I hope your “year” continues to go well. It is an awesome task to which each of us commits, in the hope that young students will grow enough to be contributors to a more musical tomorrow. KMTA, as an organization stands ready to support your goals. Congratulations to the many students involved in Fall Auditions. Hats-off to the winners in each category! To you the teachers, thank you for encouraging the students to achieve in such a significant way. Our district organizers, as well as David Tauscher and those who assist at the State Auditions, your work is so appreciated. And, we should also be thankful for our long-time sponsor, Capital Federal, for their ongoing support of this important offering of KMTA! Now as students’ focus turns, maybe toward your local association events, or even Music Progressions, you and your colleagues at the local and state levels will be supplying a network of assistance to help make this happen – for the benefit of your students and many others! Working now in the role as President, I have become increasingly aware of how this organization relies on such levels of support and connection. We can draw from the principle of Gestalt theory. Simply that “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” In essence, we accomplish more together than what we would on our own. In this way, we need the connections with each other, as colleagues in our piano teaching world; and we (plus our students) benefit from the support of each other. As your local association events come around, as groups may host combined recitals, community events, as you may be involved in hosting a site for Music Progressions, please look for ways to enhance the support and connections that you are a part of being in KMTA. I hope that we can involve more people, helping members find ways to connect, whether at your own association level or, for some, to participate on the State Board. I’m encouraging that we have active conversations among the board members to help fill positions that are or will become vacant. Advisory positions do provide so much assistance for the state programs! Maybe you would have someone to recommend, or perhaps, a change to a state board position would be a welcome one to you personally. Thank you for the opportunity to serve and assist in this way. I look forward to represent Kansas at the MTNA Conference in San Antonio, coming up in April. And it will be great to connect with the number of KMTA members that attend. Lastly – save the date!! Our conference will be in the fall this year. September 23-24!! Dr. Shiao LiDing is readily squaring an excellent conference for us! Best wishes! Daniel J. Masterson, DMA 2 KMTA Mission Statement Kansas Music Teachers Association is dedicated to helping each student experience the joy of music. Honor a special person and make your own impact on music study by mailing in the form below. The person honored will be entered in our Book of Remembrance for display at State Conferences. Eight local associations applied for grants for 2015-2016, to use the KMTA's allotted amount of $3000. The first to apply and the first project of the season was South Central KMTA who received $250 for their “Marshmallows and Music” project held 10-24-15. They combine a hayrack ride with an outdoor recital, then roast marshmallows. 43 students with 7 teachers enjoyed the gorgeous fall afternoon & evening. The next event on December 12th was McPherson Area PTL's Annual Multi-Piano concert with the addition of student guitarist ensembles joining in with the piano duets. $525 from KMTA allowed 76 students and 12 teachers to enjoy making Christmas music together, and learning about ensemble playing. January 10th, 2016 brought together 325 students and 200 teachers with the Kansas City Multi-Piano Concert. KMTA gr anted them $425 to br ing this event back after a year hiatus. The last Saturday in January brought together over 100 students and 8 teachers for the 49th annual Northwest Kansas PTA' s Clinic and Multi-Keyboard in Colby. A $450 grant from KMTA allowed them to pay mileage for 2 Clinicians and 1 Conductor to work with the students from 8:00 to 4:00, and finish the day with a concert for the parents and community. The same day, High Plains PTA in WaKeeney used their $250 grant from KMTA to hold a Clinic and MultiPiano Event. They had a guest artist perform a recital during the day for 2 teachers and 15-20 students. On March 5, Newton MTA held their own Multi-Piano Festival at Tabor College in Hillsboro. With the $300 KMTA grant, 50 students along with 10-12 teachers rehearsed during the day, and a guest conductor, Christopher David Westover, from Bethel College, conducted a 5:00 concert for the community. Manhattan Area MTA is planning a teacher enr ichment with a Master Class by Scott McBr ide-Smith for April 8, 2016. They will invite inactive members and other teachers in hopes of showing them the benefits of KMTA membership and invite them to the KMTA Convention for further enrichment. They were granted $400 by KMTA. The Wichita Metropolitan Teachers' Association will be celebrating their 30th anniversary with a Melody Bober Multi-Keyboard Festival. They were awarded $400 for 25 teachers & 75 students to participate in this concert and hear a commissioned piece by Melody Bober. Leona Dickman, Local Associations Chair 15 16 KMTA Music Progressions 2016 Many hours of work are under way for 2016 Music Progressions. What an exciting time for our students! This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to get encouragement from other teachers and to be tested on what they know in their level. It is such a great experience. If you are not very familiar with Music Progressions, feel free to ask any questions you may have. You could also go to one of the scheduled progressions around the area and observe how it is run and see what all is involved. We have 5 locations this year to choose from. Hope you are able to join the Music Progressions excitement at one of those locations. Sincerely, Karla Conner Music Progressions Chair 316-215-1083 Music Progressions Locations DISTRICT 1 Kansas City Music Teachers Association Dates: April 23-24 Location: Village Music Academy (Kansas City) Dates: April 9-10 Location: South Middle School, Lawrence Deadline for both: March 7 Coordinator: Veronica Nalley Contact Email: [email protected] DISTRICT 6 Wichita Metropolitan Music Teachers Association Dates: April 30-May 1 Location:WSU Duerksen Fine Arts Building (Wichita) Deadline: March 12 Coordinator: Marlene Hallstrom Contact Email: [email protected] DISTRICT 6 South Central Kansas Music Teachers Association Date: April 16 Location: Woodlawn United Methodist Church (Derby) Deadline: March 11 Coordinators: Annetta Smith Contact Email: [email protected] DISTRICT 6 McPherson Music Teachers Association Dates: May 14 Location: Central Christian College (McPherson) Deadline: April 14 Coordinator: Brett Janssen Contact Email: [email protected] DISTRICT 6 Newton Music Teachers Association Date: April 9 Location: Bethel College (Newton) Deadline: March 9 Coordinators: Carol Klingenberg, Karla Conner Contact Email: [email protected] 17 18 19 KMTA Audition Results November 7-8, 2015 Proudly Sponsored by For a complete listing of Audition Results, visit http://www.ksmta.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/results2015.pdf.
