The weekday field trip-style program is designed for public, private and home school groups and includes ski or snowboard lessons as well as education about winter first aid and the ecology of the Spring Mountain National Recreation Area. Last year, more than 400 students from local schools participated. The program kicks off in January 2013 and runs through the end of March. Scholarships are also available for children whose families cannot afford the registration fee; applications are available at www.skilasvegas.com. Complimentary transportation will be available for schools that book the recommended 30 or more days in advance. As a parent, you are your kids’ nutrition role model. They’ll develop their own taste buds, but they’ll mimic your attitude towards eating and exercise. Try to remain neutral: be careful not to place too much emphasis on unhealthy treats as a reward or be too candid about a “diet”. 1. Food should be fun. Mealtime can be quality time spent with family or friends. Get your kids involved in the cooking or food shopping process. Most kids will eat any meal that they helped prepare 2. Always eat breakfast. Studies show that children who eat breakfast perform better in school and have less behavioral problems. Breakfast also plays an important role in maintaining a healthy body weight. Try L Kid’s Health and W ellness whole-grain, low sugar cereal with skim milk or eggs, whole wheat toast, and turkey bacon or sausage. 3. Incorporate variety into your family’s daily diet. Different colored fruits and vegetables have different vitamins and benefits. For a balanced diet, a variety of food should be consumed. Sticking to the same foods each day could cause boredom, and create habits or food rituals in kids. Try serving a different fruit or vegetable each day for a morning snack. 4. If needed, hide the veggies. Yes, you want your children to enjoy vegetables and not put up a fight when 6 ParentsGuide of Las Vegas January 2013 they are on their plate. But, that may take time. Hide vegetables in items like tomato sauce, casseroles, and soups. You can finely grate carrots or zucchini and add them to pancake batter or muffins. 5. Plan ahead and shop smart. Some families end up throwing away up to 30% of the food they purchase. Produce goes bad, leftovers are not eaten, or something is left open and becomes stale. Save money by planning meals and snacks on a weekly basis. Clip coupons and buy what’s on sale. Cook protein and whole grains in bulk and add different vegetables, spices, and sauces to mix it up for different meals. 6. Pack healthy snacks. That certainty that setting aside “homework time,” limiting TV and recreational Web surfing and staying in close contact with teachers would lead to top grades all year long? Unfortunately the mid-point of the school year can be a “make or break” time for addressing any problems that have held your son or daughter back. Taking a close look at the following indicators will help you determine if your child’s habits and overall approach to school are making the grade: Indicator #1: Grades and conferences Take a look at your child’s overall grades during the first half of the year. If you believe your child could have done better, talk directly with teachers to determine any issues that are impacting his or her progress. It’s also important to tell the teacher about any issues that may affect your child’s academic success. Family tension, financial concerns, health issues or marital problems directly impact a child’s ability to concentrate in school. Creating a partnership R between school and home is a responsibility that both parents and teachers share. Indicator #2: Standardized test results In recent years, parents and students have paid the most attention to standardized tests during the spring – when many states and districts administer exams that now determine a student’s ability to graduate or move on to the next grade. But you can get a good idea of which skills should be strengthened in advance by taking a second look at the results of other standardized exams that may have been given during the fall. Pay attention to these areas as he or she prepares for the tests that will be given in just a few months. Indicator #3: Homework While some students tend to complete homework successfully all year, many may have fallen out of the “homework habit” as the December holidays approached. After a long break, January is a good time to ramp up for the coming months by re-establishing routines, such as setting time aside for homework each afternoon or evening and maintaining a specific area of your house or apartment specifically for homework. 8 ParentsGuide of Las Vegas January 2013 Indicator #4: The Work/Life Balance While sports, clubs and other schoolrelated leisure activities can make the educational experience much more wellrounded and rewarding, they should never become more important than academic progress. It’s important to find the right balance between leisure and learning. Take a look at your child’s academic success during the first half of the year and weigh it against all of the extracurricular activities. Were there enough hours in a typical day last semester to keep up with schoolwork while enjoying every activity? Dr. Raymond J. Have a small snack on hand every few hours between meals and stay hydrated with water or sugar-free beverages. Invest in portable containers and coolers so you can travel with healthy snacks. Try homemade trail mix with dried fruit and nuts, fruits or vegetables, homemade smoothies, or whole grain crackers with low fat cheese. 