A la Carte Dining - The Speight`s Ale House
TOWER JUNCTION In 1873, Sir Julius Vogel, the Premier of New Zealand, implemented a “think big” policy in the South Island, building roads, ports and railway lines. The main trunk railway stretched from Christchurch through to Invercargill, and to support this service Railway Workshops were established on this site in May 1880. The Addington Railway Workshops became the biggest employer in the South Island with over one thousand people building, servicing and maintaining the trains and carriages. To accommodate people getting to work, the bicycle stands were three storeys high! In 1883 the Addington water tower was built to provide a pressure water supply for the Addington Railway Workshops. The Tower was an innovative and daring structure, being one of the world’s first structures built in reinforced concrete. The design concept included earthquake loading such that the centre of gravity was very low and even with a tank full of water an earthquake would need to be very severe to capsize it. Today the Addington Water Tower remains in good condition and the concrete is sound. ACTIVITY IN ADDINGTON Addington began to thrive as a centre of activity. In 1887 the Canterbury Agricultural Pastoral Association moved to Addington Showgrounds which became the venue for their annual A&P Show. Canterbury Rugby League shifted to the Addington Showgrounds in 1956. In November 1899 the first race meeting was held at Addington Raceway. Today Addington and the Tower Junction centre remain a central hub of activity within the city of Christchurch. SPEIGHT’S Like tTower Junction, Speight’s has a long history. In 1876 James Speight, Charles Green slade and William Dawson set up Speight’s Brewery in Dunedin. Situated on the same site today in Rattray St, Dunedin, Speight’s is the Pride of the South. THE FOUNDERS In 1876, in the bustling southern city of Dunedin, James Speight’s brewing dream became a reality. With a couple of mates, Charles Greenslade and William Dawson, he purchased an evacuated bottling and malt plant, where all three had worked, and set up his own brewery. The three men made a great team and they wasted no time in getting down to business – in fact, they put through their first brew on April 4th, a month before they received the lease on May 1st and two months before they had even obtained a license on June 6th! By 1887, the combination of clever business sense and great beer had seen Speight’s grow to become the largest brewery in New Zealand. But sadly, with his dream at last a reality, James Speight died in August of that year. GOLD MEDAL ALE In 1879 a cask of Speight’s Strong Ale won the fledgling brewery its first international award at the Sydney International Exhibition. Sales soared and the future of Speight’s was secured. Speight’s Ale continued to go from strength to strength, winning major international awards including several gold medals, hence the naming of “Speight’s Gold Medal Ale” in 1893. SPEIGHT’S CRAFT RANGE Speight’s Brewery Dunedin has brewed award-winning ales since 1876. The four brews in the Speight’s Craft Range – Distinction Ale, Pale Ale, Porter and Pilsener – were originated from recipes of a bygone era in a quest to recreate flavours as true as possible to the original styles. Three of the Craft Range brews, Pale Ale, Porter and Pilsener, are fermented in kauri gyles – open-topped wooden fermentation vats which are lined with beeswax. Small volume and labour intensive, these open, shallow vessels help to bring out the seamless character and full aromas of the brews. Only one other brewery in the world is still known to use kauri gyles. BREWER'S NOTES Speight’s Brewery has always produced award winning, traditional ales and beers, using only the finest quality Southern ingredients and purest water. We take great care and pride in brewing our beers and are proud to present them here to you. Why not taste the whole family of Speight’s beers! Purchase an Ale House Tasting Tray, which will have a sample of each beer for you to try. SPEIGHT’S GOLD MEDAL ALE P R ID E U OF THE SO T H Beer Style Draught Amber Ale First Brewed Alcohol Level 1876 4.0 Colour Bitterness 21 