2014 Paula Holm Award
Jones, LG Honored With ‘The Paula’!
The towering achievements of our members Ted Jones and Laurie Gaudreau were honored at
the Annual Meeting of WCRC on February 15th, 2014, with the Paula Holm Award, the
WCRC Lifetime Achievement Award! The Paula serves two purposes: honor those who have
dedicated their lives to the pursuit of excellence for the Winners Circle - and remember our own
Paula Holm, who we lost to cancer in 2009. The awar d nominations come fr om our
members, and are sorted by members Stella McCormick and Professor Byron Petrakis. It was a
difficult task to parse through the deserving candidates, but in the end, Stella and Byron wisely
chose to honor both superstars in the same year.
About Ted:
Ted Jones makes up one-half of our deserving Paula winners, and his story is remarkable.
2014 marks his 50th year as a road racer; his first in 1964 - the Newburyport Yankee Homecoming 10 miler; his running career starting in high school in 1962. Ted joined WCRC in 1979,
right after his son was born. Ted served on the WCRC Board of Directors for a little over 20
years! Ted was the founder, and race director for the High Street Mile from inception in 1991,
for an incredible 14 years. Ted has also served as joint-race director for April Fools 4 miler
with his wife Allie, Vicki Miller, and the legendary Paula Holm.
Besides being the lead director, Ted has also been the assistant race director for a number of
races, including our annual show, 'The Hangover' and worked on the WCRC timing crew
(before chip timing) over the years.
Ted has 'only' done 13 marathons, deciding to end his marathon career at the 100th BAA in
1996 - his best marathon time, in an impressive 3:09. Knee injuries diverted him to triathlon in
the early 90s when cross-training became popular, and
Ted promptly gobbled up Sprint, Olympic (his favorite) and 1/2 Ironman tri-distances. Ted also founded a
‘WCRC Biathlon Series’ on Thursday nights: a 12
mile bike and 5K run, during good weather months.
Old Snooze Racing Roundup
The speedy times Ted is most proud of include his sub24 minutes (sub 6:00) April Fool's 4 miler, his 62
USATF-NE Banquet Bash
minutes at Yankee Homecoming 10 miler, and 90
minutes at Mt. Washington.

Ted also run the USATF-NE mountain series for several years in his 50's, as well as the USATF-NE cross-country races.
Since retiring, Ted now coaches cross country at the Immaculate Conception in Newburyport, and Indoor track at Pentucket in West
Newbury.
About Laurie:
The other deserved half of our Paula Award goes to Laurie ‘LG’ Gaudreau. You might know her as a competitive runner. You
might know her as one of the biggest WCRC thumpers out there. You would be right on both counts. Laurie has served the
Winners Circle for many years, bringing youthful energy to the table—be it on the line at a race, or the Board of Directors table.
The volunteer:
Laurie’s gifts to the club are numerous. She’s served for multiple years on the Winners Circle Board of Directors. LG is the current
co-race director of the WCRC April Fools 4 Miler, which entails mountains of preparation work—and results in stacks of donations
for worthy causes. Every year in November, Laurie can be found in preparation of building the women's teams for the Mill Cities
Relay; the gobs of time spent building, is eclipsed by the time spent moving people team to team, as racers inevitably drop in and
out of availability.
The competitor:
When it comes to competition, Laurie doesn’t just settle for any Podunk 5K, many of which she has won the women’s division outright. Laurie also goes big, and succeeds. LG is a USATF-New England Grand Prix Road Racing Ironrunner, which is to be a
finisher of all 7 series races. She tackled the hyper-competitive USATF-NE Cross Country Championships, and took 2nd in age
F40-44 for all of New England. In 2013, Laurie ran 6 of the 7 USATF-NE Grand Prix races, and took second in the very
competitive age F40-44 overall in the series! More recently, she was our 2013 WCRC Wild Turkey Trot women's overall
champion.
LG is also an Ironman triathlete - she finished the famously tough Ironman Lake Placid event twice, trimming her time down on her
second try by just under an hour!
She wears a Rally Cap:
Bestowing upon her WCRC female teammates the nickname 'Honeybadgers', during the 2012 season she single handedly
generated the buzz and draw to attract the most WCRC women ever to compete in the USATF-New England Grand Prix series.
Laurie is a builder of stables of WCRC women runners, in multiple age groups—luring them to Mill Cities, USATF races, and
WCRC memberships!
A huge congratulations to Ted and Laurie!

About Paula:
Paula Holm was a 20-year member of the WCRC. She was a shining example of what it is to be an WCRC
athlete, volunteer, and influence. Her friends are still here, Stella and Byron among them. The cultural effect of
her presence shines-on in her minions: you, the great people of WCRC. We honor her memory every year
through the annual award, to members that reflect the features of Paula, through these requirements:
• Ongoing, active membership in the WCRC
• Significant contributions to the club’s role in advocating, sponsoring, and supporting the sports of running,
cross-country, and track and field.
• Contributions to the club as a competitive athlete.