7. Stay hydrated. Often, we mistake hunger for thirst. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. The old standby is to drink 8 glasses per day, and that remains to be a good recommendation. Drink more if exercising. Listen to your body and drink enough water so you never feel thirsty. 8. Be active every day. Exercise is a key component for overall wellness and maintaining a healthy body weight. Take your family pet for a walk after dinner, encourage participation in sports, or play an active video game. Again, set the example- exercise is fun! 9. Rest and recover. Getting a good night’s sleep is an essential factor in living a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Sleep allows growing muscles to recover, strengthens immune system and prepares the mind and body for the following day. Try to turn off electronics and have a regular bed time. These ten tips should help keep your family healthy this year! Also important are keeping up with yearly doctor, dentist, and other medical appointments for you and your children. Get treatment for any ailments as soon as possible, and this includes your weight. Randall Miller, MD, is the Medical Director at Medi-Weightloss Clinics® in Henderson NV. Being overweight can lead to or worsen many health problems such as sleep apnea, depression, diabetes, hypertension, and more. My staff and I can help you achieve a healthy body weight and learn sound strategies to remain there for life. Yes, Parents are Role Models By Icia Reid-Sandulak our children model your behaviors in many ways. Whatever you do, your children are watching. You know the old saying “do as I say, but not as I do”. As parents you know that this is not a realistic goal for your children. Your children are more likely to do as you do, since you are the first and most important teacher in their life. You want your children to model your good behaviors, and only the good ones, right? Your children look up to you as their parent, their guide, their hero, and their mentor. If you around fighting with your neighbors , friends, and family, or ignoring rules, or even giving your middle finger to those who offend you, that is behavior your children will see as appropriate when they are interacting with their peers. Your children are watching when you think they are not! On the bright side, you can take comfort in knowing that you are teaching positive behaviors. Don’t forget that you serve as role models not only through direct interaction with your children, but also though example shown with your attitude and behavior when you interact with others. Y Icia Reid-Sandulak , has been working with children for the last 20 years. She has a background in Social Work and is the mother of four children, one son and three daughters. Presently, she is the director of Apple Grove Foster Care Agency and invites anyone who aspires to be a foster parent to contact the office for information. Nevada Prepaid Tuition Program T he Nevada Prepaid Tuition Program has been helping families across the state become better prepared to meet the rising costs of a college education since its inception in 1998. It continues to be an attractive tax advantaged program alternative to exhausting family savings or depending solely on student loans when sending a student to college. Along with the other Nevada 529 College Savings Plans administered through the Nevada State Treasurer’s Office, this Program is designed to help parents, family, and friends maximize the opportunity of saving for college. Since inception, nearly 15,000 contracts have been purchased by Nevadans, and enrollment continues to grow. Last year alone, accounts rose by 38.7%, following a 15% increase in 2011. Newborns to 9th graders are able to be enrolled in the program. The Nevada Prepaid Tuition Program provides parents piece of mind, knowing they are doing something to address the rising cost of tuition for their children. Several affordable plan options, including flexible payment plans starting as little as $36 per month, are available. Contract holders can select from five different tuition plans and can pay for their contract in a lump sum payment, over a five year period, or monthly until their child graduates from High School. Earnings are tax-deferred until the contract beneficiary attends college, and are then tax-exempt as long as the funds are used for tuition costs. Despite looming increases in Nevada university college tuition prices recently announced by the Nevada System of Higher Education, 2013 contract prices for Nevada Prepaid Tuition plans have remained the same! Nevada State Treasurer Kate Marshall and the College Savings Board of Nevada are committed to keeping college affordable for Nevadans, and have demonstrated that commitment with this year’s pricing announcement. