ARIZONA GREYHOUND RESCUE Winter 2010 3 Help Wanted A major part of our board discussion recently has concerned the organization structure, and we have two openings that are critical to our success this year that we would really like to get filled quickly. First is Volunteer Director. This person will be responsible for managing our volunteer programs, including developing and coordinating volunteer recruitment efforts, receiving volunteer applications, and contacting applicants and arranging for them to begin work. Ideal experience includes prior experience recruiting and managing volunteers and excellent communication and computer skills. Next is the Education and Outreach Director. This individual will provide greyhound rescue education and information through a team of volunteers, making presentations to the general public, representing (or coordinating volunteers who represent) AGR at tabling events, workshops, demonstrations, public awareness fairs and meetings, and will network with community agencies to increase outreach activities beneficial to AGR. We would also like this individual to assist the Board in development and implementation of AGR-sponsored community awareness campaigns, for example activities for Volunteer Month (April) and National Adopt A Shelter Dog Month (October). The ideal candidate will have experience in community outreach, training/presentations and curriculum development, be an experienced public speaker with well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, and have experience leading groups and facilitating productive dialogue among diverse perspectives. In Closing Thank you all for all you do for our greyhounds! The fundraiser took in $6,000! Thank you to everyone who came out! Buddy Roo, greyhound to Gene, Jeanne, and Nick Ribas, chats it up with the jolly ole man himself. Though Buddy wouldn‘t divulge any of his wants and desires to Extra! Extra!, inside sources say he got everything he asked Santa for and more. That‘s a hound who knows how to work it! Fall Fest Biscuit Bake-Off winner, Alexis, found a very tasty way to keep the greyhounds captivated. Her recipe of Bisquik, egg, milk, cheese and shredded hot dog was deemed by the judging greyhounds as their prize winning choice! When Extra! Extra! asked Alexis what she was going to use the PetSmart gift card prize for, she simply stated, ―Rawhide.‖ ARIZONA GREYHOUND RESCUE Winter 2010 5 Save the Dates! Day 1: ―Here's a cute one... I couldn't find her and thought she was just sniffing crumbs in the kitchen. No. She was eating out of the big dry dog food bag...even though her dish was 5 feet away full of food. :) The dog food bag is now in the closet pantry. She wanted to follow me upstairs and hesitated at first but is now zipping up and down. She just had a crazy moment and start sprinting back and forth.... I'm learning that I need to have a camera at the ready.” as a toy. A couple trips to the dog park and she loved that. She was running around with a husky yesterday until some lady brought her pug in our section instead of the little dog area. Rush was doing great until the husky started barking at it. Rush then started barking and following it around. Thankfully, the pug lady then left.” Day 3: “She sleeps on her fluffy dog bed next to my bed and stays there all night, she's so good! She still tries to sneak Lauren's purple slipper. We tell her no and she drops it. We may wind up giving it to her As members of the AGR family... We like to keep track of our adopters, the name of their fur kids at the time they were adopted, or if a beloved fur kid has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. If you have moved, or changed your email address or phone number, please contact Terry Baker who maintains our records and provide him with this information. You can call him at 240-1533, or send snail mail to 6151 E. 29th Street, Tucson, AZ 85711, or you can email him at: [email protected]. ARIZONA GREYHOUND RESCUE Winter 2010 7 TM Can you help us turn our doggy dreams of finding a forever home into a reality? Arizona Greyhound Rescue needs you! In order to continue our endeavors in placing the greyhounds still coming in due to the Phoenix track closure and now the kennel bankruptcies, we are currently seeking individuals and families who can provide much needed foster homes! AGR has been taking in as many of the displaced greyhounds as possible, and it’s only because we have had the good fortune of having wonderful foster families of both past and present! Can you become part of the future? If you've thought of fostering in the past, now is the time to start. If you've fostered in the past and are thinking of doing it again, now is the time to be welcomed back. So, please consider taking in a greyhound.... watch them flourish and thrive in your home setting, then feel the gratification when they find their forever home… knowing YOU are the one who made it possible! For more information on fostering, please contact Cheryl Bennet at [email protected] www.azgreyhoundrescue.org 8 Roos & News The Girls (and one Boy) of Winter A D O P T M E! Idler is a sweet tempered, affectionate hound that dishes out kisses to gentle people. Living with an assortment of other dogs, her favorite playmate is a Great Dane puppy: she seems to prefer larger dogs as play mates. She is not destructive in the home and is house broken using a doggie door. She has wonderful house manners and does not try to get up on furniture. Idler has an affinity with schoolaged kids. She enjoys her morning walks, is good on the leash, and is very alert to rabbits and lizards, but obeys the command ‗leave it.