Volume 35, No. 2 OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE WINNER’S CIRCLE RUNNING CLUB September, 2014 Covering WCRC Like Sunscreen Fullerton Goes 4-for-4 in Speed Series Beating the Street High Street Mile Newburyport, MA August 3, 2014 It all started last November, when race director Coach Mike McCormick went before the USATF New England board. He was there to plead the case that the High Street Mile should be included in the annual Grand Prix series; a 7 race format spanning distances short (5K) to long (marathon). Pat Fullerton’s incredible sub-4 time at the 2013 High Street Mile flew in the face of the foam, color and mud run infestation, causing Coach Mike to decree: “speed is back!” Surgin’ General: Pat Fullerton surges at a critical point in the High Street Mile USATF-NE Men’s Heat. Matthew Muise photo In this Issue: Super Spring/Summer Success The USATF-NE board was impressed. So Mmmm..marathons impressed—they voted the High Street Mile as the 2014 New England One Mile Championship. This put pressure on the Three Kings of the High Street Mile: Coach Mike, Copius Tri-Season Bids WCRC VP Dave Carroll and Treasurer Tom Chase - to build a perfect beast. It also put pressure on Mr. Fullerton—reigning champion and current top cat in the WCRC Ridiculously Hilly Things 4-3-2-1 Speed Series, to successfully defend. Stacks of all-aged athletes descended on High Street the morning of August 3rd. Questions Kids who crush competition needed answering: who would win the USATF-NE titles? Who would win their respective 4-3-2-1 Speed Series titles? Would another sub-4 performance happen? All of this and Grab a spoon, dig in! more would be answered through only a few minutes of pain. (continued on page 3!) Heats of Strength! Official Starter Coach John Boyle and false start watchman Dave LaBrode send the USATF Men’s Heat on their way to a tacticians race. WCRC had 2 excellent performances—ladies first: Alex Mackie absolutely torched High Street in a superb 6:21.1, good for 2nd in age, F13-15. Our next athlete of note is the quick Cameron Leonard, who left tire-tracks on High Street, crossing in 5:02.8 and seizing 2nd place in M13-15. Next up are the results of our adult heats, and the USATF-NE bests. Our number ones must start with young flyer Madeline Quigley, who bested the entire super-competitive F16-19 age gang in 5:52.5. Masters ace Kelly Bradbury took the lead as best female F40-49, and held it, crossing in 5:47. Carmela Taveras schooled the seniors, F50-59, in a blazing 6:04.9. Who was our best man? After 4 minutes and 3 seconds of tense strategic racing, defending champ Pat ‘Fulla’ Fullerton crossed the line in first; settling many things: defending his HSM title, becoming champion of the USATF-NE Mile, and winning all 4 races in the 4-3-2-1 Speed Series—a first in its short history. WCRC had plenty of people poised on the podium—such as ‘Captain Awards-Getter’ Chris Grange, in the mix with the big boys in 4:35.7, and 2nd in M30-39. Laurie ‘LG’ Gaudreau duked it out with the best women and found herself 2nd in F40-49, in 5:55.8. The super-septuagenarian Phil Pierce races all distances, so it’s no surprise he took 2nd in M70-79 in 7:45.9—the surprise is, who the heck beat him? Stalker Finds WCRC in the Adult Heat! Rounding out our award winners, Julie ‘Justice’ Haynes ran a heater of a mile, 6 LARRY FOWLE 4:48.6 crossing in 6:29.4 for 3rd in F50-59. Bobby Strout is another perpetual age 10 MATT THOMAS 5:08.0 group grappler, snagging a 3rd in M50-59 in 5:49. Finally, the incomparable 15 ROB KABERLE 5:28.8 Bob Randall was on hand to do battle, and got on podium after an 8:41 time 16 MIKE LEIGH 5:30.4 good for 3rd in M70-79. Thanks to an ‘all-hands-on-deck’ WCRC volunteer army, the miler minions were dispatched successfully down High Street into the legendary finish line, voiced by Coach Mike McCormick. Hot dogs, drinks and awards passed out, followed by the 4-3-2-1 Awards party organized by John Webber, back in Salisbury at the Winners Circle Sports Bar. Thirst quenching adult beverages were supplied by NBPT Brewing Co. in honor of a successful HSM and 4-3-21; thanks to all racers and volunteers for an incredible series! -RR Stalker Finds WCRC in the Kids Heat! 2 CAMERON LEONARD 22 ALEX MACKIE 148 SHEILA CRAMPHORN 5:02.8 6:21.1 8:08.8 WCRC Sons and Daughters Dept.! 195 JACK MCCARTHY 8:56.3 Stalker Finds WCRC in the USATF-NE Heat! 1 6 7 8 10 13 13 22 23 24 25 27 28 30 PAT FULLERTON KELLY BRADBURY MADELINE QUIGLEY LAURIE GAUDREAU CARMELA