A Chat with...
Jim Davis
What class are you teaching?
I am currently teaching the Transition
to Trainer class. It is the “Capstone”
class required for all individuals
engaged in any of the trades which
offer apprenticeships through the state
of Wisconsin. As the title suggests,
the class is meant to foster the final
segment of the apprenticeship training.
Any trades that require apprenticeship
training would attend this type of class,
from electricians and steamfitters to
cosmetologists and painters. I have
worked with students in a wide variety
of trades at BTC for the past 35 years.
What do you like best about
teaching at Blackhawk?
Students-The students enter the
Transition to Trainer Class classroom
with a vast wealth of knowledge and
experience they are willing to share
with the other students.
Staff-Over the years I have
encountered a number of staff
personalities and each one of them
brings a certain style with them and
willingness to help when needed.
Facilities- I have found the facilities to
be constantly updated as technology
advances.
What interesting things would
people like to know about the class?
There are so many different
backgrounds, experiences and
credentials found in one room. With
the talent and expertise gathered
there you could pretty much build a
home just from the students in that
one room. This class was designed to
foster a better understanding of human
interaction between the journey level
worker and the apprentice, and the
diversity of the students makes for a
great learning environment.
What kind of background do you
need to teach this type of class?
Having previous apprenticeship
experience is needed to facilitate
a class like this. I served a five year
apprenticeship in the plumbing
field and know that it is critical in
understanding what they are going
through. In this class it is important to
be flexible, understanding, empathetic,
and nonjudgmental, as well as having
the ability to relate to others and
appreciate their point of view.
Have you learned things from the
students you’ve taught at BTC?
Through a purely humanistic
standpoint it really hasn’t changed that
much; people are still people. They
may differ in appearance and look at
life a little differently from each other,
but we all still have the same basic
needs and wants. I also tell them that
we are all teachers in this class, I just
happen to be the one standing up
front. If people are willing to share who
they are with each other, we all learn.

Important Information & Refund Policy
Important Information:
• Early registration forms will not be accepted. All forms of
registration will be processed on the first day of registration
at 8:00 A.M. Registration forms will be processed on a first
come, first serve basis.
• If a class you registered for is full at the time of your
submission, you will be contacted by the College. You will be
put on a wait list in the order your registration was received.
The list will be monitored and you will be notified if an
opening becomes available. If an opening does become
available and you have been contacted by the College to
notify you of an open seat in the class, you will be provided
two (2) business days to respond. If no response is provided
within this timeframe, that seat will no longer be open to you
and we will move to the next person on the wait list.
• Class wait lists do not carry forward to subsequent semesters. If you are placed on a wait list for a class, no openings occur
in that class prior to its start date, and another section of that
class is not offered during the same semester, you will need
to submit a new registration form and payment the following
semester if that class is offered again.
Refund Policy
If you are unable to attend a class and withdraw prior to the
first day of class or a class is cancelled, a full refund will be
provided. A refund will not be issued if you withdraw from
the class after the first day of class, and a refund will not be
issued for any portion of the class fee if you stop attending
your class sessions.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE:
TODAY’S DIFFERENTIATOR IN EXCEPTIONAL LEADERS
Emotional Intelligence, also called EQ, is the ability to recognize
and manage emotions and relationships. It is a pivotal factor in
personal and professional success. IQ will get you in the door,
but it is your EQ, your ability to connect with others and manage
the emotions of yourself and others, that will determine how
successful you are. When you look at the truly extraordinary
leaders that inspire and make a difference, you will see that
they often do this by connecting with people at a personal and
emotional level. What differentiates them is not their IQ but their
EQ. Join us for this interactive workshop to gain that EQ edge.

In order to maintain your credibility as an educated
instructor, especially when standing in front of students,
one needs to reflect not only confidence in who they are
but also in the subject matter they are teaching. They must
also be able to handle the technology surrounding them.
The students expect and deserve the best that any given
instructor and classroom has to offer them.

What do you hope to instill in your students
through the Transition to Trainer class?
When teaching this class, I feel one of the most important
things for people to remember is to treat others with
respect, have compassion and to always use your apprentice
experience to help mentor others.