‘ She is not compatible with small dogs or cats. Idler is a good watch dog because she barks when someone comes to the door or she spots something in the yard. She rides well in the car, and loves bully sticks and marrow bones. She is one sweetheart of a dog. Bandit is a real charmer and adapting well to home living. He is a gentle, happy, playful dog that loves his squeaky toys and will play fetch. He is fascinated with his reflection in the mirrors and likes to put his head on A his foster mom‘s shoulder. He plays D well with the other greyhound in the O home, loves his walks, does not pull P on the leash and rides well in the car. Bandit has a prey drive and T chases rabbits and birds, and when the neighbor‘s dog had the cheek to M come into Bandit‘s yard, he chased E! the dog out PDQ. Bandit knows his name and will usually come when called. Bandit loves everyone including kids. Loud noises startle him a little but he‘s figured out that the T.V. is not ‗out to get him,‘ and enjoys watching Animal Planet! ARIZONA GREYHOUND RESCUE Winter 2010 My name is Sara and I‘m about 6 years old. I was found wandering the streets of Nogales with a broken back leg. The vet said he could not save my leg, so now I get around quite well on three. I‘m an affectionate pooch with a sweet nature that yearns to be around loving people, but would do best as the only dog in the home. I get a little jealous and growl when I have to share cuddles with another dog, but I like cats. I need a plump doggie bed, all my own, and someone to love who will take real good care of me. So if you‘re up for a threelegged race, let me know. I bet I‘d win. A D O P T M E! 9 ADOPT ME! Dilly is living with other large dogs and relishing home living. At first, a little shy of strangers, Dilly warms up quickly and becomes very affectionate. Loud noises may startle her, but she is used to the vacuum. She is a good traveler, barks rarely and has learned the doggie door. She accepts crating up to 4 hours a day. Dilly is in good health with no food issues. She enjoys her morning romp but shows prey behavior toward small dogs, so she's probably not cat or small dog tolerant. Dilly accepts grooming and has learned the commands 'leave it' and 'no.' This is one smart and affectionate hound. She would do best in a home with another dog for company. Velvet is a five year old small black female. She has a small while patch on her chest and a couple of white toes. Velvet is very affectionate and wants to be a lap dog. She is very curious and loves to play with squeaky stuffed animals. She gets along with our other greyhounds, but gets very excited when she sees other dogs walk by the house. She definitely wants to eat every rabbit that she sees. She already knows how to use a dog door and knows that the big swimming pool is something to be avoided. ADOPT ME! www.azgreyhoundrescue.org Roos & News 10 AGR would like to give a Special Roo to: Mostly Bears and Mary Ann Neisz for raising $1500 by hosting a silent auction and Stein Waterbottle Bear Raffle. Some of you even surpassed the challenge and mailed in a lot more! We can’t thank you all enough! ARIZONA GREYHOUND RESCUE Winter 2010 11 It’s an East vs. In-Between vs. West Competition! Good News! We had such a successful Homes for the Holidays campaign with intaking and finding both foster and adoptive homes for our 50 greyhound goal, that we are now in need of stocking up on our kennel supplies! Hoooo, doggie, not only were the hounds keeping the kennel volunteers busy with feeding, treating, playing, giving meds, and getting bathes; but, the hounds also kept everyone busy with cleaning, sweeping, poop scooping, and washing bowls as well! So, to help the kennel crew maintain the kennel to dog-gone good satisfaction, we're going to designate February 2010 as KENNEL SUPPLY DRIVE MONTH! So now you're asking, what does the kennel need? Well, the kennel needs: quart size plastic bags, 13 gallon kitchen trash bags, paper towels, Neosporin©, large Milkbones© or Kirkland© Dog Biscuits, Kong© insertable treats or small dog cookies, bungee cords, hand soap, cleaners, and the ever popular Nylabone©. If you have spare collars, leashes, muzzles, and a can or so of a good quality minced dog food to use as a trick-the-dog pill induction method, we'll take that, too! The 3 locations where you can drop items off are: EASTSIDE IN-BETWEEN WESTSIDE Pantano Animal Clinic 8333 E. 22nd St. Silver Sea Jewelry & Gifts 330 N. 4th Ave. Ina Road Animal Hospital 7320 N. La Cholla Though the kennel is mostly in need of the small ticket items, if you have any oversized items like crates or cargo vans you'd like to donate, please email Pati at [email protected], or call 207-8855, and she will arrange pick up! If you are out-of-town, you can always use the enclosed envelope! ; ) As always, we thank you for your help as the lives you save... and pamper... are forever thankful! www.azgreyhoundrescue.org 12 Roos & News Peg Chivers Theresa Robarts Marissa Romeo Larry & Chris Parkhurst Ashlee Jontz Debbie Connell Tamyra & Russ Althof William & Sueanne McCreery Pati & Lonnie Pate Carol & Terry Sampson Amy Barnard Carol Ray Karen & Jim Scott Jane Wall Michael Fajardo Paul Fini & Christine Herriman Tiffany Barnes Pamela & Brian Freeman Chinook (Malcolm) Sketch and Donnie Autumn (Megan) Hillie (Sonny) *Gloria (Sophia) Bebe & Emily Charm (Luna) *Cheetah Trooper Mazzie Gordy Fiona Turbo Lady