After graduating from Palm Springs High School in 1953 I worked in a variety of
interesting jobs in the Western United States, finally settling down in the Inland
Empire where I graduated from the University of Redlands with a Bachelor’s
Degree in Management and where I raised my children. I retired from my position
as a Staff Analyst for the Registrar of Voters in the County of San Bernardino in
1997. I am currently living in my 35 foot motor home, and split my time between
volunteer work, and helping out during tax season in my son’s CPA firm. I am
looking forward to traveling in my RV, visiting with my six grandchildren (ages 7
through 17), and getting used to my new knees.

My experience at the Date Festival in 1961 was one of learning, true friendship and
fun. I thank the Date Festival, Ora Jared, Mr. Fullenwider and all those involved in
my day, for giving of themselves to watch over and guide all of us young girls in the
right direction. It was one of many wonderful chapters in my life, "a joy in the game
of living.” I am quoting S. Ullman who wrote over 100 years ago, "Live with
enthusiasm, whether 60 or 16, youth is a state of mind, an appetite for adventure,
imagination and courage." I still feel that youth! Vicki Biss McDermott

Fondest Memories: Presentation of the Queen and Court at the Pageant; all the wonderful
people on staff including Mom Ora and Sandy; the wonderful girls in the court, and the fun
we had at the compound; meeting Roger Moore on a TV interview for the Date Festival in
LA.
Since my wonderful Date Festival days, I graduated from College of the Desert, University
of Southern California, and lived in France and Florida. Other wonderful experiences
included being Miss Wool of California, and runner up to Miss California - World. I was
married to Harland Adams who was in the Kentucky Fried Chicken business, and whose
grandfather was Colonel Harland Sanders. Following my marriage, I was a KFC franchisee
in Colorado for ten years. Since then I am commuting between Aspen, Colorado, and Indian
Wells, and have affiliated with Tarbell Realtors in Palm Desert. It's great to be 'home' again!
I will say that being part of that court in 1972 was one of the highlights of my youth.
I am now a successful State Farm Agent since 1988 and was selected to star in two
national State Farm commercials in 1992 and 1994. I am a single parent with a 18
year old Son, Sean Teran who is a Senior at La Quinta High School.
1972 Queen and Court
My name is Monica Avila and I was in the court in 1974. There were around 10 of us at that
time. Sandy Krause was our Queen Mother and she used to work at a bank.
Since that time I got married and have three beautiful grown daughters and now I have four
handsome grandsons. I went back to school in 1990 and received my teaching credential in
1998. I was a full-time single mom and student in those days. It was very hectic but with the
help of God and my parents I made it and am very proud to say that I completed my goal to
teach. I recently started a Master's degree "Integrating Arts into the Curriculum", which I will
complete in 2007. I have been teaching for 10 years in Kindergarten. I began at Cesar Chavez
School in Coachella, and am currently at Eisenhower Elementary in Indio.
My daughter, Marisa Sanabria, works at the Riverside County Animal Control Center. My
daughter, Regina Sanabria, works at the Riverside County Planning Department. And last but
not least, my daughter Selina Sanabria works at Trinity Insurance Company. My daughter
Regina graduated from UC Davis, my daughters Marisa and Selina are going to College in the
evening to pursue their education. I am very proud of my daughters and I am glad that I never
gave up during the struggling times. Today I know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel,
because of my hard work and determination, my daughters have carried on this tradition.