WCRC Volunteer of 2013
The 2013 VOTY award went
to Carol Comeau, a crafty
club veteran and relentless
volunteer of all things
WCRC. A true Jack-of-allTrades, Carol can be found in
the trenches of registration at
any club race. Her skillset and
competency makes our races
go smoothly, and our racers
go home happy. This
invaluable member deserves
our worship, and here it is—
thank you Carol!
-WCRC Most ImprovedMale 2013
Matt Cirinna was the
People’s Choice for MIR
Male of 2013! Why you ask?
Because besides setting PRs
at the 10K and 5K distance,
our Masters Ace totally
knocked us out with his badto-the-bone 20 minute
improvement at the marathon
distance (3:10:54 at
Sugarloaf).
So raise a tall glass to Matt—
and bottoms up!
-WCRC Most Improved Female 2013
Getting injured as a runner is
eventual, but when stepping

Back-to-Back Age Group Wins...
WCRC Chairs Champs of 2013!
One of the great things about a long season of racing, is the taste of
celebratory Champagne afterward. But this is the WCRC, and we are
more apt to pour the Champagne of Beers—...er, I digress.
USATF-NE banquet organizer Jim Garcia put on a great show—a
sumptuous buffet, great deserts, and even The Voice of New England
Running Andy Schachat was our MC for the evening.
This banquet entails honoring age group and overall champs across all
USATF New England series; from cross country, to mountain running,
to the series near and dear to us: the Grand Prix.
While the banquet had to compete with the Patriots in the playoffs, it
didn’t stop 14 WCRCers from hogging the bar line: Greg Gaudreau,
Laurie Gaudreau, Annie Kucharski, Vicki Miller, Tom Miller, Pete
Heslam, Jacci Hussey, Nick DeFusco, John Webber, Carol Ann
Stark, Evie Maguire, Dan Maguire, Louise Valois, and Nick
Paquette all made the WCRC pr esence known, and cheer ed on
those deserving recognition.
Vicki Miller in 2013 gave WCRC an age gr oup champion in the
Grand Prix series—in her F60+ category! Vicki completed all 7 races
in this grueling series as well, distinguishing herself as a USATF-NE
Ironrunner. Vicki’s name was called, and she took home a sweet vest.
Laurie Gaudreau took 2nd in F40-44 age, completing 6 events and
also took home a vest!
The 2 tables that WCRC held court at, honored their two Grand-Prix
age-group vest-getters with a standing O—and the hoot n’ hollerin’ that
comes standard with any WCRC member.

Notes:
Susannah Landreth is officially WCRC’s fir st USATF-NE Grand Prix champion.
While WCRC members Dave Dunham and Gilbert ‘Gil’ Emery were the first of our clan to
win USATF-NE titles at the annual Grand Prix… alas, they ran for other clubs when they
won! Gil Emery ran for the North Medford Club when he won the 50+ age division in 1989,
and Dave Dunham ran for the Greater Lowell Road Runners when he won the Open division
in the same year as Gil, in 1989.

Did you Know?
Gil Emery has been a member of WCRC since club inception. When Gil was champ in
1989, the oldest age group was a 50+ division (three divisions: open, masters and 50+). Only
3 runners (Gil, Dunham and Larry ‘Legend’ Olsen) ran all 7 races in 1989. No jacket awards!

