value) HIGHLIGHTS: * 1 region: upper lip, chin, sideburns, back of the neck, armpits, bikini line, fingers, toes, neck, stomach line * 2 regions: half-arms, half-legs or thighs, shoulders, chest (except for stomach), brazilian, lower back, upper back * Only certain hair types qualify for this treatment CHOOSE FROM FOUR LOCATIONS: BUY FOR $35 w w w.
