THE ORDER SONS OF ITALY IS THE OLDEST AND LARGEST ORGANIZATION OF ITALIAN AMERICAN MEN AND WOMEN IN THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA
Louis R. Santoro Elected State President at
85th New Jersey State Convention
The 85th OSIA New Jersey State Convention closed
on a positive note on Saturday April 30, 2011 at the
outstanding Seaview Resort and Spa in Galloway, New
Jersey. Louis R. Santoro was installed as New Jersey
State Grand Lodge President at a black tie dinner
officiated by National 1st Vice President Anthony
J. Baratta along with Past National President and
National Foundation President Vincent Sarno and
attended by over 200 state delegates, officers, family,
and friends. President Santoro, in his installation
speech, made it very clear that his main goal and
objective was to retain membership, and continue to
grow our Order. President Santoro also stressed the
importance for his administration to continue on the
path set by his predecessors to remain unified and
move the Grand Lodge forward for the common good
of the Order.
The convention began successfully on Friday, April
29th with the required quorum present. Mr. Robert
S. Polillo once again beautifully sang the Italian and
American National Anthems as the Color Guard of the
Atlantic County Sheriff’s Department presented the
Italian and American flags.
A luncheon was held on Friday afternoon to honor and recognize all the State filial lodge presidents for all their hard work and dedication to
the Order over the previous two (2) years and to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Grand Lodge of New Jersey.
President Bergbauer presented all lodge presidents and Grand Lodge officers with a token of his appreciation.
Mr. Leonard Wood Jr., Esq., Chairman of the Sons of Italy NJ Foundation provided a very
informative presentation on the charitable works of our Foundation. A highlight of this
presentation was a very emotional video about the Alicia Rose Victorious Foundation.
Presentations were also made by the Cooley’s Anemia and Arthritis Foundations.
Mrs. Grace Olivo organized a very informative CSJ presentation. Writer, photographer,
historian and world traveler, Cassandra Vivian gave a very enlightening presentation on the
history of Italian foods and the regions they originated.
On Saturday afternoon, a buffet luncheon was held to celebrate and acknowledge the 2011
New Jersey OSIA Foundation Scholarship recipients. Sixteen (16) well deserving young men
and women throughout the state were recognized and awarded $17,500 in scholarship
monies.

President's Message
by Louis R. Santoro
State President
Order Sons of Italy in America
Grand Lodge of New Jersey Well, it’s only been a few months as your State
President and I must tell you that holding this position and leading the
State of New Jersey, as we head into our second century, has been both
challenging and rewarding.
I feel the convention we just had was one of great camaraderie and respect
for not only each other but the Order.
A special thanks goes out to the Co-Chairman of our 85th Biannual
Convention, Toni Kerchersky and Ralph Capaccio and their committees
for putting on a spectacular event. I am well aware of the commitment
that was made in order to make this convention a success. Their untiring
devotion and their attention to detail was amazing and I once again
commend them.
As I mentioned to you in my inaugural speech, at the convention, an
installation ceremony generally marks a new beginning, a new dedication
within our Order, and a new spirit among us all. A President may sense and
proclaim that new spirit, but it is only its members who
can provide it.
My administration will continue to be pro-active rather than reactive. We
will continue to be visible and always accessible. I will challenge not only
myself but my officers on Grand Council to do all they can to keep the lines
of communication open with each and every lodge and lodge member
throughout this state. Please remember that we are here for you. Do not
feel that any issue , whether how big or small, is not worthy.
One way to do this is to bring back a re-vamped deputy program. As my
Vice Presidents and I discussed, we feel that it is “key” to keep the lodges
and their members informed and give them a voice to express their
thoughts and concerns. So, that being said, the state will be divided into
three (3) regions with each Vice President along with State Trustees will
conduct quarterly meetings with lodge presidents and their officers to
discuss ideas, questions or concerns they may have.
I feel this administration faces many demanding challenges ahead, with
the ever increasing age of our membership and tough economic times,
will force us to think “outside the box” to increase revenue and retain
membership.
