Authors Jan Van Mourik Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk Adrie van der Werf GEO Sustainability Associate, Accredited Verifier Driving the Green ™ Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk GEO CertifiedTM Report 2010 Facility Details Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk is a golf facility comprising: Courses • Bullewijkbaan (9 holes) • Abcoudebaan (9 holes) • Holendrechtbaan (9 holes) Clubhouses • De Houten Vier Other • Pro Shop • Facilities Nature The golf course is located at the south-east of Amsterdam with a highway at the west, a recreational area, named De Hoge Dijk to the west and a lake called the Abcoudermeer at the south. Because of the intensity of infrastructural facilities a limited amount of species settles on the golf course. We distinguish the following ecotopes: woods and thickets (7 ha.) Grassland and scrub (41 ha.) And open water (7.4 ha.). The course is situated on a north-south migratory route for birds. This results in an observation of 100 bird- including 20 Red List species. The variety of environmental transitions implies that a total of about 200 species of vascular plants have been observed, with only a few Red List species. Among the observed butterflies and dragonflies are no rare species. Designations Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk does not feature any designated or protected areas. 2 Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk GEO CertifiedTM Report 2010 Surveys The following ecological surveys have been undertaken: Title Author Date Botanical NLadviseurs 2009-07-20 Birds De Hoge Dijk 2010-04-24 Mammals De Hoge Dijk 2009-07-01 Habitats Estimated area of habitats at Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk: • Rough ‘ecological’ grassland: 5 ha; of Local Importance • Scrub and shrub vegetation: 1 ha; of Local Importance • Open water features: 7 ha; of Local Importance Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk has undertaken the following activities to improve the landscape ecology of the site: • Increase the size of habitat patches • Connect internal habitat patches • Connect patches with external habitats • Create new habitat corridors • Introduce a policy to avoid habitat fragmentation • Improve and diversify habitat edges Species Rare, protected and notable species occurring at Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk [Latin names]: • Crepis paludosa, moerasstreepzaad • Anthemis arvensis, valse kamille • Alauda arvensis ssp. arvensis, Veldleeuwerik • Anas clypeata, Slobeend • Anas crecca ssp. crecca, Wintertaling • Anthus pratensis ssp. pratensis, Graspieper • Bucephala clangula ssp. clangula, Brilduiker • Carduelis cannabina ssp. cannabina, Kneu • Cuculus canorus ssp. canorus, Koekoek 3 Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk GEO CertifiedTM Report 2010 • Egretta garzetta ssp. garzetta, Kleine Zilverreiger • Gallinago gallinago ssp. gallinago, Watersnip • Hippolais icterina, Spotvogel • Hirundo rustica ssp. rustica, Boerenzwaluw • Limosa limosa ssp. limosa, Grutto • Locustella luscinioides ssp. luscinioides, Snor • Luscinia megarhynchos ssp. megarhynchos, Nachtegaal • Motacilla flava ssp. flava, Gele Kwikstaart • Oenanthe oenanthe ssp. oenanthe, Tapuit • Passer domesticus ssp. domesticus, Huismus • Passer montanus ssp. montanus, Ringmus • Philomachus pugnax, Kemphaan • Picus viridis ssp. viridis, Groene Specht • Sterna hirundo ssp. hirundo , Visdief • Tringa hypoleucos, Oeverloper • Tringa totanus ssp. totanus, Tureluur • Turdus pilaris, Kramsvogel Consultation Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk consults with the following nature conservation organisations: • NLadviseurs • Natuurvereniging De Ruige Hof 4 Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk GEO CertifiedTM Report 2010 Activities Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk has undertaken the following activities to enhance nature protection: Activity Description Well planned maintenance Detailed mowing plan for water banks Increasing biodiversity Removal of clippings on several places in the rough Providing a continuous habitat to increase the biodiversity Phased cutting of pollard willows Phased mowing regiem to improve wildflowers and wildlife Keeping dead trees standing Phased cutting regiem shrubs Providing nesting places for birds Nestboxes and nesting places for storks Aims & Objectives Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk has the following key objectives for maximizing its ecological value: • Increasing the biodiversity • Structured maintenance by well planned management • Combining high esthetic value with ecological value Landscape & Heritage The polders surrounding the golf course are called the Holendrechter- en Bullewijkerpolder. This reclamation dates back to 1869. The original fenland is developed in the last ice age. Reclamation of the fens in the past 1000 years have changed the landscape significantly. Removal of the top layer of peat has lowered the ground level of the polder meters below sealevel. A construction of a dike around the polder has finally given the opportunity to pump the polder dry in 1860. After drying the polder, it has been in use as farmland. The dike is still existing, located between the parking lot and the clubhouse, but also between the Holendrechter and the Abcoude course. It is an important cultural and historical element. Another important factor are the relatively high leveled "bovenlanden". This section is located at the Abcoude course. At these bovenlanden the peat isn't chipped to keep a strong buffer between the lake and the polder to prevent levee failure. Designations Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk does not feature any landscape designations. Landschappelijk karakter behouden door openheid te bewaren. Keeping historical feature in good condition The dike that runs along the golf course remains unaffected. Aims & Objectives Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk has the following key objectives for conserving or enhancing its landscape and cultural heritage value: • Preserving landscape character Water On the golf course is surface water from the Holendrecht used for watering the track. The water level of the Holendrecht is a few meters above the ground level of the golf course. Own surface water is because of the slightly brackish composition less suitable for these purposes. The groundwater in the polders is between 20 and 50 cm. below ground level. There is no direct use of groundwater as a source. 