TAVERAS CHRIS GRANGE JULIE HAYNES PETER HESLAM STEVEN LECOURS DAN MAGUIRE BOB STROUT JIM BAILEY PHILIP PIERCE ROBERT RANDALL 4:03.1 5:47.6 5:52.5 5:55.8 6:04.9 4:35.7 6:29.4 5:31.7 5:35.0 5:45.1 5:49.0 7:36.1 7:45.9 8:41.2 17 19 21 24 28 32 36 37 42 44 47 54 57 59 61 63 64 65 66 70 73 74 75 76 78 81 92 93 96 97 116 BETH DOLLAS 5:31.2 LAURETTA BAILIN 5:33.2 RICK WALSH 5:34.6 TONY AMES 5:38.6 ALAN SOUCY 5:54.7 MAUREEN MOORE 5:58.4 HEIDI HATCH 6:03.1 KRISTEN MACKIE 6:03.1 MADELYN STEEVES 6:18.0 KIM SPINNEY 6:21.3 BRIAN SHORT 6:30.5 RON FEDECHKO 6:50.6 JESSICA SOUCY 6:52.4 PATRICIA LAVOIE 6:57.0 STEPHANIE THOMAS 7:00.5 CALLI TOWNE 7:02.5 SANDRA GORDON 7:03.3 JANET PARKINSON 7:05.9 ROCHELLE L'ITALIEN 7:06.1 HOLLY ALLISON 7:14.8 DOUG ZECHEL 7:22.4 JODI SHORT 7:23.6 BETSY BERKENBUSH 7:24.5 JOHN WERMERS 7:24.7 RHONDA SHELTRY 7:33.2 SHARON YU 7:51.8 JANE LEMUTH 8:14.0 ROSE WASHAK 8:16.6 GILBERT EMERY 8:18.8 SHARON CHASE 8:23.2 JOANNE RATCLIFFE 10:40.3 WCRC Sons and Daughters Dept.! 7 39 48 58 JACOB GAUDREAU DEREK L'ITALIEN WESLEY L'ITALIEN AUDREY STEEVES 4:52.2 6:08.1 6:30.7 6:53.8 Page 4 RUNNERS RAG The Big Take-Back Circle Celebrates Boston The 118th Boston Marathon by Dennis Donoghue Clearly, this was no ordinary Boston. When The Circle bus pulled into Hopkinton a bit after 7 a.m. on Patriot’s Day, it was directed to a satellite lot some distance behind the high school. Soon other club buses accommodating the increased field were squeezed in next to it while surveillance helicopters flew low overhead. K-9 units, hazmat teams and hundreds of cops from cities and towns all over the state stood watch. Despite the heightened vigilance, none of it was overbearing. After the tragedy of a year ago everyone involved in keeping the world’s most famous road race safe seemed to be paying a debt of gratitude to all those having to endure metal detection simply to get to the starting line. There were, fortunately, moments of levity that took the edge off of what would surely be an emotional day. Take, for example, the gang of college kids on the front lawn of a private residence which runners passed on the way to their corrals. The jokers had constructed a booth topped by a sign: FREE BEER, DONUTS, CIGARETTES. They were more than willing to serve those in need. It was brilliant theater provoking plenty of chuckles. “How much says those kids will be passed out by the time my wave goes off?” asked Michael Lacombe. For Lacombe’s group of Circlers assigned to Wave 2, a beer, a donut--and perhaps even a cigarette--were preferable alternatives to the 26.2 miles of warming macadam stretching before them. Earlier predictions had hinted at a cooler day with scattered cloud cover. Bus coordinator Vicki Miller, leaving no detail uncovered, announced up-to-the-minute forecasts during the pre-race downtime: “It was supposed to be 53 and partly sunny an hour before the start. Now it’s 58 and sunny.” “What does that mean?” asked Lisa Rohr. “It’s going to be hot,” interpreted Miller. “And it’s going to be sunny.” Bottles of sunscreen were handed around. After a winter of dressing in layers to protect against Arctic chill, Circle denizens noted the cruel irony, being well-versed in what makes Boston the toughest of marathons. “I don’t know what I was thinking,” said a sunburned Laurie Gaudreau who two days earlier had been lying on a beach in Aruba. “This will be like going from the frying pan into the fire.” Gaudreau, who would go on to run a noteworthy 3:34 under the adverse conditions, would later give credit to the tropical island. “I tapered with a Dushi Aruba in one hand and a bottle of Balashi in the other,” she confessed. “The Marathon was actually a piece of cake after what I put myself through on vacation.” With crowd numbers close to a million and weather conditions necessitating frequent fluid stops, runners were able to distract themselves from the weighted memories of a year ago. It wasn’t until ‘Right on Hereford, left on Boylston’ and the sight of the iconic finish that relief, gratitude and reflection finally rose to the surface. “It all happened at once,” noted Joe Gurczak, who squeezed in just under three hours (2:59:03) and finished 156th in his age group. “I had a lump in my throat when that medal went around my neck. I also had a lump in my left calf the size of a baseball.” “It didn’t seem real,” added Kate Winslow, who crossed in an impressive 3:50:42. “I looked around at everyone and tried to bring it all into focus. Fortunately I was in so much discomfort