It is no surprise that we know a lot about garden timber
products. We understand the importance of making the right
choice, from recommending the correct treatment standard
required for your project to the benefits of differing fencing
and panels or how to measure and fix a new gate hand built
to your individual needs. All you need do… is ask.

We care about the environment and operate to a strict
environmental management standard (ISO 140001). Our
policy is to use every part of the tree from the largest sections
through to the bark, chippings even to the sawdust. As
members of the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC), the raw
timber we purchase is from responsibly managed forests and
therefore offer FSC certified products.
Our reputation has been built on quality products, great value
and excellent customer service. We take pride in what we do,
so if you find fault with any of our products or services – let us

Introduction
2013 brings New Timber Treatment,
New Season Products & a whole lot more stock…
Over the winter we have carried out customer research. The
three things that have been overwhelmingly requested are:-

FOUNTAIN TIMBER HOLDS FSC
CERTIFICATION
•Introduced a standard range of planed Posts, Boards and
Battens in addition to bespoke milling
•Introduced cement, sand, stone and aggregates. New lines
and finishes in gate furniture.

Fountain joined the scheme in 2006 and following a
Forestry Stewardship Council® audit by an independent
company of purchases and processes during 2012,
we are pleased to have received certification under
certificate No CUCOC 807095 to confirm our continued
commitment to purchasing and supplying timber from
responsibly managed sources.
PLANED POSTS
We are proud to support The FSC® in promoting
responsible management of the world’s forests. It was
founded in 1993 in response to public concern about
deforestation and demand for a trustworthy woodlabelling scheme. There are national working groups in
more than 50 countries.
We have introduced a range of planed timber into our treated
range. These posts and boards are designed to match our quality
planed panels and give the opportunity to enhance any solid
boundary. See page 19
ANY SIZES CAN BE PLANED - Most of our posts, rails and boards
can be planed or we can cut, plane and treat to almost any
specification. Simply ask for a quotation, supplied manufactured to
size it could well save you time and money on site.
FSC UK is a registered charity.
Benefits of buying from FSC certified suppliers include:FSC certified forests are managed with consideration
for people, wildlife and the environment. The FSC label
guarantees that the trees that are harvested are replaced
or allowed to regenerate naturally. Parts of the forest
are protected entirely, in order to protect rare animals
and plants. All the wood is tracked from the forest to
the store, with a chain of custody. Every link between
the forest and the consumer is certified to make it clearly
identifiable which wood is FSC certified and which is not.
EDGED EASED
Many of the popular sizes of post, rail and boards can be produced
with edges eased to give consistent smooth rounded edges to
remove the square edge that can be sharp to the touch, particularly
to smaller hands. Ideal for use in highly trafficked areas - makes the
product perfect for use in schools and public spaces.

…That is why we changed to Wolmanit® CX
Fountain timber has always tried to use the best chemicals, the best materials and the best treatment
practices available in the industry… …That is why during all the changes in chemicals and material usage
over the years, Fountain Timber has always been able to stand by their treatment.
Fountain Timber has always been an environmentally-minded
organisation. We care about timber and take great pride in
producing high quality products while minimising the impact
production has on the environment. We operate to ISO 14001, a
certified and strict Environmental Management Standard
High-quality treatment and state of the art quality control is the most
promising way to increase the trust in treated timber. Wolmanit®
CX from BASF offered a package of product and service that was
backed by some of the most compelling research data and findings.
This justifies the increased investment in liquid timber protection to
protect from all forms of biological decay.
We simply expect all ground contact treated material (use class 4)
supplied by us to give at least a 10 year service life. If for whatever
reason our product fails (excluding our standard usage conditions
shown on page 62) we will replace the product FREE OF CHARGE
upon proof of purchase. We want to continue with that that pledge