14 Energy (kilojoules/100ml) Calories (/100ml) 135 32 Flavour characteristics: Speight’s is an ale with a hint of “grassy” undertones that add to its complexity. It has the full flavour of Speight’s malt and hops. SPEIGHT’S GOLDEN PALE ALE Beer Style First Brewed Pale Ale 2012 Alcohol Level Colour 4.0 15 Bitterness 20.0 Energy (kilojoules/100ml) 150 Calories (/100ml) 36 Flavour characteristics: It combines spicy flavours and aromas from Motueka hops balanced against caramelised toffee like flavours of crystallized malted barley and chocolate malt. This creates a beautifully balanced, easy drinking ale with a zesty aromatic character. SPEIGHT’S OLD DARK Beer Style First Brewed Alcohol Level Colour Bitterness Energy (kilojoules/100ml) Calories (/100ml) English Porter 1991 4.0 90 23.5 150 36 Flavour characteristics: This dark ale has roasted malt character with a hint of chocolate. The flavour has been balanced with extra hops and rounded out with just enough sweetness. SPEIGHT’S DISTINCTION ALE Beer Style First Brewed Alcohol Level Traditional Dark Ale 1994 4.0 Colour Bitterness Energy (kj/100ml) Calories (/100ml) 40 17 172 41 Flavour characteristics: This is a dark lager style beer. It sets itself apart from typical lagers through the subtle sweetness of slightly caramelised malts with relatively little hop bitterness or flavour from the Green Bullet and Pacific Jade hops. The darker speciality malts provide a more complex malty caramel flavour that gives this brew a well rounded character. SPEIGHT’S TRIPLE HOP PILSNER Beer Style First Brewed Pilsener 2002 Alcohol Level Colour 4.0 12 Bitterness Energy (kj/100ml) 31 190 Calories (/100ml) 45 Flavour characteristics: The first thing that strikes you about the Triple Hop Pilsner is the light golden colour true to the pilsner style of beer. Being a pilsner it’s a hop dominated brew, in this case we use the hop varieties; Cascades, Green Bullet and Nelson Sauvin. These give the initial hit of citrus fruit and fresh green hop character. It’s the hop sharpness that gives a refreshingly crisp taste on the palate at first. Then the classic pilsner malt flavour kicks in to provide a light malty biscuit background, the slight bitterness of the hops. SPEIGHT'S CIDER Beer Style Cider First Brewed Alcohol Level May 2011 4.6 Colour Energy (kilojoules/100ml) 7.9 EBC 171.58 Calories (/100ml) 40.85 Flavour characteristics: Speight’s brings you a well balanced, refreshing cider. The full bodied profile comes from the batch fermentation of juice sourced from 100% New Zealand grown apples, and is expertly coupled to a dry finish, which leaves you wanting more of this amber cider. SPEIGHT'S SUMMIT LAGER Beer Style Lager First Brewed June 2008 Alcohol Level 4.0 Energy (kilojoules/100ml) 135 Calories (/100ml) 31 Flavour characteristics: Brewed with only natural ingredients, Speight's Summit Lager is a smooth flavoured lager free of artificial additives and preservatives. With the addition of the Pacific Hallertau hop variety added late in the brew. Speight's Summit Lager delivers a smooth, crisp and refreshing taste with less of the maltiness associated with Speight's Gold Medal Ale. SPEIGHT’S PORTER Beer Style Porter First Brewed 2002 Alcohol Level 5.0 Colour 155 Bitterness 27 Energy (kj/100ml) 181 Calories (/100ml) 43 Flavour characteristics: Speight’s Porter is a red-black beer with a rich, robust palate and complex full aromas. A blend of crystal, caramalt, roasted wheat and chocolate malt combine to give a complex, smoky, mocha aroma and a rich coffee flavour which finishes on a subtle chocolate note. SPEIGHT’S WHEAT BEER Beer Style Wheat Beer First Brewed Alcohol Level Colour Bitterness 2013 5.0 19.0 16.0 Energy (kj/100ml) 178 Calories (/100ml) 40 Flavour characteristics: A wheat beer with four speciality malts that add an extra caramalised flavour. Amber in colour with a cloudy appearance because it’s unfiltered, the beer yeast adds its own fruity, clove, citrus like character. The kitchen have rustled up a great selection of Southern favourites with generous portions to suit a real hunger. As master brewer, I have prepared a few tasting notes and selected the perfect partner for these great dishes.