I couldn’t think straight. That’s the beauty of completing Boston. You’re totally detached from reality.” RUNNERS RAG Page 5 As Circle members began arriving at The Pru and were processed through the finish area, they made their way in ones and twos back to The Lenox where room coordinators Linda Long and cousin Jamie Amsler waited on the eighth floor. As finishers entered the lobby, they were saluted with cheers worthy of their celebrity status. “When I heard the applause I turned around, thinking maybe Joey McIntyre or Nancy Morales had walked in,” said Kelly LeCours (3:19:44, 55th in her age group). “But it was just little old me. Then someone from the security detail pulled a cold beer out of a tub of ice and handed it to me before leading me to the elevator. I felt as if I owned the place.” That feeling was shared by the rest of those in blue and gold as they speed-showered, refueled on a banquet of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, Swedish fish, and cheese curls and attempted in vain to get up and down unassisted. By six o’clock they were ready to exit the room and reunite with their bus parked a mile away due to street restrictions. It had been the type of day which defied categorization--part exhaustion, part emotional overload, part accomplishment, and perhaps the biggest part of all--joy at having played a role in the mending of America’s greatest city and the restoration of the world’s most renowned road race. -DD Farren Well, Après : Kate and Maureen Farren beam on Boylston after 26.2 miles on the road to Boston. RUNNERS RAG Page 7 2014 Series Race #4—Ribfest 5 The Ribfest Five June 15, 2014 by Dennis Donoghue At the Anheuser Busch brewery a dozen Clydesdales watched from their stables as competitors lined up for race #4 in this year’s USATF-NE Road Racing Grand Prix. The buzz circulating from stall to stall wasn’t strictly from the flies. Why, the majestic animals pondered, was there no Clydesdale division in such a prestigious series? Perhaps the reason lay in the fact that with well over two thousand two-legged mammals squeezed cheek to jowl into the narrow start, there wasn’t a square inch of space left over for another man, woman or beast. It was the Ribfest’s first foray into the series. The five mile course was out-and-back, mostly flat but hardly fast due a steady headwind. Being June, heat was a bit of a factor, though the humidity was low. A van load of Circle devotees made the one hour pilgrimage to America’s famous brewery, ostensibly to run the race. Those who’d registered early were granted monogrammed bibs, their first names displayed in caps above their numbers. “All race long when spectators called my name I turned and waved,” said Dan Maguire. “I must have done that twenty times. It was like being on a carnival ride. I was dizzy as hell by the finish.” Lacking sufficient numbers to field team in any division, the Circle had to settle for strong individual performances. Laurie Gaudreau had run the Market Square 10k the previous day, her goal being to build up enough strength to run Hartford in the fall and drop her Boston qualifying time from 3:34 to 3:15. “That’s the plan anyway,” she said. “I’m to the point in my life where I have to make running my top priority, ahead of family, work, and friends. I don’t want to look back and wonder ‘what if’. I won’t be 45 forever.” Rick Bayko, inventor of the Polish Rifle, is in fourth place in the USATF-NE 65-69 age group standings. He once hoofed Boston in 2:20:56 and later published a book cataloguing his running injuries. Recently he completed a second volume and has plans for a third. “I’m still moving because I’ve always lived according to one maxim: whenever I hear a gunshot I run like hell,” he said. “He took off like one of the horses,” observed Sarah Prescott. “As soon as the gun went off he spooked and ran in the opposite direction until I shouted for him to turn around. He ran an extra hundred meters which had to have hurt his time.” “The start was nuts,” added Laurie Gagnon. “And it wasn’t only because of Rick. You could barely move, then we turned and climbed a hill which spit us out onto a highway. It looked like half the city of Merrimac was already in front of me.” Though the Circle members may not have been among the top finishers, they made up for it by being first in line at the beer tent. (continued next page!) Page 8 RUNNERS RAG (Ribfest, continued!) Attached to the bottom of each bib number were two tickets redeemable not for the