Haze Star Kit Q *Website Banner Dogs Phoenix Greyhound Park has Closed….. ...and our local goal of placing 50 greyhounds in a foster or adoptive home by January 15, 2010 was successful! With your dedication, we are making huge strides as our community learns of both the immediate and long term plights the dogs endure. Please, continue to join us in our efforts to place the retired, displaced greyhounds who are awaiting forever homes now, and those who will be awaiting forever homes in the future, by advocating, adopting, fostering, volunteering, and donating. Phoenix Greyhound Park has Closed….. ...however, the current plans by the owners are to still maintain the facilities in hopes that the legislature will reconsider the ‗racino‘ proposal which would allow the track to reopen in 2010. Count on us to stay on top of this story and to pass along post breaking developments. ARIZONA GREYHOUND RESCUE Winter 2010 13 For the human companions of the greyhounds that have passed, it must be painful to look at their doggie beds, their food dish, toys and collars . But remember, you saved them and offered them sanctuary, safety and love. They will never forget all you did to make their lives happy and joyful; and, for this, you have their heartfelt thanks and love throughout eternity. AGR Webmaster and Joker Media Vice President, Chris Tardiff, says, "When looking for my first dog, I knew I wanted to adopt one. I saw a picture of Kota and learned that she was being fostered and called right away. I visited her at the foster home and knew it was her I wanted to adopt. It has been 5 years now and she continues to bring me joy with the way she loves life." We welcome Chris and Kota into our AGR family; and, we thank him for his dedication and the innumerable hours he has spent creating the site which has resulted in a flood of compliments from around town, the country, and the world! www.azgreyhoundrescue.org 14 Roos & News by Glenda Taylor Continued from last issue…. For foster guardians and new adopters, here‘s a list of tips that may help you smoothly transition your greyhound from life at the track to life on the couch, and preserve your cherished valuable items, or sentimental knickknacks, not to mention your sanity! Remember: in many cases, you are caring for a puppy in an adult body. A lot of our greyhounds come to us under the age of 4 and, like a human toddler, require patience, consistency, vigilance, correction and love. AGR Tag & Adopter Address/Phone Tag: Your greyhound has been micro chipped so the yellow AGR tag needs to remain on the dog‘s collar. It has the telephone number for 24 PetWatch.com – 1-866-597-2424. If your dog gets loose, this will help someone locate you. A tag with your name, street address and phone number also needs to be on your greyhound‘s collar as this is another way to help your greyhound come home safely. Marking or Urinating: When first introduced to a home, especially if there are other dogs, male greyhounds may mark their territory for a couple of days, meaning your furniture! When this happens in your presence, send them immediately outside and praise them when they urinate in the yard. If marking occurs when you‘re absent from the home, local pet stores sell products such as PetZyme that removes pet stains and odor to prevent additional marking. Rinse off the furniture under attack, and liberally spray on the product. Consistent monitoring of your hound to ensure this is not repeated is a MUST. Exercise: One of the most important things you can do for your greyhound is walk its legs off. When greyhounds are walked several miles a day, it keeps them in good shape, engages their interest in the world around them, and tires them out. A tired pooch is a well behaved pooch. Email Notices Notice Arizona Greyhound Rescue is going green.. and red.. and blue. In an effort to reduce both waste and costs, AGR is producing an electronic color version of the newsletter. If you have any questions or would like to be walked thru the process, please contact Pati Pate at: [email protected]. ARIZONA GREYHOUND RESCUE Winter 2010 15 Mojo Sometimes in the face of tragedy, there is a ray of hope that shines through. With the closing of a major race track there are always dogs that slip through the cracks. Recently, Arizona Greyhound Rescue was contacted in an effort to save greyhounds from a breeding farm located outside of Phoenix. The owner had fallen on hard times and instead of contacting help, his greyhounds were left to starve to death. By the time authorities were contacted in November, many lives were lost. Alyssa While this is a great tragedy, 13 lives were saved. Those who were saved were covered in ticks and fleas, had tick fever, and the effects of starvation was heartbreaking. Even in the most horrible of conditions, greyhounds can be quite resilient. On February 6, 2010 AGR welcomed four new hounds into our family that are known as the Thanksgiving Greyhounds. Thanksgiving, as we are giving thanks for the lives that were spared. These wonderful creatures who once counted on their owner to care for them have now been given a second chance at life... and we need your help. Evan Carmen Alyssa, Mojo, Evan, and Carmen will need special care as they await their forever homes. $60 will cover the cost of each spay or neuter, and $160 will fund all of the anticipated veterinary care for each hound. Please consider sponsoring one of our Thanksgiving Greyhounds. They will be forever greytful! www.azgreyhoundrescue.org 8987 E. Tanque Verde Rd.