Growth in membership is most vital to our continued success. We will need
to be proactive rather than re-active in our thought process and decision
making. In doing so, this has made us
the fifth largest Grand Lodge in the country.
This administration must and will show courage by confronting any
problems that should arise instead of passing them on to future
generations. We must adjust to the changing times and still hold on to
unchanging principals.
Even though I am only in my infancy as State President, I have worked
closely with all of my Vice Presidents and Grand Council and feel that we
are all on the same page and thought process to what is needed to keep
the Grand Lodge of New Jersey moving in the right direction.
I am sure that we may have our differences throughout my tenure, but I
know we can and will work them out as they may arise. I strongly believe
that each and every member of my administration has the best interest of
this Order at heart.
As I also mentioned in my speech, I feel that my family has grown by more
than 3,000 and I could not be happier. I look forward to visiting all of the
lodges, breaking bread and working together to make this family something
to be proud of.
With all the travelling and time away from home, I want to thank, in
advance, my wife Cristina and two sons Nicholas and Matthew, for their
continued support for the nesx two years.
Knowing I will not be able to accomplish all that I propose, alone. It will
take a ‘team” and the team that I have been blessed with will work hard for
each and every member. I will also lean on the expertise and knowledge of
my past presidents for their guidance.
Once again, not only will I challenge myself, but I will challenge all my Vice
Presidents and Grand Council members to commit all they have to grow
and continue to unite New Jersey and lead us toward our next one hundred
years.

Immediate Past State President's Message
by Thomas A. Bergbauer, Jr., P.E.
Immediate Past State President
Order Sons of Italy in America
Grand Lodge of New Jersey As we have just completed the Grand Lodge of New Jersey’s 85th State Convention I have noted that it’s very hard to believe that 4 years
have passed…it has been a long road…but it has been very rewarding to watch the organization grow. Before I go any further I would
again like to thank our convention co-chairpersons Toni Kerchersky and Ralph Capaccio, our Executive Director Rita, and the entire convention committee for all of the work that went into putting this convention together. For all of you who were not in attendance, I am
proud to say that you missed one of our best conventions ever and I’m sure that others will agree.
To serve in this position is an honor; an honor that I could never explain. To begin in this organization as a 22 year old kid out of college and then end up 22 years
later in the highest position in the Grand Lodge is an amazing ride. I’ve seen a lot and given it my all and in the end I hope that it has benefited the organization,
after all, that’s why we do this; to help others and to perpetuate our heritage. If we’re in it for any other reason we’re doing ourselves and the Order a huge
disservice.
We are also celebrating the 100th Anniversary of our Charter as a Grand Lodge. The Grand Lodge of NJ was chartered only 5 years after Dr. Sellaro founded the
organization in 1906 in New York City. The organization has had to adapt to an ever changing society over the years in order to survive a century of existence. But
in order to survive this long it also takes a certain strength and it is that strength not only from its members but from the inter core of leaders – Grand Council
Officers and filial lodge presidents that keeps us moving during the good times as well as the not so good times.
As I said, I consider it an extreme honor and a privilege to have been able to serve as your State President over the last 4 years. It has been a long road – the first
2 years we accomplished many things and I feel that the last 2 years we just refined things and tried to keep things moving. This was all done with the help and
support of my 3 Vice Presidents, Lou Santoro, Dominic Pucci, and Bob Bianchi as well as the Grand Council.
I’m not going to waste your time telling you of the accomplishments… I would however like to highlight just a couple things that occurred over the last two years.
Of course one of the things that happened early on in the administration was that we were fortunate enough to host then Governor Jon S. Corzine at our June
2009 Grand Council meeting held at Camden County College in Blackwood, NJ. This marked the first time in over a decade that a sitting NJ Governor attended
any function hosted by the Grand Lodge of NJ. I am very proud of the fact that we were able to accomplish this and it took many people to make it happen. This
happened mainly because of two people: National Historian and Past State President Sam Fumosa worked diligently with the Governor’s office to get a commitment for the visit while Past State President Lou Cappelli worked to arrange and coordinate the use of the College facilities. The Governor was very well received
and did an outstanding job talking about the accomplishments and contributions of Italian – Americans not only to the country but to NJ.