Hangover Classic
January 1, 2014
Carousel Lounge
Salisbury Beach, MA
Race #1 on the Loco Sports WRFB Series!
By Dennis Donoghue
Over a thousand shivering souls stretched the length of Atlantic Avenue,
corralled by ropes that kept them from straying. The start of the 2014
Hangover Classic 10K/5K/North Atlantic Plunge, delayed in deference to those still lined up at the port-o-johns, was just minutes
away. Race director Nick Paquette stared at those portable bathrooms as if seeing them for the first time. “Imagine having heated
port-o-johns?” he asked anyone within earshot. “I’m always looking for upgrades and this is one whose time has come.”
He didn’t wait for an answer. With everything in place for another successful Classic, he allowed himself a moment of freethinking.
Perhaps next year the race might indeed feature this novelty. Every year, it seemed, something new had been added. This year, for
example, finishers could instantaneously see and hear their names, times, and places broadcast on wide video screens inside the
garage beside the Carousel Lounge, an innovative touch replacing posted sheets of paper and the subsequent shoving and squinting
by those who wanted to see how they’d fared.
Also new for the Hangover in 2014, was the triumphant return a first stop on the Loco Sports Will Run for Beer series. The five
kegs of Pemi Pale Ale, Pigs Ear Brown, and Red Rack Ale from super-generous sponsor Woodstock Inn Brewery consumed during
the post race bash at the Carousel were almost enough to bring the Atlantic plungers out of their collective stupors.
“Being around those people just gives me the willies,” said Jean Chris Bertrand, who was stationed on the beach to dispense
popsicle sticks redeemable for unique beer glasses by renowned artist Louise Valois (who also designed the long sleeve tee shirts).
“When they come out of the water they aren’t exactly dead but they aren’t really alive either. It was Night of the Living Dead down
there.”
Earlier, out on the roads, hundreds more zombies were strung out along North End Boulevard. At the
10K turnaround, a patch of ice the size of a kiddie pool threatened to take down anyone hoping to
shave a corner. “They’d risk life and limb to pick up a few seconds,” observed Tom Cross, whose job
it was to save runners from themselves. “I should have encouraged them and sent the video to
Ridiculousness. I could have picked up some extra cash.”
Beth Dollas, second in her age gr oup (F 30-39), didn’t notice the ice. She’d rounded the corner in
one piece and was in the long homestretch, happy to have the wind at her back. “I don’t really pay
attention to anything when I run,” she confessed. “One time I actually ran through the finish. My
husband had to chase me for a quarter mile to get me to stop.”
That wasn’t a problem for Margaret McNulty, who’d run the 5K and cracked the top five in her age
group (60-69). “That was one of the first things I learned when I first took up the sport years ago,”
she remembered. “But running has changed so much since then. Maybe that just isn’t taught anymore.”
Another top 5K finisher (second in the 50-59 age group), Mary Ann McNeal, exited the chute and
turned directly into the crowded garage to put on warmer clothes when she heard a man call her
name. “It was a low voice, kind of sexy and alluring,” she recalled. “I started hunting around for
some tall dark and handsome type. Then I found out it was coming from the computer announcing
results. I don’t think it’s fair to fool people like that.”
Numero Uno: We gave
Vicki Miller the #1
Hangover bib in honor of
her 2013 USATF-NE age
group title!
Far from the garage, on one of the coldest spots on the course, the 5k turnaround, Maureen and Jim
Farren wer e busy handing out ice cubes to numb r unner s. “Contr ar y to what’s been going
around, it wasn’t some sick joke,” said Jim. “The water in the Dixie cups actually froze on us.
Somebody suggested next year we have a few cases of Scotch to go with the ice. I mentioned that to
Nick and he said he’d propose it to the board.”

(continued!) Later , as the post r ace par ty wound down at the Car ousel, Paquette sat scr ibbling at one end of the hor seshoe
bar. What capacity generator would be required to heat a dozen or so port-o-johns to a comply 72 degrees in twenty degree weather?
“Almost there,” he announced, holding up a damp napkin on which he’d scrawled a lengthy formula. “Just have to iron out a few
details regarding variable wind speed. But imagine race flyers advertising heated port-o-johns? We’ll double our numbers easy next
year.”

Amherst 10 Cavalrymen!
Jones Amherst 10 Miler
February 23, 2014
By Pistol-Pete Heslam
2014 Series Race #1—Amherst 10
Nine Circle runners braved the two hour drive and many potholes to compete in the
USATF New England 10 mile championship in Amherst Massachusetts. These brave
souls survived the hills and an icy dirt road from mile three to mile five to great
finishes. The women's team was led by two time USATF Grand Prix medalist Laurie
Gaudreau in 1:14.21 who commented she had “a better day than last year”, but
“wished it was the same downhill finish as last year”. She was followed by USATF
newcomer Julie Haynes in 1:25.56 who led the women's seniors' team to a solid fifth
place finish. She was followed by the 4th and 5th place finishers in the women's
veteran's category: Alice McGonigle in 1:26.15, and defending USATF Grand
Prix age group champion Vicki Miller in 1:27.22. Alice commented she was glad she
“no longer had to compete with some of the elite Whirlaway runners” in her new age
category (for now)!
On the men's side, the Circle's only sub-40 year old runner and 2012 Ironrunner Matt
Thomas had the best time for the Winner's Circle in 1:06.50. Veteran runner Rick
Bayko was back after a few year s away fr om USATF competition with a 1:15.33
finish for 12th in his age. Three 2013 Ironrunners filled out the men's team : Peter
Heslam in 1:10.32, Dan Maguire in 1:16.30 and Nick DeFusco in 1:21.55. Dan
commented that he “may have gone out too fast in 14:10 for the first two miles”, but
he said he “was still much faster than last year”. Nick commented: “yeah, we started
out strong and then found the joy of the hills of Amherst. There was not much time for
dawdling on the course anyway because everyone was headed back to the Circle for
the annual meeting that evening.”

