H.E. Sir William H. Davidson, KGCHS, Lieutenant
Winter 2010 Official Publication of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem—Western USA Lieutenancy
Dear Knights and Ladies, brothers and sisters in Christ,
I am writing this on the Solemnity of Christ the King, the last Sunday of Ordinary Time and the beginning of extraordinary times for
the Church. I am overwhelmed today meditating on Christ as our King. In writing to the Colossians, St. Paul asserted that Christ is
―preeminent over all things.‖ But Christ‘s kingdom is also one of mercy and salvation, won for us only through his suffering and
resurrection. We are called to be good stewards of every gift entrusted to us by God and to use our gifts in His Service. Our strength
comes only from him through Christ our King and it is only through Him that we find peace and strength to grow in holiness.
I offer thanks for all of you in the Western USA Lieutenancy and all of your efforts in supporting the mission of the Order. I am also
profoundly grateful to all the members of the council who, in their generosity, have agreed to stay on to represent you and advise me.
Thanks to Lady Susan and Sir Dennis DePietro, their co-chairs Lady Patti Gray and Lady Margie Romano and their hard working
team who energetically planned and beautifully executed this year‘s Annual Meeting. The liturgies at the Cathedral of Our Lady of
Angels were splendid. How blessed we were to host our Grand Master His Eminence Cardinal John Patrick Foley and our Grand
Prior His Eminence Cardinal Roger Mahony. Their presence with 20 concelebrating bishops from the Western Lieutenancy, scores of
priests and the angelic music of the Cathedral Choir was regal and uniquely special. These clergy and 700 of you witnessed the
installation of your sixth Lieutenant in a ceremony never before included in a Lieutenancy‘s Mass. It was very special for me to have
Cardinal Foley in his loving presence confer on me the oath of the office of Lieutenant.
Other dignitary witnesses to this were the Governor General of the Order, Count Agostino Borremeo, Knight of the Collar; Chancellor
of the Order Rev. Msgr. Sir Hans Brouwers, Vice Governor General of the North American Lieutenancies, H.E. Sir Jean-Marc
Allard; and Their Excellences Lieutenants Lady Mary O‘Brien, Northwestern Lieutenancy; Sir A.J. Capritto, Southeastern
Lieutenancy; and Sir Dennis Malloy, Southwestern Lieutenancy.
Your outgoing Lieutenant, H.E. Sir Patrick Powers was honored throughout the weekend. Sir Patrick has worked tirelessly for eight
years to enhance and introduce new programs to our Lieutenancy that have more fully supported the many Christian needs in the Holy
Land. In profound appreciation, Pat received a ceremonial sword from the Lieutenancy that was used in the Sunday Mass of
Investiture. And as a surprise gesture of support and recognition, the Cardinal Grand Master announced that following the retirement
of H.E. Allard this January, Sir Patrick will become Allard‘s successor as Vice Governor General of North America. Our greatest
kudos to Sir Patrick for this appointment and recognition and our thanks to you for the of a job well done.
Here in San Diego we have begun the transition. We are setting up a new office for the Lieutenancy and have moved the files,
banking and officers to San Diego and we are beginning to sort through over 20 years of files and documents, scanning them into our
computer data base. We look forward to changes that will serve your interests in a timely, accurate and efficient manner.
I would like to encourage you, if you have not already done so, to send in your annual contribution. Even if you are not able to
support us at the $1000 per member level please give something. The welfare of the Christians in Israel, Jordan and Cypress depend
on your generosity.
On a final note, I am delighted to be able to tell you that a special opportunity is open to all of us. We have been invited by Cardinal
Mahony and Archbishop Gomez to participate in a Pallium Pilgrimage to Rome June 25 – July 2, 2011. On the feast day of Sts. Peter
and Paul, those of us in attendance will witness the conferring of the pallium by Pope Benedict XVI on Archbishop Gomez. Please
see the insert for the details of this historical event.
I have pledged to continue the great work started by my predecessors and to strive
to renew all things in Christ. There is much good work to do and I look forward
with great enthusiasm to the opportunity of serving you. May the prayers of Our
Lady of Palestine support us in our need and may all the angels and saints protect
us along our journey to holiness.
Sincerely in Christ,
H.E. Sir William H. Davidson, KGCHS