Later in 2009, a group of us were fortunate enough to witness Governor Corzine signing the Bill into law which declared the month of October each and every
year as Italian – American Heritage Month in NJ. Thank you to National Foundation Trustee and Past National CSJ President Angelo Bianchi for setting this up.
Another accomplishment that I am very proud of is that we were able to surprise a very good friend of ours, Joe E. Fay. At our October 2009 Grand Council meeting we were honored by the presence of our then newly elected National OSIA President Joseph DiTrapani as he bestowed the honor of National Deputy Emeritus to the Grand Lodge of NJ on our special friend from New York, Joe E. Fay. Joe’s excitement and love of the Order were evident to everyone there that night
and as always, we thank Joe for his presence and his wisdom.
I have mentioned many times as we visited your lodges that we are the 5th largest of 19 Grand Lodges in the country and we have maintained this status. Also, a
year ago when we distributed raffle tickets to support OSIA National, all of you stepped up to the plate. We sold the (60) or (65) tickets that we were given and
then we took more to help one of the other Grand Lodges. Our Grand Lodge ended up selling the third most tickets in the country – that is something that I think
that we can be proud of. Last May a group of us got together and attended the NELA Gala in Washington, D.C., taking a limousine down and back. We did this on
our own, but it was also a way that we sent a message. That message is that the Grand Lodge of NJ is back…back in the fold. Our performances have earned us
respect from National and has given us much success which has allowed us to rebuild relationships coast to coast. A lot of the credit here goes to Past National
and State President Vince Sarno. I also would be remiss if I didn’t thank our National President Joe DiTrapani for always being there for me for guidance and for
having the confidence in me and the Grand Lodge of NJ.
Unfortunately, I have been experiencing some personal issues over the last two years and so fulfilling the obligations of this office have been even more difficult,
but because of the values that my parents instilled in me, I have not given up. I tried my best while dealing with them to keep focus on the organization. If there
is anything that I overlooked, I apologize to all of you. It certainly was NOT intentional. But I could not have done it alone as I had a huge support circle and it
began with 2 people who I could never thank enough. Too many times, and Carrie reminds me of this at least once a week, we don’t realize what we have until
it’s gone and too many times we take things for granted. I’m glad that I had a wake-up call at 46 years old. My parents have been amazing; Tom and Doris…I owe
this to you; everything that I’ve been able to accomplish, for everything that you’ve done for me throughout my life, but especially over the last 2 years, thank
you – I love you both. Also my sister Terri…after nearly 20 years of not really communicating with each other, she stepped up to the plate, reaching out and grabbing me and she kept me from falling many times. A thank you also to my children Andy and Samantha for their understanding when I was conducting OSIA business and may not have been with them. Finally, nearly a year ago, I was lucky enough to have a very special person walk into my life. She has been my strength
and support each and every day since then with her constant encouragement and love. Carrie, I can never begin to thank you enough for all that you’ve done for
me and taught me.
My support staff within the organization has also been a formidable one beginning with our Executive Director Rita for her continuous support, hard work, and
most of all her friendship always encouraging me that we were on the right track and during those tough times she covered for me and at times shielded me
when necessary. Of course our Vice Presidents and our Past State Presidents played a huge role in what we’ve accomplished not only during this administration
but over the years. I can only say THANK YOU…we were a wonderful team!!