7 Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk GEO CertifiedTM Report 2010 Consumption Water sources Primary Source Secondary Source (if used) Clubhouse Public / Potable N/A Golf Courses Surface N/A Accommodation N/A N/A Maintenance facility Public / Potable Surface Other N/A N/A Water consumption (m3) 2008 2009 Clubhouse 2182 4749 Golf Courses N/A N/A Accommodation N/A N/A Maintenance facility N/A N/A Other N/A N/A 8 Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk GEO CertifiedTM Report 2010 Irrigation The following areas are irrigated: Area name Approx. By soil composition and a high groundwater level a high aeration and treatment of the course is of importance. For the grass species composition reflects the most favorable species due to soil composition, nevertheless there is to much Poa annua. The percentage of Poa annua is reduced by means of additional operations, like vertical mowing, vertidraining, seeding etc. 10 Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk GEO CertifiedTM Report 2010 Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk maintains the following turfgrass species: Greens • Creeping bent (Agrostis stolonifera) • Fescue (Festuca rubra) Surrounds & Approaches • Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) • Fescue (Festuca rubra) Tees • Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) • Fescue (Festuca rubra) Fairways • Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) Semi-rough • Annual meadow-grass (Poa annua) Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk regularly undertakes the following practices to improve turf health: • Hollow Coring - 2 times per year • Top Dressing - 7 times per year • Micro Tining - 4 times per year • Verticutting - 7 times per year Nutrition The greens tees and fairways are annually provided with the necessary amount of fertilizer and if necessary pesticides. Aims & Objectives Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk has the following key objectives for achieving high quality playing surfaces in an environmentally responsible manner: • A management program that is developed on sound cultural practices will be the most environmently friendly way to maintain quality turf. 13 Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk GEO CertifiedTM Report 2010 Waste The proportion of waste that is collected separately has grown in recent years. The separate disposal of the waste gives the opportunity to recycle as much as possible. Chemicals are treated with great care. We think in particular of waste released during maintenance: oil, paint (waste), pesticides etc. The contractor which is responsible for the maintenance is certified with the ISO 14001 standard. This certificate is especially focussed on handling and storage of hazardous substances. Despite the high playing intensity, the course consist of many small ecosystems with a relatively high species-richness. The management and the green committee regularly meet and discuss nature and environment issues. All actions to be taken are described in their Nature and Environment Management Plan. Adrie van der Werf, GEO Accredited Verifier Observations Nature Golf course “De Hoge Dijk” is located in the peat meadow area (veenweidegebied) in the province of Noord-Holland. This landscape is characterized by a peaty subsoil, interconnected waterways and an open landscape. Due to the man-made character the golf course consists of different soil types with varying soil moisture content. This resulted in an extremely diverse flora with more than 200 species. As the course is situated in a heavily populated area, only small mammals are encountered. On the other hand, as the course lies in the north-south bird migratory route, over more than 100 bird species were observed over the years, several of them which are on the Red List. The last years more attention is paid to restoration of typical ecosystems. This looks promising for the future, even though I must say that the management could be slightly braver with respect to their mowing regime. At the time of inspection, the areas between the fairways were heavily mown. Water Approx. 14 ha of the total area is irrigated. As the course is situated in an area with a controlled groundwater level of 0 to -50 cm below the surface area, water requirements are not that high. Despite this low requirement actions are undertaken to minimize irrigation intensity. To protect the surface water on the golf course, surface run-off of nutrients is partly prevented by bufferzones (acting as filters) around the surface waters, furthermore the use of no spray zones was introduced. Energy Energy consumption is registered for the all the accommodations. The club has the intention to further reduce energy consumption by energy saving bulbs and e.g. consulting energy experts. During the audit the possibilities on the use of renewable energy sources were discussed. For several machines bio-fuels are now used. There is a general trend in the Netherlands to reduce the rate of fertilizer application. This also holds for golf course De Hoge Dijk. Despite this reduction there still is a relatively high percentage of Poa annua in their greens. During the audit possibilities were discussed to reduce the percentage of Poa by 22 Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk GEO CertifiedTM Report 2010 implementing a more restrictive fertilizer and water regime. Actions for the future are described in their environmental management program. Education & Awareness The committee, greenkeeping staff and management that address the nature and environmental issues are enthousiastic and are partly professionals. Products & Supply Chains At the time of the audit no specific “fair trade products” were used in the clubhouse, nor specific attention is given to local products. Environmental Quality The club has a clear vision on environmentally friendly management. They advocate a reduction in fertilizer, energy and water use (e.g. using compressed air for cleaning machines instead of water). All activities are described in their Nature and Environment Management Plan in which current practices are described and goals to be achieved in the future. Pesticide use is reduced to a minimum and according to legislation. People & Communities Members are informed on nature and environmental issues via website and club journal. All information on nature issues is registered in the Ecological Management System. At the time of the audit however, the EMS was not accessible for outsiders. It is recommended to publish all data on environmental and nature issues on the club’s website. Documentation Reviewed • Environmental policy • Environmental management plan • Certification report • External surveys and reports • Environmental data • Awareness raising materials Conclusions Golf course De Hoge Dijk has proven that, despite the very intensively played course, they are able and capable to maintain their course in an environmentally friendly way. The goals addressed in their Nature and Environment Management Plan allow a further validation of the actions taken. 23 Golfbaan De Hoge Dijk GEO CertifiedTM Report 2010 Recommendation I Adrie van der Werf, Golf Environment Organization Accredited Verifier, recommend that be awarded GEO Certified status for excellence in environmental management.