LATIN PATRIARCHATE SCHOOLS
By Sir Charles Radloff
Patience and Persistence—Rama, Israel
Nestled in the agricultural area in the rolling hills of the Meron
Mountains, the home to the largest and most productive olive
orchards in the area, is the town of Rama. Rama is the site of
the Latin Patriarchate School-Church, is located in the Upper
Galilee area of Israel, near the Lebanese border. Rama is a rural Arab community of 7000 inhabitants, with Christians being
the majority.
St. Anthony Catholic
Church and the school
pressed the Latin Patriarchate to expand the school
from the Kindergarten
through sixth grade, to add
both a Middle School and
Secondary education,
(Kindergarten through
High School).
In June of 2004, General
Administrator of the Latin Patriarchate, Father William
Shomali (now Bishop Shomali) requested that Ede and I visit
Rama and develop, with the Pastor of St. Anthony‘s Church
and Director of Rama School Father Ilario Antoniazzi, a
business plan to secure financial support for the school expansion. When the expansion project was being conceived in 2004,
there were 354 students in grades Kindergarten through Sixth
Grade. The object of this expansion was to add middle school
and expand to Kindergarten through High School. Now six
years later, with patience and perseverance by the Latin Patriarchate and Pastor Antoniazzi, the expansion is underway and the
vision of an educational complex for this rural village is
nearing reality. The expansion will provide additional
classrooms and eliminate overcrowding conditions in the
classrooms.
The expansion of Rama School will provide primary and
secondary schools services to Rama and the surrounding villages that look to the school, the Church and the Pastor for
education, community guidance and unity.
It should be encouraging to our members when they can
observe the good works and efforts of the Latin Patriarchate of
Jerusalem to promote education.

need to keep the mission of the Order alive and
this can only happen by bringing in new members.

of St. Francis of Dubuque, Iowa. In the Golden Jubilee Homily given on June 26, 2010, Sr. Pat Farrell,
OSF, said, ―We thank God that Anne Marie was
given gifts to make parish life vibrant and organized
and financially stable.‖ Sister Anne Marie, LHS
serves as business manager for Resurrection Parish
in Tempe. From The Catholic Sun – ―A monsoon
ripped through the existing church in July 2007,
forcing the parish to celebrate Mass inside its multipurpose hall for nearly two years while they raised
funds and constructed a new building.‖ Thank you
Sister Anne for the dedication you have shown to
your parish and the Diocese of Phoenix.
Lady Nancy Knight was recently honored at the
third annual ―Night of Hope.‖ This is an event that
promotes and raises funds for Catholic schools. The
primary purpose of Night of Hope is to make Catholic education more affordable. Lady Nancy received
the ―Guardian of Hope‖ award as a benefactor.
From the Catholic Sun – she helped organize a task
force to build a new high school in the northern part
of the Valley. Her original dream — St. Jude‘s Regional High School — was never built, but it laid the
groundwork for Notre Dame Preparatory to open in
Scottsdale in 2002. She held additional leadership
roles at Notre Dame and served on several diocesan
committees including finance and stewardship.

SIR JOHN H. MCGUCKIN MENTORING INTERNS
Building upon the initiative of Mr. Cor Jan van Heeswijk and Mr. Ben Dicker of the Netherlands Lieutenancy
of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre, with the endorsement of H. E. Cardinal John Foley, Grand
Master of the Equestrian Order, and the dedication of H.E. Lady Mary O‘Brien, Sir Chuck and Lady Ede
Radloff, and Sir Albert and Lady Lily Hazbun, four Bethlehem University students travelled about 7,000 miles
to work and learn far from their homes and families in hope of gaining new experiences. When asked, but
mostly without needing to be asked, the students praised their host families and the businesses that took them
in as interns.
Four students took part in this year's Sir John H. McGuckin
Mentoring Internship:
Amal Al-Bandak
Amal interned at Rancho Bernardo Inn in San Diego, California.
Her host family was Sir Charles and Lady Ede Radloff of the
Western Lieutenancy Knights of the Holy Sepulchre. Amal is
majoring in Hotel Management and minoring in French.
Nadine Jildeh
Nadine interned The Mansour Company at Town Center of El
Dorado Hills, California. Her host family was Sir Albert and Lady Lily Hazboun of the Northwestern Lieutenancy. Nadine is majoring in Accounting and minoring in Business Administration.
Mike Abu Mohor
Mike Abu Mohor interned at MJ Hall & Company and Golden bear Insurance. His host family was Sir
Michael and Lady Karen Hall of the Northwestern Lieutenancy. Mike is majoring in Accounting and minoring
in Business Administration.
Saleh Handal
Saleh Handal interned at GTO Packing, Incorporated. His host was Sir Jose G. Lopez of the Northwestern
Lieutenancy. Saleh is majoring in Accounting and minoring in Business Administration.
THE SIR JOHN H. MCGUCKIN MENTORING INTERNSHIP
H.E. John Cardinal Foley, Grand Master of the Equestrian Order, and many Lieutenancies of the Equestrian
Order, especially the Northwestern Lieutenancy and the Western Lieutenancy of the Knights of the Holy
Sepulchre, are great supporters of peace and justice in Palestine in general and Bethlehem University in particular.
The University envisions any internship as an opportunity for students to integrate and use their knowledge
and skills from the classroom, gain real-life work experience, and develop professional skills that are much
needed to enter professional life after education. Without the tremendous support and personal involvement of
people like Cardinal Foley, Lady Mary O‘Brien, Sir Chuck and Lady Ede Radloff, Sir Albert and Lady Lily
Hazboun, Sir Michael and Lady Karen Hall, Mr. Cor Jan van Heeswijk, Mr. Ben Dicker, and Mr. Bill Doty,
who share our vision and contribute funding, time, and personal and professional involvement, we simply
could not implement these life-changing international internship and career mentoring programs. Bethlehem
University expresses its gratitude for the growing support from the members of the Equestrian Order for assisting students with career-focused internship opportunities as well as with welcoming our students in their
homes. You are touching hearts and shaping a brighter future for the people of the Holy Land in a most significant and sustainable way! May God bless you abundantly!