Well Fed in New Bedford!
New Bedford Half Marathon
March 16, 2014
By Dennis Donoghue
2014 Series Race #2—New Bedford Half
Geoff Smith, two-time Boston winner back in the eighties, stood near one of the
gym exits as entrants picked up their bib numbers and filed back outside. His plan to run Boston ‘14 on replaced hips had been derailed due to an uncooperative hamstring. But he was planning to run New Bedford, one of the 3000 plus readying themselves for
wind-chill conditions below twenty degrees.
The Arctic cold wasn’t the only unusual aspect to this year’s race, the second in the USATF-NE Grand Prix Road Racing Series.
Security people were everywhere, searching duffel bags, checking bib numbers both at the start and later at the post race festivities,
and eyeballing suspicious-looking individuals. Somehow, no one in the Circle dozen was pulled aside for questioning, to the relief
of men’s team coordinator John Webber.
“These days they scan your bib and get your whole history, including your police record. With some of the people I brought
today there were some tense moments, let me tell you.”
Nonetheless, all Circle members made it to the start and shoehorned themselves into the corrals. The challenging course through this
hardscrabble working class city with its fabled waterfront and historic brick architecture drew enthusiastic crowds decked out in
green plastic jewelry and clutching green Solo cups to commemorate Saint Patrick’s Day.
“After training all winter alone in the dark and the cold it’s great to be acknowledged,” noted Kelli Fowle. “Though I think most of
these people would have cheered even if there didn’t happen to be a race going by.”
The WCRC did manage to field a senior men’s team, though this season’s roster is bone-thin compared with other years.
“The good news is we had a top ten finish today,” said Webber. “The notso-good news is there were just ten teams.”

Despite team struggles, individuals posted solid efforts. Rick “The Polish
Rifle” Bayko completed his second USATF-NE race of the season. After
his knee survived the icy patches of Amherst two weeks prior, he decided it
needed further testing on the macadam of New Bedford. Everything went
as planned and he arrived 16th out of 89 in the 60-69 age group.
“We’re going to be okay,” he noted as he collected his finisher’s medal.
“Gracie had surgery two years ago. She’s the one I’m most concerned
about. Earl has been hanging in there though he’s stiff as all heck every
morning. I post updates on each of them on my Facebook page if anyone
would like to know more.”
“I’m interested,” said John Rheaume, who averaged a tick under seven
minutes a mile over the course and was tucking into his third fish sandwich
ten minutes after he’d exited the chute. “Call me weird but I love to talk
knees. My second favorite topic is hips, followed by ankles. Are there any
more of those tartar sauce packages left?”
As happens every year, the post race celebration migrated from the New
Bedford YMCA to the area’s rollicking taverns where those in running
gear joined locals festooned in green.
“I thought this year was one of the best,” said WCRC Vice President Dave
Carroll. “With all the secur ity this city is the safest in Massachusetts
today. It’s the ride home with my teammates I’m concerned about.”

We Want More ‘An Ras Mor’!
March 30, 2014
by Dennis Donoghue
2014 Series Race #3 - An Ras Mor 5K
Maybe it was the cold steady rain which prompted a
handful of graying Circlers to carp about starting their own
club which they’d aptly dubbed ‘The We-Used-to-be-Good
Running Club’.
In fact, they’d even come up with a motto: ‘Every race we
run feels like that last one we’ll ever run.’ Their somber
mood matched the Cambridge weather on this last Sunday
in March with spring happening somewhere else in the
world. Given the task at hand, some grumbling had to be
expected.
When the gun sounded, however, the Circle contingent
managed to refocus.
The women’s start of the third race of the USATF-NE
Grand Prix Road Racing Series went off at 9:30, the men at
9:45. What ensued was a free-for-all down Mass Ave
toward the Harvard Square turnaround. Runners slalomed
around puddles, potholes and sewer covers. This was city
running at its best--flat, fast and straight.
...“Unless you ducked into one of the thousand pubs along
the course that is,” noted Louise Valois. “Half the group I
drove down with haven’t been accounted for yet.”
Still roasty after the 5K, Julie ‘Justice’ Haynes, John ‘JWeb’ Webber,
Renegade-Rick Bayko, Bob ‘Strouty’ Strout, Pete ‘Diesel’ Heslam,
Annie ‘AK-47’ Kucharski, Dennis ‘DoubleD’ Donoghue, Dan
‘Magnum’ Maguire, Nick Paquette and Nick ’The King’ DeFusco
cool down with copious and free ‘Fuzzy Logic’
Apparently those individuals were unaware of the free beer at the finish provided by Portico Brewery. The featured brew was Fuzzy
Logic which pr ovided enough kick to make standing in the mud and r ain with teammates on a for ty degr ee day an enjoyable
experience.
The WCRC fielded three teams: a women’s masters, a men’s masters, and a women’s seniors. “Normal people would never come
out on a morning like this,” said women’s
team coordinator Laurie Gaudreau. “That
speaks volumes about the type of person
competing for the WCRC.”
“Today was the ultimate in bad hair days,”
added Julie Haynes who competed for the
women’s masters. “You could wear a hat
but then you end up looking like Bozo the
Clown in the club photo.”
Pillars of the Running Community: Apr ès Beer Tent, the zany antics of Rick
Bayko, Dan Maguire, Nick DeFusco, Louise Valois, Annie Kucharski and
Laurie Gaudreau continued in the soaking r ain!
Road racing legend Bob Strout managed an
eighth place in his age group (55-59),
collecting three points in the individual
standings, despite racing the WCRC’s
April’s Fools four miler the previous
day.“Anyone who knows me understands
what my weekends are like,” acknowledged
Strout. “So far in 2014 I’ve run 643 races.
My goal is one million before I hang it up.
That leaves me twenty years to run the remaining 23,218 races.”
(continued next page!)
Page 12
(An Ras Mor—continued!)
“You have to start young to achieve a goal like that,” said Matt Valli, first in for
the Circle in 17:31. “I’m already over the hill at 26. Fortunately for Bob, he
learned to run before he could walk. That gave him a big advantage. He ran his
first road race when he was two and a half years old.”
For veteran Ann Kucharski, who has run her share of races, the inclement
conditions helped knit Circle members into an even tighter group.
“We were standing around with our beers, all of us drenched rats, shivering and
soaked to the bone, and I thought: It just doesn’t get any better than this, except
maybe if I had a beer in my other hand.”