usual lite beer swill found at most road races but for batches of robust microbrews like Goose Island IPA (“Old World Style, New World Flavor”). Non-runners attending the Ribfest had to pony up five buck a beer. Runners thus received a thirty percent reimbursement on their entry fee in the form of hops, once a medium of exchange in the ancient world. Men’s team coordinator John Webber, who’d rolled out of his sick bed after suffering from a bronchial infection all week, reflected on the day’s events as he sipped his second brew in the shade of the beer tent. “What we lacked in numbers we made up for in effort. Now we need to get those numbers back up to where they once were. The club reimburses three races and pays the USATF membership fee on top of it. Maybe that’s not enough. Maybe we need to throw in a case or two of Goose Island to seal the deal. I’ll have to mention it to the Board of Directors at our next meeting.” -DD Stalker Finds WCRC at Ribfest 2014! 253 277 285 316 326 856 951 1277 DENNIS JOHN LAURIE RICK DAN JANET PHILIP CHRISTINE DONOGHUE WEBBER GAUDREAU BAYKO MAGUIRE PARKINSON PIERCE PLANTE 34:00 34:41 34:38 35:26 35:36 45:35 46:41 50:19 WCRCers who ran for other clubs: 86 DAVE DUNHAM 228 ROBERT RIVARD 251 KELLY LECOURS 331 Stephen Peckiconis 373 MICHAEL DEE 454 STEPHEN VIEGAS 500 SARAH PRESCOTT 700 DAMIAN ROWE 809 MIKE STANWYCK 926 MICHAEL ANDREOTTOLA 1017 LAURIE GAGNON 6:51 6:57 6:56 7:07 7:11 9:11 9:25 10:26 28:34:00 33:31:00 34:05:00 35:50:00 36:45:00 38:03:00 39:12:00 43:15:00 44:53:00 46:05:00 47:44:00 5:44 6:44 6:51 7:12 7:24 7:42 7:57 8:43 9:04 9:22 9:39 Dan ‘Mags’ McGuire, Rick ‘Polish Rifle’ Bayko, Laurie ‘elG’ Gaudreau, Dennis “DoubleD’ Donoghue, and John ‘JWeb’ Webber look daisy fresh—either because this is a ‘before’ picture, or they eat 5 milers for breakfast. The article touched on a bit of Bob’s accomplishments, including a streak of 24 straight Boston Marathons (second only to WCRCer Steve Reed’s 25). Bob has also broken 2:50 at Boston three times. Bob’s marathon PR is a 2:49 at the Columbus Marathon, and his best 5K an 18:18 at Eliot. Bob has a total of 130 marathons to his credit, and more than 70 ultra-marathons. The best quote came from Portland’s Orlando Delogu, a fellow multi-marathoner: “His durability, times, the record he’s put together approaches that of the legends of Maine running; he’s right up there as a worthy Maine Running Hall of Fame candidate”. The second whistle stop on the 4-3-2-1 Speed Series tour is the namesake of her late grandmother Evelyn Emery - who was a WCRC card-carrying member. Thanks to these fast kids, Roses 2014 lived up to its inclusion in the speed series slogan: "Speed is Back". The Roses is a handicap event; women blast off first; then 2 minutes, 30 seconds later, the men are unleashed. The fastest mans job is to make up the difference and - hopefully - best the fastest woman to the line. In 2013, our best men were soundly trounced by the great Kara Haas, a certified speed demon and New England Runner 'Pub Series' champion. In 2014, Somerville Strider and USATF-NE Grand Prix series gazelle Larissa Park, was right up front. She had with her local speedsters Lauretta Bailin, Kelly Bradbury and Carmela Taveras. It didn't look good for our men... until one scanned the crowd of 165 athletes, and noticed the lithe sub-4 miler and defending High Street Mile champ Pat 'Fulla' Fullerton, along with hardware warriors Chris 'Long Range' Grange, Fast-Larry Fowle and Matt 'Cruising Altitude' Thomas. Suddenly, it was a whole new ballgame. Mr. Fullerton blasted off and ran down all, including Mrs. Park. Pat crossed the line in the handicapped time of 17:21; Mrs. Park hammered out a speedy 18:24 for second overall, including both men and woman! As for our age group results, our number-ones start with Pat Fullerton; top of the entire field, and king of the 18-29 combined category. Kelly Bradbury was best master male or female (40-49), and Janet Parkinson was queen of all 60-69. Carmela Taveras was 2nd in the combined 50-59 group, and Madelyn Steeves was second best master male or female (40-49). Chris Grange nabbed a 3rd for the 30-39 crowd, Peter Heslam was 3rd master (40 -49), Bob Strout got a third in 50-59, Tom Miller also third in 60-69. Philip Pierce usually wins it all in his AG but not this time - 3rd in 70-79, and young star Sheila Cramphorn was 3rd in the 13-17 combined age group. A benefit for two shelters, the Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center in NBPT, and