COURAGEOUS CHARITY
Stewardship, Oath, Family and the Holy Land
In the Preamble of the Constitution of the Order, Pope Paul VI writes… the knighthood is defined as
self-discipline, generosity and courage. Whosoever does not have the firm willingness to develop and
deepen these traits in his life will never be able to become a true knight. The zeal for self-renunciation,
in the midst of this society of abundance, generous aid to the weak and for those without protection,
and a courageous struggle for justice and peace are the characteristics of the Order of the Holy
Sepulchre.
At the recent Annual Meeting in Los Angeles we spoke of how even though we each have unique
backgrounds, qualities and skills given to us by God, we have received a common gift – the Good
News of salvation through Our Lord Jesus Christ. We are challenged to become disciples, emulating
Jesus Christ in our lives. Ultimately we see with HIS eyes, love with HIS heart and care with HIS
hands, and further, share the Good News with others through what we say and what we do. What we
do—stewardship— is being asked to take the gifts of Time, Talent and Treasure given to us by God,
and share them courageously, giving them back to the Lord.
“One statement the Holy Father made during his visit to Cyprus was that
the symbol of the cross should not merely be worn as a sign of honor but
as a sign of faith and of personal willingness to sacrifice and to suffer”
– Cardinal Grand Master, 10/2010
As members of the Order, we have unique obligations to further our
discipleship and to reach out and help Christians in the Holy Land, our
extended family in Christ. As part of this Order, we have obligations and
opportunities to help our family. This article presents different ways we
can help through our generosity and courageous charity:
Annual Contributions – Each member of the Order is expected to make an annual contribution.
Currently the level of that contribution is suggested to be $1,000 per member. Your actual level of giving is at your discretion but we ask that you pray on what is possible and how it reflects your overall
goals of stewardship. Your knowledge of the acute needs in the Holy Land, now more than ever, the
information provided in the newsletter and at our meetings are to help you better reflect on what is
needed.
How is the money we receive from Annual Contributions used? After modest funding to operate the
Lieutenancy, 100% of the funds go to the Holy Land. 90% go to the Grand Magisterium, our governing
body in Rome, which supports the Latin Patriarch (Archdiocese of Jerusalem) in efforts for the Holy
Land. The role of the Order is critical to these efforts since we provide over 70% of the funding for the
Latin Patriarchate! The other 10% also goes to the Holy Land but the Lieutenancy is given discretion
on which projects to support. This has often included the Zarqa Schools, hospitals, and seminaries, for
example.

