Heroic Musical Pages
Beethoven’s incidental music for Goethe’s play Egmont overture and incidental
music, op. 84, is perhaps his most dramatic and greatest stage work. This
is a story of heroism: Count Egmont leads the Flemish resistance against
the Spanish rule during the 16th c., he is arrested and sentenced to death.
The main ideals such as striving for national liberation, revolution against
oppression and the sacrificial death of the hero are perfectly expressed, both
though the music and text, and can be paralleled to the struggle of Cypriot
people for their own independence.

presented by Sir Simon Rattle, the foremost British conductor of our day.

revolution whose reverberations have continued to this day.
AFTER THE WAKE considers the musical legacy of the two men who
had dominated the first part of the 20th century – Schoenberg and R. Strauss

In Memoriam
The Liturgy for Strings is Armenian music at its most intensely beautiful
and poignant, embodying traditional liturgical melodies transmitted, and
sanctified through devotion, over centuries. These melodies were edited and
polyphonically arranged by Archimandrite Komitas (1869-1935) on the eve of
the Armenian Genocide and masterfully arranged in the late sixties as a concert
suite by Zareh Sahakiants. The Genocide itself served as a precursor to the
Holocaust; the elegiac contrapuntal elegy, marked In Memoriam, for 23 solo
strings by Komitas’ contemporary Richard Strauss (1864-1949), mourns the
destruction wrought by World War II.

Ludwig Van Beethoven
Péter Somodari │Violoncello
Nicolas Costantinou │Piano
The composition of sonatas for piano and cello was unthinkable before
Beethoven; this particular combination posed various difficulties as the piano
would often outweigh the low notes of the cello and balance between the two
instruments is always precarious. Beethoven was the first composer to tackle
these challenges. The works for piano and cello (three sets variations and
five sonatas) are representative of the three periods of Beethoven’s artistic
creation: the ‘classical’ (WoO 45, 46, opp. 5, 66), the ‘heroic’ (op. 69) and the
‘late’ (op. 102).

A journey to the Mediterranean islands.
From the Maps Collection of the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation. Cyprus,
situated at the cross of the sea routes in the Eastern Mediterranean, comprised
the link between the ports of the Middle East with important Western trade ports
like Venice and Genoa, and later Marseilles and northwest Europe. In the 13th
and 14th centuries, a specific group of maps, the portolan charts, appeared.
These included sailing directions between various ports and for voyages
towards the numerous islands of the Mediterranean and its adjacent seas.
The cartographic recording of ports, shores and nautical routes was based
on practical observation. Since antiquity, cartographers paid special attention
to the cartography of Cyprus, which began to develop during the 15th century
and reached what is considered to be the golden age of Cypriot cartography
in the 16th century.

Antigone
Choreographer Machi Dimitriadou Lindahl, four performers and two musicians
tell the story of Sophocles’ heroine, Antigone, narrated through the language of

Two distant worlds
The Qin and Han Dynasties (221 BC – AD 220), with a life span of over four
centuries, were important periods of Chinese history and have played a vital
role in the evolution and shaping of the traditional Chinese culture. Cyprus has
lost its strategic significance under the domination of the Roman Empire (58
BC – AD 395), as it was under the status of pax romana. In this exhibition,
ancient objects from both civilizations are displayed one next to the other in
an original as well as daring effort to bring together, under the same roof, Two
Distant Worlds.

and are operated by trained riders who know first-aid. They are also suitable for
people with disabilities.

and Culture Tour (workshops and galleries of Larnaka), and a Historical Tour
around the Town (museums, churches and ancient monuments).

Conductor: Haig Utidjian.
