April, 2016 Banking Woes for Indians banks to continue in FY17: S&P Global rating agency Standard and Poor’s today said Indian banking sector might continue to face tough times over next 12 months as their asset quality and capitalsation under pressure. The asset quality and capitalization of India’s banking sector is likely to remain under pressure in due to tepid domestic industrial activity, and subdued profitability and high leverage in some corporate sectors, S&P said in statement. The stand-alone credit profiles and ratings on some public sector bankc get lowered, given their weakening asset quality and capitalisation. The non-performing loan ratios of Indian banks with high exposure to troubled sectors will continue to rise. The credit costs with a backlog of provisions will increase, said Amit Pandey, credit analyst with Standard & Poor’s. These factors could strain the capitalization of banks with below-average profitability, particularly as capital demands are likely to soar as Basel-III norms get implemented. Rating agency released report titled “Indian Banks Face An Uphill Road This Year”. S&P expects loan growth in India’s banking sector to be 11-13% in fiscal 2017 (year beginning April 1, 2016). The growth in retail loans will continue to outpace that in corporate loans, in line with the trend over the past two years. The profitability of Indian banks to decline over the next two to three quarters on recent cut in base lending rates, and their credit costs are likely to remain high. Bengaluru-based real estate firm Salarpuria Sattva Goup has raised the capital from Blackstone to fund its project at Knowledge City, where it is building 6.5 million sq. ft of office space that is partly leased. The project is expected to be completed in 4-5 years. The investment is pegged to boost investor interest in the property market of Hyderabad, at a time when the city is inching back to normalcy after prolonged political unrest. Bijay Agarwal, managing director, Salarpuria Sattva Group, confirmed the transaction but did not give more details. Salarpuria Sattva has a large residential and commercial office portfolio of projects in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Pune and Goa. Last year, it bought a 20-acre property in Hyderabad’s Tolichowki area from Bayer Bioscience Pvt. Ltd. The office space sector saw steady growth in 2015 amid a prolonged slowdown in India’s residential space due to tepid demand, rise in prices and unsold inventory. Private equity funds and property developers bought office space at a brisk pace with plans to build new information technology parks and special economic zones, in sharp contrast to the freeze on residential project launches. MIDNIGHT REPORTER 7 April, 2016 Indian residential property to attract $1 billion investment YD Designs Official & Original Residential property in India is expected to receive $1 billion investment this year, given its attractive rate of returns averaging at a high of 20-22 per cent per annum, an industry expert said. “Private Equity funds in Indian real estate sector has already raised USD 420 million in the first two months of this year, compared to USD 520 million for the whole of last year,” said Rubi Arya, executive vice chairman of the Mumbai-based Milestone Capital Advisors Ltd. Mid-segment housing and affordable housing can take returns to as high as 20-22 per cent per annum through hybrid investing, that is capital security plus equity upside, she said. “We feel that with the Real Estate Bill mandate, availability of deals for Private Equity firms will certainly go up,” she said, adding that the reforms in the real estate sector will also help further accelerate fund raising and investment opportunities both for residential and commercial sectors. “With such positive developments, the India story is growing by leaps and bounds and it is just a matter of time when this sector begins its upward journey once again, albeit after a prolonged period of gloom,” she added. Costs on real estate construction are seeing stability with fuel prices down, which leaves developers with overall margins for positive growth. “Investors can look forward to far higher transparency and ease of doing business with developers with the recently passed real estate bill. This has led to a lot of warming up of Non Resident Indians (NRIs) and Foreign Direct Investments towards Indian real estate,” she noted. The availability of foreign capital will naturally increase with the government permitting NRI investments into domestic Alternate Investment Funds. The Real Estate Investment Trusts will soon see listings by developers and thus lifting the commercial reality market to a highly profitable investment climate, according to Arya. Tourism companies in Antalya have focused on wedding tourism in an attempt to overcome the setback to the tourism sector caused by Russia, which started discouraging its citizens from visiting Turkey after the military jet downing incident last November. According to West Mediterranean Development Agency (BAKA) Secretary-General Mehmet Sýrrý Özen, the cost of all Indian weddings held abroad per year vary between $1 billion and $20 billion, adding that the Turkish tourism sector aims to hold at least 20 Indian weddings in Antalya a year. The agency also