COURAGEOUS CHARITY– CONTINUED
Annual Contribution for Life – This new program represents the most powerful form of annual
contribution! Giving a one-time lump sum gift of $25,000 covers your annual contributions for the rest
of your life. More importantly it provides a stable and dependable funding source for the Holy Land
and predictability for the Lieutenancy. For you it provides freedom from worrying about annual
contributions each year and increases in annual contributions in future years. By making an Annual
Contribution for Life, members are eligible for the Silver Level of the Legacy Society. How will this
money be used? The lump sum is place in a conservative bond fund from which the proceeds are used
each year for your annual contribution. Upon your passing, the remaining funds will also be forward as
an annual contribution under the same process as regular annual contributions.
Legacy Society – The Legacy Society was developed
to help people who wanted to give beyond their annual
contribution. The program offers additional flexibility in
methods of giving, discretion in how the funds will be
used, additional communication on progress in the Holy
Land and appreciation for your stewardship efforts. To
date there are over 160 members in the Legacy Society
and current gifts alone have added Holy Land funding
equal to an entire year of annual contributions, this does
not include pledged funds in member estates. If you
have made such estate plans please let us know so we
can invite you into the Legacy Society. When giving
through the Legacy Society, you may direct where the
funds will be used as long as it is consistent with the
Grand Magisterium‘s goals. You can also specify if you
would like the funds retained and only the proceeds used. Funding can be through current gifts, gifts
over time or as part of your estate. It can be in the form of cash, stocks, bonds or other assets. We have
members of the Legacy Team who can help you explore potential options to realize your giving goals
and resource options. Currently Legacy Society levels include Bronze (for gifts greater that $2,500 per
couple), Silver (gifts greater than $25,000 per couple) and Gold (gifts greater than $250,000). In
addition to members who have specifically given to Legacy, we have currently included those who
have given annual contribution in excess of $1,000 and to special needs requests. Although we have
not made that clear we will be communicating with these members in the near future to ensure we
reflect their wishes. How is the money used? In general, it goes to projects in the Holy Land as determined by the Grand Magisterium or the Western Lieutenancy. As mentioned above, you may specify
specific projects. Such efforts have helped in several school labs, scholarships for seminarians, and
improvements in hospitals in the Holy Land.
Please consider your extended family in the Holy Land and pray for insight on how you wish to
execute your stewardship. Deus lo vult! God Wills It!

An Ethiopian Excursion
By Lady Rosa Cumare
On August 14, 2010, 24 Knights and Ladies were guests of St. Mary‘s Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo
Church in Los Angeles, thus completing our visits to the five Orthodox Churches that share
jurisdiction over the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The Ethiopian Orthodox occupy the
roof of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where they maintain a small monastery.
The Ethiopians have a long history connecting them to the Holy Land,
beginning with the visit of Makeda, Queen of Sheba, to King Solomon.
According to a 14th century Ethiopian text, the Kebra Negast, Queen
Makeda bore Solomon a son, King Minelik I. As a consequence of
Queen Makeda‘s liaison with Solomon, Ethiopia is considered the first
African nation to adopt the monotheistic worship of the God of Old
Testament and around 1000 B.C., Judaic elements were introduced
into religious practices. To this day, Ethiopians claim that King
Minelik, accompanied by the son of Zadok the High Priest, returned to
Ethiopia from a visit to his father Solomon, and brought with him the
Ark of the Covenant. The Orthodox Church believes that the Ark is
still housed in St. Mary of Zion Church in Axum.
The Judaism of the Ethiopians proved to be the door through which
Christianity could enter. Acts 8: 26-39 tells of Philip the Apostle‘s
conversation with an eunuch who was the Queen of Ethiopia‘s treasurer, and who ―had come to Jerusalem to worship.‖ The eunuch was

Sepulchre in Jerusalem
reading the Scripture passage about a prophet being led like a lamb to
slaughter and, after Philip explained that the prophet was Christ, the
eunuch was converted and baptized immediately. Ever since Christianity has existed among the
Ethiopians, although the faithful have endured great hardships at the hands of pagans, Muslims and
even fellow Christians.
As in all our other excursions, we
were introduced to the Ethiopian
community by Rt. Rev. Fr. Sir Alexei
Smith, who had contacted the clergy
at St. Mary‘s on our behalf. Deacon
Adam gave a brief history of the
mainly immigrant Ethiopian community in Los Angeles, which is currently served by two parish churches.
He explained that for most firstgeneration immigrants, the church is
a center of cohesion and contact with
both the parishioners‘ native land and
their adopted country.