USATF-NE Designates High Street Mile: “Showcase Race”
November 13, 2013
Brandeis University
by Dennis Donoghue
When WCRC Coach Mike McCormick was asked to present the High Street Mile to the USATF-NE
Long Distance Running Committee in November for consideration as one of the Grand Prix’s seven
races for 2014, he put together a power point long on highlights (including Pat Fullerton’s historic
sub-four mile last August) - and short on boring details. It was the most succinct presentation on an
evening that saw long-winded race directors blabber on about their pride-and-joys as if they were
discussing their own children.
When McCormick took his seat afterward there was a palpable sense in the room that the HSM would indeed be included on one of
the four ‘slates’: each slate contains seven races; some races are listed on more than one slate. These slates would come up for a
USATF member vote a week later.
That was not to be the case. Instead, for the first time ever, the committee created a new category with no bearing on Grand Prix
team or individual scoring. The first race named in this new category? The HSM. A consolation prize of sorts, if you will.
A member survey apparently had some bearing on the status of the HSM in terms of earning a position on one of the slates.
Though some kinks had yet to be worked out, such as the possibility of a wider start to accommodate larger numbers, those were
far from insurmountable.
“I was surprised,” said McCormick. “They invited us to present. You would think under the circumstances we’d have a decent
shot. But I guess the survey responders had some concerns regarding logistics that influenced the committee.”
So the High Street Mile, in lieu of earning a spot on a slate, has been designated a Showcase Race by USATF-NE. In the words of
the committee “these races will be promoted by the USATF-NE and members are encouraged to participate in them…our goal is
for members to experience quality events which may not be as well known as other races popular with Grand Prix participants.”
“It’s not what we’d hoped but the designation certainly helps both the race and the club,” added McCormick. “With this added
publicity the race will continue to grow and be a great experience for runners of all ages. All in all the USATF-NE did us a big
favor in deciding to showcase the HSM. Committee member Tom Derderian thought it ought to be considered the New England
road mile championship. ”

