Care Essentials for family and friends will begin October 7 and is a four week series held in the evening from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm to provide guidance throughout the caregiver journey and strategies for when a person with dementia’s care needs have increased. Topics will include: Progression of dementia The caregiver journey Day to day care Understanding behavior All of these learning opportunities will be available at the Maryfield Health Centre and are provided at no cost to participants. Contact the Health Centre for more information or to register. We are greatly disappointed that someone has vandalized some of the walking path sign decals in the community playground. These were installed there as part of the Children’s Jaunt Walking path which includes a scavenger game to find the hidden animals on the signs. These signs were sponsored by donations from our community and installed by volunteers. The entire project was to improve health and enhance life in this community. It will cost money to have them replaced. Hopefully when they are replaced they will be respected and left undamaged for everyone in the community to enjoy. They were clothed in rags. The landowners were consolidating the miniscule acreage; now the people had no place to live let alone earn anything. Men, women and children, 300,000 or more, left with almost nothing and arrived in Canada in rags and barefoot. The present exodus in the middle east is a similar tragedy, fewer years, better clothing and some money. Conditions in their country were and are horrendous. BOOK REVIEW: If you have read a book that you particularly like, please write a review and bring it to the library or email it to [email protected] or just let us know the title and the subject matter. We will be happy to include it in the library news. Hoopladigital.com: Download music, movies, television programs, audio books on your computer or mobile device at this site! There are thousands of titles available to borrow 24/7. All you need is a free library card from the Maryfield Public Library. CHECK IT OUT! YARN BOMBING: Come & gone! Did you see how decorative the town looked? Did you think about normal objects you have quit noticing because they are always there? Hope you enjoyed it while it lasted! October 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, & November 5. Maryfield United Church SENIORS’ WEEK: Sept. 28 - Oct. 4 BOOK CLUB: The book club began in September. You can join any time. We will be reading our second book in October. Books are chosen by the group from a long list of possibilities. After reading we discuss each book. Did you like it, dislike it, find it humorous - many questions to consider. It’s fun to get together and see what each of us thinks. MARYFIELD LIBRARY STORY HOUR: Continues on the first Friday of every month at 10:30 a.m. in the Playschool Room. Parents are encouraged to come too. Activities include a story, a craft and a snack. For further information, contact Ana Gray at 306-646-4595. “FLIGHT FROM FAMINE” by Donald MacKay: The reason I requested this book was that a set of my grandparents came from Northern Ireland in 1820 and a set of my husband’s grandparents came from Ireland in 1850. The famine’s beginning was shortly after 1815 until after the Great Famine of 1845-50. Between 800,000 and a million people died in those years from starvation - loss of potato crops from blight - and diseases resulting from poor sanitation. The Irish were starving in the land of their birth. The people were selling their clothing so they could buy Wondering what to do with last year’s Hallowe’en Costumes? Maryfield Public Library is running a costume exchange! Just drop your old costumes off at the library any Tuesday or Wednesday during early October. Drop-in any Tuesday or Wednesday to check out the costumes that are available for exchange. An inventory of available costumes will be posted online as they are turned in. First come, first serve! Questions? Call the library, 306-646-2148, or better yet, stop in and talk to Jan or Charlotte. FLU SEASON IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER The flu shot is the best way to avoid getting influenza because it stimulates the body to produce antibodies against the influenza virus. Both influenza and the common cold are viral respiratory infections (they affect the nose, throat, and lungs). Viruses are spread from person to person through airborne droplets that are sneezed out or coughed up by an infected person. In some cases, the viruses can be spread when a person touches an infected surface (e.g., doorknobs, countertops, telephones) and then touches his or her nose, mouth, or eyes. People infected with an influenza or cold virus become contagious 24 hours after the virus enters the body (often before symptoms appear). Adults remain infectious (can spread the virus to others) for about 6 days, and children remain infectious for up to 10 days. Knowing how viruses spread, it is understandable that the best way to prevent catching or spreading the flu or a cold is good hygiene: Wash your hands frequently. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Use a tissue if you are sneezing or coughing, and then discard the used tissue immediately. Clean hard surfaces with a disinfectant. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Stay at home if you are sick with a cold or flu. You need to get enough rest to recover from illness; fatigue can actually increase the duration of symptoms. Staying at home will also avoid spreading the infection to others. To help speed your recovery, drink lots of fluids and avoid physical exertion. Thanks to the staff, parents and students from Bellegarde, Maryfield, Redvers and Wawota Schools. The students were attentive, enthusiastic, and participated at every station. Thanks to all the presenters -- you were well prepared, knowledgeable and fun. Our Safety Day would not have been possible without the support of businesses and organizations both local and national. All of the demo props were supplied by CASA (Canadian Agricultural Safety Association). SAASE (Saskatchewan Association of Agricultural Societies and Exhibitions) funded participant lunches and provided a station on electrical safety. A huge thank you to Enbridge Pipeline for their financial and volunteer support. Without the encouragement of Enbridge’s Lorna St. Thomas we would not have had the Safety Day. Local businesses and organizations provided financial support, ‘in kind’ donations and volunteers for the day.