An Ethiopian Excursion
We were joined by the almost one-hundred year old former pastor of St. Mary‘s who, together with
Deacon Adam, chanted the Lord‘s Prayer for us in Ge‘ez, the Tewahedo Church‘s liturgical language.
Deacon Adam also demonstrated the drums which form part of the
Church‘s rituals. It was quite a thrill to hear the throbbing appeal to
God which resonated throughout the building. One cannot help but
think that the Lord will surely listen to that rhythmic beat.
Ritual drums
Like other Orthodox Churches, the
Ethiopians split with the Roman
Church after the Council of Chalcedon. They dispute the characEthiopian clergy chanting the
terization of their belief of Christ‘s
Lord’s Prayer
nature as ―monophysite‖ – i.e. that
He is only of ―one nature.‖ St.
Mary‘s website provides the following explanation: ―The Ethiopian Church holds that there were two natures before incarnation, but only one after the union. The human nature was not dissolved in the Divine as Eutyches taught. But rather, the Divine made the human
nature immediately its own. The word and the human constitute one nature, and union is established
without confusion and without division.‖
Such explanations suggest that the real distinction between the Orthodox and Roman Church lies in the
dispute over the primacy of the Pope. We should all fervently pray that this dispute can be resolved
and we can once again be one in the love of Christ.
Besides providing food for thought and nourishment for the soul, our excursions have also featured
shared fellowship over a meal in the tradition of the Church the knights and ladies visit. So, after St.
Mary‘s, we traveled to Little Ethiopia and had a splendid feast at Massob restaurant, where we ate a
variety of dishes with our hands, using delicious pancake-like soft bread as a spoon, and drinking specially roasted and brewed Ethiopian coffee. It was a delightful end to a most enlightening afternoon.
Sharing an Ethiopian feast
Two excursions remain to round out our tour of those
who have control over the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Generations of a Muslim family have held the
keys to the door. Throughout history, the Church has
stood on ground occupied by Jews, sometimes peaceably and sometimes not. We hope to visit both the
Muslim and the Jewish communities in the near future.
Do come join us. All are welcome!

JUSTICE AND PEACE
By Lady Rosa Cumare
The Justice & Peace Committee wants to convey a huge ―thank you‖ to the knights and ladies who
attended the Annual Meeting in Los Angeles for giving a big boost to the Western Lieutenancy‘s
newest initiative to help the Christians in the Holy Land: the Peace Lamp Project. We sold all 200
lamps that Sir Allen Lund graciously trucked to an L.A. warehouse from the North Carolina distributor and that Sir Dennis DePietro brought the last 5
miles to the hotel. We hope to launch the second, on
-line sales phase of the project soon.
Sir Don Keegan, Rt. Rev. Sir Alexei Smith,
Sir Jim Carcich selling peace lamps
All who bought the lamps received pamphlets that
described the nature of the project with a letter of
endorsement by the Most Rev. Sir Alexander Salazar, auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles. Our new
Lieutenant H.E. Sir Bill Davidson did a great job of
advertising the lamps at the Sunday members‘
meeting. But unfortunately we were not able to give
members a truly detailed description of the genesis
and purpose of the project.
It all started when the Super Pilgrimage ―green bus‖
attended Sunday Mass at Holy Redeemer Church in
Taybeh, the last entirely Christian village in the
Occupied Territories.
The village of Taybeh
After an uplifting liturgy featuring the Taybeh
youth choir, the pastor Fr. Raed Abusasliah told us
about the plight of the villagers. What had once
been a thriving community in the midst of fruitful
olive groves was shrinking, owing to the violence
and restrictions arising from the Israeli Occupation
and the second Palestinian intifada. When the intifada started, vats of olive oil produced by the
villagers could no longer be sold, because Taybeh had been cut off from its markets.
Youth Choir at Mass in Taybeh
Fr. Raed concluded that neither violent nor non-violent protest was productive; the only way to
achieve peace was through prayer. He had what he calls ―a simple and symbolic idea‖ to make traditional oil-burning lamps and have them placed in churches all over the world, where they would inspire the faithful to pray for peace. ―Thus,‖ says Fr. Raed, ―the lamp, together with the oil and the
light, becomes a message of peace from our side and a sign of solidarity towards the Holy Land from

the churches all around the world.‖ Production of the lamps provides jobs for over 20
villagers and also helps market Taybeh‘s
store of olive oil.
Needless to say, the ―green bus‖ pilgrims
were completely sold on the idea, which enjoys the support of the Latin Patriarch and
Cardinal Ennio Antonelli of Florence.
Curiously, two Methodist missionaries, Lissa
and Raymond Caldwell, had met Fr. Raed
some years before and had become the
United States‘ distributor for the peace lamps
through their Holy Land Artisans website.
The Caldwells with Fr. Raed Abusasliah
The Caldwells‘ work as distributors is supported by
the Methodist Church, so that 100% of the proceeds
are transmitted to the Christian artists and churches in
the Occupied Territories, Palestine and Israel. This
ecumenical endeavour made the peace lamp project
even more attractive to the Justice & Peace Committee.

To sum up: our goal is to place a peace lamp in as
many parishes in the Western Lieutenancy as possible. We plan to post pictures of the lamps burning in the parishes on the Lieutenancy‘s website
and perhaps feature them in the print newsletter as
well. Although the lamps are charming decorative
items, they are not primarily intended for the
home. Their power lies in shedding light on the
situation in the Holy Land and in encouraging
widespread prayers for peace. They are intended
to be vessels of hope.
