Tradition was once again upheld and a King
& Queen were elected for Fruitport Old Fashioned
Days. This has been a time honored tradition in
Fruitport. Individuals or widows or widowers are
first nominated to the King & Queen board who
elect for the position. Being King & Queen is a
once in a lifetime event and Fruitport cheers the
King & Queen along each year with an honored
ride through the Fruitport OFD Memorial Day
Parade.
This past Old Fashioned Days 2016 King &
Queen were Russell and Patricia Stressman. The
couple was nominated by their children and made
it to the final round of decisions by the board. Each
King & Queen decide what to wear and their mode
of transportation. For many years in the past, Jim
Feldt has offered his convertible car and taken
the couples around the parade in classy style.
This year however, Russ & Pat chose to dress in
clothes from the 1800s period and ride in a horse
and buggy. The dress Pat wore was made by her
daughter, Heidi, and was a replica of the dress her
mother-in-law, Maudie Stressman had made for
her to attend a masquerade ball with Russ some
50 years ago. She also helped dress up her father
from his top hat to his spats.
The horse and buggy belonged to russ’
brother and sister-in-law, Bud and Ann Stressman
of Fremont. The horse, named “Fire”, was driven
by Russ himself, however for the sake of caution
due to the parade environment, he was led by
the couple’s nephew, Corey Oleen. Corey is also
a Fruitport Leo and helped out with the Old
Fashioned Days event each day. Corey was decked
out in western fashion and not to be outdone, Fire
was brushed out and adorned with ribbons. It was
a special and memorable day for the 2016 King
and Queen, Russell and Patricia Stressman.

Fruitport Lions once again hosted the Jazz
Festival at the Fruitport Old Fashioned Days in
Pomona Park Thursday, May 26, 2016. This was the
36th Jazz Festival with bands that consist of Middle
School and High School students from around West
Michigan. This year the Lions hosted 8 bands and
over 200 students from the following Schools:
Tri County High School
Pentwater High School
Big Rapids Middle School
Manistee High School
Spring Lake Middle School
Spring Lake High School
Mason County Central High School
Fruitport Middle School
All the kids that come and participate enjoy one
free ride and lunch courtesy of the Fruitport Lions.
The first school usually starts around 3:30 PM and
the last school of the night ends the event around
7:45 pm.
The day turned out to be beautiful and the
expected rain went to areas all around Fruitport
yet left the park and the event dry. Relaxing yet
upbeat Jazz sound could be heard even over the
carnival rides. When asked of the directors, would
they come back next year the top answer was “We
wouldn’t miss it”.
This year, as in past years, the chairs and stands
were provided by the Fruitport Middle School.
The Lions would like to give a big ‘Thank You’ to
Director Katie Hildebrant for delivery and pick
up of the chairs and stands. Also ‘Thank You’ to
Aaron Johnson for set up and tear down of the
sound equipment and Director Mike Truszkowski
of Spring Lake High School Jazz Band, for operating
sound throughout the day.