Wolman® CX in use
When reviewing our pressure treatment system, we sought a highly
effective preservative protection method with minimal environmental
impact that offers quality and longevity to the materials we offer.
These are key drivers to customer satisfaction and confidence.
Fencing posts and stakes are in ground contact exposed to severe
wetting and attack of fungi, so need a protection suitable for
Use Class 4, which means ideally a full sap-wood penetration is
required. High-quality wood preservatives are complex chemical
formulations of different active ingredients, co-biocides and
additives in order to achieve the highest performance. The most
crucial performance properties are a high efficacy against wood
destroying fungi and insects
Additionally, the penetration properties of the preservative are the
key to achieve a high quality treatment. Particularly as different
timber species have different penetration properties. Some wood
species like spruce or douglas fir are very difficult to penetrate,
while others like pine are much easier to penetrate.
That is why we have changed.
Additionally, BASF Wolmanit® CX is stable over a long storage
period under different temperature conditions and give an
homogeneous distribution of the active ingredients in the
treatment solution and finally in the timber. This reduces the
variation caused by the use of less stable preservative liquids.
MORE ABOUT HOW AND WHY WE USE
BASF WOLMAN® CX
High-quality treated timber must fulfill two basic criteria for
a long service life: The required loading and an adequate
penetration of the timber with the best liquid wood
preservative available.
The eco-toxicological and toxicologial foot-print are positive to
position timber treated with BASF Wolmanit® CX as a sustainable
& eco-friendly building material.
Both, the preservative’s required retention level and the
required penetration depth depend on the final application
of the treated timber, the wood species and the wood
preservative. Depending on the application of the timber expressed in use classes - the exposure to fungi and insects
differs. It is pretty simple: The higher the use class the higher
the required protection of the timber.

Traditional Feather Edge Fencing
Feather Edge fencing is a popular alternative to fence panels and will often result
in a stronger and sturdier fence.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BUILD A FENCE?
Building your own fence isn’t that difficult providing you use the
correct materials – listed below are the items you would need:

against the weather but also add that finishing touch

fibre adds protection. We recomment you take advice - the depth
of bark required will depend on equipment height and use (BS/EN
1176 and 1177 give full loose fill regulations). Bark strips are also

Each shed is hand crafted on site in our specially created
workshop – manufactured using tanalised timber which has
excellent colour durability helping our products looking better
for longer - The pressure treatment initially gives the timber a
pale green colouration, the appearance will then mellow to a
warm honey brown, and without further treatment or stain will
eventually transform to silver grey which blends perfectly with
the environment.

Our Services
We buy in specially selected logs from forests from the UK,
mainly from the South West.
to ensure the moisture content is 28% to achieve the best
possible preservative treatment.
The material delivered in bulk then makes its way through our
sawmill on site. Our skilled sawyers cut the timber to get the
most from it which could include:
When ready for treatment, we use Wolmanit CX to treat to the
correct standard.
•Sleepers
• Structural timber
• Sawn timber in
varying sizes and
lengths
•Posts
• Featheredge boards
• UC3 for above ground (Rails,
Feather edge boards etc).
Both allow us to offer a 10+ year service life on material
supplied and treated to Fountain Timber high standards.
Smaller logs are either peeled (to give a rustic finish) or
machined rounded to produce:

• UC4 for ground contact (Posts,
Gravel Boards etc).
From the finished material our local craftsmen produce
everything from
•Bollards
•Stakes
•Rails
The peelings from the logs are either used to produce
specialist Bark strips for play areas or the finer material for
gardens with the remainder composted to produce woodland
mulch and composts. Offcuts from the sawmills are stored
as slabwood and allowed to dry before chipping to produce
woodchip for both commercial and domestic boilers.

The products manufactured and supplied by us are displayed
attractively in our large display areas in the heart of the wood.

After production in the sawmills, the timber is moved to our
drying sheds during the winter months for at least two weeks
to air dry before being placed in our kilns for around a week
Our services don’t end there… A specialist delivery fleet is
available to deliver large or bulky orders to your home or site.
Delivery & Transport
For heavy, bulky or awkwardly shaped materials, a reliable
delivery service is paramount for many of our customers.
We operate a range of vehicles that meet differing access
issues for rural, city or town areas, and different product
requirements. Fence panels require different handling to
loose bark or composts.
Our delivery charges are designed to be economically
priced and easy to understand by zoning by postcode
and by offering delivery discounts for larger quantities,
the majority of our customers will not see an increase
in delivery charges - for many the costs will actually
been reduced.

