You will find that the health of the Foundation is strong with total assets residing at just under $50 million. In the most recent fiscal year, more than $500,000 was disbursed in student scholarship awards and $850,000 in support to the college. I have had the privilege of hearing directly from students who have indicated their lives have been transformed by your gifts and I know their success is linked to the support of the foundation’s many donors. President’s Letter and successes include a new Veterans’ Success Center, designation by the Military Order of the Purple Heart as the first-in-Florida Purple Heart College, our first graduating class for the Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education, the largest combined class of Associate in Science and Bachelor of Science Nursing programs in the college’s history, several sold-out Mattie Kelly Arts Center events, and not to be forgotten, our 2015 NJCAA Division I National Championship titles in two sports - Men’s Basketball and Baseball! Ty J. Handy Providing access to an affordable education and opportunities for our students to succeed is at the heart of Northwest Florida State College’s mission of improving lives. We are truly grateful for the community support we receive to make this a reality for so many of our students. For the third consecutive year, NWF State College was included in the Aspen Institute’s College Excellence Program, placing it in the top 10 percent of community colleges in the United States. Additional accolades The Foundation board accomplished many things during the period of this report, the most important of which was implementation of the NWF State College Foundation’s Strategic Plan. This Strategic Plan has established a framework for success which has bolstered the organization. I am grateful to our Foundation directors, who not only served a 16-month term rather than the typical 12-month term, but whose work to advance the mission of the Foundation has been inspiring. We look forward to strengthening our existing relationships while seeking new donors and corporate partners to help meet the college’s ever increasing need for student scholarships, program support, and other college priorities. Thank you for all you do in support of Northwest Florida State College! Chiccarelli is a graduate of Northwest Florida State College and the NWF State College Collegiate High School. Following graduation, Chiccarelli was offered an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy, where she distinguished herself academically, served in numerous leadership positions and was a member of the Varsity Swim Team. While at the academy she volunteered as mentor to middle school girls and was chosen to participate in several cultural and academic programs abroad, traveling to the UK, Asia and France. Currently in her third year of medical school at Tulane University she is enrolled in the Honor’s Program, an elected representative on the Student Honor Board and serves on the school of Medicine Constitutional Reform Committee. 2014-15 NWF State College Foundation Annual Report Against the Odds 6 Dr. David Lambert was recently named Chief Scientist of the Munitions Directorate at Eglin Air Force Base. Dr. Lambert, credits hard work, determination and Northwest Florida State College for putting him on a career path to success. His love of math and science took root at NWF State College. Having grown up in a single-parent household in low income housing he remembers help he received along the way, and pays it forward at every opportunity by taking time to mentor and teach young scientists and engineers who follow in his footsteps. Distinguished Alumus Dr. Sam McCall, a graduate of the charter class of Okaloosa-Walton Community College, holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Accounting from the University of West Florida and Master and Doctoral Degrees in Public Administration and Public Policy from Florida State University. Dr. McCall served the Florida Auditor General from 1969 to 1999 and as Deputy Auditor General from 1986 to 1999. Following his “retirement” he served as the City Auditor for the City of Tallahassee from 1999 to 2013. He is currently enjoying his third career as Florida State University’s Chief Audit Officer. Christopher Bennett Associate in Science in Nursing He’s packed a lot of living in his 26 years – he’s seen a lot, done a lot and experienced a lot for one so young. Chris Bennett was born and raised in Niceville and attended elementary, middle school and high school in his home town. After his high school graduation, he joined the Marine Corps and served in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province as an infantryman before leaving the service and setting his sights on a college education. Chris is a member of