A Safe Place in Portsmouth NH—thanks to Traci and her legion of WCRC volunteers, the Roses succeeded wildly. RUNNERS RAG Page 17 Pat Polletta 2 Miler Fulla Three-for-Three Salisbury, MA June 27, 2014 By Dennis Donoghue At the finish of this year’s Pat Pollotta 2 Miler, you got handed a complimentary towel to wave above your head in celebration or else to soak up tears over your dismal performance. If you neglected to explode from the gate to grab an advantage over the field of nearly 200, you paid dearly in the bottleneck before the madcap narrow-gauge sprint to the mile turn around. This club-sponsored annual early summer event is an out-and-back two miles of hard-packed gravel racing, much of it inside a tunnel of trees. A blinding setting sun greets you half a mile from the finish. It’s a race that’s over before it’s begun, a burst that burns the quads and sears the lungs. There’s nothing quite like Pat Polletta. “I should have worn a flak jacket,” said John Wermers, who cracked the 16 minute barrier. “At the start I caught half a dozen elbows. One of them happened to be my own.” If there is such a thing as contact racing, this is it. Run over Salisbury’s historic Ghost Trail, the course compels runners to make use of any strategy enabling them to squeeze around, under or above fellow competitors until the field has a chance to string itself out a bit. “Thank God no one wore spikes out there,” noted Lauretta Bailin whose 6:09 pace delivered her to the chute as the second woman. “Otherwise it’d get real nasty real fast.” Local star and former Haverhill Hilly Pat Fullerton of sub-four fame was first overall across the line in 9:36. A consummate professional, Fullerton is always working to give himself an edge. “I intended to use starting blocks to clip off a few tenths but I left them in the trunk when I jogged over from the parking lot,” he said. “Most people think I’m nuts, being a distance guy and all, but I think it’s a trend I think will catch on.” Circle legend Bob Randall broke twenty minutes comfortably. At 77, Randall can remember when locomotives sped up and down the rails on the Ghost Trail. (continued next page!) Pat ‘Fulla’ Fullerton en route to his 3rd win at the Speed Series. I go through cases of the stuff.” At the one mile turnaround, a cul de sac featuring a water stop, senior age group winner Maryann MacNeil was a bit surprised by her mile split. “I wasn’t expecting it to be that slow,” she said. “But someone told me there was a huge hill on the way back so I had to plan accordingly.” Post-race, depleted competitors chanced their luck crossing Route 110 to get to the festivities at the Winner’s Circle Sports Bar, where they refreshed themselves on microbrewed beers provided gratis with bib numbers. During the raffle, race director Tanya Anderson reflected on all that had gone into this year’s race. “As usual, our volunteers came out in droves to make this happen,” she said. “Of course, being from the club their minds were more on the post-race party than the actual race. They stampeded en masse over to the beer tent just as the last finisher crossed the line.” -DD Polletta Sidebar: the Incredibly Fast & Young Take note of these speedsters! Jacob 'JJ' Johns was a 2-mile specialist at North Andover high school track; after being seasoned with a year of NCAA Division 1 track and cross country, JJ brought the pain to the Polletta 2-miler, and revisit his old distance. Battling with the frontrunners, JJ was able to hold a mighty clip of 5:06 average pace, good for 10:12 and 4th overall: best in age M13-19. JJ wasn’t alone: our Cam Leonard took 2nd in the same division, M13-19, with a 11:01 (5:31 pace) - at an impressive 14 years old! For years now club coffers have received a boost following the Yankee Homecoming ten miler. For Team Circle, gathered pre-race under the blue tent below the finish chute, the strategy for 2014 was much the same as any other year--overwhelm opposition by sheer numbers. “Just look at us,” observed Rick Walsh, who would lead the 50+ squad to a third place finish. “Who wouldn’t be intimidated by such a large mob that happens to call itself a running club? Even I don’t want to be around the likes of these people.” In addition to the male seniors’ third place finish, the male masters took second, the male open fourth (out of 12 teams) and the veterans--wily geezers who know a thing or two about race tactics-- first. The women fared equally well. In the open division, they were fifth out of 11 clubs, in the