The Past State Presidents of this organization gave their time away from home, and as I said, if you’re going to do this job right it is like having another full time
job. I respect each of them for what they accomplished when they were in this position as they were the guiding force to bring us to where we are today. They
each accomplished things in their own way but no matter what they did or how they did it, it worked. I have been in this organization for nearly 26 years now
and so I was lucky to serve under each of them. No, we didn’t always agree, in fact sometimes it was not pretty at all. State Conventions in the past were very
stressful at times over the years, but we ALL persevered in our own ways and didn’t give up, and eventually, and I’m proud to say that it happened during this
administration, we came together. To further explain it my friend, Past State and National President Vince Sarno said it best when we were discussing a couple
issues on the phone one day when he said, “…you know, I think that you and I were always in the same church, we were just sitting in different pews.” We were
all out for the good of the Order; we just had different ways of going about it. How true that was, but I think that we’re now in the same pew. I would like to
thank them each for their contribution to get this organization through 100 years. Past State and National President and National SIF President Vincent Sarno,
Past State President and National Historian Sam Fumosa, State President Emeritus Jim Daloisio – my friend and boss – who I thank for his immeasurable support
in allowing me to fulfill the requirements of this position, Past State President Lou Cappelli, Immediate Past State President Hank D’Andrea and Honorary State
President Bill Bisirri.
I also thank all of our Grand Council officers and filial lodge Presidents who stepped up and went the extra mile to become involved and to help achieve the accomplishments that I spoke of, and my good friend and confidant Lucy Codella of NY – she has been there for me and has never hesitated to offer her support,
opinion, and most of all her friendship.
Finally – I would like to ask that you show your new State President Lou Santoro and his administration the cooperation that you’ve shown me. I am not going
anywhere; I will be around; my focus may change a little and I may take a little time off, but I will be here to support and work with Lou and his administration
and I hope that you will do the same.
Thank you again for all of your cooperation, hospitality and support over the past four years. Ciao!!

It’s Sunday night, May 1st, 2011. A couple of hours ago,
Celeste and I drove home from the Seaview Resort where the
Bi-Annual NJ SOI Convention was held beginning Friday, April
29th. We discussed our experiences on the drive home and I’d
like to share them with you.
The Seaview Resort facility is first class in appearance, service, and amenities. While
we definitely had the feeling of being in a resort with continental influence and the
majority of guests were Italian-American, the interior decorations lead me to believe
that I came right off a golf course in the Main Line, Princeton, or East Hampton. How
ironic that the hotel is, in fact, now run by a company started by an Italian-American,
Andy Dolce. If we go there again, we’ll have to lobby to get a picture of a golfer with
a first name like, Pasquale next to “Biff, Herbert, Babs, or Scott.”
Our convention was managed under the care of our new third vice president, Ralph
Capaccio and new treasurer, Toni Kerchersky, along with our “energizer bunny”, Rita
Marie Campbell They deserve the highest accolades for a professionally organized
event. I especially appreciated the “Italian-ish” touches that have been missing from
the previous conventions that we attended.
The parliamentary aspect of the convention was proper, orderly, and mundane with
an occasional light moment caused by Lou Capelli Sr, Bob Bianchi, and yours truly.
These moments were few and far between. We need much more of them.
The best parts of the weekend were the in-between moments when the delegates
had time to fraternize. During those times, I enjoyed my friends and made new
ones. We need more fraternization time and less business time. We are a fraternal
organization not a business.
The only somewhat lively part of the formal proceedings was a discussion following a
motion from the floor to hold future conventions in one day. It failed by general vote.
The motion was made because the business part of the convention could, in fact, be
conducted within one day and would reduce costs.
Saturday
October 8, 2011
Registration 8:30 AM
Walk Starts at 9:00 AM
Cooper River Park
Pennsauken, NJ
In current economic times, the cost reduction is warranted and the general
agreement to move the convention site away from the Atlantic City area will help
substantially in 2013.
While the convention business can easily be done in one day, to hold the entire
convention in one day goes against all logic for a fraternal organization. We need
the time for doing what Italians do best…enjoy each other while renewing or making
friendships from all over New Jersey.
The above are my opinions alone. Let me know if you agree at DonNicola@verizon.
net. If you disagree, you can write my next column with your comments.

Commission for Social Justice
Mayor Matteo Renzi
Office of the Mayor
Florence, Italy
MAY 2011
The National Commission for Social Justice (CSJ) is the anti-defamation branch of the National Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA) and as such
represents over 500,000 family members. We are headquartered in Washington, D.C., our nation’s capital. The National CSJ is the leading Italian
anti-defamation group fighting bias, bigotry and defamation of Italian Americans. We have also promoted the positive image of Italian Americans
through our many programs for over 30 years.
