The Andaman and Nicobar group of Islands of Bay of Bengal is one of the
34 biodiversity hotspots of the world. The Andaman group of islands are
included in the Indo-Burmese hotspot and the Nicobar group of islands are
in the Sundaland hotspot. The uniqueness of Andaman Nicobar islands is
that it is one of the few places on earth where biodiversity rich ecosystems on
earth-coral reefs and tropical rainforests are next to each other.
T he Andaman and Nicobar group of Islands of Bay of Bengal is one of the 34 biodiversity
hotspots of the world. The Andaman group of islands are included in the Indo-Burmese
hotspot and the Nicobar group of islands are in the Sundaland hotspot. The other hotspots
of Indian subcontinent are Western Ghats-Sri Lanka and Himalya. The uniqueness of
Andaman Nicobar islands is that it is one of the few places on earth where biodiversity
rich ecosystems on earth-coral reefs and tropical rainforests are next to each other.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands consist of 306 islands and associated rocks and
rocky outcrops is situated between 6°
45’ N to 13° 41’ N and 92° 12’ E to 93°
57’ E. The total geographical area is 8,
249 km² with a coastline of 1,962 km.
This archipelago is separated from
mainland India by almost 1000 km; the
nearest landmass in the north is
Myanmar, about 300 Km north of the
northern-most island in the Andaman
Group. The closest landmass to the
Great Nicobar Island in south is Sumatra, A view of Andman & Nicobar Island
which is about 145 km.
The Andaman group of islands is made up of North, Middle and South Andaman Islands.
The altitude here ranges from 0-732 m, the Saddle Peak in North Andaman Island being
the highest. The Nicobars are separated from the Andamans by the 10° Channel, a
wide gap of 160 km with heavy tidal flows. The Mount Thullier with an altitude of 670m
is the highest peak in the Nicobar group.
Geologically, the Andamans are considered to be the extensions of the submerged Rakhine
Yomas (Arakan Yomas) mountain range of Myanmar. The Nicobar group is considered
to be of volcanic origin, with coral reefs contributing to the raise of islands. Barren
Island, in northern Andaman is the only active volcano in the subcontinent.
The Andaman and Nicobar islands have a warm and moist tropical climate. The
temperature ranges from 18°C to 35° C. These islands experience both the Northeast
and the Southwest monsoons. The average annual rainfall ranges from 3,000 to 3,500
mm. The islands also experience cyclones, accompanied by very strong winds.
Flora
Tropical rainforests with tall trees extending to the coast is very

barnacles, prawns, shrimps, crabs, lobsters and mantis
shrimps are known. The diversity of molluscs is still under
documentation. More than 1150 fish species under 507
genera of 151 families have been recorded from the seas
around the islands. These species occur in freshwater,
brackish water, coastal waters and offshore. Fishes like
shark, sardine, mackerel, trevelly, catfish, mullet,
ribbonfish, barracuda, grouper, snapper, seer fish and tuna
form important fish groups in commercial fishery. The
seas are also home to endangered marine fishes such as
Whale Shark, Giant Grouper, Sawfish and other species
of sharks.

trees such as Dipterocarpus alatus, D. grandiflora, D.

National Camp for VIPNET Club
will adopt a species, that may be an animal, birds or even
an insect. Based on your regular observation for 8-12
months, you have to write a report by highlighting role of
that species in its immediate environment including its
current status, kind of threat being faced by it and its role
as part of food chain in that ecosystem. Your observations
about its complete life cycle and its behaviour should be
an integral part of your report.
Vigyan Prasar has developed three manuals on
identification of Fish, Dragonfly and Bamboos. The clubs
interested in taking up project on these species may write
to VP for the manuals.
3. Documentation of local Bio-diversity: - Dr.
Madhav Gadgil is developing a format for documenting the
local bio-diversity. Soon the same will be made available to
the interested clubs.
As
you know that this year is being observed as
International Year of Bio-diversity (IYB 2010). Vigyan Prasar
had already planned and finalized the programmes and
activities for the year. All the activities have been designed
in such a way to involve all VIPNET clubs in taking the
message of IYB 2010 to more and more people through
action oriented programmes and activities. We have already
given information about the project activities which could
be taken up by the clubs. (For details Please see VIPNET
Newsletters of March 2010 (for Hindi) and April 2010
(For English) .
On the website of Vigyan Prasar all the resource material
and other related information is available with a
downloadable feature. Based on the reports of project and
activities undertaken by clubs, selection of best 200 reports
will be made by VP. Two members of the selected project
along with the coordinator of the club will be invited to
participate in the National Camp. Once again we are giving
you same information about the project and activities in
brief.
Short Term Project
4. Project based on Hypothesis Testing: - Under the
guidance of Dr. Madhav Gadgil, VP has developed a series
of hypothesis based on various aspects of bio-diversity.
You can select a hypothesis as the short term project activity
for your club from the suggested list. The minimum duration
for which you have to undertake this activity will be three
to four months. The testing of the hypothesis would be
undertaken through Hypothetico-deductive” method.
What VIPNET Clubs are expected to Do
You have to select one activity out of the first three
activities (mentioned elsewhere as long term activities) and
the 4th one is compulsory for all the members. The first
three activities are in the nature of long-term activities of a
club and will continue for two to three years. The fourth
one is short-term project for a duration of three to four
months ( kindly see the list of project hypothesis). The
selection of the club for national camp will be made on the
assessment of the overall work done by the club and how
the club has contributed in taking the message of IYB 2010
to people in their area. It is mandatory for all interested
club to register with VP by selecting/specifying the activity
which they are proposing to undertake. The reports of all
clubs, registered with VP for this National Camp should
be received by the end of December 31, 2010 to
"Exploring Nature Desk", Vigyan Prasar, A-50,
Institutional Area, Phase II, Sector-62, NOIDA. You
can also register on-line for this programme. More details

The last date for receiving the project for participation
in the National Camp has been extended upto January

The Long-Term Project/Programmes of Club
1. “Our Tree”- Under this project the members of
each club are suppose to plant the saplings of trees in a
selected area ( it may be in school or outside the school)
and nurture them at least for two to three years. Along
with this, each club has to maintain the record of the
activities built up around the tree in a specially designed

The bird is Great White Pelican ( Pelecuanus
onocrotalus Linnaeu) known as Hawasil (Hindi);
Gorapullo (Bengali); Chinkabatu (Telugu);
Deohans (Assamese); Kulakeda (Tamil); Kotumpannom
(Malayalam). The great white pelican is one of the largest
flying birds in the world, with a wingspan of nearly three
metres. Although it is rather clumsy on land, it is fast
and graceful in the water or in the air. The pelican has a
huge beak with a pouch underneath, which is used to
scoop fish out of the water. The pouch is stretchy and
can hold several litres of water, which is squeezed out,
whilst the fish is swallowed whole. The great white
pelican is a superb flier and is able to fly for a whole day
and night without stopping, covering a distance of about
300 miles. Flock float buoyantly or rest on mudbanks
preening themselves. They fish by cooperative effort,
swimming in a semi-circle, driving the fish before them
into the shallows with vigorous splashing of their great
wings, and scooping them up in their pouch which acts
like landing net. They are partly resident and partly winter
visitor from Punjab to Assam but occasionally in south
India. You can spot them usually in large congregations
on jheels and lagoons.

District Level Science Exhibition on “Climate Changes”

an Environmental Awareness Cycle Ralley on theme “Our
Environoment Is In Our Hands.” In this rally, a distance of

ralley planted.