masters second (out of 7), the seniors second (out of 5), and the 60+ division squad matched their gender counterparts by finishing first. On a beautiful night with the temperature hovering close to 80 and the humidity at a reasonable level for late July, the blue and gold delivered plenty of excitement to the partisan crowds spilling onto Market Street and lining the entire length of the course. “They start early,” said Keri Marshall who was first in for her masters team. “By the time I got to Market Square, the night was in full swing. I was handed all kinds of goodies. Some guy even asked me to dance.” Indeed, the Market Square crowd is well known for offering runners the usual road race amenities-orange slices, water, garden hoses--as well as some a bit more unusual. “Let’s just say this was the first time in my career I was offered a lit pipe,” said Joe McEachern who finished second on the masters team. “I know it’s legal in some states and I appreciate the generosity but laughing hysterically while trying to climb Water Street didn’t seem like something my body could handle.” On this particular summer night you were either running for the Circle or wish you were. Half the population of Newburyport claims membership and the other half just hasn’t gotten around to filling out the application yet. If these citizens weren’t hoofing it through Maudsley, they’d already taken a left in the 5k and were streaming toward the finish, or else they’d chosen to relax on their front lawns and pull cold ones out of coolers to hydrate fellow Circlers passing by. For top blue and gold male finisher Chris Grange, who secured 17th place overall by way of his 5:40 pace, the last couple of comfortably flat miles along High Street provided an opportunity to downshift and enjoy some Newburyport history. “The architecture along this street is just amazing,” he noted, “though I wouldn’t recommend a tour of the city at this pace. It’s harder to notice the more intricate details of the woodwork. Plus it’s probably safer on the sidewalk.” (continued next page!) Page 20 RUNNERS RAG (Yankee Homecoming—continued!) Stalker finds WCRC at YHC 10M! The top woman for the club was Beth Dollas who finished second (out of 94) in her age group. Over the last few years Dollas has evolved from a good runner to a stellar one. She ran an impressive Boston in the heat and has continued to build on her accomplishments. “Okay so I’m a fanatic,” she confessed. “There isn’t a website about the sport I haven’t spent hours on every day. I hang out in running stores. In my closet I have a dozen different styles of reflector vests. And don’t get me started on running shoes. I had my husband build an addition just for shelf space.” Alice McGonigle, who score on the masters, seniors and veterans teams, found the course challenging until she arrived at the six and a half mile mark just past the parking lot in Maudsley. “I love the downhill section best of all because I much prefer to run down than up. I often wonder why Mount Washington isn’t run in the opposite direction. That makes much more sense to me.” Overall, the evening provided a wealth of experiences for those in blue and gold. In the end, however, it was all about the money. “I don’t know the final tally,” said treasurer Tom Chase who finished second for the senior men. “Tonight after a few beers I’ll go over the books. But as usual, we did well enough to make me wonder like I always do whether they’ll invite us back next year.” -DD Stalker Finds WCRC at YHC 5K! 1 17 34 50 63 75 93 94 96 152 157 171 192 199 207 228 239 260 279 287 304 375 428 501 537 Pat Fullerton Cameron Leonard Dan Sawicki Daniel Spurling Bob Strout Kelly Bradbury Carmela Taveras Linda St Laurent Madeline Quigley Michael St Laurent Adam Nisson Joseph Colbert John Fish Rick Brown Kristen Mackie Maureen Carroll Tammy Carignan Stacey Harrison Richard Brown Alex Mackie Calli Towne Kara Brown Susan Mackie Kurt Bunting Ted Jones 15:04 17:38 19:03 19:41 20:09 20:36 21:05 21:06 21:08 22:15 22:20 22:32 22:52 22:57 23:05 23:21 23:30 23:43 23:53 23:59 24:11 25:02 25:27 26:03 26:18 4:51 5:41 6:08 6:21 6:30 6:38 6:47 6:48 6:48 7:10 7:12 7:16 7:22 7:24 7:26 7:31 7:34 7:38 7:42 7:44 7:47 8:04 8:12 8:23 8:28 570 650 668 680 694 696 701 741 754 757 783 824 934 937 947 1085 1184 1185 1199 1210 1246 1459 1520 1714 1778 1780 1916 Bruce Vogel Kristen Beyer-Schul Lynne Dumont David Peddie Jeannie Frash John Wermers Megan Ferguson Amanda Burnham Rhonda Sheltry David Labrode Jodi Short