NWF State College’s Nursing class with a scheduled graduation date of May 2016. Upon completion of his degree and licensure, he would love to work in an Emergency Room, ICU or with cancer patients. “It’s an honor for me to be with patients in the hard times of their lives, to hear their stories and share in some of their life experiences.” he said. Eventually Bennett would like to continue his education and become a Nurse Practitioner with a goal of one day joining other colleagues to form a practice of their own. A recipient of the Eglin Federal Credit Union/Thomas Braswell Scholarship, Bennett believes being a returning student gave him some advantages. “I had some ‘life’ under me and took my studies very seriously. I came to NWF State College because I wanted an education and had no intention of wasting the opportunity. Receiving the EFCU/Braswell Scholarship has helped me tremendously. Taking away some of the financial worry really makes my class and study time much easier.” Bennett currently carries a 3.2 GPA in the Nursing Program and gives back to the college by serving as a tutor for students needing some assistance in Anatomy and Physiology. When discussing his experiences at NWF State College, Bennett compliments Dr. Ted Barker, Dr. David Schjott, Dr. Jean Mitchell, Dr. Vickie Hunt and Mr. Chris Mizell for their classroom instruction as well as their willingness to spend before and after classroom time explaining concepts, answering questions and serving as mentors. When Chris Bennett receives his nursing pin at the culmination of his studies, he will have achieved yet another goal. He won’t be given his pin; he will have earned it! 7 Foundation Financials Statement of Activities Sources of Support $2,929,347 • FY 2014-15 for the Fiscal Year Ended June 30, 2015* Revenues Gifts/Contributions $ 926,905 Grants 153,410 Memberships 56,180 Special Events 12,205 Investment Income 1,745,982 Other Revenue 34,665 Total Revenues $ 2,929,347 Expenditures Support to College $ 1,089,642 Scholarships 440,540 Professional Fees/Support Services 315,546 Other Expense 546,032 Total Expenditures $ 2,391,760 $ Net Increase to Fund Balance Other Operating Revenues $538,085 15% Other Non-Operating Revenues $4,500 .2% Investment Income $1,238,061 42.3% Gifts/ Contributions and Grants $1,148,699 39.2% 537,587 Statement of Financial Position 2014-15 NWF State College Foundation Annual Report for the Fiscal Year Ended June 30, 2015* 8 Assets Cash and Cash Equivalents $ 787,827 Investments 41,983,087 Prepaid Expenses 31,817 Depreciable Capital Assets (Net) 4,708,289 Land 401,175 Total Assets $ 47,912,196 Liabilities Accounts Payable $ 157,115 Total Liabilities $ 157,115 Fund Balances Permanently Restricted $ 44,911,269 Temporarily Restricted 1,311,432 Unrestricted 1,532,380 Total Fund Balance $ 47,755,081 $ 47,912,196 Total Liabilities and Fund Balance Uses of Support $2,391,760 • FY 2014-15 Investment Fees/ Other Expenses $298,644 • 12.5% Raider Athletics $88,338 • 3.7% Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance $53,487 • 2.2% Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra $215,315 • 9.0% Scholarships $436,953 18.3% Mattie M. Hayley’s prize is an Associate in Science in Nursing degree from Northwest Florida State College. The 2014 graduate of Fort Walton Beach High School is a recipient of the Air Force Association/Jim Shambo Scholarship and she admits being accepted into the highly competitive nursing class was a crowning achievement for her. One of the most challenging obstacles she has faced is living life with a portion of her heart missing. “I have had three open-heart surgeries and grew up knowing my physical limitations. I couldn’t do a lot of exercise or participate in sports like other kids, so I knew I would have to concentrate on other extra-curricular activities,” she said. One of those “other extra-curricular activities” has been serving as a Raider Rep Student Ambassador. Her duties as a Raider Rep include giving tours to students and parents considering NWF State College as a college destination. As a student, Hayley especially enjoyed biology classes with Dr. Patrick McArthur. “Dr. McArthur’s teaching style is very engaging. It’s evident he’s passionate about his subject, and students can’t help but feel the same way. He helped me so much as I was preparing to take the HESI nursing entrance exam. He encouraged me and told me to have confidence in my abilities and my knowledge,” she said. The abilities and knowledge she talks about are essential as she begins NWF State College’s nursing program. Knowing it will be difficult isn’t a deterrent. She’s lived with difficulties and knows what it takes to surmount them, so her goal of an Associate in Science in Nursing degree and a career as a pediatric nurse are well within her reach.
