INTRODUCING:
Madeena Sultana
PhD Candidate, Department of Computer Science
Originally from Bangladesh, Madeena obtained her Master’s and Bachelor degrees
in Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) at Jahanginnagan University. Her initial
interest was physics, but during her first year studies and participating in
competitive programming contests, she discovered her true passion in life—
problem solving.
Current Research Interests
Madeen is currently working under the supervision of Marina Gavrilova, and cosupervisor, Svetlana Yanushkevich. Her PhD research includes human social
interaction analysis for Biometric Security, with other interests in digital image
processing, pattern recognition, fuzzy logic, and GPU computing.
Madeena has been awarded several scholarships: The Eyes High International
Doctoral Scholarship (2013), the AITF Scholarship (2014-2016), and most recently
the prestigious NSERC Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (2014-2017).
With over 20 publications in refereed journals and conferences, in addition to coauthoring a book: Efficient Trademark Retrieval using Weighted Image Features:
A GPU Based Approach (published by VDM Verlag, Germany), Madeena is well on
her way to establishing herself as a true professional in the field.
Thoughts on Canada:
Madeena first arrived in Canada in
August 2012, where she visited with
her brother in Toronto for two weeks.
She found Canadians to be very nice,
warm, and helpful—and very tolerant
of the cultural diversity in this country.
When accepted at the University of
Calgary, she was initially upset because
she would be so far away from her brother in Toronto. But after her first trip to
Banff and seeing the Rocky Mountains, she was happy to have found herself here
in Alberta—with such a huge backyard to enjoy and explore.

Other Interests:
Madeena and her husband, Mamun (a Network Analyst at Shaw Business), are avid
hikers and have explored many locales in Alberta including the Johnston Canyon,
Grotto Canyon, Yamnuska hiking trail in Kananaskis Country, and Jasper.
In addition, they have travelled to many places throughout Bangladesh, India,
Canada and the USA—with plans to do a Euro-tour next year.
Another hobby Madeena enjoys is the Japanese paper art called origami. You can