Kevin Condon Jeffrey Gilchrist Laurie Cyr Ted Cronin Melissa Manning Kay Cassidy Allie Jones Caroline Blackman Jeannine Stanley Leanne Corning Brian Surette Cat Cargill Mike Shields Wendy Phillips Joanne Ratcliffe Holly Mandigo-Aly 26:45 27:21 27:27 27:32 27:39 27:40 27:42 27:58 28:03 28:03 28:12 28:24 29:16 29:17 29:21 30:30 31:11 31:11 31:18 31:21 31:36 33:41 34:29 37:23 39:28 39:33 58:00 8:37 8:48 8:51 8:52 8:54 8:55 8:55 9:00 9:02 9:02 9:05 9:09 9:26 9:26 9:27 9:49 10:02 10:03 10:05 10:06 10:11 10:51 11:06 12:02 12:42 12:44 18:40 17 30 38 49 50 64 66 68 78 85 108 113 123 133 139 141 154 162 163 185 196 200 205 216 245 251 254 262 270 272 275 284 305 327 350 355 383 386 392 400 421 434 437 443 454 478 490 498 509 510 523 524 525 534 569 585 602 606 626 633 636 653 654 655 685 691 710 722 726 746 785 786 788 815 871 876 908 947 951 975 985 1008 1015 1034 1035 1049 1078 1105 1120 1137 1155 1164 1164 1178 1215 1222 Chris Grange Christopher Suprin Matthew Manning James Bailey Larry Fowle Chris Kealey Joe Gurczak Jordan Parkinson Joseph McEachern Keith Leblanc Beth Dollas Ryan Spinney Jean-Chris Bertrand Peter Heslam Susannah Landreth Matthew Thomas Rick Walsh Patrick Terrien Thomas Chase Dennis Donoghue Madelyn Steeves Michael Leonard Daniel Maguire Chris Clapp Kathleen Winslow Jim Bailey Amanda McCaughey Martin Frash Tony Myatt Donald Dwight Heidi Hatch Maryann MacNeil Kim Spinney Amy Mosca Julie Benson Rick Bayko Rob Loring Kimberly Coppinger Nicholas Thurlow David Carroll Tom Miller William Steele Gerard Beauchamp Brian Roderick Paul Comeau Dale Bob Eckert Brian Short Daryl Kincaid Ron Fedechko Jodi Bertrand Julie Haynes Michelle Zoeller Michael Gallagher Noreen Waddell Josh Thibault Jimmy Banyas Leah Hill Kimberly Dwight Michael Dee Paul Desroche Sean Bradley Leo Richard George Phelps Diana Clark Chris Sullivan Don Clarke Stephanie Suprin Vicki Miller Greg Hochmuth Sandy Gordon Janet Parkinson Jennifer Groskin Katherine Daugherty Mike Furlong John Elkaliouby Holly Allison Sharon Yu Sheila Fitzgerald Kathleen McWilliams Albert Manzi Pamela Houck Samantha Komiega Michael Andreottola Keith Kallberg Stephanie Thomas Jean Herrick Jane Lemuth Sharon Chase Jim Laprel Betsy Berkenbush Gail Clark Dale Granger-Eckert Dale Granger-Eckert Pamela H. WCRCer and race director Doug Zechel stokes the Saunders old-school flame: if you want a race shirt, you better finish in a top percentage of your age group! Post race refreshments? Right next to the beer truck. The race is held in the evening, but club competition was as fierce as the midday August sun: Coastal AA versus Millennium versus WCRC. Holding it all together, was the Voice of New England running: Andy Schachat. After the gun, our team was a factor: Chris Grange did battle and finished 3rd overall in 33:46 (5:27). Laurie Gaudreau was best in W40-49, with a 42:36 (6:53). The Great Lawson Noyes was on scene and took 1st in M70-79 with a savage 46:47.6 (7:33). Carmela Taveras was second in W50-59 in 44:15 (7:09). Alice McGonigle has been on fire in 2014, and kept the embers burning with her 2nd in W60-69, in 48:20 (7:48). Rounding out our award getters: Madelyn Steeves was 3rd in W40-49 in 43:38 (7:03), MaryAnn MacNeil snagged 3rd in W50-59 in 45:33 (7:21) and Janet Parkinson took 3rd in W60-69 in 50:14 (8:07). Prizes awarded to our winners included signed copies of local mystery author KD Mason, as WCRC mobbed the beer truck until it limped away dry. -RR Wheels Up: Our #1 Chris Grange at cruising altitude. Travels of Iron Tony Ironman 70.3 Malaysia April 13, 2014 Unable to stand winter any longer, Tony Martuni hopped on a long flight to Malaysia to compete in a super-early season Ironman 70.3 event. How did Iron Tony fare in the face of jet lag and no heat conditioning? He tore the bike up, sizzling 56 miles in 2:54 and finished in 6:35:24 after shrugging off heat and humidity! -RR WCRC Takes a Bite Out of The White [Mountain Triathlon] Sunday, June 8th, 2014 Franconia Notch, NH Our Iron Team never rests; in fact in the month of June they nary got a wink of sleep, putting two half Irons in their gullets during the long training month for Lake Placid. These guys believe the road to Ironman is paved with pain, so why not, as Bruce Lander says: do “the most difficult course ever”. Yes, the White Mountain Half Iron Triathlon is tough, but our team still notched big wins in the Notches of NH: all received 1st place age group finishes at the half distance: Bruce Lander (5:30:49), Steve Smith (5:58:25), Mary