Great Scott! Terrific Trot
Gaudreau Tops At WTT
24th Annual Greater Newburyport Wild Turkey Trot
by Dennis Donoghue
On a cold blustery Thanksgiving morning, race director and WCRC President
Scott Walsh sur veyed a cr oss countr y cour se that would soon have
hundreds of harriers spread out over it. The previous day sheets of rain had
soaked the landscape. Overnight a cold front had swept in. Walsh sipped a cup
of coffee the size of a frappe. He needed the caffeine, and then some. Around
him WCRC volunteers parked cars, handed out race numbers and took tee shirt
sizes, all the while hopping from foot to foot in a futile attempt to generate body
heat. Walsh was well aware that a race director’s job matched that of an air
traffic controller in terms of stress. Just because everything seemed to be going
as planned, didn’t mean everything would go as planned.
Later he’d looked back on those moments and wondered why he’d felt any
concern. With the army of WCRC workers dispatched to cover every
conceivable detail, including doling out hot chocolate to both runners and
spectators before the race, the 24th Annual greater Newburyport Turkey Trot was
an event for the entire family, pets included (just how did that dog get in the race
anyway?).
“From the flag wavers to the course marshals to the medal dispensers, everyone
worked under pretty ridiculous conditions,” Walsh noted. “The fact that they
were all smiling has me convinced there was something in the hot chocolate
other than cocoa.”
Fashion, Form, Function:
Champ Laurie Gaudreau forwent
the ‘gobbler hat’ for aerodynamic
considerations.
Footing over the rolling terrain turned out not to be an issue. In fact, the WCRC’s own Laurie Gaudreau found
her way to the finish line in a new course record, chopping over half a minute off the previous mark.
“It’s been a while since I set a course record,” admitted a surprised Gaudreau, “A month at least. It’s not
something you really plan to do. The one thing I had planned for today was to try a new recipe for turkey
stuffing with green grapes and Tabasco sauce.”
Other Circle members also had banner days. Bob Strout, who would run five races in eight days, won the
senior age group. “I felt good,” Strout said. “I ran barelegged. I almost ran shirtless. But I never run without
mittens. Too damn cold.”
In the masters division, Gregory Putnam outdueled fellow co-worker Derek Dorval, with Putnam winning the
entire race outright and Dorval following in fourth.
“Like an idiot I bet Greg my parking space at work,” lamented Dorval. “Now I’m stuck in some godforsaken
satellite lot. I’ll end up putting in more miles just getting in on time so maybe he did me a favor.”
Neither athlete was daunted by the long climb at the two mile mark. In single file, runners worked their way
to the summit with the sun on their faces and the wind at their backs.
“All I could hear was the roar of my lungs as I sucked oxygen,” said Heidi Hatch, second in the 30-39 age
group. “My form went straight to hell. I looked down and saw these little T-Rex arms.”
(continued on next page!)
Page 14
RUNNERS RAG
(Wild Turkey Trot—continued!)
For Allie Jones, also second in her age group (60-69), it was the hill which led to the back stop with a half
mile to go that left an indelible imprint on her brain.
“I burst into tears when I looked up,” she recounted. “I forced myself to keep my eyes on the ground. That
way all I had to look at was frozen drool on my chin.”
As the gallant 400 proceeded around the soccer fields and downshifted up the final hill and around the
paddock for the sprint into the chute, a satisfied Walsh saw before him another successful endeavor. Once
everyone has their keepsake medals, he finally had a chance to relax. Instead, he began planning for next
year:
“I’m thinking we need bigger medals,” he said. “Wouldn’t it be something to have people strut out of here
with medals the size of dessert plates around their necks? It is Thanksgiving after all. Imagine the looks
you’d get sliding a slab of pie right on that baby. I’m going to see what the board thinks of that.”
With that, he headed over the hot chocolate cauldron, hoping for something with a bit more of a kick than his
coffee.

February 23, 2014
The kick-off race in the Wild Rover

20 members of Circle Nation toed the
line, and 2 WCRCers took home
hardware:
Larry Fowle was up fr ont and
serious, crossing in 4th overall in
16:48 (5:37) good for 1st in the
M30-39 age category!
Annie Kucharski was the 3r d

Circle Puts On Clinic At Frigid Fiver
Frigid Fiver, Newburyport MA
February 2, 2014
Out of the 317 runners that ran the Frigid Fiver, 40 were members of Circle Nation,
and they put a serious hurt on the field. Three in the Top-10, and seven in the Top20! But it was the list of hardware winners that is most impressive, as 15 members
took to the podium like Viking raiders. Our 1st placers: Chris Grange, 1st M30-39,
Susannah Landreth, 1st F40-49, Chris Kealey, 1st M40-49, Cam Leonard, 1st M019, Nancy McCarthy, 1st F60-69, Carmela Taveras, 1st F50-59, Laura Seddon, 1st
F20-29, and Bob Strout, 1st M50-59. Our 2nd placers: Kelly Bradbury, 2nd F40-49,
Albert Manzi, 2nd M60-69, John Webber, 2nd M50-59, and Pam Houck, 2nd F6069. Our 3rd placers were Larry Fowle, 3rd M30-39, Matt Valli, 3rd M20-29, and for
the sweep in F40-49 - Madelyn Steeves, 3rd! Incroyable! -RR
Young, Fast, Cool: WCRCer s Keith LeBlanc, Laura Seddon, Josh ‘tbodiesel’

Circle North trained their guns on Cape
Elizabeth 10-miler this past winter, and hit their mark with eagle-eye accuracy!
This race sells out lickety-split, but nineteen WCRCers toed the line regardless.
Five of the said nineteen made it on the podium—impressive considering the
challenging elevation gain baked into this dastardly yet beloved course.
Our 1st place heroes include the triumphant return of Ellie Tucker, tops in
F50-59 age, and Polly Kenniston was best in F70-79!
Our 2nd place folk were Carol Legere in the F60-69 gang, and Barbara Buck in
the F50-59 age category.
Finally, we can’t have an awards ceremony without Phil Pierce darkening the
podium with his shadow (3rd in M70-79).