We have received many e-mails, faxes, letters and phone calls from OSIA members and others with regard to the cast of “Jersey Shore” filming episodes of this negative image reality series in Florence. Italian Americans are shocked and thoroughly disgusted that this show is planning to film
in Italy and we want to lend you our support and congratulate you on the strong stance you have taken in issuing strong guidelines and important
limitations as to when and where they will be doing their filming. Bravo for your brave and courageous comments reported in the media regarding the MTV reality series “Jersey Shore.”
We have been waging a battle with MTV/Viacom over the negative stereotypical reality series “Jersey Shore” since November, 2009 and its influence and negative effects on adolescents and young adults. While I represent the National CSJ, Grace Olivo, represents the New Jersey CSJ and
Stella Grillo represents the New York CSJ. Along with the National OSIA President Joseph DiTrapani, National OSIA Foundation President Vincent
Sarno, NYS OSIA President, Salvatore Lanzilotta and the NJ OSIA President Tom Bergbauer, National OSIA Historian, Sam Fumosa, who both happen to be residents of New Jersey, we have been collectively trying to deal with the calls, e-mails, faxes and letters of complaint we have received
from our membership in both New York and New Jersey and also in Florida and California where some shows have been taped.
Most of the actors are not Italian Americans but yet they had an Italian flag on the house used in the series and used terms such as “guidos and
guidettes” to describe their characters. As Mayor of Florence, we are certain that you’ve noticed how Italian Americans are depicted in the American media as buffoons, gangsters, and now immoral, baseless characters. The show, highlighting ten or more “stereotypical Italian-American New
Jersey participants”, showcases their outrageous behavior and attitude. This defamatory show, which began on December 3rd, 2009, has joined
the ranks of some of the lowest forms of television “entertainment.”;
I would like to make you aware that I attended a meeting with MTV/Viacom on March 18, 2010 along with the NYS CSJ Counsel, Michael Santo,
National CSJ Past President Emeritus, John Dabbene, and NYS CSJ President, Stella Grillo, whereby we requested that the Italian flag be removed
immediately and that a disclaimer be stated before the program that the program “doesn’t represent the Italian American heritage and culture in
any way.” We were thrilled when we learned that the flag has been removed from the house which is a huge victory for our organization. We also
held a second meeting with MTV which resulted in more changes but not the elimination of the reality series. Unfortunately the characters have
not been removed and are now residing temporarily in Florence.
We formed a coalition of Italian American organizations supporting our stand including UNICO, the Columbus Citizens Foundation and NIAF. We
know that this reality series doesn’t represent the majority of Italians and Italian Americans. This series demeans an entire ethnic group and helps
to perpetuate the negative image of Italian Americans. The contributions of Italians and Italian Americans to the world and to our society today
are being ignored.
The "Godfather" movies and the HBO series "The Sopranos" perpetrated the myth that a large portion of Italian Americans were less than desirable citizens and were associated with organized crime. Television series of this kind distort the image of all Italians and should and must be eliminated. .
Recently, American television has become sensitive to the feelings of most racial and ethnic groups. Consequently, television series that portray
African Americans, Hispanics, Asian Americans, Jewish Americans and other ethnic or racial groups tend to avoid stereotypes. Unfortunately, producers and directors of television series do not extend the same sensitivity to the nation's 26 million Italian Americans, whose values and customs
are frequently distorted in the media.
We are proud of your efforts to limit the exposure of this defamatory reality series in Florence. We have to eliminate the constant barrage of
anti-Italian sentiment and negative stereotyping of Italian Americans so prevalent in the media today. The coverage you received in the press and
television media, was watched closely by those of us who’ve been in the trenches trying to eliminate such negative images of Italians and Italian
Americans, and also making people aware of the positive contributions of Italians and Italian Americans.
Thank you again for having expressed your feelings about the reality series and your honesty, courage and commitment to your heritage and the
people of Florence.