Smith (7:04:27). Tony Martuni won his AG in the Olympic Distance event in 2:34:02. -RR The Number Ones: Tony Martuni, Mary Smith and Sir Bruce Lander won their AGs at the rough WMT. Lori Lander photos. Talon Tastes Success MascomaMan Half Iron Triathlon July 26, 2014 WCRCer Sue Talon traveled to Enfield NH to race the MacomaMan half iron distance triathlon, and take a stab at glory! The result? A great time of 6:15:55, & 2nd in F55-59 age group! Fun fact: Mascoma Lake freezes in winter and has a max depth of 68 feet. Sue won a pint glass award—which Sue deservedly filled to the brim with a frosty local brew, and a max fill of 16 fluid ounces. Sue hoisting malt and Bottoms up Sue! -RR hops! Storms Can't Extinguish Forge of Iron Ironman Lake Placid Lake Placid, NY July 27, 2014 On Ironman Day in Lake Placid on July 27, 2014 thunderstorms interrupted the swim portion of this great ultra-distance triathlon. While some swimmers made it out of Mirror Lake in good time, many had to be pulled out after a single loop, and sent onto the second event, the bike. Undaunted, organizers and athletes kept moving forward and the Iron Show went on; the main decision being all athletes received a single-loop swim time. Our travelling Iron-Gang were back in Lake Placid to taste the pain and greatness of this area, but most importantly—get Bruce Lander his 15th Ironman. How did they fare? Braving hideous rain storms that plagued them on the bike and run, they still got it done. Sir Bruce Lander completed his mission in 10:48:25, KonaBoy Steve Smith crossed in a great 11:30:35 for his 8th Ironman, Mary Smith had a great day with her 13:30:11 for her 4th Ironman, and Robin Cucinotta finished with a great time 13:30:51 for her 3rd Ironman! Congrats to our athletes, who finish under all conditions! -RR No Easy Ironman: Bruce Lander, Steve Smith, Mary Smith and Robin Cucinotta battle elements of all kinds, all day. Milwaukee WI August 9, 2014 One of our true WCRC talents is really nailing it in triathlon! Lauretta Bailin of the Green Stride family, travelled to the USA Triathlon National Championships in Milwaukee WI, for the Olympic distance triathlon:1500 meter swim, 40K bike, and 10K run. Athletes battle within their 5-year age group categories, hoping to place well enough to represent the USA at the Worlds Championship in Chicago in 2015. How did Mrs. Bailin fare? She finished in a fantastic 2:19:13—made up of a 24:45 1500 swim, 1:07:51 40K bike (21.8mph!), and 42:33 10K (6:50 per mile!). Ironman Mont Tremblant Quebec, Canada August 17, 2014 From a picturesque ski-resort nestled in the Laurentian mountains, the 3rd annual Ironman Mont Tremblant was launched on Sunday August 17, 2014. This toughie of an Iron triathlon is tempered by incredible views, spirited Quebecois volunteers, delicious race banquet dinners, live entertainment - and fireworks! This venue is also a must for the those wishing to punch their Toughness Card. Awaiting the athletes like a crouching tiger is a single loop swim with a bit of chop at the turnaround, a bike with plentiful 15% grade pitches, and a run with a bit of everything to whittle you down. The most WCRCers ever in its 3 year history were on site in 2014, bracing for the unseasonable rain and cool temps, which blanketed the area in the 3 days prior to the race. On race day, clear skies prevailed but cooler temps remained. Pockets of showers drenched our heroes miserably late on the bike, and saturated them during the run. Braving it all, Kim Coppinger was our first WCRCer to the line; crushing the course and finishing her 2nd Ironman in a powerful 13:35:27. Louise Valois finished her 9th Ironman with a solid 13:59:13. Jodi Bertrand was a supporter for Iron-husband Jean-Chris in 2013, but it was her turn in 2014 to be on the shores of Lac Tremblant. Jodi had a fantastic first Ironman, completing her day in 14:08:18 and uncorked Champagne once complete. WCRC ultra-girl Amy Mosca eats 50-milers, so she had no problems with her 2nd Ironman, crossing in 14:41:23. Nick Paquette enjoyed his 'long catered training day' and cruised in his 12th Ironman at 15:03:40. Stacks of cheering spectators line a narrow chute like a high-fivin' sound chamber on your final approach to the finish. Beyond the best finish line in the biz (called by legend announcers Mike Reilly and Alain Cyr) awaited copious and refreshing Sleeman's Original Draft Ale, and a Poutine truck serving up French fries with cheese curd and gravy, along with the usual Iron-smorgasbord!