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to ACT NOW and enroll their children in this valuable program through February 28th, 2013 when the 2013 open enrollment period concludes. Enrollments for newborns are accepted through June 30th, 2013. Visit NVPrepaid.gov or call 1-888-477-2667 today! Your child will emulate your behavior, so watch out for the following traits in yourself: Honesty: Make sure you are as honest as you want your child to be. Don’t lie to your children or in front of them. Don’t excuse acts of dishonesty or deception by stating that this is an exception. Don’t be a hypocrite. Avoid putting down negative behaviors that you yourself do, such as speeding, drinking or smoking. Demonstrate your moral convictions by paying whatever price is necessary to do what is right, such as inconvenience, loss of money, approval and even employment. Respect: Listen and respect your children’s views. Demonstrate self-restraint and maintain your own self-discipline with respect to violence, yelling or other displays of temper. Use only the language you want your children to use. Avoid petty behavior and power plays especially where your S children are concerned. Mutual respect is an essential quality in any parent/child relationship. This respect must be nurtured continuously to build and maintain a happy, healthy relationship. Responsibility: Admit when you are wrong and take whatever consequences are coming to you when you are wrong, and expect the same from your children. Don’t shift blame and excuse your own shortcomings or mistakes and expect the same from your children. Assign reasonable age-appropriate responsibilities to your kids and assign consequences if they fail to perform their duties. Make sure that your children keep their commitments at home, at school and in extracurricular activities. This means if you say you will do something you follow through, just as you expect your child to do. Fairness: General rules of fairness are necessary to keep peace in any household. Make sure you don’t resort to arbitrary power to get your way. Treat your children equally and fairly and be open to reasonable discussion and criticism. Caring: Children are stakeholders in everything you do, so demonstrate compassion and respect for others, especially for your children. Never discount, belittle or trivialize your children’s feelings or fears. Be visibly charitable and involve your children in charities to support. Getting your kids to give back to their community or to those less fortunate than themselves is something that will enrich their lives for years, start early and stay consistent. The way you live will be remembered and copied by your children, so strive to be proud of your actions each and every day. If you do make a mistake use it as an opportunity to take responsibility, forgive yourself, acknowledge it as a mistake and use it as a teachable moment. Kids and adults alike should persevere through setbacks and strengthen the above principles to improve the relationships with those we love! Understanding Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) By Nancy Gill What is RSV? Respiratory syncytial virus, commonly known as RSV, is a virus that infects the lungs and breathing passages. RSV can be severe for infants under 6 months of age. It’s the most common cause of pneumonia in children under the age of 1 year in the US (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2010). Almost everyone gets RSV by the age of 2. Who is at risk? Children who are at high risk for a severe case of RSV are premature infants (those born early at less than 36 weeks), those under 2 years of age with a congenital heart condition or chronic lung disease, and anyone with a weakened immune system. Infants who are exposed to tobacco smoke and those whose mother smoked during pregnancy are also at risk. How is RSV spread? RSV is very contagious, spreading whenever someone infected with RSV coughs or sneezes and the infected droplets come in contact with your mouth, nose or eyes. What are the symptoms of RSV? The symptoms of RSV are similar to the common cold. Those with RSV may have a cough, runny nose, sneezing, fever and poor appetite. Infants may become irritable, have decreased activity and breathing difficulties (CDC, 2010). How can you treat RSV? Because RSV is a virus and not a bacterial infection, antibiotics won’t work. Make certain that your child receives plenty of fluids. You can use a cool mist vaporizer to keep the air moist. Try to have your child blow their nose frequently to remove the mucus. For infants, use a bulb syringe. When should you call your doctor? You should call your doctor immediately if your child develops any of the following symptoms (March of Dimes, 2010): • Difficulty breathing; • Wheezing (makes a ‘whistling’ sound when breathing); • Worsening cough; • Thick yellow or green nasal drainage; • Difficulty swallowing or sucking; • Fever; or • Looks blue around mouth or fingertips. 24 ParentsGuide of Las Vegas January 2013 How can you prevent your child from getting RSV? There is no vaccine to prevent RSV. But you can help to prevent the spread of RSV. The RSV virus can live on surfaces for several hours (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases [NIAID], 2008). Clean surfaces that may be contaminated with the RSV virus with soap and water or disinfectant. There are many surfaces that we may not think about such as doorknobs, toys, phones, tables, pens and pencils: But what else can you do to protect your child? • Keep your child away from people who have cold symptoms. • Stay away from crowded areas, such as in shopping malls, grocery stores, etc. • Always wash your hands with soap and water before touching your child.