Martha’s Vineyard 20 Miler
February 15, 2014
26 WCRCers ran up and down
the killer hills of the famed
Derry 16. Some in prep for
Boston; others love the
challenge and tradition. After the dust[ing of snow] settled,
four of our athletes took home hardware to brag about!
Chris Grange was on-podium, 3rd overall at an incredible
6:11 average clip over this daunting course. Nancy McCarthy
was 1st in F60-69, and Phil Pierce took 1st in the M70+
category. Vicki Miller was no slouch either, taking 2nd in the
F60-69 gang. Awards were bottles of NH maple syrup!
-RR
Six WCRCers crossed the Atlantic over to
Martha’s to run the MV20, a ‘No Weenies’ kind of event. If you
don’t like the potential for rough seas, ice, snow or high winds,
Martha’s may not be for you. One WCRCer who is never a
weenie is Sinthy Kounlasa, who took crushed her competition and
captured 1st in F50-59 age group, after the 20 mile distance was
complete! -RR

Great Eight at Black Cat 20/10
March 1, 2014
Eight WCRC members did battle at the Black Cat races; a choice of 20or a ‘fun-run’ of 10 miles. Chris Grange was 5th overall at the 10, and
grabbed 2nd in age (M30-39) at a crushing 5:40 pace! Meanwhile, our
crazy 20 runners Deb Johnson took 2nd in F50-59, and Madelyn Steeves
was a fine 3rd in
F40-49.

winter training in NH if they don’t
have to. So why not jet to Cape Coral
FL for a 5K run/century ride
weekend? They did just that on
January 18th and 19th, at the Tour de
Cape! Br uce took 2nd overall at
the 5K race on Saturday in a zippy
19:20.6 (6:13) Following up his
domination at the run, the next
morning Bruce was astride his steed
for 100 miles of outside winter road
riding in shorts. As reward for his

Thawing Out in Naples
Naples Half Marathon
January 19, 2014
A contingent of frozen and thirsty WCRCers took their annual trip to
Naples FL for a long weekend at the aptly named Naples Half
Marathon. This weekend is a mixed bag of ser ious-to-not-so-serious
running; most of the focus was on beach-time, riding water-taxis to
outdoor watering holes, and watching the Patriots with other New England
escapees. Vicki Miller was one of the more serious runners, nabbing 2nd in
F60-69 age group, and getting to wear shorts in January! -RR

Whether it is her 11th Boston Marathon or qualifying for Ironman 70.3 World Championships,

Something that did not escape the editor notice was Sinthy

April Fools 4 Miler
March 29, 2014
Race #4 on the Loco Sports WRFB Series!
When race directors Dale Eckert and Laurie Gaudreau were scheming up the 33rd Annual April Fools 4 Miler months ago, did they
envision the Circle Nation Tour de Force that would unveil on race day? Did they expect WCRC members taking both top male/
female spots? Did they predict flowing amber rivers of Smuttynose Shoals Pale Ale that simply never ran out, quenching the mighty
thirst the Will Run for Beer Faithful?!
The fourth stop on the WRFB tour, the April Fools 4 Miler not only stayed true the Loco Code of ‘race hard, party with your friends’
- it also evolved into a solid showcase for WCRC talent. Proof? 50% of the top 10 runners were WCRC, and convincing outright
victories by our members.
On the men’s side, Pat ‘Fulla’ Fullerton led coast-tocoast, chesting the line at a mighty 4:55 pace.
Lauretta Bailin was tops at the women’s battle,
crossing before all others in a convincing 6:17 pace!
Our WCRC speedsters also came to taste victory,
filling their cups with quenching age group titles.
We start with our tops-in-age, which reads like a
who’s-who in our fast-twitch tome: Chris Kealey
was best in M45-49; Cam Leonard was #1 in
M01-14, Rick Walsh was king of M55-59, and Kelly
Bradbury was queen of F45-49!