conducts focused studies regarding wedding tourism in India. Wedding tourism has become increasingly popular for couples in Turkey and the world in recent years. The major obstacle to wedding tourism in Antalya is that foreign airline companies do not operate direct flights to the city. Organization consulting companies, which have been conducting research and development studies on the Indian market since 2013, introduced Antalya’s opportunities to many companies that present ideas about destination weddings in the Far East, Sri Lanka and Dubai. As a result of these efforts, Indian companies started introducing Antalya on their websites as a strong, new wedding destination, and informed Indians about the city. As such, Indians have started thinking of Antalya as an alternative wedding destination. Black Panthers, the Face of Wildlife Tourism in Karnataka Wildlife photographers are now rallying behind the black panthers or black leopards in the forests of Karnataka. In the last fortnight, Kabini safari zone in Nagarhole Tiger Reserve has recorded over a dozen sightings of these melanistic leopards. The sighting of black panther in the tourism zone has tremendously increased demand for wildlife safaris in Nagarhole in the last few weeks. Similar sightings are being reported in the safari zone of Kali Tiger Reserve (KTR) at Dandeli, which has the highest number of black leopards in the wild. Black leopards or melanistic leopards are nothing but black mutated animals of the same species. Their pitch dark colour, cat eyes and elusive nature makes the sightings prized ones. An ongoing survey in Kali Tiger Reserve about the black leopards has some interesting facts. About 14 per cent of the total leopard population in Dandeli Forests is black in colour. Homes from Vijayanagar Era To Open Up for Tourists If you are planning a trip to Hampi, you could check into a homestay dating back to the 15th century. Thanks to the efforts of Kishkinda Trust, 106 houses will soon be converted into business models in the form of heritage homestays. This year, at least six heritage homes will open its doors to tourists. Many of the houses which are being handpicked by the trust were built in the 15th and 16th centuries. The project is focussed on Karnataka’s pride and the World Heritage Sites of UNESCO - Hampi and Anegundi. The Kishkinda Trust in Anegundi and the newly-formed Deccan Heritage Foundation are working with entrepreneurs to renovate these dilapidated houses into swanky homestays. This project idea was mooted several years ago. Anegundi is known as the birth place of Lord Hanuman and is the first residential habitat of Vijayanagara dynasty. The owners of most of the old houses in Anegundi and Hampi live away from the heritage structures. According to the agreement, the property developers will pay the rent of these homestays to the owners. The owners will get back the renovated homes after five years. Rich cultural diversity, historic monuments of the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal era, beautiful valley of Kashmir and the tropical Malabar coast of Kerala, tourist destinations in India attract millions of people from across the world every year. Many tourist destinations, including the historic city of Agra, popularly known as the city of Taj, have emerged as one of the finest tourist destinations in Asia. Ipso facto, tourism in India has shown a phenomenal growth, especially in the last two decades, with the Ministry of Tourism making concerted efforts by intensifying the “Incredible India” campaign. The tourist attractions also include natural beauty stretching from the high mountains of the Himalayas, the Ganges and the sands of the Thar desert. The Incredible India campaign was launched in 2002 to project the country as an attractive tourist destination by showcasing different aspects of Indian history and culture. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, the tourism sector in India is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 7.9 percent till 2023, making the country the third fastest growing tourism destination over the next decade. According to the statistics issued by the Tourism Ministry and the Bureau of Immigration, the number of foreign tourists in India was 5.78 million in 2010, 6.31 million in 2011, 6.58 million 2012, 6.97 million in 2013, 7.68 million in 2014 and 6.28 million in 2015 (Jan-Oct). Besides its rich cultural heritage well preserved in the historic cities of Delhi, Agra, Fatehpur Sikri, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Nalanda, Mumbai and Mysore, India has ethnic culture, better known as “Unity in Diversity,” as the South Asian nation has millions of residents speaking varied languages and hundreds of dialects, follow a variety of religious traditions and live in a multitude of urban and rural centers. MIDNIGHT REPORTER 12 April, 2016 Amitabh Bachchan starrer ‘Te3n’ to attract tourists to Bengal Japan rolls out red carpet for Indian Tourist The Indian traveller is going places, and Japan is his hot new destination. Japanese airline ANA will launch a brand new 787 Dreamliner for its Mumbai-Tokyo daily direct schedule. Buoyed by the big demand and bigger potential, ANA is pressing a custom-made Boeing into service on the sleep-in-Mumbai, wake-up-in-Tokyo