Yours truly,
Santina A. Haemmerle

Vita Nuova Lodge # 2327
Vita Nuova Lodge 2327 of Bellmawr and Mount Ephraim honored three people
on April 2, 2011 at a dinner dance in Lucien’s Manor in Berlin, NJ. More than 115
people attended the black tie optional dinner.
Diane Santoro, vice president/manager for PNC Bank, and currently vice
president of the lodge was honored as the Person of the Year 2011. The lodge
also honored James and Wendy Tomasello, owners of Gardner Funeral Home in
Runnemede, NJ. The Tomasello’s were the 2011 Primio Umanitario recipients (The
Humanitarian Award) for 2011.
Diane has been a member of the Sons of Italy since 1995 when she joined William
Paca Lodge in Bellmawr.
She is a big supporter each year of the lodge’s Breakfast with Santa where she
volunteers along with her colleagues in assisting children of the Bellmawr and Mount
Ephraim community which are less fortunate and bringing the families together
during the Christmas season. Before the merger of William Paca and Mount Ephraim
lodges she served William Paca as mistress of ceremonies, orator, sergeant at arms,
trustee, and was a delegate to the state convention.
Jim and Wendy are not only successful business partners; they are also humble
contributors to mankind.
Over the years, both have made significant contributions to various local charity organizations. Some of them include donations to at least 11
local schools including Friends School in Mullica Hill and LARC School. Donations to nine local athletic associations include Mount Ephraim Little
League, Glendora Girls Softball and Bellmawr Tigers Baseball.
Their donations also included local organizations, namely Cub Scout Pack 117, Runnemede Fire Company #1 and the Bellmawr Fire and Rescue.
They have generously given to local church affairs as well as local fraternal organizations. They have also sponsored golf outings for at least 12
organizations.

“Vicin’ al Mare Lodge Visit to the Meucci -Geribaldi Museum
President Alex Cioffi is at lower right of picture."
The Vicin' al Mare (near the sea) Lodge of Margate celebrated Italian Heritage
month by hosting a bus trip to Little Italy in Manhattan where one of the highlights
was a visit to the Italian American Museum on Mulberry Street. It is housed in the
former Stabile Bank, which was founded in 1885. The bank offered newly arrived
immigrants more than financial services. It provided telegraph, post office, steamship travel and notary public; a kind of immigrant community center. The museum
exhibits collections of objects and memorabilia which tell the story of the struggles
and achievements of Italians and their heirs to the American way of life.
The group also dined at one of the great Italian restaurants in the area, visited the
Most Precious Blood of St. Gennaro Church, and enjoyed free time shopping for the
delectable foods found in Little Italy.
The final leg of the journey was a visit to the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum on Staten
Island. The group was given an excellent presentation and tour of the museum by
the director, It was the home of Antonio Meucci and his wife in 1850. Meucci was
recognized by Congress in June of 2002 for his original work in the invention of the
telephone. Having been hospitalized for months, and on the brink of poverty, he
could no longer renew his patent. Meucci submitted plans to the New York Telegraph Company; they "lost" the plans, and soon after, Alexander Graham Bell received a patent for a nearly identical device.
Giuseppe Garibaldi visited the Meucci home in 1850 and lived and worked with Meucci for 4 years. He returned to his native Italy and is celebrated worldwide as the one who led volunteer legions to the victories that resulted in Italy being united from the Alps to Sicily on November 7, 1860, for the first time
since the fall of ancient Rome.
It was a beautiful day of education, inspiration, and friendly camaraderie.

that the four final teams were playing, eating some of the delicious food
that was brought by the bocce players and the food that was delivered by
Giovanni’s, relaxing under the shade of the many trees, listening to the Italian
music (courtesy of Dino). Ten teams played in this year’s Bocce Tournament.
The teams were named after cities and small towns of Campania, a Southern
Italian region. Four teams made it to the finals and played on Sunday for the
st

Cassandra Vivian created a delightful, engrossing story . . . that filled my senses
with visions of culinary delights, . . . caught me up in history lessons about her
rebellious family's role as peasants under the gradually eroding control of often
greedy padrones, . . . Brava, Cassandra! It's a masterful performance.