Our age group champions list is a long one—and it includes Amanda McCaughey, champ of F20-29! Julie Hanes was ruler of
F55-59; young speedster Madeline Quigley was champ of the F15-19; Janet Parkinson lorded over the F60-64 gang; Byron
Petrakis dominated over M70-74; and fast youth Sheila Cramphorn was queen of F01-14!
Our second-place age group award winners is a horn of plenty—starting with the mighty front-runner Chris Grange, 2nd in
M30-34, 2nd WCRCer and 3rd overall. Colby Nixon raced his usual scorcher: 2nd in M20-29, 4th WCRCer, and 6th overall.
Keith LeBlanc took 2nd in the M35-39 age gang, 5th WCRCer to cross the line. Bob Strout is always in the mix, and 2nd in
M55-59 is Stouty consistency. Madelyn Steeves, our new quickster in F45-49, took 2nd in that category. Laura Seddon is a tower
of running power and 2nd in F20-29 is a fine example. Hero Heidi Hatch hauls in awards wherever she races, and her 2nd in
F35-39 proves it yet again. Maryann MacNeil was magnificent at the F50-54 competition, taking 2nd. Venerable Stephen Viegas
took a 2nd in the M65-59 category, and Phenomenal Philip Pierce rounds out our 2nd place getters—2nd in M70-74.
Rounding out our award winners, our 3rd place age groupers start with Todd Gerrish in M50-54, Vicki Miller in F60-64, and the
legend Robert Randall, 3rd in M75-79.
A monster “thank you!” absolutely must go to: directors Dale, Dale Ann, and Laurie for the countless hours of work to build the
April Fools machine; thanks to all our WCRC volunteers who make the machine pur r like a kitten; thanks to the Winners
Circle Sports Bar family for their hospitality; thanks to Loco Sports/St. Laurent family for a fantastic 4th stop on the
WRFB tour; and thanks to Smuttynose for the bottomless barrels of amber nectar we so adore– bring on Spring! -RR

Boston Globe Gives Strength To Boston Strong—April 10th 2014
On April 10th, the Boston Globe printed a comprehensive article titled ‘After Bombing, They Run to Remember’ - giving
coverage to our 2nd annual Greater Newburyport Boston Strong 2.62 mile fun run. The Globe printed some great quotes from a
few members of the organizing team, including Valerie Natoli-Paquette, Mike McCormick, Cheryl Burkinshaw, WCRC
President Scott Walsh and Calli Towne. In the article, the team expressed the impact of the bombings, how it sprung them into
action, and why the second annual event is just as important as the first annual.
After the 2013 NBPT Boston Strong run, the team’s hard work produced an incredible
$15,000 contribution to the One Fund.

Historical Running ‘Myles’ in Plymouth
November 17, 2013— Special Report By Curt Lintvedt
The 2nd annual Myles Standish Marathon took place on Sunday, November 17th 2013. I drove down to Plymouth Mass on
Saturday afternoon, checked into my hotel, and then found Bayside Runner, the local running store, to pick up my race number.
Once back at the hotel, I went for a walk along the harbor looking for Plymouth Rock. I found it, and was totally underwhelmed -just a 4-foot boulder that someone (a Pilgrim?) chiseled ‘1620’ into! Oh well, in spite of the rock, Plymouth does have historical
significance as the first colony in New England.
On my way back to the hotel, I stopped at the Blue-Eyed Crab for an early pre-race dinner. The restaurant was recommended by a
volunteer at the running store. It was my kind of carbo loading... excellent fish & chips, corn bread, and 2 pints of ‘Gansett!
The race started at 8:00 AM. School buses drove us from the finish area to
the start in Myles Standish State Park. It was cold and windy at the start,
but it warmed up as the sun climbed in the sky, and the trees provided
some shelter from the wind. The first 15 miles were run in the park on
paved, low-traffic roads before heading back to the finish at the high
school. It was a surprisingly challenging course -- all rolling hills, except
for a flat unpaved road between miles 19 and 21. I knew by mile 5 that it
was going to be a long day for me. Of course, the steepest hill was the last
half mile up to the high school! Even though I wasn’t doing the dead
man’s walk, as my finish time may indicate, I completed my 258th
marathon in 4:45:51. I’m taking the rest of the year (2013) off!
Happy Trails! - CL

Brew-ha-ha At Beer City USA!
Asheville Marathon
March 16, 2014
Three WCRCers traveled down to the 2nd annual Asheville Marathon in Asheville NC. They were there for some warmth, the
sights from the heights of the Smokey mountains, and to trod on the trails of the Biltmore Estate, AKA “America’s Downton
Abbey”. Asheville NC is also known as ‘Beer City USA’, taking the title officially from Portland OR when the number of
microbreweries in-town crested the 21 mark. WCRCers can’t resist warm places in winter called ‘Beer City’ - alas, on race day, a
cold front and soaking rain storm swept in. Much of the course is on trails, so muck and streams were a factor.
Undaunted, Lisa Hart cruised through the conditions to a superb 4:06:35—good for 2nd in age group F50-54! Louise Valois and
Nick Paquette tr ail stomped their way together to a 4:46:35. Volunteer s wrapped you in a sweet finisher s fleece blanket
before hitting up sponsor Sierra Nevada for post-event ‘electrolyte replacement’. After cleaning up, our heroes hit up local
microbrew at Wicked Weed, High Wire, and 12 Bones BBQ! If you like quality suds and ‘away games’ - go get some AVL!