route. “From the full-flat bed that suits the needs of Indian flyers and staggered seats to ensure aisle for everyone in Business Class, to a comfortable Economy cabin in the wide-bodied plane and even Jain meals onboard, the new plane will reflect a lot of research and feedback that we have got from our Indian flyers,” says Tsuneya Katagiri, general manager - Mumbai office, ANA, adding that the attractive fare of just Rs29,000 is part of the promotional campaign to create awareness about the airline - and Japan as a destination, especially in the MICE and tourist segment. Thailand to Focus on quality Tourism from India Ranked as one of the top favourite international destination for the Indian travellers, Thailand welcomed around 1.06 million visitors from India in 2015. With this steady growth from India market, the South East Asian destination is now focusing on attracting quality tourists rather than increasing numbers. Speaking to T3, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, Minister of Tourism & Sports, Kingdom of Thailand said, “In terms of figures the number of Indian travellers to Thailand has grown up to 1.06 million, which was about 14 to 15 per cent increase. India now ranks number 6 in overall international arrival to Thailand; after China, Malaysia, Japan, Korea and Laos. In terms of revenue, the spending of Indian travellers has increased more than the global average. In 2016, we are aiming to be a quality destination. In the past, travellers had a notion that Thailand is a cheap destination. But this has actually changed; travellers have started maturing and are looking out for unique experiences. I believe that the travellers from the India market have matured as well. We can see this by the spending pattern, the choice of hotels, and choice of destinations.” “This year, Thailand will be targeting quality tourists, rather than focusing on numbers. We want tourists to stay longer and spend more money in Thailand. With new activities and destinations we believe we will achieve our target of becoming a quality leisure destination”, added Wattanavrangkul. Hussainsagar to Have Amphibious Tourist Bus Soon A recreational amphibious vehicle with ability to run both on water and road will be introduced at Hussainsagar in the city to promote tourism. The Telangana tourism and culture department proposes to introduce amphibious bus service in and around the Hussainsagar within six months’ time. The bus runs like a normal coach on the road but, when in water, uses a hull to float and is powered by jets and will be equipped with indispensable accessories like life-jackets. The state government has given green signal to the tourism department to introduce amphibious bus service at the earliest. The proposal for such buses was made by minister for tourism and culture Azmeera Chandulal on Thursday at review meeting with officials of the tourism department. Speaking to Express, tourism secretary Burra Venkatesham said the government had directed the department to proceed with the project. “Telangana will become the first state in the country to procure the amphibious bus and no other state is operating such bus. When it becomes operational here, the service will give a fillip to tourism in Hyderabad,” he added. Odisha Government Goes for Green in Tourism The Forest and Environment Department has set its agenda clear for boosting eco tourism in the State. Over next five years, it plans to develop 100 destinations, draw in over two lakh tourists, generate employment for 2,000 locals, build capacity of 300 forest staff and create a brand for the State. While it has prepared a budget of Rs 100 crore for creating additional amenities and eco-friendly infrastructure, a dedicated Eco Tourism Cell is all set to be made operational in a week. The plan of action, presented before the all Secretaries meeting earlier this week, was shared with all wildlife DFOs of the State here on Thursday. The officers were asked to map unique destinations, take local community on board and chart out a plan. The message was loud and clear. No mass tourism would be allowed and numbers will be decided only after assessing carrying capacity. He said since the film is a thriller so they want a deal with the producers that West Bengal Tourism gets a credit in the trailer. “We may even have a Bengal tourism advertisement along with the film trailer because we are soon launching our TV commercial with Shahrukh Khan. Rajasthan wants tourists all day & night at Ranthambore THE Rajasthan Forest Department is planning to throw open the Ranthambore National Park to tourists for the entire day - and night - in a move that wildlife activists say flouts “the basic principles of tiger conservation”. The park is currently open to tourists for six hours every day three hours every morning and evening - from October to June. Forest Minister Rajkumar Rinwa confirmed that two proposals, to open the park for tourists through the day and conduct night visits, were discussed during a recent meeting of the state wildlife board - the period will remain the same. But activists said they would approach the Supreme Court to block the move, saying it violates the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) guidelines issued to states on directions from the apex court.