Country Style Gates
Single Gate – Hanging and Closing on the back of your posts.
A. Measure the distance between the inside faces of your
posts. Your gate size will then be distance between posts,
plus 76mm. So for example if your gap is 2924mm, plus
76mm you will need a 3000mm gate (3m). Your gate will
open one way 180°.
Single Gate – Hanging and closing between your posts.
HANGING
The most popular way to hang a drive way gate is to place
the hinges on the back face of your post, allowing a full width
between the posts. For this you will need:

posts, then minus 205mm from this measurement, this
assumes you will be using a spring fastener with central
closing catch. (Codes 80088 and 84592). Your gate will
open in or out 110°.

C. Measure the distance between the inside faces of your
posts, then add 66mm to that gap measurement. (This
allows for a 10mm central closing gap). For example,
if you gap is 3000mm, plus 66mm equal 3066mm,
divided by two equals 1533mm for each gate. With this
arrangement gates will open one way 110°.

A 30mm gap is needed for hinges and spacing between the
gates, 10mm each end and 10mm in the centre, this allows
for expanding and contracting with the different seasons.
D. Measure the distance between the inside faces of your
posts. Then minus 240mm from this and then divide by
two for the size of each gate. For example, if the distance
between posts was 3000mm, minus 240mm hinge and
catch allowance equals 2760mm. This then divided by two
equals 1380mm for each gate. With this arrangement, you
gates will open in or out 110°.
POSTS
Hinge sizes
Gates up to and including 1.8m = 460mm (18”)
Field Gate Hinge set (code 80080).
Gates over 1.8m = 600mm (24”)
Field Gate Hinge set (code 85503).
We would recommend your post to be 900mm higher than
your gate, this is to allow 600mm into the ground and
300mm above the gate. For example a 1.8 high gate would
require a 2.7m post. Posts can be found on page 18.

WHEN YOU BUY TIMBER FOR DIRECT SOIL
CONTACT…
FREE REPLACEMENT UNDERTAKING
Fountain Timber treatment to Use Class 4 standard is for use in
ground contact. ALL UC4 products are supplied with a service
life of exceeding 10 years protected against any failure caused
by rot or insect attack.
MAKE SURE IT IS TREATED TO USE CLASS 4
Steps taken by us for treating ground contact timber
to uC4
Any UC4 product supplied by Fountain Timber which fails
due to either fungal decay or insect attack, during this 10
year period will be replaced FREE OF CHARGE subject to the
following conditions:-
1) Timber is dried to 28% moisture content or below in our
own drying kiln (With the exception of Spruce that more
readily accepts treatment at over 30% moisture)
• The timber must be used for the supplied purpose and
not placed in any abnormal conditions not highlighted
to Fountain Timber Products at the time of purchase or
alternatively removed from their original position and reused in differing conditions
2) Treat timber in like for like batches. (ie Pine with Pine,
Douglas Fir with Douglas Fir, Larch with Larch and Spruce
with Spruce)
3) Monitor, measure and record all treatment cycles to
ensure we outperform the manufacturers high treatment
standards
• If the product is cut, notched or drilled it is essential the
cut ends be liberally treated with Ensele® end wood
grain preservative. Fence post should not be pointed after
treatment
4) Allow to dry and deliver when ready.
With all these steps we can be confident in offering
our customers a 10+ year service life protection
against rot or insect attack
• The shortening of fence posts should be avoided wherever
possible. Under no circumstances should a cut end be
placed in the ground.
The only things that will void this protection…
• If setting posts in concrete, suitable drainage/run off must
be applied, allowing water to flow freely away from post.
• Cutting (unless cut ends are liberally treated with a good
wood preservative. ie. Wolman CnT or Ensele®)
• Proof of purchase must be supplied with any claim; this
can be by way of receipt, invoice number or delivery note
number for the products in question.
• Notching (unless notches are liberally treated with a good
wood preservative. ie. Wolman CnT or Ensele®)
• We will require the return of samples (WHOLE POST) for
any failed product to identify the cause of failure and to
test the quality and penetration of the treatment
• Damaging (ie excessive damage or splitting of pointed
stake during installation)
• This undertaking will cover the cost or replacement of the
product as supplied by Fountain Timber Products. Any
other costs incurred in replacing the products are excluded.
• Equalising/Planing (without returning for re-treatment)
The shortening of posts or stakes should be avoided
wherever possible. the cut end SHOULD NEVER be
placed in the ground
